VT has won the NIT twice. In 1973 and 1995. In 1973 the NCAA tournament had 25 teams so the NIT was a way bigger deal. There were only 16 teams in the NIT. (UCLA won their 7th consecutive NCAA title) You could argue that team was one of our best ever. We beat Notre Dame in the final. We won all four of our games by a combined 5 points. The best team ever was probably was 1966-67 where we made the elite eight.

In 1995 there were 64 teams in the NCAA. There are now 68 so making the NCAA isn't as tough as it used to be. The 42nd team in 1973 would not even make the NIT. That said I am still exicited about this team.

It's funny that when he was being recruited to Florida it was rumored one of the pitches they used was that he would be used like Percy Harvin type role. I hope the RB depth issue doesn't become a problem, saw a rumor of DJ Coles possibly playing some RB in the spring but figure that was just hearsay.

Would be pretty ballsy to move both starting tackles from last year but sometimes it takes those type of moves to produce the best results but I guess the move of Lanier to TE and DeChristopher to G would all depend on how good Via/Becton/Painter play. Would love to see if Stinespring is the coach that can put on the light for Painter.

The big problem with not moving Lanier is that the Hokies power run game does not work without two run-blocking tight ends. You saw the Hokies abandon a lot of red-zone running (though I was absolutely in favor of more passing) because Andre Smith was the only reliable TE last year.

My concern for next year is lining up and running David Wilson into a brick wall 20 times a game with inside zone runs. We just can't do that. Josh Oglesby just posted some record-position strength numbers for the offseason. He needs to be the powerback. I am really hoping the coaches run stretch and sweep plays with DW and don't make me an inside-only runner.

DW really needs to play that slot-Percy Harvin role next year too, the player that opposing defenses always have to be aware of. Let's hope we see a lot of David Wilson straight-line speed and LT's cannon arm resulting in touchdown passes.

I saw McCray a little bit last spring and he looked pretty beastly. I am kind of surprised they are moving Collins...

Now that Drager has moved backed to TE there's not a chance in hell that Lanier gets bumped over which gives me the sads.

Does anyone know about how effective Hopper was at RB in HS?

Now seeing that JR Collins will possibly be moved to tackle...not sure about this move since it would be a redshirt freshmen (Mcray or Perez-Means) starting at his spot

I still keep hearing people, like Bilas, say we're in regardless of how we perform. I don't by that at all. To speak to your point JLM I believe it was last year that all the upsets in conference tournaments are what really kept us out. I'm rooting for all chalk. I don't know if it would be better luck for us if I fill out every mid-major tournament with the ones winning or pull the reverse jinx and have upsets in every round.

First 2 games against non-Carolina teams is a big plus to me since there shouldn't be any home crowd advantage until we go to the point of potentially facing Duke.

Unless we get to the title game we have previously beaten all of our possible opponents

unless top seeds start getting knocked out of conference tournaments (which could start happening tomorrow night with VCU, we must pull for them to lose).

We need to be GT, I think that will be enough but we shall see

did you ever see his twitpic of his leg? He had it sliced open from the top of his knee all the way up to just below his groin... It looked TERRIBLE.

I doubt he does much in the spring but looking forward to seeing him this fall

That was just turble. The comeback was admirable, but the slow starts will do us in every time. On the radio post game T-Bell and Seth both mentioned the lack of depth. I wish we'd stop with the excuses. The reason why we lost is because we came out in a daze, Clemson broke the zone and we went down 9-24--when the guys were at their freshest. Did Eddie slip up again or did he not practice well? If we go dancing it's going to take a hell-of-a run.

Love getting embarrassed on national TV.

I'm feeling the same way, which means we'll probably win.

I love my birds...

But this game has massive failure written all over it. I hope I'm wrong.

A win against Clemson and we should be good. It's almost as if Tech's constant buzz about always being on the bubble has helped us stay relevant nationally, at least in the media's eye.

However, I think that the ACC tourney is a potential lose-lose for VT. Should they lose to Clemson, they likely match up against Wake. Wouldn't that bring the RPI and SOS down? I'm not sure how conference tourneys impact these figures or if its just like a regular season game.

If Tech gets the bye, then I'm concerned about rematching a Clemson team even more desperate to be included in the NCAA. I don't like it when VT has to match "desperate" teams. We can bring our A game against UNC and Dook, playing with a chip on our shoulders, but I don't think we match the level of other bubble teams looking for a validating win.

I think a win against Clemson regardless of what happens in the ACCT and we're in. If we lose to Clemson I think we need to win the thing or look really, really good in the finals.

The thing that disappointed me the most about the game is that no one stepped up to lead, on senior night, a night that's supposed to celebrate the guys who have been here for the long haul and who should know how to get it done. Not only will we need Allen and MD23 to play infinitely better if we want to go dancing, but they need to lead these guys too.

I just hope the (other) fans don't think we're automatically in the big dance. I just hope the student turnout is better than when we played GT, because that was pathetic.

Just found out that they were giving away free tickets all during the day at D2 and at 6:30 at Cassel. Hopefully that makes a difference in the student turnout.
