Perhaps the news will be good:

Interesting comparison. Without giving this much thought, I would probably argue Boise State is more the Tampa Bay Devil Rays of College Football. They do more with less than even we do. Take a look at their national recruiting rankings, courtesy of 247sports since 2008:

2008 : 60
2009 : 63
2010 : 111
2011 : 53
2012 : 60
2013 : 55
2014 : 97

Now compare that against Tech:

2008 : 15
2009 : 25
2010 : 32
2011 : 36
2012 : 21
2013 : 21
2014 : 22

Now we have oft discussed the merits and caveats of recruiting rankings, and I'm not trying to have an argument about which coaching staff developed more top end talent. What I am trying to say is that Boise has managed to put together a collection of players that execute the system well enough to dominate their league and compete - if not defeat - the big boys when given the chance. The Rays, over the last 8 years are a great example of this approach. Even the Red Sox - excuse me while I go throw up - this past season assembled a collective that included stars, prospects and a good deal of retreads (Cody Ross & Jonny Gomes) that won a title.

Regardless, this does further the discussions we have had on the site over the last year regarding how the coaching staff needs to continue to assemble a team full of players that fit the system - running back, o-line, etc. - and not just the most athletic or talented group of individuals.

Tampa HAS NO FANS. None. Their fans are called "The Blue Seats" for a reason. They 1,000 fans that they do have are terrible, awful, dreadful people. On the internet, you don't want to talk to Rays fans. They post things like porn "Money shots" as gif's for big home runs.

They have a genius, wiley, clever, annoying-as-hell coach. Joe Maddon is a complete opposite of Frank Beamer. They dress up like clowns for road trips. Does Frank Beamer dress our guys up in "nerd themed" clothes for road trips?

They have Luke Scott, Yuneal Escobar and that reliever who got off of a rape charge in Texas. They've got (or had) Fernando Rodney and his stupid crooked hat and Sean Rodriquez and his stupid face. They've got the educated but mouthy David Price.

They have no money, none. If you want to compare Tampa to someone, it's Fresno State. That's a program that has won some, has had some sketchy characters and has no money at all.

Frankly, I could not think of a worse choice to compare to VT. Yes, I'm a Red Sox fan. But this comparison will drive me nuts all day! Grrrarrrrrraaaaarr!

"Frank picked up some random trash from a seat?"

Frank is stronger then he looks....Mike London is a pretty big guy.

while we're on the subject, redbeard brewing has opened in staunton. small operation, but it's a laid back atmosphere and quality brews.

Atlanta braves would be a better comparison:
Bobby cox= frank Beamer
Great regular season performance, players and coaches love them, disappointing post season performance

Both guys turned around programs that were in bad shape when they started

Atlanta is middle of the pack in payroll, I believe VT is mid 30's in revenue

Both are good at finding under the radar talent and developing talent

Forgot one relatively close too.
Apocalypse Brewing in Forest, which is Bedford County. In the old Forest Fire Company building.
Thy make some real nice stuff.

Also, there's one down near Martinsville. The name escapes me.

If you go to The River, the head brewer there is Jason Anderson. He's new as the brewer there last summer. We worked together. Tell him the brewer from Roanoke Railhouse says, "Hi." That's easier to remember than my name .

Not a bad analogy. Baseball and College football are similar beasts. Historic and deep pockets will almost always trump everything else. Its just not a fair playing field most of the time.
