I get it, Berman complains about the way VT treats him and it comes across as a bit petty. Does that mean the entire website should go up in arms against him? I remember how many compliments we got as a community from Ohio state fans in the months leading up to and after the game this year. Have we really regressed to the point where we feel the need to rip apart a guys character just because we don't like him? For Christ sakes I know it's the offseason and there's not much to talk about but there's got to be something better than this. This whole thread reminds me of the fans who tweet to herbstreet accusing him of "ALWAYS SAYING BAD THINGS ABOUT MY SCHOOL." It seems a bit silly to me is all I'm saying.
The quick feet on Settle. The low center of gravity on Settle. The size of Settle.
Timmy likey. Timmy want wingy.
I was at the Saturday game with my wife and kids. Hokies lost 5-4 and almost came back. The game ended with 3 Hokies stranded on base but it was still a great time. There were more Hokies there than Citadel fans, which was awesome. Also, our team wore some awesome St Louis Cardinals-inspired uniforms.
OK, agreed. But I think the jokes about his physical appearance are over the top.
Right. "Recruiting services" becomes "recruiting sites" moving forward. Didn't mean to imply that any of these sites provide any service aside from info/speculation
Yeah I'm happy he's transferring to A&M and (hopefully) continues his commitment to the corps...I'd venture that Moorehead had something to do with this.
There is nothing Berman does that just "goes against narrative"; from complaining about losing his parking spot next to Cassell, to complaining about losing his court side seat to calling out VT softball for not leading their press release with the notice they got shut out. What exactly does he think VT is here for, his personal ease of life?
Or are the services just letting the coaches do the heavy lifting and reacting to their offers? I've always thought of the services as pro-active developers of information, a tool that fans (and some coaches, probably) can use to track their teams' targets and stay informed.
splitting hairs perhaps but they aren't recruiting "services", i.e., they don't go out and look for talent and then market what they find; rather they are recruiting publications that help generate and profit on fan interest in recruiting.
except for camps sponsored by the pubs, the coaches do almost all of the heavy lifting.
competition in that industry is improving the product...but there is little to no pressure on the pubs to get the evaluation correct. conversely, a recruiting service has to be very good at evaluations or no one will buy their product
I have no problem with jokes if they aren't petty/unoriginal/unfunny. I just don't get the automatic hate that goes towards any writer who says something that goes against TKP narrative. Everyone has their opinions, sportswriters included. If you don't like it, don't follow them.
I think Dadi plays better in space - and would be used more in space - than you do. And Motu wasn't the only problem, but he wasn't not the problem.
Other than that, I'm with this assessment. He looks like a basketball player out there. I would love to see him with +20 pounds on him bc I think he'd be more valuable in the League - could he put it on? Anyone know what he weighed when he arrived in Blacksburg?

Best of luck and I hope he continues in their corps.
Good for him. Wish him nothing but the best!
Best wishes, Kalvin. Hope your time in Texas is successful and that the offense is just your...style. I HAD TO DO ONE MORE PUN.
I had to give you a leg for swimming against the tide. I will have to agree with you absolutely that the "physical stature" jokes and general denigration are, well, to me at least, petty and unseemly. Blood in the water is hard to resist, and I may have had a joke at his expense in the past, but I know it isn't right. Personally, I promise that from this moment forward, Berman will not suffer insult from my comments, unless I take particular issue with a particular issue with his writing. Maybe not worth much, but it's all I can do. Hope you avoid the wrath of the others here. I think most are just in the circlejerk for the off season relief, but, well, g'luck.
you got this dead on! great call. hokie fireman linked the story below for those interested.
Dear Santa:
Jamyest, Hunter and Laborn
I'm gonna need a lot more than that if I try haha
My God what a sad little circlejerk this place has become. Rational thoughts and civilized discourse about Virginia Tech athletics? Nahhhh I have a better idea, lets make fun of the physical stature of a beat writer because we don't like the mean things he wrote about our school. You all sound like a bunch of 13 year olds.
Like alot of these exercises, it is a red / yellow flag generator. Rest assured a 14 raises plenty of flags and his tape validates them. Fortunately for DN, I think he had the longest arms of any DL. If you can outreach, outquick a guy you can passrush. But your hand placement and overall orchestration of functional strength has to be really good. To your point if you watch Miller during the SuperBowl, he didn't touch his opposing OT a couple of times... just ran around him. But DN is not VM yet... a chipping back who releases and Dadi is in gonna be challenged.
Some argue military press is better than BP, but in terms of functional strength, a properly done BP is synergistic with deadlifts and works the back and shoulders plenty. Throw in squats and they are the big 3 for pretty good reason. Not sure why anyone talking about football would ever dispute this. Sure you do other exercises and sometimes rotate through the big 3... but they are functional strength. I think all 4 of our combine participants had remarks about a lack of functional strength. Sometimes I see the disdain around here for Dabo and the way his guys were prepared for the combine, and I think we are all drinking maroon cool-aid. Do you need functional strength if all you want to do is be a pass rush specialist? I think we have a season of game tape saying you don't need a pass rush specialist playing every down. All this talk about terrible MLBs etc etc, is just talk. Talk that happens when fans fail to realize a guy they love is severely deficient in certain aspects of his game. They blame others.
Guys with long arms can struggle with BP. But when you watch tape on DN, any time a big guy gets in on him he struggles to generate separation power. You can tell yourself 14 doesn't matter for the bench... but the scouts watching film are going to wonder whether against NFL OTs DN is gonna be able to get optimal hand placement or if he will be able to grow into being a better orchestrated force generator.
I think they will bet early on him. I think he is a very raw talent who will be able to find a place in a 3-4 and/or grow into a full time 4-3 end. Fortunately for him he should be able to rush the passer early. But I think it will take a few years to play full time - he has to either gain 20-25 lbs or learn to play in space which he doesn't do very well right now.Given the lack of progress while at VT... this is a pretty incongruous statement. I just really think our football program got off track the last few years and DN is a special talent.
Lastly I still think he has hand issues. Its not something I've heard but watching tape during the Sr bowl he seemed to be pretty powerful on initial contact but if he got hauled back in he had no chance. I am guessing the hands are still a problem for him. May not have impacted him for the BP, but certainly this year and the sr bowl I think it did.
Sorry I know my posts are dour... I just only really post when I disagree.
Your move, Mr. Garbutt.
If so, I can recommend a good Chiropractor.
Classic post. Thanks for the chuckle.
Y'all just trippin', man.
Edit: Sorry, being a product of the 60-70s, bending bars had a different meaning.

Not too difficult when the top is so close to the ground.
