I hope this isn't the case. I really want to see Exum moved back to safety next year.
This predictability is mostly about defensive coaches (and fans) being able to pick what will happen. The players on the field still have to watch the play unfold to decide what to do. There is a certain amount of predictability on every play with down and distance and score. Most of us can intuitively figure out if it might be a run or pass.
What we don't know, except for maybe VT, is what kind of play it might be, where it is headed, and who is getting the ball. To me predictability is knowing who is getting the ball and in what way. What pass routes are the receivers are running? What hole is the runner going to? I think VT is too predictable in how they execute rather than, "is it a run vs. pass?". I think the defensive players can see what is happening by watching for signs.
When I see a good offense execute I am often fooled by play fakes and misdirections (just like the camera operators). I see receivers adjust routes to get open and the QB on the same page as the receiver. I see running backs follow blockers and make cut backs to the open holes. I see the defense getting fooled.
I don't know if you can coach good execution or if it is a "football sense" or athleticism of good players. I do know you can plan and prepare a good scheme and techniques. What I see in terms of predictability is just poorly designed plays. They don't fool anyone and don't create confusion in the defense. The scheme is too easy to defend and we don't have a dominating O-line. The plays are slow developing because the offense is thinking too much about assignments.
The offense seems too scripted rather than spontaneous. Good coaches are able to sense the rythm and flow of the game to make the right play calls. I think Tech's coaches are not very good at that and are especially poor under pressure. The don't have good "football coaching sense".

I took your data and added a column for whether or not the play was "successful". I.e., pick up at least 1/3 of the yardage to go on 1st down, at least 1/2 on 2nd down, or yields a 1st down if it's 3rd. The results, when totaled, are not pretty. Overall, we ran 15 successful plays compared to 24 unsuccessful plays. In ACC play, we ran 6 successful plays compared to 18 unsuccessful plays. Those are not good percentages... And the unsuccessful plays were often VERY unsuccessful.
This is great stuff. Thanks for effort here!

Great pics on beers so far. It seems Local San Diego brews have really made a place for themselves...
Carlis plays for Stateville High, which is nearby for me, and just led them to a one-loss season and their first conference title in a long time. I've heard rave reviews from co-workers who have watched him. Basically, that he's an explosive playmaker with his arm or feet. I hope to get out to see one of their playoff games and will try to post more if I do. Also, I've heard that he's strong as it relates to intangibles/leadership. Given the fact that VT didn't drop their offer during a junior season that Parker missed due to injury, I have to think they're really high on him. I definitely would consider Hodges and Parker 1A and 1B in terms of the next long-term starter (after a potential transition year with Leal starting).
The offense often looks like they are thinking too much. The timing is off and the plays develop slowly. To me that signals preparation for the game was poor. Something is happening in the game that the team was not prepared to handle or that new wrinkles were put into the game plan that the team has not had enough time to learn and execute.
I think they need to make the offense simpler until they can execute flawlessly. Maybe the problem is lack of experience on the line in some spots.
I see screen passes work for other teams. Why can't VT do it? For VT I think it is mostly a problem of when the play is called rather than execution. The play calling has been suspect often when I watch.

In other news, water is wet. I don't think this is one that Bitter needed to post, I wasn't even thinking him leaving was a possibility. And honestly, even if he were to leave, Leal has looked good in the few snaps I've seen him play (albeit, a very few number of snaps). What I want to see from the coaching staff is less of this shotgun spread crap they've been doing with LT3. He's not the same kind of runner as Newton like everyone seems to think he is, he's a power runner without great moves but does have a good arm especially on the deep ball. Line up in the I, ram it down their throats, and then run play-action out of that. I feel like every week our first 3 or 4 plays out of the I-formation are play-actions, well who's gonna bite when we haven't even run it yet?!
Miami is that guy who brags for months about how amazing his costume is going to be, then forgets about it until the night before and winds up going as the Joker for the fourth year in a row.
Clemson is that seemingly-plain looking girl you know that wears an incredibly slutty costume that gets everyone excited for one night and then goes back to loose sweaters and disappoints everyone until next year.
Lots of tough picks this week! Probably looking at another 2-4 week....I just hope my first one is one of the "2" part.
Our beloved Hokies to cover in the I-don't-know-why pick of the week.
aTm and Johnny Football cover.
TT covers, partially on the strength of young ladies like the second on the right in a I-heart-Tech t-shirt...only way that could be better would be if the shirt was maroon.
Ducks cover and break the trojans (I know, it was just too easy).
K-state rides the cowboys. They cover by plenty
Bama covers easily. And by the way....the BCOATV....a Pacer???!! what, they couldn't find a purple Gremlin? I guess the altered reality of the tailgaters make them think it's real car.
My reaction to not being able to find a Clemson fan doing the slow motion pinky "O":

It sounds like Sifl and Olly. Chester should definatly make an apperance on your show. Otherwise, nice job.
who is a fellow VT grad. He made the statement after last year's VT-UVA game (38-0, bro) that you want your rival to be very competitive, and that it's hard to consider it a rivalry game if you win every year.
I fall into the camp of those who consider UVA being 0-12 a sign that all in the universe is in order.
Being a Charlottesville area resident, I always find it interesting how myopic and introspective wahoos are. It's even reflected in the local news coverage (which I have dubbed "All-wahoo, All the Time"). Local tv station sports, for example. Typical sports segment on the local news, on a Saturday that UVA is on a bye week, there is a World Series game, a big Nascar weekend, and a ton of other college football, national stuff going on. Their stories include a run down of UVA women's field hockey, UVA swimmers, probably a story on what Ryan Zimmerman is doing in the off-season (because he's a former UVA player, you know). It's almost like no sports story gets on the air without the words "former UVA" in it. The script is probably cleared through the UVA SID office. It's amazing.
So it's always entertaining here to see the locals endure a season like UVA is having. It's a kind of salve for the Hokie soul.

Easily your best work of the season.
