I haven't seen "Through the Wormhole," but I've watched similar stuff before. If you want a real mind trip, look up Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe." I watched it during undergrad and it both confused and intrigued me. (EDIT: "The Elegant Universe" was the title of his book, which was adapted by PBS for a NOVA three-part series. Just so no one thinks I've gone nuts and "watch" books). The unification of all physical forces under mathematical constructs that rely on things our brains can't even perceive is a real trip. It largely works, but for reasons that are unclear. I often wonder if the human mind can ever comprehend the actual nature of reality.

Another good resource for cool physics and quantum topics is PBS Spacetime. They post to YouTube once or twice a week. Everything from astrophysics to elementary particles.

For those of you with Dish Network in the mid-Atlantic area (I'm in PA), the Boston affiliate (WSBK) is included in most channel packages and shows ACC games on a regular basis. That's hopefully how I'll be seeing the game.

Ever watch "Through the Wormhole", especially when they get into the combined theory about everything ? Trying to explain how both the macro and the micro worlds work together by one single theory or equation seems intriguing.

I'm trained in notes (and tablature for guitar), but I have a pretty good ear and could probably fake my way through working off intervals.

Accumulation of several metals in the brain does occur in Alzheimer's (notably copper and iron, but aluminum does factor in). But the notion of enough aluminum leaching from cans and somehow finding its way across the blood-brain barrier in sufficient quantity to seed a full-blown disease state is absurd to me. No reputable study has found any causal link here.

Not to mention we knew about the disease and some of its molecular details a few decades before aluminum cans were even a thing.

Back when I first remember Alzheimer's ('90s I think), it was linked to aluminum can usage. Is that still a theory, and is/was there any weight to the science?

In short, Alzheimer's disease. There is a protein in the brain that sticks together and seems to be associated with the progression of the disease, but no one knows how or why. Our understanding has evolved in recent years to the point where we may have been barking up the wrong tree for a while, but everything I learned is still relevant, even if it's not central, to disease progression.

I do molecular simulations, so I am the kind of biochemist who doesn't actually use pipettes and stuff. All my work is on a computer. We use basic principles of physics to simulate how molecules move and interact. The details get really complex in a hurry, but suffice it to say that this is a really efficient way to study behavior that you can't see with any experimental method.

Paris was pretty awesome. I was there as an invited speaker at a conference (my first such invitation) and got to spend close to a week there. The conference kept us all pretty busy, but I did get a chance to visit some historical sites and the Eiffel Tower. Real French patisseries are amazing, as well.

Hopefully, largely the same. That would mean there's enough support from the TKP Club to keep things going on their current trajectory with all the reporting, insight, and film study that we know and love. As long as we can keep that together, the community should remain engaged, insightful, and fun. I don't think there's a lot that needs to change, we just need to continue on the same trajectory.

And if not, then Joe will turn this place into a psychedelic Myspace page for anyone who isn't ponying up the cash.
