I stopped reading at "the first VT game I ever watched was against Boise State", not because that means he doesn't understand the nature of building a program and down cycles, but because that feels like yesterday and it made me feel older than the Sphinx.

They absolutely have to land this Harrison kid. Phillips is a more well rounded receiver and a solid deep threat, but Harrison is explosive. I can't emphasize enough how much he reminded me of Cordarrelle Patterson. He could give the Hokies the explosive deep threat that will open up possession receivers and the running game. They didn't have that presence this year, and that is what allowed those unblocked defenders to get in the box and stifle the running game.
There are more rumors that Cato is looking to graduate and transfer from Marshall. I would take either him or Murphy in a heartbeat!
I have not watched Murphy, but if Loeffler is actively pursuing him, that means they have less faith than advertised in Leal (and based on what I saw of Leal in spring and fall camp, such a lack of faith is justified) and they don't want to throw Motley, Ford, or Durkin into the fire yet.
1) Lack of an elite back, although I think that Edmunds was underutilized. He has more upside than many backs that have had special seasons at VT (Cedric Humes comes to mind.) Loeffler didn't lean on him enough for long stretches.
2) Skill position blocking
The offensive line play is solid. If Ryan Williams or Kevin Jones is the tailback, they have monster seasons with how the group performed this year.
Turns out we didn't lose money on the 2011 Orange Bowl.
The ACC is essentially taking a conservative approach in how it manages the future of its members. Instead of allowing the teams to take all of the prize money from participating in a bowl, it takes all of the bowl money from every team and splits it up evenly. It also reimburses teams for a certain amount of their expenses and most teams come out "winners". The hope is that programs will operate within their budgets instead of going for the big payday each year.
What I don't understand is how this works for shitty teams like UVA who don't go to a bowl (thus having no expenses) yet still get a piece of the bowl pot. I understand that their are intangible benefits for both the school as an academic institution and the football program, but socialism to this degree eventually fails when too many people become complacent. Part of me wonders what kind of structure the SEC has because given the yearly turnover and hemorrhaging of money, I can't imagine they have a socialist system in place.

Extremely simplified, the ACC is like a communist state. VT makes money, it all goes to the ACC, then VT gets back 1/12th of all bowl money gathered by the ACC from every team.
The huge loss showed in 2011 by VT was a misleading accounting trick that showed getting paid $22.5 million and then subtracting all the costs of going ($3.3 million) and then subtracting what it payed to the ACC's bowl pool and not accounting for what the ACC paid back. This is the key image to the whole thing(it's the 2012 Orange Bowl, but it covers everything)

Agree 100% on competition being better for improvement and also like that we are at least a possible suitor. I definitely could be wrong re: Murphy's potential at VT or Motley's. I am also not ready to write off Leal ...

Vick wasn't even the #1 recruit in the state. That was Ronald Curry if I'm not mixing my years up.
I would definitely take Davis over Byrn. No question. Davis was much more dependable, he was able to actually win his one on one matchups. Byrn was productive only when Loeffler was able to get him matched up against linebackers or drag him across the field against zone coverage. Davis had over 900 yards receiving his senior year. Byrn had 660. Davis had 5 touchdowns. Byrn had 2.
I love The Paperboy as much as the next guy but Davis is a better receiver, no doubt about it.

I had not heard of Cato transferring, so I googled "Cato transfer" and I learned that there is a WVU football blog "WeMustIgniteThisCouch" dot com, and I stopped searching for more information because I was laughing so hard.
