No doubt. My buddies and I talk about it all the time. The Jerry Rice argument...

But if we're talking measurables - which is all the combine accomplishes - it's more "drive for dough, putt for dough" as a lot of these guys can improve their stock greatly with a great weekend in Indy. Not a promise of a HOF career, but could help you get drafted higher - or at all.

Makes me a little worried for Luther.

The fact that he hasn't visited yet still gives me hope, if the staff can convince him to visit then we will have a shot.

Yep. Unless he enrolls early, we will be talking about this kid until next February.

Or until we find another DE to care about more. #thecrootneverstops

As per a 2008 study, the NFL combine results show no statistically significant prediction on NFL success.
The 40 time did show a correlation only for running backs.
A 2003 study showed some correlation for draft status.
So....'drive for show, putt for dough' or something like that.

Here's a link.

You use your pecs, shoulders and triceps if you ever block or get blocked. Lower body vital too, but I'd place a fair bit of importance on bench muscles, esp linemen/TEs.

Re strength v athleticism, I'd offer split em up. Bench/squats def a measure of strength. Vert, shuttle, 40 to me are more measurements of athletic ability. Obviously not black & white - and focus differs by position. I don't think I'd care as much if a speedy WR I was scouting only did 10 bench reps, just like I would be fine with an OL who runs a lousy 40 but has a good shuttle time, and/or can do 30 reps.

Dadi a perfect example of an athlete who happens to play DE (he'll be a DE/LB I guess). Not a strong guy, but athletic as hell. Every once in a while he'll catch a guy on skates, overcompensating for his speed, but he's not a brute force player. Ran a 4.74, incidentally. Very fast in the DL group, but again, I question how often he'll put his hand down. French?

*Check calendar*...yup we still have 11 months before NSD, doesn't matter.

41" Vert, wearing number 41, this has to mean that he will be the 41st overall pick in the draft, right?

Agreed but it is rarely ever indicative of anything long-term. I know every dude who has ever lifted anything in their life wished they had a better bench press, but when do you really ever use the muscles being worked in bench press exercises? Squats, 40 yd dashes, and vertical jumps are such better measures of a player's overall athletic ability/strength IMO.

So Luther did no workouts today. Not sure why.

I mean it does demonstrate strength.

Is there anything more irrelevant in sports than how many reps on bench a player can do? Totally just a pride/testosterone thing

I'd say that will help him at least make the fg block team somewhere.
