I've been waiting for this news to hit TKP. Interested to see how people take it. Auburn grad curious to see how an un-biased (mostly) readership reacts to it.
On one hand, yes, lots of people claim ridiculous NC's from dumb years (aTm, Bama, Ole Miss, Minnesota, Bama, ND, USC, etc...) and it's nice to see the NC number that Auburn claims line up with other top-tier football programs.
On the other hand, can't our 2 BCS NCG appearance speak for themselves? Plus the 2004 vacated one? PLUS being the only SEC team to win 3 SEC Championships in the BCS era? Success in the last 20 years outweighs a lot of stuff that happened earlier in terms of recruiting, especially the pre-1960's stuff.
TL;DR: As an Auburn grad, I see why they did it, but trying to say it was for recruiting or whatever (which is something I saw Jay Jacobs argue IIRC), is crazy. This is to satisfy all the old geezers who care so much about keeping up with ridiculously reported NC numbers in the SEC (Ole Miss, Bama, aTm all claim more than 2 NC's). Oh well. Now Auburn is just as dumb as the rest of the country when claiming NC's.

Find a way to convince athletics to pay for a hotel for 60 people and $100 per diem and then you might have have an argument. I'm pretty sure they got just a little over $20 for being there. Considering it was essentially a home game for VCU, nobody is surprised that they had a band there. You have a school from Richmond where many of the students live in the Richmond area against a school that is 3 hours away. Regardless of who lives where, nobody from Blacksburg or few if anyone really from NoVA is going to go down to Richmond to play at a game where our team is going to get crushed just to get paid $20 if they have the choice.
I think it partially has to do with today's generation of students. It seems to me like back in the 80s and 90s the way students socialized were games and events. Now that everyone has access to a smart phone, netflix, and online videos, they spend less time going out to events. I think there are just more options for kids to use their time now then their used to be.
I'm not calling into question whether he's a "decent human being," but maybe some people feel more strongly than I do that this quote, not necessarily in full context, provides some damning evidence that he's not a good guy. My main argument is that I give him some benefit of the doubt. A decent human being can stick his/her foot in his/her mouth at any given time. I consider myself a pretty good guy, but that doesn't mean I haven't had to make my share of retractions and apologies for stupid crap that I've said. There's a reason why public figures tend to have "handlers" and most pro athletes and coaches have PR people approve what they say before they say it. In college, that's not common, and on-the-job experience goes a long way. As BCO says, JJ just may be in over his head at this point and probably should never have been put in this position. Maybe he would have benefitted from more experience being an assistant and learning from a more polished head coach.
I just get stoked seeing that French has written another piece.

I'm dating myself, but back before the only way to get any information about signing day was through the Hokie Huddler newspaper-the annual recruiting issue would come in the mail a week or two after signing day. It would have a squib on each recruit-nothing near as in depth as French's analysis.
This stuff is golden.
Castle is not very big though when compared to UK, however we still can't fill ours to 50% in conference play. :(
They give out VT gifts to students for some of the games. This year I think I saw they were giving out bobble waist (not quite a bobble head) hokie bird figurines, and a scarf and probably one or two others. Not to be sexist, but the majority of basketball fans are males and not many guys are enticed to go to a basketball game for a scarf. Still, I would hope more students would show up to a free game, especially one as big as VT.
The fact of the matter is, we suck. Its hard to GO to a game, let alone watch them play on TV, when we are so bad. The biggest factor in the lack of attendance is performance... Its not bad advertising, its not the students being lazy, it is none of that, it is performance.
This is only an excuse. It was Xmas break for VCU too and their band showed up. I'm sure they could have recruited enough band members by giving them a $100 stipend and a free night's stay in Richmond. Instead we went the cheap route and just offered local people free tickets to the game to play.
He is so explosive at the snap, it seriously looks like he knows the snap count. He gets off the line before O-Linemen stand up... I love it!
These SEC teams are getting really annoying with this!

He's a great pick up! I loved this kid once i heard about him. I was one of the few that actually thought he would end up at VT.
If we can add to more classes the next two years that are as staked as this one we will be looking really good in a few years.
I read on another site that Trey Edmunds leg break was comparable to Kevin Ware's, the Louisville guard who broke his leg in the Final Four last year and had to redshirt this year.
VT has had a number of "should be ready for August" rehabs take until October or later before they are ready to go. Considering that, it sure would be great to have McKenzie and Williams primed.
Saw him walking around campus the other day with Andrew Ford without any brace/crutches. Hope that's a good sign for next season!

I've said this a few times in various ways, so I have to agree with this completely. 2015 is going to be an amazing year. 2016 is when we go the distance. It'll be the best 2 years in VT history outside of '99.
