Got my parents to come down for that game. Neither of them went to big football colleges (UCSB & UNM) so I was extremely excited for them to witness such a great game in person. They've been to other college football games, but goodness the atmosphere in the stadium for that game was absolutely ridiculous.
There are several sports that I believe are only club sports at tech that probably should be changed or added. Hockey, Field Hockey, crew.
And in 2014 we will have Miami on a Thursday night in ALL Maroon and it will be my first game in Lane Stadium.
Honest question, if they wanted to build a new arena on the Cassell site, could they begin demo in March (not this year, just some hypothetical year in the near future), have the teams play in Roanoke for 1 season, and have a new arena ready by November the following year? is a 18-20 month schedule possible? i don't know how long an arena build would take, or how long the demo/site cleanup/prep would be. i'd hate to see the arena moved as i think Cassell is in a perfect spot. ideally the new arena would be built to tie into the bball practice facility and link everything together, but you wouldn't want to spend more than one season playing off campus, either...

OK, I might get down votes for this, but I think I need to take that risk.
My wife and I have developed a plan to move to the NRV since February last year. We have plans for our own small business in the area. We've discussed the necessary permits, etc. with the proper local government agencies and all is a go. I think I could get a high tech job in the area with my 30 years of experience in wireless communications. We are just finishing up our kids college stints and have had our house on the market for 8 months to make this happen.
The issue is selling our house - its in a very unique market. So I'm going to include the link here. If we sell this house, we will be on our way. Anyone out there want to own a vacation home or live in one of the best salt water fishing environment on the planet?

We looked at living in NorVa but quickly discovered that any increase in pay was eaten up by the high cost of living.
Then factor in the driving frustrations and that NorVa is suburban hell and decided Roanoke area is perfect.

I think we need to win a football national championship. Then we need to win several more football and other sports championships. Then we need to institue a national HOKIE HOLIDAY. This seems like a good trajectory, a solid business plan, but.....then again, I am prone to random thoughts.......
It wasn't a night game, but the 2013 Maryland is in my list of "could-of-been's" The crowd was great, it was loud, everyone stayed for the whole game, the weather was perfect...but all that was lost in the embarassment of losing to a bad, and heavily injury-depleted Maryland team. Probably the toughest loss I've had to stomach in person.
Ford has the benefit of being there now so he isnt waiting to win it 6-7 months from now. He is already working on winning it behind the scenes.
KHL goalie? Varlamov is on the Avalanche, still should have started Bob though. I think Radulov should be the most crucified. I know he was really good in the last 2 games for them, but if he doesn't commit some of the dumbest penalties I've ever seen against us they probably win that game and are the ones playing Canada tomorrow. But they just weren't a very good team, the stereotypical undisciplined style of Russian players showed up.
Oh and before the debate kicks off...
I think that the loads could be pretty accurately simulated with the dynamic modeling and simulation tools available these days. I'm sure a pretty good, and conservative, estimate could be done which you could leverage for solution designs.
Certainly you want to be able to test the premises and results of the model, and that could potentially be a bit pricey, but some out of the box thinking could solve that. I refuse to throw an idea out that hasn't been thoroughly vetted.
Also, with the technology in lighting and sound systems these days I would imagine some pretty light weight solutions exist.
I think solutions for that exists for Cassell.
I brought up hockey in that other thread. As far as I have heard, I don't believe creating a varsity hockey program is even on the radar right now, but if you ask me, it should be. The team right now competes very well at the club level. Even more impressive, they are a relatively good draw on a nightly basis, while playing their games in Roanoke. From what I understand, you will see anywhere from 2,000-5,000 fans at the Civic Center for home games. For a club sport, this is REALLY impressive. I would think that attendance would be even stronger if we were to make it a varsity sport with an on-campus facility.
Right now, our next sport is Women's Golf. After that, we're looking at a long time before we add in another sport. If I were to guess, I would think the next men's program would be lacrosse, just because of the strong ACC foothold the sport already has, and the fact we could use existing facilities to make it work. After that, you're going to have to add in the same amount of scholarships in women's sports before you can even consider expanding again for men. All said and done, a men's hockey program could sadly be a pipe dream for us fans.
Not only that, but I feel REALLY bad for the elite NHL talent on that team in Ovi, Datsyuk, Malkin, Semin, Bobrovsky, etc. There was HEAVY political pressure put on that team to use the opportunity to showcase the KHL to prove that its on par with the NHL. So much so that the NHL players supposedly got in the faces of the coaches and managers of the team to cut out the KHL emphasis if they wanted to win. It obviously didn't win.
Sorry, you don't go into an elimination game with a KHL goalie when you have the reigning Vezina winner on your roster. You don't go KHL-heavy on defense when you have plenty of worthy talent in the premier league in the world.
And the worst part. The NHL players are going to be the ones blamed and death threatened for this debacle.

But that said, the job market in places like the Research Triangle Park and Nova, where MANY companies actively seek out those with a VT diploma... that'll be tough competition. Just don't see it feasible right now for me to move back with the job market down here like it is.
There are also a lot of offices in Cassell that would have to be relocated. I think rehab is a much better solution than replacement.
