i remember sitting on the wooden seats in lane stadium when i was younger, and loving every minute
I'm pretty sure that subdivision of the AD neighborhood is where I live too, with aspirations to move up into the exclusive Realist gated community one of these days. (Not a Leach guy, though -- I want him in a HC slot somewhere else where I can enjoy watching the carnage and not be too upset when it all ends in tears.)
Biggest non-expansion shocker in my 25 or so years of following the ACC has been UNC fans going from a watered-down version of the MVictors Corduroy Jacket clan (at least where football was concerned) to all-out Marlo and Omar.
I'd love to see us in the SEC. Therefore, I take on the SEC attitude: call me Omar.
It's a subset of the AD category. Congratulations! You want to be more like Jim Weaver.
"disaffected bloggers" category?
I am some crazy mix of NCAA Football 11 Guru, Realist, Optimist, The Giving Tree and But We're Still going to TOTs later, right?
Most of the time the optimist shines through, but it usually depends on the circumstance and if I'm currently watching a game or not.
If you can stay out of foul trouble the entire first half, we'll win this game.
Love,
Joe
But if they could kill the lights, that would set it off for sure.
Any of the running backs we're going after big name guys? Is Grooms making an official visit this weekend too?
I know he committed to Miami over the weekend, but VT is apparently still pursuing him hard. He's a little small for running back but could grow into the role with a redshirt and some strength/conditioning time. I know there was some off-the-field character stuff that took him off some school's radars (he may have even had offers taken back). We are apparently still going hard after some additional running backs, now that we can sell immediate playing time.
All that matters is landing Anthony...really hoping that he commits over the weekend
That makes much more sense now, very interesting. I like that the team comes out through smoke, it's so "SEC recruiting". I am going to do my damnedest to try to see them wrestle this year.
Wrestling is a different sport and there are two main ways that teams compete. There are head to head dual meets, like the National Duals tournament (Hokies took 2nd) and the Clarion match, and then there are tournaments where wrestlers compete for their teams individually and they are seeded in a bracket and they just wrestle whoever is put in front of them. The Hokies are definitely a solid dual meet team, rankings on ESPN now put us at #3. But, another website, intermatwrestle.com, puts the Hokies all the way down at #16 as a tournament team. Meaning this is their ranking in tournaments like the ACC tournament and the NCAA Championships. As you advance rounds by winning individually in these tournaments, you score points, the further you get in the tournament, the more each match is worth. To keep it simple, i'll use this example, if you win your first match your team gets 1 point, second match your team gets 2 points, third 3 points etc. Basically this means that InterMat Wrestle thinks many of our wrestlers will get beat in early rounds and drop to the consolation (loser's) bracket, where point values diminish per match. So as a dual meet team, YES, we are silly good, as a tournament team, that is yet to be seen, the first time the Hokies see a tournament style competition will be ACC's.
As for pictures for the match, I didn't take any; I would be terrible at that. But hokiesports.com has them at http://www.hokiesports.com/wrestling/gallery/ .
As for Spellman, there is no word on him being injured, so I don't think that is the case. But, I did find out before the match that Clarion did not bring a few of their top wrestlers. Maybe, one of these was their 184-pounder, and Coach Dresser decided to get John Dickson some mat-time. While this is not usually an issue at the collegiate level, he could have also had issues making weight. So short answer, no, I have no idea why he didn't answer. But, I do have theories.
As far as the ACC, traditionally we are fairly strong, but not elite. I thought the Hokies had a chance of winning them last year, but fell short. This year, the Hokies are the only ACC team ranked in the dual meet top 25. They are also the highest ranked tournament team, with the next two being NC State and UVA. So, I would say this is an off year for the ACC, but as the ACC's is an individual tournament style competition, anything can happen. I still look for Coach Dresser to get his first championship this year.
So what you're saying is we're silly good? Are there any pictures from the meet available? Any idea why Spellman was out? Is the ACC a strong wrestling conference? Apologies in advance for the 20 questions.

doh. i forgot to add bowl week 2's numbers, moving him quite a few down. still reg season champ.
I don't know much about wrestling but I do enjoy the talk about it. I never wrestled except in my college days with one of my roommates that wrestled at Robinson High. I think I finished my time at Va Tech with a 0-83 record. I am awful at it. I do know Clarion is good. After college I lived back home in Pittsburgh for a while. My roommate went to Clarion and told me many stories about their wrestling matches and rivalry with Edinboro. I hope Tech keeps winning and Miller keeps getting more and more mean. Our Oline could use some just-less-than-Nick-Fairley meanness.
He promised not to show up.
Auburn said he wasn't going to show up.
He showed up anyways.
MagDuffs promised roundhouse Bruce Lee/Chaz Norris type drop kick on the ref for that Helen Keller like call. Was Cecil Newton in attendance last night?
fucker.. such a huge call and he totally botched it
Look at the ref in front of the Tech bench...he signals block. Unbelievable.

You make the call.
Just going through Dresser's daily practices is enough to toughen up anybody. As a freshman in high school, my wrestling team went to practice with Christiansburg one day and that was quite possiblly the toughest physical test I have ever put on my body. Dresser demands 100% in his practice room, so I think Miller's toughness will be evident in every game, believe that.
"I had 12 frat guys who thought they were wrestlers five years ago," said Dresser, previously the head coach at Christiansburg High School.

At what point do we ask Dresser to toughen up the offensive line? I can't wait for Miller to play.
Wow. He can be an amazing force, or he can simply disappear and not even count on the floor. The "charge" dunk was one of the most assertive plays (and bad ass to see from him) in his four years.
How many of his 35 double doubles have included fouls?
Although its fun to live in dbase/spreadsheet land. I am sure I'll be inspired by the end of March.

and I will probably fall into any of these categories except leech, old people, the game, and acc babies.
