I agree, Seth needed to go.
But he needed to go in March, right after the last game. Not in late April, a month and a half after our last game, while he was on the recruiting trail, and only finding out about the firing through media outlets while he was 1-on-1 with a recruit. The timing and unprofessional nature was bad in itself, but the issue was only compounded with the down the hall bargain basement hiring of first time head coach JJ. Just an ugly mess all around that showed just how clueless our Athletic Department is in regards to the sport of basketball.
Frankly, I'm surprised attendance was that high for SG's last season. As a student I'm glad I got to see last year's OSU game; if we can get the kind of buzz that was present at that game for the team in general, we can find our way back onto the map. I'm excited to see what our shiny new AD can do in the next few years.

I am looking forward to our future as a program and do have confidence in our current coaching staff, just thought with all the discussion of the challenges Logan faced the last couple of years, it would be good to see exactly how different those years were statistically. It definitely gives you a sense of how much more productive 2011 was compared to this year. Finding that we were 110th in third down conversions for 2013 wasn't shocking but really showed some of our key challenges, especially coupled with some of the other stats on points and yard per play.
I do hope we treat JJ with dignity and respect and that when he leaves he leaves better off because of his association with VT. Guy is a decent guy, who has been thrown (admittedly through his own choice) into a hell of a situation in the name of "dignity and respect" as defined within our Athletic Department.
This whole "we're not compensated enough" argument is a sham, and its mind numbing that the media (led by ESPN, who has an incentive to want these players to be able to capitalize on their own names, so that they, as a network, can tap into the lucrative marketing playhouse that is awaiting them in college sports) has bitten hard on it.
These kids (and I'm specifically talking about football and basketball here, the ones driving this push) already get a free education (UNC being the obvious exception), free room and board, free textbooks, free food, a monthly stipend, they get new clothing basically whenever they want, they have free access to special workout facilities, and they get unlimited access to tutors to help them with their academic endeavors for their duration at the school. For many, they leave with a degree from an institution they would not have been able to attend without football, which will prop them up for better jobs in their careers (assuming they don't go to the majors) while graduating debt-free. If you're an out-of-state student (of which most of the athletes pushing for this are) the all-inclusive benefits offered to them total in the hundreds of thousands, and they don't pay a dime. All the while they are essentially at a compensated intern-level position in the field they hope to continue their careers within as the school prepares them for their multi-million dollar jobs after they leave.
And yet, somehow this isn't good enough for them. I'm sorry, I just have an EXTREMELY difficult time being on the athlete's side on this argument while knowing just the full totality of the package that they get with a full ride scholarship at a major institution.

Those NorthWestern kids are smart. They'll get it started. Interested to see how the NFL weighs in on this, considering they have the most clout and the most to benefit by college football players continuing to play football for their farm system. Let's hope they don't "lock out". I can stand losing the NFL, Baseball, Hockey, and basketball to lockouts, but college football would be too much.

We're still fast as ever, but we're just not tough. For a while we recruited speed over toughness, and now its starting to show when teams are able to push us around. Look at RB as a specific point. Lots of emphasis on shifty with speed, but we don't really have anyone who can just truck a bitch on a given play. Give me a Humes or Evans on the team we have now and you'll see an offense that'll move the ball a lot better than it currently can.
More than anything, I want this team to play with a chip on their shoulders. I want them to be able to manhandle the opponent lined up against them at any given time. Right now, we're too passive. We have no attitude. We lose the physical battles on a weekly basis (outside of the DLine). Last year, we saw improvements in this area, and I fully expect to see it continue this year. I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to the future growth of the program.
If we get Javon Harrison he would probably be the fastest player on the team and maybe in the country. But that is a big if. Oh and I agree, the last super fast player we had was David Wilson IMO.
Seth's scorched earth policy had run its course. He had to go. We were in a bad position, but we made that worse by hiring cheap and providing no support whatsoever to the basketball program.
It's a dumpster fire now, just let Babcock clean house and hit the reset button. Step 1: Reenergize the fanbase. JJ isn't going to do that. Cut bait.
A Jack Tyler quality walk on who also kicks?...reminds me of a certain game winning catcher of the 2012 sugar bowl...
Does anyone else sense that we have lost some team speed in the last decade? In 1999, we had Moore, Vick and Davis, the fastest guys at their respective positions in the country. Then there was DHall, Marcus, Royal, Wilson...etc.
Who is the fastest guy in the program right now? Who is faster than their competition at their position? It used to be a big advantage for us, I don't see it anymore. Agree?
And if hiring Johnson had the pure goal of keeping Green, it was a very, very shortsighted terrible decision by the Athletic Department for the future of the program.
We were bad with Green last year and we are even worse this year. Having Green did close to nothing in regards to recruiting for the future. If that was the goal (and I truly hope it wasn't), it was a bad one, and shows just how out of touch Weaver was with basketball in general.
Not to change the subject from we suck at fundraising (which we do) and we don't pay our assistants enough (which we don't) but I found this interesting:

If Bud Foster is recruiting a kicker, you know he's wanted. Given his LB background, I would not be shocked at all to see him on the field on D in his Tech career. Hell he could be the next Jack Tyler.
They are trying to suit him up.
