It's almost impossible to have your entire offensive system installed in your first year. That said, excellent recruiting will make the offense better almost certainly, but it probably won't have as much to do with an expanded playbook as time will.
I doubt that, OSU which is a much larger overall university has a huge medical school, vet school and law school has less than that.
I'm for it. My thought: if you commit, you sign. No more of this soft verbal crap.
However, there need to be rule changes on the other side as well. No more uncommittable offers, oversigning classes, UNC, if a coach leaves/gets fired you are released from your commitment, etc.
We really need a monthly column from you JUGS. NCAA rules changes, recruiting changes, questions from the audience, in Dec tips for going down to Orlando. Also we need bio on yo, did you play sports at Tech? What got you into this?
Offers should be binding for the school once a kid commits. Kids should not be bound to the team until they get to campus. That's just my "the kids are the important ones here, and football is secondary" opinion.

It's easy to protect everyone, too. LOI can be voided by the recruit if the coach changes, an NCAA investigation is initiated, or the school drops their intended major. LOI can be voided by the school if the recruit gets in trouble with the law or fails to qualify. Done and done.
This is the important part. You have to allow players to be able to void the LOI for legitimate reasons if you're going to open it up for an early signing period. In fact, they should allow kids to void their LOIs right now as it is, but that's a whole other ballgame.
If they don't, then this is far too significantly weighted towards and will be outright abused by the schools.

Start the process a little earlier, and you'll get coaches only making more serious offers, rather than the current "shotgun" approach that gets kids left out when they think the big boys want them but really don't.
There. That's the thing. If you do the early signing period right you can make this super important point work. If you do it wrong, it's a bad deal for the players.
French, I have heard it said Fuente has only used a fraction of his playbook so far? If that is true it makes me wonder what the offense will look like when he gets more of the kind of recruits he needs to run his complete offense attack. Not knocking the kids on the team at all, as the offense is day and night above what I have seen the last few years. What are your thoughts? Always really look foward to your pre and post game post. Don't always understand your terminology and insight being a novice about the technical side of football, but I understand enough to really enjoy it.

Born in Gary Indiana, raised in SWVA. Wen't to Rye Cove High School and graduated in 98'. My father owned a small paving company which I worked from ages 12-18. So I was set on a life in construction from an early age. I went to Mountain Empire Community College for 1 semester but my heart just wasn't in it. So, I joined the workforce and went thru an apprenticeship in Kingsport TN. The last 20 years I've lived everywhere from DC to San Francisco (where I am as I write this). Trust me, my accent is a daily topic if I do anything in public. I own a house in Church Hill TN so SWVA/NETN is still my home, I became a VT fan in 99' after I joined my apprenticeship I was hanging out with an Arkansas Razorback fan while he watched football and they was showing highlights of a school from SWVA that was kickin' ass with a fella named MV7 and it tripped me out cause I had never paid attention to college sports before. I guess VT football is a way for me to keep myself grounded after all these years of being on the road. I was using a restroom on the NV/CA border and a guy yells GO HOKIES! in my face because of my hat. It startled me and It's happened to me several times at various locations. Please don't yell things at me while I got my junk in my hand. But It's the hometown team and that means something. Don't get me wrong, I live in TN because I don't like SIT (Not to be a political discussion). But my heart was raised in the dirt of SWVA. My wife is a student at Alabama and I'm going to a football game with her either this season or next. I plan on wearing maroon and orange and VT plastered all over my attire. I'm just up from Stanford also. I would like to see a stanford game while I'm in Frisco, I'll be wearing VT gear to that as well.
Pretty sure we are already at 8-10k grad students. Doubling that is a huge increase but not out of the realm of possibility.
Also I have not heard a goal date for hitting that size, so a steady growth plan over a decade would reach it.

- I really appreciate you breaking things down but also helping us understand that these aren't just a bunch of random plays being called but a 60 min long strategy. I definitely did NOT noticed during that game that the plays you just reviewed were created after selling the option. Love that I can hopefully identify this now.
- I also like the fact that we have an offensive identity for the first time in a couple of years. And an O-coordinator who can flex to what the defense is playing off of.
Very basic question: When can a TE not release his block and go out for a pass? Is it just as long as there are 5 O-linemen plus the TE he can always go beyond that 5 yd mark and be eligible?

Question - at a higher level, how good / bad are these BC and ECU teams that we just crushed. VT's game plan and execution seem to be great but are they against significantly inferior teams, both with new coaching staffs, in the beginning of the season. I guess I'm wondering if you feel VT really is this talented individually and capable of continuous improvement in Fu's system against a tougher schedule OR did we out-class 2 really bad teams at home in September. Ground me for unc, pitt, miami.
Like I said, I think Wisconsin fans have a lot to be happy about at this point in the season.
I always have a problem with rating Wisconsin running backs highly. They've had a lot of them that have gotten big press and huge stats over the years, even Heisman love, and the quarterbacks have, by and large, been good enough to win games, no disagreement there.
But the reason I have a hard time praising the skill of Wisconsin QBs and RBs is because their offensive lines are generally some of the best units in the nation. I'm not sold on Hornibrook or Clement because I give most of the credit for Wisconsin's success to their line play. Anytime anyone praises their OL, I'm all for it. They're usually great.
Their defense has good numbers, but, again, I question how much faith I can put into their quality due to their competition. LSU is genuinely one of the most incompetent offenses I've seen (and you know I've been watching O'Cainspring and Lefty for the last billion years). Akron and GaSt aren't exactly offensive powerhouses. MichSt is breaking in a new QB and they lost their top two receivers off of a team that scored zero points against Alabama last year.
As far as James Franklin, no one is sure yet what he'll be able to do with a full roster instead of a roster half packed with walk-ons, the PSU faithful is still in wait-and-see mode.
Finally, I wouldn't call this hating on Wisconsin, but a dose of healthy skepticism. If they go 2-2 against OSU, Mich, Neb, and Iowa, then I'd say they're decent. If they go 1-3, then I'd say they're overrated in the top ten. If they manage to beat Mich or OSU, then they've proven their worth to me as long as they don't drop any stupid games. I'm just not willing to jump on their bandwagon due to the historical performance of their team against quality competition.

It actually makes a lot of sense if the goal is to just increase our footprint with beefed up satellite campuses throughout the commonwealth. Right now we have 10 campuses around Virginia, and the other in Switzerland, so if we spread out the growth throughout those campuses, the hit to our main campus won't be so bad.
