I got totally whored in the bowl games... from 40-28 in the regular season
The Hokies come in riding a six game winning streak which includes a 12 point win over Florida St. Prior to that it was 4-4 start and three game losing streak with losses to UNLV, Purdue and Virginia. Needless to say the Hokies have been more of an up and down team than was expected from the preseason pick for #2 in the ACC. Much of that has to do with injuries which have left the Hokies with only eight scholarship players available. One of those injuries was to senior guard Dorenzo Hudson who was the Hokies’ third leading scorer. The loss of an experience guard and his offensive production was a huge blow. It also leaves VT riding a handful of players for a ton of minutes. There is still plenty of danger to deal with in the person of Malcolm Delaney. Delaney is looking like a first team All-ACC pick at 18.6 ppg, 4.0 apg and shooting 42% from three. He will be a handful for Larry Drew and/or Dexter Strickland to cover. UNC’s perceived penchant for giving up big games to guards means we all expect Delaney to go nuts for like 30 points. Which is not necessarily bad if UNC keeps the rest of the team in check. VT’s other major offensive option is forward Jeff Allen averaging 13.4 ppg and 9.8 rpg giving the Hokies some semblance of offensive balance. Other VT players to note are forward Victor Davila and Terrell Bell. The latter is shooting 37% from three which makes Bell this game’s candidate for player who will shoot out of his freaking mind versus UNC.

A win over Carolina would be huge for this team. UNC has height and Zeller can abuse Allen/Davila if they play timidly. The bigs have to play with passion, but not so much that they get into foul trouble. I have a feeling Delaney goes off tonight, but have no evidence to support it.
A win here puts us at 2-1 in conference with last place Wake coming to town on Saturday. This is big for momentum's sake.
To me this just feels like one of those games that we can win if we stay out of foul trouble. If Allen sits our lack of depth is going to get exploited by UNC and we're going to get run back to Blacksburg. UNC is a bit overrated, but they're still a name brand victory.
I agree here with the comment on Marcus Davis. I think he needs to for Logan's sake and will develop into that receiver for the Hokies. He has the big NFL type body and can be a go to man for Logan Thomas. This can help young quarterbacks tremendously with their confidence.
In the Stinefense is there a difference between the "catching" tight end and the "blocking" tight end? Andre Smith caught 20 balls last season and Boone caught a whopping 7 in '09. TIC of course, but we underutilize the tight end enough as it is so at this point there isn't much of a difference to me. We need to run more out of the two tight sets this season, because it's effective and Lanier needs to be moved to tight end because he can't play tackle. I think Marcus Davis is going to have to grow into that go to guy in the end and red zone because he's got the big body.
move to TE if drager doesn't ... as the blocking TE.
massive potential at DL. he's a solid plugger who probably won't be as good as martin was for tech at DE.
he's the best TE on the team right now, unless the freshman from NY is a beast.
about College Football is that every year is a new team with new hope. Let's wish our guys heading for the NFL good luck. In his statement about entering the draft RMFW stated he was thankful for his time at VT and the opportunity to play for us (the fans). He also stated he will always be a Hokie. I thought that was pretty decent of him. We need to remember that there are many individuals, players and coaches, giving it their all to keep us entertained and holding on to hope of a National Championship. Keep supporting them and spreading the word. We are building good Karma that will reward us when the time is right.
Congrats for everyone else. It was fun doing this all season. I wasn't sure I could end up at the top since bowl season can be unpredictable. My analogy is that it is never over. Never quit and don't give up on the Hokies!
Corey Moore wasn't a DT. VT has had some great DEs in the past like Bruce Smith, John Engelberger, Moore, and Darryl Tapp. When it comes to defensive tackles not so much though.
I've heard the same about Drager and I don't like it either for the reasons the Box mentioned. What makes the most sense, yet will never happen is moving Lanier from tackle outside to tight end and growing with Becton. In terms of depth behind him at the tackle position we have both Laurence Gibson and Mark Shuman who are big time recruits that can hopefully contribute a little sooner than in Newsome's "third year."
As far as defensive end is concerned I like what Gayle and Collins did when they got snaps and I think they'll be alright, but it would be nice to start getting Zack McCray PT so when he leaves early for the draft we all aren't wondering why we wasted his talent.
Corey Moore was dominant
I've heard lots of talk about moving Drager back to TE. Just don't see the point. Kid has a huge motor and massive potential on the DL. Why move him to a position we almost exclusively use for blocking?
As wrestling is a sport growing in popularity, it is still not the most popular sport. I know the Big Ten network broadcasts their schools' matches, but I have never watched Virginia Tech, specifically, on television. The ESPN family of networks has broadcast NCAAs the past four or five years, so look for the Championships on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3.com, and ESPNU. It is ashame that the Hokies cannot get more national exposure via television, but I feel with the growing popularity of wrestling, that this day may be in the near future.
Also check out the front page of HokieSports.com. The Hokies wrestling programs headlines the homepage. That is awesome for the Hokies wrestling program and for the sport of wrestling in general.
Can we watch these guys on TV at all?
Will be the first time...the highest a DT from VT has been drafted is the 3rd round (Tom Beasley in 1977 - 60th overall and J.C. Price - 88th overall).
Really tempted to making an analogy between my failing in crunch time and our offense's, but I won't.
BCO, box, and jmichons congratulations and at least it wasn't VTColtTXRangers haha.
I want Stanford's offense. You eluded to it a little bit, but until we get a dominate offensive and defensive line we'll never be able to consistently hang with the elite teams because that's the biggest gap of separation.
Last thought: When was the last time VT has had a stud DT similar to Nick Fairley, Terrance Cody, or Glen Dorsey?
Fingers crossed that's what Nick Acree will turn into over the next couple of seasons.
Philly huh, I may try to make it up to the NCAAs.
The one thing I know about wrestling is that Dan Gable is the man, I'm glad we have someone from his tree leading us.
The ACC Championships are on March 5th in Charlottesville and NCAAs will be held March 17th-19th in Philly. Tech is easily the favorite to win ACCs and is a longshot to win the NCAAs. Wrestling is a weird sport though and if there are some early upsets to Cornell's wrestlers we will have a shot at a National Championship.
A little back ground on Coach Dresser, he was a longtime high school wrestling coach in Virginia and amassed 13 state titles at two separate schools after leaving his graduate assistant coaching position under wrestling great Dan Gable at Iowa. Coach Dresser had Christiansburg High School, the team he left to come coach at Virginia Tech, ranked as high as fourth in the country, and if you do not know this is unheard of for a public school. He has rebuilt the Hokies from almost nothing to a national contender in just five years.
My personal prediction when Dresser took the job as the Hokies head coach was that it would take him ten years to get a national title for Virginia Tech's wrestling program. It may be a bit of a stretch this year, but we definitely have a shot and he is doing it in half of the time I thought he would. I was good friends with a wrestler from Dresser's former high school, Christiansburg, he said that Dresser is not only a good coach, but a great recruiter and that he could sell salt to a slug. So, moral of the story, he gets the top talent and the coaches them into Champions.
Bud stays for now. After the NC game I firmly believe defense wins championships. Bud needs to get back in the groove for the biggest games. To be at the elite level we need to hold top ten teams under 20 points.
I was oblivious to everything that happened regarding coach Brands going to Iowa and stealing our recruits. It seems like we've rebounded nicely. When do the NCAA's for wrestling take place?
Thanks for the work, feel free to keep them coming.
I know LT is uber talented, but based on how long it's taken the staff to develop other quarterbacks I'm not expecting much in year one. I really hope Nick Acree takes a big step this spring and summer and gets his fundamentals down. With his size he can be a difference maker on the defensive line. Also, Painter, if he's not going to play on offense can we just move him to d-line and be done with it. How long are we going to let him idle for?

reg season champ is you
bowl champ is me
jmich overall.
at least you got that going for you.
