What Logan Thomas is capable of

When Virginia Tech celebrates after it's participation in national #BEATBAMA day Saturday it'll be because of it's ultra-talented Quarterback, Logan Thomas. Thomas is the most physically gifted QB I've seen since Cam Newton, and I believe that if it weren't for some poor coaching and scheming Thomas would be a national Heisman candidate this year.

He is capable of taking over a game both through the air and on the ground. He's a very powerful runner, the type of runner that DC's hate game-planning against. Even when you have the right guy in the right place, Thomas can run him over and pick up 5 yards in a hurry. Have a guy in the wrong place at the wrong time? Thomas is capable of housing it.

Thomas also has great arm strength and throws it very well deep. His arm strength allows him to fit the ball into those windows 15-25 yards down the field in between linebackers and safeties, something only the most elite QBs are capable of. Corners who play with large cushions are punished regularly by Logan. Thomas does a great job at zipping the ball into a WR running a curl or outroute against a soft corner.

He does have his flaws, as I've addressed in the past. Thomas does very well with recognizing coverages PRE-snap. Remember how dominate Thomas seemed during the 2 minute drill his entire sophomore year? Going hurry up forces defenses to "tip their hand" in coverage, allowing Thomas to diagnose exactly who will be open before the snap. Stinespring wanted to highlight this skill set by incorporating more hurry up last offseason... then immediately handicapped Logan by making him run an awful pistol offense. Logan really struggled last year at seeing what's going on post-snap in the secondary though. Remember his first pick-six in the spring game? He either failed to recognize when the defender jumped the route or, rather then moving on to progession number two, Thomas decided to stick with his initial read and tried to gun it into the tight hole.

Thomas has showed that he's capable of being a great college quarterback. He's had a game where he was able of succeeding in all three aspects of QB play (short throws, long throws, run game). Miami 2011.

If Thomas can have another game like this vs Bama, I like Tech's chances. A lot.
