I am so excited about these new guys. I know many have questions but I am excited.
New Coaches Salaries vs outgoing coaches salaries
Virginia Tech football’s offensive makeover wasn’t nearly as expensive as market rates suggested. New assistant coaches Scot Loeffler, Jeff Grimes and Aaron Moorehead won’t be filing 1040EZ forms with the IRS, but thanks to Auburn, the Hokies saved more than $400,000.
As Tech’s offensive coordinator, Loeffler’s base salary will be $400,000. Grimes, the line coach, will earn $265,000, while Moorehead, the receivers coach and least-experienced of the trio, will make $150,000.
But Loeffler and Grimes worked this past season at Auburn, which fired head coach Gene Chizik and his staff following a 3-9 finish. Loeffler and Grimes have time remaining on their Auburn contract, Loeffler through June 2014, Grimes through June of this year.
According to USA Today’s database, Loeffler’s base salary at Auburn was $525,000, Grimes’ $407,050.
Until the Auburn contracts expire, Tech will pay Loeffler and Grimes the equivalent of $150,000 annually. Paying Loeffler at that rate instead of at a $400,000-per-year rate, for essentially 18 months, saves Tech approximately $375,000.
The savings with Grimes will be about $55,000.
Moorehead worked three seasons at Stanford, a private school that does not release coaches’ salaries. Since he resigned his position to come to Tech, he’s due no money from the Cardinal.
Moorehead and Grimes will receive $50,000 retention bonuses if they remain at Tech until Jan. 1, 2015.
Former offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring, who’s remaining on staff as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, is taking a 17-percent pay cut from 2012. His base goes from $362,230 to $300,000.
Stinespring has been on staff 20 years, the last 11 as offensive coordinator, and head coach Frank Beamer clearly wanted him to remain, despite the demotion. Indeed, Beamer spent part of Friday’s news conference reading a list of Stinespring’s numerous recruiting successes.
The three assistants who departed Beamer’s staff -- Mike O’Cain, Kevin Sherman and Curt Newsome -- made a combined $683,919 in base salary last season, according to USA Today. The combined bases for Loeffler, Grimes and Moorehead are $815,000.
Once it kicks in, Loeffler’s $400,000 salary at Tech will be mid-range by current ACC standards. But there was no chance the Hokies would pay him more than renowned defensive coordinator Bud Foster, who last season made $502,762.
From USA Today’s database, here are the 2012 base salaries for offensive coordinators at the ACC’s other public schools:
North Carolina’s Blake Anderson: $250,000.
North Carolina State’s Dana Bible: $334,392.
Florida State’s James Coley: $351,650. Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher calls the plays, and earlier this week Coley left FSU, his alma mater, to become Miami’s offensive coordinator. Since Miami is a private school, no word on Coley’s pay there.
Virginia’s Bill Lazor: $458,350
Maryland’s Mike Locksley: $507,440.
Clemson’s Chad Morris: $1,306,500.
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson doesn’t have an offensive coordinator and calls the Yellow Jackets’ plays. Quarterbacks coach Brian Bohannon was his highest-paid offensive assistant in 2012 at $212,500.
For total assistants’ pay in 2012, Tech ranked third among ACC public schools at $2,411,046, behind Florida State’s $3,042,050 and Clemson’s $4,181,750. Virginia was sixth at $2,166,138, but the Cavaliers upped the ante considerably with recent hirings of associate head coach for offense Tom O’Brien and defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta.
tl;ra
A few interesting tidbits in there. One in particular is that Loeffler and Grimes are still on Auburn's payroll for another 18 months, and we're giving them a reduced salary until their Auburn contracts expire, which I find a bit odd.
Am I the only one that didn't know Miami was a private school?
Probably not
It is amazing, the tuition is about $40K per year at U of M and COA is close to $60K living on campus! (undergrad)
Jeff Grimes
"My number one focus is on developing the toughest offensive line in the ACC".
Footer
I propose that the TKP have that quote in the footer immediately. That was 100% gold.
I knew there was a reason I tuned into this thing
Antone Exum is my new favorite person.
"Exum from the #LunchPailDefense." classy guy
Spring game
Hopefully this is actually a spring game this year so we can see who outworks who.
yep
Last year was lame with the weather. I am excited to see these guys work.
Some tidbits
FINGERS CROSSED...
Conclusion: Loeffler seems no
Conclusion:
Loeffler seems no non-sense and is ready to produce a good offense after a gloomy year at Auburn.
Grimes made me need new pants.
Moorehead brings a certain young culture into the program and knows a thing or two about the position, including blocking.
I love Exum.
#BEATALABAMA.
Exum is awesome
Exum stole the show and set up for a very exciting spring....i can't wait for the Spring game
Missed it...
Is there any place I could catch it after the fact?

The new coaches are tall.
Also, thin Frank Beamer is short.
He did mention that he looked for height
when hiring new assistants.
Another highlight of the presser.
Antone Exum
You're hilarious and very classy.
Awesome guy :)
Representin the 804 in style
Haven't watched the presser yet
But "Grimes made me need new pants" makes me excited to see it.

My thoughts on the new Offensive Line Coach
#BEATBAMA is in full swing.
#Beatbama CANT WAIT
Is it too early to watch enter sandman videos?
No.
It's never too early for Enter Sandman.
I love you Antoine Exum
So much hope for next season
Exum stole the show
I'm thinking the addition of Grimes is the key to our success, but I really enjoyed the exchange at the end with Exum and Moorehead. I think his energy will be a great influence on our receivers. I can see him sort of being the Cornell Brown of the offense - a guy with intensity, but great energy and humor. Maybe we'll even get the offensive equivalent of "No Tweedy, it's whip!" I could just picture him getting on one of our guys about blocking downfield or running a route, but then making sure all the guys know they're friends afterwards. I think our whole team will benefit from some youth and new energy.
Cornell Brown
I'm fine with him being like Cornell Brown in some ways but hopefully he isn't also #instagrameverything
Ok, watching the video
and as a former offensive lineman, I think I have a man-crush on Grimes. I can't wait to see how our guys respond to this guy. Frank may have found the offensive version of Bud.
OOH!....I like Moorehead! "The recievers on this team are going to out-work everyone on this team. You guys better be ready to bring it!" Nice response! Too bad Marcus Davis isn't going to be around for spring practice. He'd either bump his draft status with another year or ride the pine.
I'm excited. All of these guys seem so confident in their approach and how successful Virginia Tech will be with them at the controls.
Loeffler: "I'm not dwelling on mistakes, I'm at Virginia Tech now and my goal is to help this team win football games." I like that he's looking ahead and not behind. Often that's what you need to do to get better.
Grimes: "I want to build the toughest offensive line in the ACC." YES PLEASE! Hopefully the toughest for his entire tenure as OL Coach (and hopefully that's many many years)
Moorehead: "I've watched film of the secondary and you'll see by the end of spring that our young receivers are going to be the hardest working players on the team." Nice comeback to Exum's hilarious interjection in the PC. I like his style, I like his attitude, and I believe his words even though he was in the midst of joshing with Mr. Swag.
I LOVE THE STAFF. LET'S FREAKIN GO HOKIES! CAN'T WAIT FOR SPRING BALL.
#BEATBAMA #EATBAMA #EXCRETEBAMA
#TeamGoatee
Grimes and Foster sporting goatee.
Morehead and Gray gonna motivate their charges.
Loeffler and Thomas together? Ooooh, I get the chills.
BEAT MOTHAFUCKA ALABAMA AND TAKE BACK THE ACC DOT COM.
Recruiting
Sorry for double posting, but I was at Andy Bitter's blog and came across this gem:
"Although Beamer said they’d talk about recruiting locations later for the new staff, Stinespring said Grimes will handle Western Pennsylvania, Stinespring and Cornell Brown will be in the 757. Loeffler will recruit quarterbacks and Grimes offensive linemen anywhere, though."
Exum is the man. And that's a perfect response from Moorhead. I hope that he gets those receivers to really make it a battle every day in practice, good competition in practice can only help.

exum
he may now be one of my favorite hokies all time
He's in my top 5
Marcus Davis is lucky.
You don't F*#K With Chuck!
Disclaimer: TKP is solely responsible for my getting into meme generation!
Alright folks, enjoy the weekend!
Is it just me, or in this pic doesn't...
Loeffler remind you of Donald Trump, Grimes of Toby Keith, and for some reason, Morehead of Barney Fife (Don Knotts), LOL! Grimes looks like he belongs as an actor in a Western....maybe the new lead on the TV show Justified! Please redo the photo with the new header,"Men, we're gonna stampede these Gobblers right through 'em and cross that goal line!"
Beamer has been very classy throughout this whole ordeal...apparently much more calculated and thorough than many suspected as well....how could you want anyone else running our program? major kudos, Frank!
I'm so excited, I feel like a Pointer sista!
I also lost my meme virginity to TKP, LOL!
Actually...
Moorehead is vintage Charlie Pride in that pic. There's a new posse in town, and Bud's defense will begin to get real reps in spring starting this year. I don't want to jump the gun, but considering the recent recruiting classes and the attitude we're seeing from these coaches, the temporary disappearance of the 'burg from the college football conversation might be a distant memory in the not-so-distant future.
#BEATBAMA
For me, the highlight was Coach Moorehead's response to Exum's challenge. A huge indicator about how well this project will work in year one will be the compete level of the offense against the defense in spring practice, scrimmages, and the spring game. Defense has always dominated the spring practices, and the offensive coaching staff has always hemmed and hawed and focused on learning rather than competing. Compete level is the first thing that has to be fixed. 3 and outs are not ok. Interceptions are not ok. Missing a block and then turning around and watching are not ok. This offense needs a major uptick in compete level, and Moorehead showed that his group will not be pushed around like the bunch last year.
For those who don't want the video, here is a summary.
Late to the game here...
Had class at noon. :(
Anyway, Tone is THE MAN. That was perfect. I definitely think his attitude and leadership will make a HUGE difference for this team next year. Such a positive and fun guy. Love it.
And I cannot be more pleased with these hires. They sound like great men and solid coaches who know exactly what we need. They'll fit right into the Beamer coaching philosophy. I can't wait to see these coaches and our team be successful.
I'm so excited for the spring game now. Maybe this year we won't get rained out...
#BEATBAMA is on!!
I'm jazzed
About spring camp now!! Spring game...#apr20!
Exum is the man!
Exum was hilarious on that one!
I think our players will respond very well to the New Trio, Im so stoked for the spring. And it better be 60 degrees with sunny conditions this time around.
BEAT MOUFUCKIN BAMA!
Anyone else getting "this video is private" when trying to play? What am I missing?
For anyone who had trouble viewing the video, it seems like HokieSports disabled the original one and uploaded a new one that has the audio synced up. You should be able to play it now.
whenever the video/audio is not synced up, I can never watch the video itself. So I just listened to the press conf. Now I'm going to watch it and get all excited about Hokie football once again!
Spring ball needs to come asap! Looking forward to watching clips of them coaching our offense up to #BEATBAMA
More thoughts
It seem that Loeffler and Grimes have a strong chemistry, which is going to be critical to the success of the program. I think that Shane is also completely on board with the new hires. I think Stinespring will be fine. There was no indication of animosity with the new hires, especially with Loeffler taking over the play calling from Stinespring. The chemistry of the new hires seem to be very obvious. The jostling with Exum and Morehead was pure gold, but that seem to show the respect that even Exum have for Morehead.
I also think with Beamer basically giving the keys to Loeffler to run the offense, it would appear to me Beamer is taking the hands-off approach with the offense, which is great! That is one reason why Clemson is so successful, Swinney took the CEO role in coaching Clemson, entrusting the offense to Chad Morris, and the defense to Brent Veneables.
I have to give major props to Beamer for admitting that changes wasn't easy for him, but at the same time, he sounded up-beat about the changes. I think that is going to become contagious this spring.
I can't freaking wait for the spring ball!
I'm particularly interested in seeing what Moorehead does
I wonder how he'll develop Joel Caleb? Will he be able mold more receivers into blocking machines? How will he utilize Knowles' blazing speed? What depth will Stanford and Asante provide?
Watched it a few more times...
“to talk about what happened at Auburn, would be unfair to the people at Auburn” –Scot
“you deal in what’s real… circumstances sometimes, the players you got. You gotta take in what’s real” –Beamer ..
aka "Auburn was a fucking mess"
Number 7
Good luck, you'll be plastered halfway through
It was reported that Saban wanted to pick up Scot at some point in the past.
that's reassuring to say the least
Could Grimes be some step son of Bud Foster?
I am unwilling
to completely rule out the possibility that Bud Foster impregnated someone at age 9. But I will say that I think it's unlikely.
Haha. To the spirit of your point: they certainly do seem to be built of similar stuff. And assuming we're right about that, I will just say... YESSSSSSSS!!!!
#BEATBAMA
Hopefully
Some rouge DNA research lab saw something in a young Bud Foster and said "We need to use that child as a subject in our cloning experiments!" and thus we end up with Grimes.
Seriously, the more I read and hear, the more I think Frank found the Bud Foster of offense. If he can walk the walk as well as he talks the talk, this may be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
If anyone could impregnate someone at age 9 it would be Bud Foster...
As despicable as that sounds...
You're probably right.
