But unless you consider me "old" (and maybe I am!) I kindly propose that there is a 3rd group made up of practical realists with overachieving tendencies commonplace in VT alumni.

I metriculated in '92, so I had a solid year of us being bad. Then the Independence Bowl. I was in Lane for each loss in the 0-2 start, stood there in silence in Lane with everyone else trying to absorb the Miami win, and reveled in the thumping we gave Texas in NOLA that year.

'99 was awesome. And then it sucked a little at the very end.

So did every strong start/high ranking and skid in the early 2000's. And every big loss more recently.

I honestly thought we had the firepower to simply outscore everyone this year, and I was wrong. This was based on my long-held thesis of what we could do with an O to match our D. But that's cool, because Spring practice starts in 6 weeks. And I'll be up for it again because David Wilson eats Chik-fil-A on Sundays and don't forget it!

Maybe it was that I only had 1 year without a bowl, or that I witnessed much of the early rise to national relevance at an impressionable age, but I don't want the ride to stop.

I appreciate what we have, but it's not enough because it never is for me (and I suspect for others as well). Something can always be tweaked or adjusted despite the risks that it was already fine the way it was. As demonstrated by extra holes that I've drilled in my wall, countless broken gadgets, and scrapped code that I've rewritten.

I thought the argument for F4H's thesis was good and the points, at least for me, were well received.

Regarding what he wrote, I do think there is a distinct contrast between the young and the old fans in terms of expectations and results. The majority of the older crowd, based on who I've talked to, seems to be beyond grateful just to be in conversation and have bragging rights over their ACC friends in the region. For the most part, the students who became fans during the ACC years aren't satisfied. Both are understandable, it's human nature–everyone wants a little more pie. The older crowd has been served and are full, the kids still want seconds.

In reality, the program probably has an equal chance of winning the national title and regressing to the mean.

Over a long period of time we'll probably do both. In the now, I think we have a much better chance to win a MNC.

He needs blocking so he can get get passes off. He will be able to see over the line so will see the field well. Maybe we could use the TE more on passing. I am more concerned about how well DW blocks against the blitz.

Great QBs see and react to the D and are in synch with their teamates. Can he make the hot read on a blitz? Do we even have a hot read? Until he sees a lot of game pressure it will be difficult to know how good he will be.

Is how he differs from Cam Newton as far as pre-playing hype and evaluation. Honestly don't know anything about CN. Did they expect greatness from him, and at what position, etc?

how about let's get started with "canon for an arm, let me tell you". Although I will use this one from time to time myself, I'll probably try to stick with laser or rope.

Completed 118 of 204 passes for 1,535 yards and 20 touchdowns as a quarterback his senior season … Competed in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, catching two passes … Threw four touchdown passes in a 50-46 loss to James Monroe in the Group AA Division 3 championship game in December … Ran for 842 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior … As a defensive back, recorded 80 tackles and intercepted four passes … Had more than 1,500 yards of total offense his junior season … Caught 55 passes as a receiver his sophomore season.

I'm excited for the Thomas era to begin, but I'm realistic enough to realize we're not getting a polished product. He's got all the intangibles to be great, but it's going to take time. If I remember correctly the reason why recruiting services all classed him as a tight end/athlete was because he was raw coming out of high school.

Rummaging through the boards and rumor mill I'm constantly having to correct clowns who inanely talk about him being an Ed Wang type deal where we stuff a former TE into an uncomfortable roll and hope for the best. When it comes to the OL yes we've been disastrous but is everyone enough of a tard to think we were so desperate we took a pure TE and pinned the tail on the QB donkey. The guy did play QB in hs. I'm too lazy to grab his stats but from what I remember he was adept at it. Also, if that 20+ dart on 3rd in the ACCCG is any indication i'm not exactly worried. I personally think it will rely more on Stinkspring to build an offense more on this flexible receiving core over the gut punch run n gun we've become complacent with.

I have a hard time saying we were "close" to winning. Maybe uber competitive is a better term. But my take on it was that we were, indeed, a top 5 team that year that just happened to play the top 2 teams in the same season. We should have lost those games, and I'm ok with that.

Despite the 2 big losses. That was one year I agree with the "if this then that" coach speak.

  • If Adibi didn't tear his biceps, maybe he covers Bush and prevents one of his TDs
  • Questionable offensive pass interferance call vs USC
  • missed field goal at NC State
  • Pace misses a 26 yarder in the Sugar Bowl

We were so close to two marquee wins, but I don't fault the team as they fought hard. And one thing I remember was that the Auburn fans were VERY humbled after the game. They were hoping (I daresay expecting) for a blowout in order to get AP votes, I don't think they expected things to be so close.

To beat the dead horse, 2010 would have been my favorite team if we beat Stanford.

We're definitely calling James Farrow "The Purifier" because he's from Minnetonka, MN.

If only the fullback would have caught that damn td pass that hit him right in the numbers....

farrow and malleck are easily in the top 10 in this class. malleck is the 2nd best offensive player and farrow is going to be a really good returner at worst.

"Do or do not, there is no try." (or something like that)

Will not be seen for a couple of years. In that time current talent will mature and more recruits will come in. If we can take 3/4 star or less guys and turn them into NFL draftees imagine what could we do with 5 star talent on the same development curve? Problem is that I think 5 star talent is coming in near their top potential. They play right away and could have character issues due to less maturity. But if you have enough of them you can bully almost everyone. If you have a great bunch of coaches no one will stop you. We have some weaknesses in our coaching abilities when it comes to game day execution against other top coaching talent. I think we match up pretty well with other on field talent. We have good conditioning and strength. We are just a little short of top 5.

No more excuses. Let's just go out and win!

When we held Auburn to 16. Good effort but just shy of a a major win.

The LSU game was an away trip of a home-and-home. They played at Lane in 2003 as defending SEC Champions and we dominated them. (This was before the SEC was getting slurped nationally.) In 2004 we were invited to play in DC against USC so Weaver bumped the at LSU game to 2007.

As far as game played in DC, I'm fine with that because we will always have the home field advantage. Most SEC teams will always outdraw us in Atlanta because they are closer. Although, I would say the Alabama game was 60/40 pro-Bama.

2004 3Aub 16 Vt 14 Lack of offense, we scored 1 td late on a blown coverage

We definitely were offensively challenged in the Sugar Bowl, but some people thought Auburn was the best team and the country and we hung with them. The one thing I will always remember about that game is that we should have taken the points and kicked field goals on 4th down in the red zone instead of going for it.

You are right though, more times than not when we lose the offense stinks up the joint. Since 2004 the only time we scored more than 30 points in a loss was against Boise last season. We have lost 21 games since then. Twelve times we scored 20 or less points! I do think the offense is getting better. In order for it to continue to do so we need the offensive line to step up big time this season.

Can we schedule some of these damn top 5 teams at home for a change? Jeez i mean i really think we could at least schedule one at home, instead of trying to go to everywhere in the damn country to play them. Im not saying dont play them on the road but if we could get that one win at home over a top 5 then that would give us huge momentum and it would carry out on the road against them. Now i know bowls are a different story, but the LSU game? cant we at least do a damn home and home with these teams?

I just read the article from Kyle Tucker and it looks like the coaches have read our complaints on here about recruiting, now if they could just listen to us about fucking douchesprings offense! I think both of the DBs, Manning and Josh Hosley will be 5 stars by the time NSD comes around and then Heather Dinich can say we have a top 20 class maybe even higher pending on how we do next season. She still wont pick us to win anything though. But I really think this is a step in the right direction, Coach Gray brought these two in, and he has a great pitch because his secondary is always one of the best in the nation. So this tells me something, aka get the damn offense going and we can land some 5 star freaking recruits on that side of the ball!!! Do you hear me Stiney?????
