This is disappointing, as I feel as though Mike Mayock is a pretty good announcer. Losing one of his telecasts to Phil Simms saddens me. I couldn't have stated your last two sentences any better. I absolutely abhor Phil Simms as a commentator. He is a vacuum that sucks all fun and personality out of a broadcast and replaces them with vapid, mind-numbingly dull, insubstantial analysis. How he is a member of the CBS A-team completely baffles me. I can only watch a game he is working on mute.
I vaguely remember a game he was broadcasting where someone hit him with a snowball in the middle of the telecast. I do not have the internet skills to find a clip of this, so maybe a fellow TKPer can help me out. That lone snowball thrower quite succintly summed up my opinion of Phil Simms.
A few years ago, on a local radio show (Elliot in the Morning, which I do not listen to regularly, or care for) they would do a weekly NFL segment with Boomer Esiason. Boomer was a natural with great charisma who had a great rapport with the radio shows' staff. When Boomer got called up to be on the CBS NFL Pre-game show, he had to stop doing the weekly call-in. They tried to replace him the following week with Phil Simms. All I remember is the radio host making a small, harmless joke to which Phil responded quite haughtily, "I don't find that funny!" followed by about 30 seconds of awkward silence. That was the highlight of the segment. They never called Phil back. It was so bad that the radio host apologized for days.

The flaw in your approach - and it's the common flaw any time anyone does this - is comparing Top 10s. It assumes equal levels of talent in each state.
For instance, The Top 10 in VA equates to the Top 35 or so in Texas, due to the fact Texas has a lot more talent. So if Texas gets 8 players from the TX Top 35, it's the same as VT getting 8 players from the VA Top 10.
So to really do an honest comparison, you have to determine the talent distribution. Fortunately Rivals does this for you in their rankings by state, to a degree.

But for VT, the reason instate recruiting matters so much is the huge concentration of resources we place in VA.

I concur with almost everything everyone said. I would just add this: I think we are going to stomp a mudhole in some people next year.
Yeah, I'm just very pessimistic about the ACC's chances of getting the go-ahead. Splitting into divisions is the only way to be sure schedules are equitable. Everyone in the division plays each other, so a division champ can be named. Once you have two division champs, you have a clear championship game. There is no argument, and no appearance of impropriety. There is no bias or favoritism. If you allow the selection to be made without divisions, then it's no longer an objective selection method and suddenly petitions are flying left and right from third and fourth place teams pleading their subjective case and it's a headache I don't think the NCAA wants to deal with.
Take a look at the Top 5 in final college football polls this year, then look at the recruiting rankings of those teams the past 3-4 years.

That will be very interesting if it is approved. Not the first time the ACC has made such a petition. The conference also petitioned to have a championship game with 11 before BC was added.

The best thing about this class for me is, I can look down the list and see a huge amount of guys who I am confident will be starters at some point. We also got more Rivals 4-stars than ever.
On the down side, we whiffed on the top VA prospects. Had we gotten 4-5 of the Top 10 it would have taken the class from good to great.

A very good point. I don't know if there's an answer, but I wonder if recruiting services grade on a curve, judging kids against their class peers instead on a consistent metric

Maybe the NCAA has softened on their stance, but I don't think so. They have been pretty firm on their position that you cannot stage a championship game without splitting into divisions of at least six teams. The ACC wanted to split into divisions of 6 and 5 in 2004 to stage a CG and got no joy from the NCAA. No divisions of at least 6 teams --> no championship game.
Yeah, I think that Conte was up there in that position. Considering he hasn't had any practice time with any of the lineman, I'd say it is very fluid and that was probably just his eye test.

I get where you're coming from, but going to a 9 game schedule and removing the protected rivalries should make it easier to swallow. We'd be playing Clemson, Florida State, NC State, et al. a HELLUVA lot more frequently. Three games in seven years is a helluva lot better than once in six years. And honestly, if you put FSU, Clemson, GT and the Carolina schools in one division and put Miami in the north, that might not be so bad, but there would have to be protected crossovers so that Miami and Florida State could play every year and LOLUVA and Carolina could play every year. What that leaves us with is playing everyone in the North (Miami, BC, Cuse, Pitt, Loserville, & LOLUVA) plus a crossover from the South (GT?) every year and then we'd rotate through the other South teams (FSU, Clemson, and the Carolina 4) twice every six years. The key is getting that ninth league game. 2/6 is still better than what we have now, but I prefer the 3 in 7 rotation you get from nixing the protected games.
Screw ESecPN. We all know they are biased toward their golden child, cough SEC cough, so we coach-up the guys we have and get back to dominating the ACC.

With McLaughlin back and Gibson a very talented senior, Teller as a backup isn't alarming. Alston Smith starting and Caleb Farris (who for most of the season was the most consistent lineman the Hokies had) being a backup? That doesn't sit well with me. Farris played too well and I expect him to walk out of the spring as a starter somewhere.
I have to assume that Conte is the #2 RG as well.
