JJ doesn't make much. So we should have the money to can him. If we can find the right coach now (i.e., post season end) then you go ahead and grab that guy. I would love to actually have a decent bball team to follow. I have to put up with all these Iowa State, Iowa, and Wisconsin fans where I live too...

And based on the stat of ~9,953 current Hokie Club member from the David Teel article that would mean doubling the size of the current Hokie Club and being able to use all of the Hokie Club funds for football salaries. Seems slightly unrealistic.

My gut says with the injuries and NCAA transfer holdups, I really feel that he should be allowed a third year. He is still motivating the players to play hard.
My head says, I don't see any plans, I don't see any improvement, call an end to the experiment. But the AD might need an extra year to start raising funds so that he can make a big hire.

I saw JJ's contract come up in conversation yesterday. It's a good point, would you want to extend him? Of course not. But in year 2 of 5 now, going into year 3, this is where you usually extend a coach who you like. If you don't extend him, you are saying he's got one year left. And, of course, that's brutal for recruiting.
So a lot of people say "you gotta give him more than 2 years to clean up this mess." Actually, no you don't. The way contracts/extensions/recruiting works, you basically have 2 years to prove you're the guy or you gotta make a change.
i read it in one of the early Orange Bowl articles. it specifically gave the example of an ACC team being in the playoff while the Orange Bowl hosted a semi-final, a 2nd ACC team would be placed in either the Peach, Cotton or Fiesta. i guess it could have been wrong or miswritten, but i assume if it's true for ACC, the same is true for the other 4 conferences. with 7 spots open after the playoff, there is plenty of room to ensure every league gets 1 of the 7 spots, so i don't think it's a reach by any means...

Nah, they really support their other sports. It's real. Oliver, in particular, is lauded for all of his coaching hires and facility upgrades.....He's done great with everyone but London.
What shocks me is that they really don't care about football. In the phases of grief, or whatever, they are past they "wishing we were good at football" stage. There is no discussion about football here, even in the middle of the season. Ever. And that's why they're screwed, they don't even care enough to be mad anymore.
It's not dissimilar to VT and hoops, and is an interesting case study on the effect of keeping a lame duck coach past his due. I shudder to think of the disinterest VT hoops will garner next year if JJ isn't let go. That's what uva football has to look forward to in the 2014 season.
uva does not wish they were VT. They don't. They would love to be Texas or Florida. They would love to be relevant at football and keep their non-rev's success. And VT does not wish to be uva. We would not swap our football success for their sustained non-rev success (they will be preseason #1 in baseball). We'd like to be better at non-rev's, and we're showing some growth there, but we wouldn't swap the 2nd longest bowl streak for a few non-rev National Championships.
Both schools are happy with what they are but they'd like more success in their deficiencies.
See, I don't think it's an automatic guarantee that a playoff conference would send two teams. If a conference only has one really good team that goes to the playoffs, but the rest are ranked down in the 20s or lower...AND the their home bowl is a semi-final....I don't think the conference is guaranteed a second bowl spot.
Or at the very least, I haven't seen the proper proof.

The back-and-forth conversations with both bidders put Haines in the middle of the negotiations. ESPN and Fox knew how close Raycom was to the ACC. For example, Swoffords son, Chad, is Raycoms director of new media and has been with the company five years.
Now, it doesn't come out and say that this is specifically WHY they did it, but Swofford's son was the Director of New Media at Raycom when the deal was signed. That means the ACC, led by John Swofford, was negotiating with Raycom, led by Chad Swofford, who was competing against Fox and ESPN, and somehow the little guy won against the 2 media giants, even with an industry described "lowball contract".
We do need to up pay, but it starts with our long-time assistants, such as Torrian, and not our newly hired ones. I think everyone is looking at Searels' contract and saying "Oh, he's going to make only $265,000 for the next 2 years?" When in actuality, he'll make $265,000 this year, $280,900 in 2015 as long as we make a bowl, and then $297,754 in 2016 under the same condition of making a bowl and he'll get that $50,000 retention bonus. Now that's assuming that the system sticks to the 6% raise for making a bowl game like what Grimes was going to get. I would love for us to pay every coach of ours more than any other coach at their position in the nation just so the only chance of them leaving us would be for a bump from position coach to coordinator or coordinator to HC, but we can't do that.

2 spots remain for ND or other at larges from any of the 10 leagues
there is no cap on the number of teams that can come from one conference unless you consider a conference having 4 playoff teams, their 1 guaranteed spot and grabbing both at large spots, then the cap would be 7 :)
so for the ACC, SEC, B1G, Big12 and Pac12, yes, they are guaranteed 1 spot, but if any of them make the playoff, then they are guaranteed 2 spots, and if and of them have 2 teams in the playoffs, they are guaranteed 3 spots. they will all have 1 spot OUTSIDE of the playoff guaranteed to them.
