I don't put that one on Whit. The agreement was decided and already written under Weaver, it just needed a signature. Whit gets the job and that's literally the first thing on his desk. Despite the fan disappointment, what else was he going to do? If he says, "nope, sorry, I don't want this" he's just undermined what Weaver did (a bad look to some, a good look to others) and then has to immediately set about scheduling non-conference spots that may already be locked up by "better" teams. He chose to hold steady on the current course. I will decided how Whit should be judged regarding ECU when he gets a chance to make his own decision on the matter. His hands were already largely tied here.
He has no interest in discourse. He's said the same thing about five different places in this thread, despite the fact that other posters, myself included, have critiqued his argument. He won't respond when someone gives a rebuttal to his argument, but he'll post that exact same argument elsewhere in this thread. He's actively avoiding discourse. His contribution to this conversation has been way more noise than signal.

David Wilson and Ryan Williams left and made some big money, and also found injuries in the bargain and are no longer playing (could be wrong on Williams). Darren Evans felt compelled by his situation, it appears, and took a chance when he wasn't that highly regarded. He hooked on to some practice squads for five grand a week for a couple of seasons and that was that. Deangelo Hall - who in hindsight says he regrets it, but has had a fairly steady career. Who else? Bucky has potential. Is he ready to unleash it? He'll have to search deep and hopefully is getting real advice from people who don't view him as their own cash machine.
Me, I'd stay - if only to see what I could do in a system such as Fuente's. I like those odds better.
Because stars are looking at several things among which are your ability to contribute right way and your future collegiate & professional prospects. And the grading curve for older prep school kids is the same as for a kid coming out of HS. They don't adjust for the extra year or two of physical and mental maturity.
So naturally the same talented kid coming out of prep school or JUCO is more likely to being able to contribute right away and their future prospects are clearer than when they were in HS.
Jerod Evans is a perfect example of this. Lightly recruited out of HS and unlikely to contribute immediately, but after a couple seasons of JUCO he is now judged to be a strong candidate to make an immediate contribution.
Because...one, there was a 6'4" 305 lb DT from California named Jimmy Williams who played for VT in 2002. Two, there have been at least two players on the Tech roster since 2000 from California.

The good news is there is a lot of current and future Hokies on the list. Not way at the top, but if they can perform like some players after them, we will be ok.

VT doesn't have too many non-fans from California buying hats because they're fashionable. Then again, neither does Georgia, though I'm certain they sell more hats overall. And that's certainly a way to measure branding.
I can see Notre Dame, OSU, Michigan, and Florida State meeting your criteria, along with Oregon. Also, any team that has the playoffs in recent memory.
Yes, there are storied programs, but you know what? People's memories are short. Recruits these days don't even remember when VT played for a national championship. Their parents might.
Certainly people in Georgia remember how great Georgia is or was. But most people have to be reminded by ESPN of the "largest cocktail party" history right before the Florida-Georgia game. I guess your point is made there, though. Which game has more prominence, the Florida-Georgia game, or the Virginia-Virginia Tech game? Ooooops.
So what we really need is for Miami and Virginia Tech to start winning again. Clemson and Florida State seem to be doing their part.
There was another Jimmy Williams, I think they were both in the same class. This one either never made it to school or didnt stay long.
I think we did ok in the top 10, probably better than most schools. Fred Lee wasnt that highly ranked on Rivals. Marcus being Marcus and Kendall being injured we did miss out on some there. DJ Coles definitely wasnt our second best recruit.
It's pretty much that way for every team. Sure...stars matter over time in the aggregate, but on the individual level they aren't particularly accurate. Too many variables -- injuries, bad behavior, lack of football IQ, poor scholastic ability, lack of drive, etc. And maybe most important of all...bad talent evaluation.
Roughly 92% of 3* don't drafted; 85% of 4* don't get drafted; and 50% of 5* don't get drafted. That's a lot of misses.
"Well" is a relative term. There are 3 Georgia kids currently on the VT roster.
Facyson -- modestly ranked and recruited coming out of HS (Georgia #52/#37 per Rivals/247) with some solid power 5 offers (VT, UNC, Louisville, Ole Miss, Miss St), but mostly low power 5 and mid-major offers.
Santamaria -- Kicker (who will likely never be the #1 kicker)
Plantin -- lightly ranked and recruited (#133 in GA per 247 and only other power 5 offers from Illinois & UVa)
Kam was a 2 star QB recruit I believe.
Let's look at it this way...How much would these guys make somewhere else? Then, subtract the cost of moving, and account for cost of living likely being different....
They might be making less than last year, but it could possibly be more than they would make anywhere else next year (short of Beamer staying).
Another way to look at this is that Bud, Gray, and Wiles aren't really staying in their current jobs. This is a different coaching staff, it just happens to be located in the same place, and the head coach happened to hire four people from the old staff.
