I feel sorry for the Russian players and their families. Considering the major emphasis from Putin to win a medal for their hockey team...to be eliminated...and have the remarks Putin made after the loss to the US about the team...whew. Heavy.
I would love to move back to Blacksburg. My husband has dreams of working for the Corps or ROTC programs so he could still be active duty and live there.

I love the area and would live there easily, but unless a job pays the same or greater, there's no way I could get my SO to move there considering her long standing job with a recent promotion where we're at.

There seem to be parallels (or would they be skew lines?) between NFL teams' inability to properly evaluate risky or marginal talent and VT's ability to evaluate and sign improperly ranked recruits (Maddy, Nicholas, and Sobczak hopefully). Maybe I'm looking at it through orange and maroon colored glasses though and suffering from selection bias.
Actually, you are right there's a parallel, but incorrect about the NATURE of the parallel. Players like Maddy and Dadi are the exceptions, especially in the most recent timeframe. Take a look at our 2010 and 2011 recruiting classes and consider our success with these 'rough diamonds' as a whole, not just the ones that worked out.
Part of the issue is the glulam composite beams can probably take the weight of speakers, but they probably also want to add walkways, lighting, etc. Also the beams are angled not straight across making construction of any type of supports more complex.

Here's the thing about US vs Canada tomorrow...
The US team is built for the bigger ice of international play. The Canadian team is built for NHL sized rinks. If this game was being played in N.America, I'd have Canada winning this game, but its being played in Europe. That bigger rink is a BIG advantage to the US team that nobody is really talking about. The Canadians are a bigger, more physical team than the US squad, but the US counters that with speed... and a lot of it. We should be able to use the bigger ice to get around their defense to get plenty of scoring opportunities. They might have the better defenders, but the US plays a better defensive game. And I'll take Quick over Price every day and twice on Sunday.
We very well still could lose, because the Canadian team has Crosby, and that guy can will a team to wins... but I just have a feeling about this US squad. The entire US Hockey organization has had a Canadian rematch circled on the calendar since 2010. I liken this to the 2003 VT home game against Miami. The US team has been looking forward to this game for a looooooooooong time.

Well therein lies the problem. We have no way of effectively testing how much the roof can handle, which puts a HUGE limitation on any kind of improvement we can expect to sound and lighting in the building. We just can't add any extra weight cause we don't know if it'll cause the roof to collapse.
Long-term, this is a problem that needs to be addressed to the point where I really do think the next round we'll be looking at a replacement or complete overhaul of Cassell, including a complete reingineering of the structure to expand the concourses, add in more concessions, add in a team store, add in a walk-through of VT basketball history with exhibits, add in private suites for high dollar donors, an overhaul of the bowl to create an all purpose arena, which allows for student risers to ring the court when configured for basketball, and to put a new load-bearing roof on the structure to make the venue more attractive for concerts and other attractions (WWE, monster truck rallies, rodeos, etc... you know, to pull in the local population during times when school isn't in session) to generate more revenue. Cassell is a basketball-only venue right now that isn't used outside of VT sports. Its a massively wasted money making opportunity.
All - that wasn't a post suggesting Leal should start, just a comparison of what he looked like as a senior in high school compared to our incoming freshman at the same stage. Another thing to keep in mind when comparing film is that that Leal is from South Florida, meaning he's playing with and against elite athletes all over the field.
I said this before...but I think whoever wins the QB battle this spring will be a reflection of what direction Loefller wants to go as a coordination with the pieces he has available to him.
I'm still not exactly sure who Loeffler is: He has has a demonstrated history of traditional inside / outside zone stuff (Temple) as well as veer / read stuff (VT). My current thought, and this is not rocket science, is that he wants to run the ball and will coordinate an offense to do so. If he has the big, workhourse, 1-cut, zone back, as well as a big, athletic offensive line...we'll see more of the pro-style zone running game with Leal / Ford. If he has a QB that can run, we'll see the veer stuff with Durkin / McMillian. I'm still not sure how Motley fits just yet, but I do think he will suprise people....If he was as much of a lock to change positions like many on this board suggest I think he would have done so already like Bucky.
With that, I think the winner of the QB battle will be dictated just as or more on the ability of the running backs and the offensive line than on the QB!!
Well.... yeah, not RIGHT NOW. I'm talking 20-25 years down the line, long after the 'don't support club teams' era of Jim Weaver has fallen to the depths of our memories.
Varsity hockey for VT is an untapped resource. We already have a good history of putting up strong teams in the club level. Continue that momentum and turn it varsity. Sure, we could suck for a while, but it presents another revenue generating sport that people would pay to attend in the new arena. It would help offset the cost of building or renovating Cassell much quicker. That alone is worth exploring the idea.
I went up on that roof many years ago. There are ways to analyze it if you know the construction materials and age and condition of the structure. Because natural materials have more variability you have to be more conservative on your estimates. I think the nominal capacity is probably known. It would require money to investigate and fine tune the analysis and it might not gain you anything.

Those other games, we had National Title aspirations. We beat FSU, we make the ACC title game. Doubt we beat a team of that quality 2 times in a row. Likely get slotted to the CFA Bowl where we'd be playing an opponent way over our heads. Not sure 'what could have been' really applies to that game, as much of a missed opportunity it was.
