Something to look forward to on Mondays! This team may have been a shit-show this last season, but it's still VT football and I'm pretty sure we all love it. Plus this kind of season might get rid of the "let's have a blackout in Lane Stadium!" kind of fans. Staying positive.

Bud Foster: American for Badass

I heard bama was looking past ND focusing on the VT game. Hey Nicky, you maaaad? LETS GO TECH!

Love twitter, and am on it all the time (as a consumer of information, anyway), but don't really know the in's and out's of how it works. I had a feeling the reason I didn't see it was because it was a reply and didn't show up in his timeline, as such.

Thanks for taking the time to go find it for me (and hopefully others interested). And, most of all and to the point, so glad to hear that he is planning to come back!

I wish we knew more but I am ok with not rushing it. Sounds like some coaches on staff are working on moving on anyway so why shake it up so fast? If changes are coming them I am sure they are talking to potential replacements now and making sure that if they make a move the program will benefit.

With all the talk about Kirby Smart and other younger and trendier DC's, I think these stats officially prove that Bud Foster is the best defensive coordinator in the country.
Just look at this year- we had two young and some would say over-matched players in the secondary in Bonner and Cole, two linebackers that were seen as liabilities in coverage in Taylor and Tyler, no proven Whip linebacker, and yet by the end of the year, Bud's unit was back to dominating offenses like it was 2006.

...does anyone else feel like opposing DCs are like the coaches in The Waterboy reading coaching for dummies on the sidelines?

With change comes risk. He seems like a good fit with Offensive philosophy and is from the area. He has proven success. Would he gel with the team and other staff, including CFB? Can he recruit both coaches and players over the long haul?

This is why I like CFB's approach to keeping personnel matters personal.

....but, at the same time, he (or any other young, up-and-coming candidate) has to realize that the opportunity will be there for someone when Beamer steps down. He would also consider Bud's age, Shane's inexperience, and the program's tendancy to try to maintain stability in the coaching staff in looking at the long-term potential of taking our OC role now.

And, given how promising Shaw looks for Stanford, given that Shaw's alma mater is Stanford, and the fact that Shaw is only 40, the opportunity to be HC there in the foreseeable future is relatively dim.

it's not his style .. and i'm totally OK with that .. he doesn't want to draw stupid attention to himself or the program .. and make no mistake -- it's stupid attention. it's a classy thing to do and i wouldn't expect to hear much of anything from beamer or the administration until a hire (or hires) are made.

Good to know the Hville stands for Huntsville and not Hooville. Might have started a riot.

Not a chance he would do that. If we named an outsider a coach in waiting then Foster should and would leave. He's been hanging around for years waiting for a chance to be a head coach, if we hired someone else then that's it, he's out of here. And he's probably as valuable to our success as a program as Beamer is.

With great linebacker play, this is going to be another great defense. Just have to see how the offense shakes out with a lot more new starters than this side of the ball and with possible coaching shake ups.

Vinson Painter.

Very good column, looking forward to the offseason a bit now!

If changes are coming, why is Beamer so secretive? I know it's part of his character, and thus why the Spring Game has never been aired on ESPN (until last year), but it's very disconcerting. Most programs would have openly announced that X, Y and Z are being let go and we're heading into a coaching search. Instead, he's secretly helping his old coaches find jobs and trying to hire a coordinator. At least, that's what we speculate. I guess, as long as his old assistants know, it's not a problem, because they won't be blindsided. But, it's leaving the media and the fans on edge. Do fans have a right to know? Or, should we keep guessing, hoping, and waiting for one morning's press conference announcing 3-4 coaches out and new coordinator already hired?

It is up to the position coaches to recruit and develop talent by teaching skills and techniques. The coordinator puts it all together to design plays and the overall team philosophy. The design, timing, and execution of plays definitely requires individual skills. However, if you don't have the individual skills to execute a play properly it is a poorly designed play. Individual skills that affect execution are speed, quickness, strength, vision, recognition, balance, footwork, etc... Although players are the ones that actually perform on the field, the coaches sure have a large impact on the development, preparation, practice, and play-calling that will affect the outcome.

Coaches and ultimately the coordinator need a game plan that has a reasonable chance of success using the talent they have available. If you don't practice enough under game speed to perfect a play it probably won't work in a real situation. If you cannot find ways to adapt to defensive adjustments you will also fail. These are coaching issues.

My criticism is not that the offensive coaches don't work hard and do some things well. It is that they are not good enough to recruit more talent, develop it, plan and successfully execute a game plan (under pressure) that will lead to a National Championship team. The defense seems capable of doing it. If a NC is what CFB and VT want then coaching changes are overdue.

say with a great degree of certainty that the pep hamilton stuff isn't "totally" rumor .. i think that there have been feelers sent out and i'm sure he has responded with "i'll listen" .. a lot of things going in VT's favor with this. it sounds like he may be getting a lot of interest .. so we won't be the only in the mix. fwiw - i think that VT/Frank Beamer has a lot that he would favor but if anyone claims that he is already (behind the scenes) agreed to be our OC -- i'd say that's a rumor. i keep seeing baylor's oc popping up, shawn elliott .. and there are probably a few others in mind.

Yeah, he didn't want to come here. And the biggest reason he is at uva and still not at bama is because his dad (i believe) is always in and out of the uva hospital with something and he wanted to be closer to his dad and family.
