New thread for a new year.
I'd like to open this year with a question.

Can you guys mention the various beers you've had with an ABV above 15%?
I'm trying to figure out which breweries currently, and in the past, produced a beer consistently with this ABV level.

Anybody have ideas for a lot 18 beer label, start posting them here. We are considering doing a contest of some sort, if anybody wants to take on a project to run it.

I keep forgetting to get the dimensions for the label but, it's the same for any 12oz bottle beer.

No single style of beer, think a rotating style of beer so we can keep it fresh, bottling a beer in August before game one then having the last case after our NCG in January wouldn't be optimum as well as guessing how many cases to produce for the season just wouldn't be optimal.

Aslin just released their Black Friday Stout lineup - 7 different stouts, all at 16.5%. Coco Mostra is getting ready to drop, and it is 16.5%

Pretty sure The Bruery has several beers that are over 15%- Black Tuesday and Chocolate Rain come to mind, but I think there are more.

Yea, I drove by the location last week - they have made zero progress on the space - this was after Brandon at Aslin told me they had the design approved and build-out would begin.

Opened for friends & family yesterday and today, supposedly grand opening on July 15.

I've not had a lot of luck with higher content beers. Most of them come off overly boozy without the flavor to carry it.
Bourbon County Stout by Goose Island was pretty decent. It's right at 15%. I can't say I've had any others that were worth remembering at that level.
I keep giving Barleywines a chance, and I keep getting disappointment. It's just a variety I can't get into.
Sliding in below your threshold are
Palo Santo Marron by Dogfish Head. At 12%, it was fairly decent.
Love You With My Stout by Evil Twin wasn't bad either. It's 12%.

I think 9%-12% is really the sweet spot. Above 12% the number of drinkable beer compare to the swill is just not a good ratio.

Only one I've had that comes to mind immediately is Dogfish 120 Minute.

Ohh, didn't know they had a cranked up version of R'aison D'Etre. If it's good I will have to seek some out.

What a savings

Haven't had the Extra in a few years. IIRC it wasn't quite as tasty as Etre, but the jacked up ABV makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, so there's that.

Dogfish Head also has their Olde School Barleywine at 15%

Oak-Aged Vanilla World Wide stout is a 17.5%

But will this be good for VT and the ACC?

D9 Brewing has a "Defying Gravity" series where they're exploring high ABV Sours. Only one I've seen from the series so far is Cape Canaveral which is 14%.

Apparently I have never logged a beer higher than 13.3% into Untappd (Weyerbacher Insanity). Now I must find one so I can actually contribute something useful to this thread. Damn you Egbert!

Tactical Nuclear Penguin by BrewDog. Drank half of it, left it opened in the fridge for 6 months, and the second half tasted about the same.

Had yall's Theory of Chaos the first year yall did it (~17%?) and it was surprisingly good (not a knock on you, I just typically don't like the super high alcohol beers).

Had 120minute in 2016. Most money I've ever spent on one beer and top two worst beers I've ever drank. 60 and 90 are pretty amazing...120 is too much for me.

I know people tell me I'm nuts all the time, but the OG 120, say 15 years ago, was an amazing representation of a hoppy IPA. Lately it's gotten sloppy and messy in its presentation and flavor. Not sure what they changed (prob just batch size) but it is NOT what it used to be.

I'll have a taste of 120 if on draft or someone opens theirs, but it's really a hoppy liquor. let it age 7+ yrs then drink.

First year was 13.5.
Past three were 18%.

Boss wants me to do a 15% ABV IPA.

Looks like early spring for that. Going to do a completely different method to keep it from being boozy and hot. Lots of late hops to bring out the fruit hops type thing.

I still need to get up there and try some of the stuff on tap. The 15% IPA isn't my speed, but I think you've mentioned some variations of squatch in the past.

I'm kind of hoping to get my band in up there, and have an even better excuse.

almost always split any stout over 14% or IPA over 10%. super tricky because each can be so big and boozy.

Avery's Uncle Jacob's Stout is a bourbon barrel support that floats around 15% depending on the year they make it.
Pretty sure Avery has a couple other very high ABV beers.
EDIT: here are a couple others by Avery.

Plank'd (rum barrel aged coconut Porter)

Unrelated to the question at hand, but anybody tried Casita Cerveceria out of NC? They are my new favorite brewery and it's not even close. Former Duck Rabbit head brewer, still brews out of DR and makes a bunch of IPAs, pale ales, and a few darker ones as well.

Why so high?

I agree with others who said that the taste seems to go away when the ABV gets above 12%.

I'm a big fan of Trappist-style beers.

I have this years Theory Of Chaos we just kegged yesterday. It's 18% this year. Changed some methods a bit and it's not as hot nor as sticky in the past. I like it this year.

I wanted to get some opinions on other beers and a general list to think about.

There are some beers on the list I have forgottten about.

Last Sunday when it was beautiful here in Richmond, the fiance and I went to Legend for the first time in a while and I had their Taproom Series Anniversary Imperial Brown Ale (8.3% ABV). I'm a huge fan of their flagship Brown Ale, so I had high expectations for this and was not disappointed. Really nice nose and super buttery, chocolaty finish that doesn't overwhelm you. Great for the winter if you're looking for a nice mid-week brew.

Aside from The Bruery, Dogfish Head, and Evil Twin I can't think of anyone who regularly brews at 15%+

Lickinghole Creek makes several beers (with multiple varietals) in the 12-14% range.

Honestly, don't think I've had a 15%er that I thought was any good. I agree with others in that 10-12% is the sweet spot where a beer can still taste like a beer, but still pack a punch. Victory Golden Monkey is one around that range that I like.

Most beer that is that high ABV usually doesn't taste like the style it's trying to be. For example. Dogfish Head World Wide Stout taste more like a really thick port wine than a traditional stout.

Usually they all don't taste that good either cause your paying for just plain high alcohol That's just my experience though.

Want a good high ABV Beer. Try a Belgian Strong Dark Ale at around 10 to 12 percent. Amazing and still retain the style profile and amazing taste.

Especially beer trends are ridiculous.

I don't get the milk shake beers and stuff. Some people love them. We blend beers sometimes for the novelty but that's it. I use it to teach flavor development and how you can fool your tastebuds into thinking something else.

For instance we do a vanilla cream ale each year at the beginning of the summer and serve in pushed by nitrogen. People talk about how sweet it is. It's not. The sugar content in it is very small, it's dry. But the vanilla fools our sense of taste into thinking it is sweet.
We have a stout with cocoa in it. Quite a bit of cocoa. Mix the vanilla ale with the cocoa stout and people are fooled into thinking it's sweet like a glass of chocolate.

And yes, I know I started off talking about weird beer and mentioned a vanilla cream ale and a cocoa stout.

Beer trends are hilarious to me. The obsession with IPA is comical. When things get to the point that a beer that goes by the name Cascadian Dark Ale gets labeled Black IPA, things have just gone too far. I mean... the name includes the word pale. Pale black? I think not.

And sours... I love a good sour. But, most of the stuff being made is trash. It's a lactic acid bomb. Tastes like vomit. That's because everyone is doing berliners, which can be good, but I can't seem to find many. They are quick and easy for the brewery to turn out, and get their sour on the market. But they are nothing compared to a Flemish red or an oud Bruin. But... people buy the lousy sours like crazy, and the breweries keep pumping them out.

I've been building a solera Porter for about a year and a half now. It's going to be tasty, and a proper sour.

I'm starting a Flemish red next week. I finally have 2 wine barrels to use to age.
I'm going to rush it and see if it's ready in June.

This reminds me of how many people say they don't like Guinness because it's too heavy. Guinness actually has the lowest calorie count of any mass-market non-light beer but people are used to something roasty and dark being heavy so that's what they perceive.

Oh boy... I guess now the question is - how long will this canned beer stay good for? And where can I go buy enough to pop one at kickoff every game for the next decade or so?

For a pilsner, usually not much longer than 6-8 months. Some, maybe 12. It has to do with how much oxygen is purged from the can before filling and prevented from entering before capped.
Also, depends on how cold it has been kept since filling and when it is opened.

If you want to extend the life as long as possible, buy the cans the day they were delivered to the retailer and then store at 35F.

This was available in Blacksburg all football season actually, not even the brewery had it that early. Made for some good pre-game kill the beers.

Panning a short trip to Charlotte to check out the local breweries. Focusing on Uptown/NoDa area because there are so many. Will probably limit it to 3-5 depending on how much we enjoy each. Looking for tips on which to hit. Want at least one where I can bring home bottles or cans which I can't easily find elsewhere for swapping. At least one to just hang out in for a bit. One with a restaurant would be nice ( not a food truck fan), and one for late night music. And of course which are your favorite two for what they brew, and why?

Sycamore gets POPPING during the summer, not sure how it'll be right now.

Wooden Robot is easily my favorite. Have some limited release sours in bottles for purchase and I've been impressed with each I've tried. They actually won gold in the barrel-aged sour category at the GABF this last year, but that sold out quickly.

Unknown is pretty close by and has a pretty cool atmosphere with their newly opened upstairs patio with clear sightlines of the city.

Sugar Creek has a plenty of belgian style ales as well.

Ok! Just had Dogfish Head Raison D'Extra. 18% Belgian Strong Dark Ale. Gotta say they did an amazing job making it taste more like beer than liquor. Recommend.

I will have to try that. Have always wanted to try the Raison D'extra but never found it locally. I'll bet that bottle is around $11 bucks with that ABV.

I will say that of all the styles I'm familiar with the Belgian style would lend itself to stronger alcohol content. My favoite BSDA is St Bernardus at around 11.5% ABV.

To your first point, a 5 oz glass at new river tap house in va beach was $6. Still thought it was worth it.

Deth's Tar by Revolution Brewing. Barrel aged imperial oatmeal stout. At 14.8%, it's a gnat's eyelash under what you're looking for, but it's as consistently good as everything else Revolution does.

Brewery closures in Roanoke Area.
Last December Flying Mouse officially closed.
Ober Brewing in Salem closed officially on 26 Jan.

I talked with a gentleman last week that assures me he is opening a brewery in Blacksburg. I don't have a good date I can pass on, there were still quite a few balls still in the air but he assures me it's this year and he will pass on the date and final name as soon as everything is approved.

Edit: I got the town wrong. The place I know is going into Christiansburg, not Blacksburg.

That's an interesting observation but I don't think that's it.

It's probably not a bad idea though. I haven't looked at the Mike's with an eye towards putting in a brewery. I actually haven't been downtown since Mike's closed, except driving through so, I didnt notice Mikes was closed.

Brings up an interesting question I've had for a little while now: are we experiencing a bubble bursting in the brewery section? Green Flash closed in Va Beach not too long ago and it caught just about everyone off guard. That location did some great business. The word I heard was that it was too difficult for the company to operate on both coasts, but I wonder if there's something more to it

GF was run poorly, financially, overextended.

New Realm took it's place and while i think the beer isn't as good, it's cooking almost every weekend there. NR is opening a restaurant too.

But yes, it's hyper-competitive right now.

I'll double down on what BCO says about Green Flash. They over extended and reportedly were making a profit but, they forgot its all about cash flow, not profits. Doesn't do any good if you make a profit but cant pay the bills.

At one time it was a "If you build it, they will come, sort of thing. Now you need good beer AND good business.
Still lots of room for growth in craft as 87% of beer sales go to Macro breweries but you just have to be smart about it. Some of these small guys have NO experience in business.

Some of them are just hitting that 5 year wall that makes or breaks many businesses.

Do you have any insight into Deschute's plans? I know they say they are still going to build in Roanoke, but I haven't heard when.

It seems like they (and Green Flash) are the size that is going to have the hardest time continuing to grow. The beer nerds who helped them get big now prefer to drink local and fresh. That being said, Stone recently announced plans to expand the brewery in Richmond a bit because east coast sales are going to well... so who knows

Deschutes is still planning on building in Roanoke on that property. They completed the purchase for the land.

Their rate of growth slowed considerably so they don't have any dates yet except that they still have plans to build and expend. the did cut down on the size of the building they plan to build but are changing the architecture to make it more modular.

They want to continue export growth into Europe and the place in OR does not have sufficient capacity and cross country transport for the beer is more expensive than cross ocean.

Thanks for the info! I'm looking forward to them opening. Fresh Squeezed is my go-to IPA from the bigger craft breweries, and everything I've had from them has been really solid.

As far as I know their tap room in downtown Roanoke is still going strong.

I think it's less that a bubble is bursting and more that the easy money has been scooped up and there's some healthy competition. For a while there every single brewery opening got a ton of local press and hype, and people flocked to them regardless of quality. Now you better have at least good beer with a great location or vice versa or people aren't going to bother.

Can throw Sunken City in that category as well I suppose. From an outsiders perspective, that place had seemed to have huge potential at one point. Any insider info?

The owner at Sunken City didn't really know the brewing business, sees the investment more as a real estate deal and wouldn't let his experts run the business.
It is still open but basically just does small batches to serve on holidays.
His plan is to put in a smaller brew system and complete the kitchen to put in a brewpub. I do not know the progress made on those plans.

We (me and my friends) never could understand why they got rid of Steamboat and Dam. But as soon as they stopped distributing the writing was on the wall in a massive way.

The Veil's Hornswoggler Stout is easily the best stout I have ever had.

Definitely, I recently had the oreo release and did not taste that good in my opinion. The Russian chocolate milk release is so smooth and light compared to a Guinness.

If you are ever near Chesapeake you have to stop in to Big Ugly Brewing. Good beers and even better people. I like their Ape Hanger stout the best but the Almond Joy porter ain't bad either!

Don't knock it till you try it. I've had some crazy beers made to taste like peanutbutter and such. If the style profile will allow it, and the brewers know what they are doing it can be a great beer. An IPA is a great style to try to get this fruity wackiness.....

i read an article about how it's made. Not sure about the marshmallows, but by the looks of the hop profile the brewers might be onto something.

Commonwealth Brewing in VA Beach brewed a DIPA with marshmallow awhile back and it was great.

The milkshake style beers are fantastic.
And this too sounds like it would be tasty.
Brewing has come a long way from "hey, just dump this in there" to "measure it out specifically...or else."

Part of my being disturbed is the breakfast cereal part ( I have never been a fan of the kids' cereal----even when I was a kid---- I am weird like that). Then like I said I get the image of a bowl of Lucky Charms floating in beer instead of milk..

As for the beer milkshakes--- I was referring to actual milkshakes made with beer, not milkshake style beer. I know people who made actual milkshakes with Natty Light and ice cream---that is disturbing.

I know a guy who did that when he was a super senior in Fox Ridge. Cheerios, Frosted Flakes, I saw a few but I don't remember Lucky Charms. It wouldn't have surprised me, though.

Dessert IPAs have been popular now for a while and are delicious, but the high amount of sugar paired with alcohol can sometimes give me a nasty hangover.

No. It actually doesn't even have to be sugar. I can explain.

There are sugars that are not fermentable. For instance the sugars that make up caramel are too complex a structure for yeast to consume. So, if you make a beer using certain types of malted barley such as crystals or caramels, or use a high mash temperature so that the enzymes cannot trim down the starches into simple sugars, the unfermented sugar will remain behind after the yeast consumes all it can. It doesn't take much to do this.

The other way to do it is to fool your brain into thinking it is sweet, when it is not.
Certain flavors will fool your brain into anticipating a sweet flavor.
For instance, vanilla will present itself as a sweet impression, which is not there.

It is particularly true with something like a NE IPA which has very little or no bittering hop but lots of hops that remind you of tropical fruit and citrus. You are already inclined to taste the sweetness of the fruit, which actually doesn't exist because the fruit aromas are from hops.

Think about the York Peppermint Patty commercial and the minty flavor. "Biting into a York Peppermint patty reminds me of standing on a breezy mountaintop in the snow", kind of thing.

Ah, it's marketing.
It's a New England IPA with Galaxy and Calypso as the primary hop profile.

Marshmallow is sugar, gelatin and corn syrup (If you want it to remain pliable) so it's essentially added sugar.
Gelatin is not an uncommon element in beer used to cause yeast to fall to the bottom along with polyphenols and then removed from the beer so, nothing out of the ordinary there.

If I did this I'd just make the marshmallow without corn syrup and have at it.

You could do it to remind you of the flavor, if you wanted, it's just toasted cereal grains like barley, oats and corn.
Add in a little fruity hops as dry hop, make it hazy and tell people it tastes like cereal and they will be influenced to taste Lucky Charms, for St, Patty's Day.

I'll add........ I haven't seen one article where the brewer says it will taste just like Lucky Charms. I have seen the terms "inspired by" and that it uses marshmallows. My thinking is that's the marketing and it's more the news outlets who are suggesting it tastes just like it.

The brewer says that it is "a sweet and citrus nose with "a slight cereal taste." Well that can be any beer brewed correctly with the right grains.

I'm with you that it's probably a nice fruity IPA that's close to Saturday morning sugar crunch cereal and that's about it.

I agree with your sours recommendation. Both are in or near Brussels and easy enough to get to. I went to Cantillon in August. The tour in English was really good and the ability to drink several bottles that you could not buy to take out was great. I didn't make it to 3 Fonteinen but had many of their beers and could be a consideration. Some places I hit that I recommend:

Brussels Beer Project - craft brewery that does tours
Moeder Lambic - great spot to grab some beers
A La Mort Subite - a historical spot for beer
Bier Circus - restaurant/bar with a nice selection of beers

Westvleteren is awesome stuff but their hours and general location is tough to get to depending on the itinerary. I would imagine most Trappist places are like this as well.

Cantillon is definitely on my list. I really want to make it out to Westvleteren to try Westvleteren XII, but it seems like a bitch to get there. Would my best bet be to rent a car in Brussels/Ghent and just drive out there for the day? I guess I could also swing by St. Bernardus because it's nearby.

If all you care to do is have a bottle, you can find them if you pay for it. They had them at the base here for $16/bottle. If you want to buy a bunch to take back, then it would be worth it as they are significantly cheaper. I remember reading some advice online on how to visit them and it's not as straight forward as walking up and buying off the shelf. Definitely do your research for that one

BeerControlOffense's link outlines the difficult process you have to go through to get beer from the source for Westy 6, 8, or 12. You have to call a month 60 days in advance, provide a Belgian license plate for the car you'll be driving, and say which of the 3 you want - you can't get an assorted case. My parents didn't know this was the case when they showed up and got lucky that they took pity on them.

I think the peak is at 2 years. 3 years and you start getting some oxidation which detracts from the wonderful fresh sweet bread flavors.

I think in the book Brew like a Monk, some of the Monasteries have guest stays you can request. Like Westmalle. You get to tour the brewery and monastery. You could probably only choose one for the limited time. I think that some of the gift shops and local shops have some of he beers.

edit: Actually I stand corrected: You can't actually tour the brewery at Westmalle. (so as not to disturb the Monks).

I'm a fan of Brasserie Dupont's Saison. Don't know jack about the brewery. Same for Rodenbach. Like their products. Don't know anything about the brewing operation. Both are in Belgium.

I know you're sticking to the western side of things. But if I were on a beer tour, I'd recommend Czech Republic.

I was in brussels a few years ago and while I didn't go to any breweries, I did do a beer and chocolate tour around the city. It was easily the best 70 euro I have every spent.

Some other Belgian breweries that I haven't seen mentioned:
Fantome makes great saisons/farmhouse beers
Brasserie Blaugies (mostly saisons as well)
De La Senne variety of solid beers. Outside of Brussels
Check out the Delirium bar. It's a 3 or 4 level beer bar with a ton of options.

To add on: I would highly recommend touring Cantillon and if you can swing it, Drie Fonteinen. Drie Fonteinen moved into a new facility a couple years ago so I'm not sure what the tour would be like now. But, I would strongly suggest finding yourself in a lambic brewer's barrel room if you can.

While I'm only planning on hitting two, there are a ton of releases on the shore this weekend. Burely is dropping 5 cans, RAR is dropping 4 cans, a bottle, and 6 flavors of Out of Order, Dewey is dropping 3 with a rumor of a 4th, Revelation is dropping 3, and Mispillion has a few dropping. Not sure, but 3rd Wave might be dropping one or two as well.

I'm only getting RAR and Dewey, but should be some nice tap lineups around in the next month.

I brewed a 1/4 bbl batch of a Gluten Free beer, a pale ale SMASH. Came out a lot better than I thought it would. Tested out under 5ppm gluten, that's the lowest the test would go.
I'm doing a 4 bbl batch of it next week. I'm just going to do some things to add a little more body and change the hop schedule a little.

I'm curious - from what I understand the "real" beers (i.e. not sorghum or rice based) that are GF have the gluten filtered out post-brewing. Is that right? Any insight you can share on how that's done and how difficult it is? How does it impact the end result?

Just a homebrewer here so maybe Egbert can correct me.

Gluten free beers are brewed with grains or sugar sources that do not contain gluten, so gluten never even touched the beer. They are hard to make taste great.

Gluten reduced beer is normal beer with Clarityferm added when the yeast is pitched, which breaks down the gluten in the beer. These beers are typically OK for gluten intolerant people but not for people with Celiac Disease. These include beers like Omission and Stone Delicious IPA. Final Gravity in Richmond makes killer beer that is all gluten reduced. No idea why more breweries don't do it.

Yep - the reduction process is what I was referring to, thanks. My wife doesn't have Celiac, but really can't process gluten. She's had no issues with any of the Omission varieties, and I think she's had Delicious as well. All of them are much better options than any of the true GF beers, for sure.

Interesting on Clarity Ferm. Does it change flavor or any other critical factors at all? If not, I agree, it would be great if it was more common. It would be an added cost to a tight-margin business, though.

I've noticed no flavor difference with Clarityferm but I haven't had a chance to brew 2 identical batches and do a side by side yet.

I will say that Final Gravity is winning awards using it in their beer for all kinds of styles. I think their base stout and hazy IPAs are as good as any I've tried. They have a great Amber and brown ale as well.

Let me ask this board and thread, in a very unscientific survey: How many of you would be interested in taking a short brewing course at Technical University of Munich - Weihenstephan and then going on a beer tour in Germany (could be conglomerate of other countries). The short course would be ~2 weeks at Weihenstephan Research Brewery and include lectures and hands-on brewing work. The work would cover theory and practical learning starting at raw materials all the way through sensory evaluation of the final products.

The beer tour would be ~1 week in duration. Course at TUM would be ~ $2-3,000 dollars (covering lectures, materials, lunch, dinners and field trips. Tour costs TBD. I know it is expensive, but you get top notch, famous instructors at a famous brewing institution. This would be offered using our existing VT-TUM collaboration in some shape or form, perhaps Alumni tours.

Interested? Yes. Allowed by my wife? Doubtful.

Related, but not: I've asked a few local breweries if I could come watch them brew for a day or so. They've all very quickly said no. I've even offered to be manual labor while doing so. I've worked on 15 gallon systems, but never gotten to do anything larger. I'm mostly just curious about how the bigger systems work in person. I've read plenty, and watched videos and the like. But, mostly, process just fascinates me.
I've yet to find one who even hesitated before saying no. I'm assuming they're afraid I'll take what's learned and suddenly become the competition.

BTW: Chaos Mountain is the only brewery in the local region, that I know of and have tried, that is doing the Belgian Quads and the Belgian SDA correctly. Some local Roanoke brewery's are too cloying and can't get the creamy head retention of the style. So great work. Only other person who seems to understand Beligans is Doug John in Lynchburg.

I think the big beer companies buying up craft breweries is bad for craft beer. The story below is a good example of my fears.

AB-InBev Just "Commandeered" the Entire South African Hops Market

In general, I try not to drink beer that is now owned by "Big" beer. I'm not saying everyone should, I just make it a habit of supporting the hundred (if not thousands) of locally owned and operated breweries in the US that haven't sold out (and yes, Dogfish Head selling to Sam Adams is).

I don't actually think the big 3/Sam Adams cares about putting out a good product, and I think over time, that will start to reflect in the product. Maybe Sam Adams/DFH can prove me wrong, but I think I have more reasons to be bullish than hopeful.

Boston Lager, when fresh, is a very good beer.
It's just tough to get fresh, it does not travel well outside of a keg. You get a fresh keg, and it's wonderful.
That's mostly on the distributors.

Ask the guys in Boston area. On draft fresh, very good.

You don't think beer takeovers that significantly widen distribution won't extend that problem onto the breweries they acquire?

I think you've illustrated a point that I didn't think of that adds to my pessimism.

Different beers are impacted in different ways do to handling after purchase.

Some distributors are better than others.
For instance, in Norfolk, for quite some time, you could get fresh, well handled Bostons Lager.
Then the distribution relationship changed and the taste of the beer took a nose dive.

This is not comparable to other "little guys" being bought by one of the large international corps. This is two guys joining forces.

While I agree with you, the terms of the deal appear to be Boston Beer is essentially buying Dogfish Head.

From what I read, $170M in cash to go to Dogfish Head and their investors, $130M in Boston Beer stock straight to Sam and his wife plus Boston Beer board seats for them.

I'm not sure how much longer Sam and his wife wanted to be in this game. Her father was hit and killed while biking a few months ago. And he's won the James Beard award and opened several successful businesses in DE. I think he hit the end and wanted to go do something else. In a the merger, someone is always the bigger end and someone is stepping away to some extent. Good on Sam, he (and she) got theirs on this deal.

The same? No. Comparable? We'll see. Sam Adams "variety" beers are crap. Boston Lager is decent. DFH on the other hand pushes the limits on beer and puts out a hell of a product.

I'd hardly say theres NO cause for concern that BBCo will bastardize and mass market the product (even if to a lower extent than say, InBev would)

This one doesn't bother me as much because like Sierra Nevada, I think Sam Adams has been open to pushing styles and turning out beers that have some unique traits. My hope is that the folks from DFH bring in some more of that adventurous spirit and combined with the reach of Sam Adams, we get some really good stuff available at stores that only have the shelf space to accommodate the big brands. DFH was already hard to find in most stores, so hopefully this expand their reach and I think Jim Koch will welcome the creativity of the DFH brand.

As far as the shelf space, Sam/DFH isn't going to outbid (thats how it works) shelf space from InBev, Miller, and Coors, they are going to outbid the smaller breweries. You aren't going to see what you're hoping for.

Maybe where I live is different, but I can get a great variety of local/east coast/CO/CA beers not owned by the big companies and be very content. I'd just hate to see my local favorites get shut down because they're overrun by Goose Island (Big 3), Ballast Point (big 3), Devils Backbone (big 3), Wicked Weed (big 3), etc etc

eh, I am pretty sure Ballast Point is not "Big 3" . Their parent company is Constellation Brands. And DFH has a lot of turnover in employees. And Sam was always in it for himself, don't forget about that.

and to the notes above about Distributors and freshness, Egbert has it 100% correct. And most craft brewers have no control over what happens in the distribution chain, except for those few who meet regulations in CA like Sierra and my former employer who do self distribute in CA. It's all about control of the product all the way to the cooler in the store. *The laws may have changed since I was there...

The "Big 3" are very good at quality control, it's why they pay for, and make their distributors store and haul all of their product in refrigerated wharehouses and trucks, they can also afford to pay for this and for the big huge walk-in coolers at larger grocery stores. It's all about Quality Control and Assurance. And make no mistake about it, the craft brewers, both large and small, are pursuing this type of Quality Control as well, but it takes time, relationships and money to make this happen. Sam Adams, Sierra and NBB and a few others have reached that stage because they are big enough now and can have enough money to make it happen.

Now in Germany, you can sign up to have your brewery drop a case of at your house on a weekly schedule. the Breweries, for the most part, self distribute. And that truck comes direct from the brewery to your house and is... refrigerated but owned by the brewery. They take your case of empties, and leave a full case. Oh how I wish...
Breweries also subsidize bier gartens, restaurants and pubs, many times paying for furnishings and equipment for the owner, and that is why you can only buy their beer at that restaurant. Very common!

DFH was already hard to find in most stores

I think Ohio has some odd laws about distro'ing beer from other states.
Look around in Virginia and you can find a LOT of DFH beer around. Heck, 622 North Main (Old Bogen's) had a tap takeover last week and has like 9 on tap right now. I live less than 45 minutes away and find more variety in VA.

I'm not certain the distribution laws had as much to do with it as the geographic difference between Cincinnatti and Cleveland do.

Ohio only recently permitted the sale of beer >10% ; that's the only odd beer law I was aware of. But as a former resident of NE Ohio, that place is craft beer heaven. Even the bomber selection of DFH is available in chain grocery stores. While the distribution of 3 Floyd's had only recently expanded to Ohio, I could find Zombie Dust regularly on the shelf of a nearby grocery store (the "town" I lived in had 3 prospering craft beer stores as well).

In comparison, whenever we were in Cincinnatti, we'd only hit up Party Source or Jungle Jim's if we were shopping for beer/bourbon. (Giant stores with a huge selection). It wasn't reliable to find the beer you wanted in a grocery store there.

Columbus has a craft beer scene far more comparable to Cleveland than Cincy.

We have a huge local scene here in Cincy (I think its now over 50 breweries) and you get either local or national at your average place that sells beer. There are a handful of stores that have a good selection of international and craft from around the country and you can find the DFH 60 and 90 min IPAs there routinely. I am more hoping that because Sam Adams has a bigger reach that it will mean shelf space for bears along the lines of what DFH has been making whereas before you wouldn't have anything like it. If you are Jim Koch, you don't hand over $300 million dollars just to take DFH beers off the shelf, they weren't that much of a direct threat to Sam Adams. You buy them because they are a sure bet to increase the range of products Sam Adams can put out rather than spending the money to try to develop new products and then compete.

Taft and Rheingeist are my favorite breweries! My wife has a good friend who distributes for Mad Tree, but they hadn't shipped past Columbus until about a year or two ago. My mother-in-law lives in the middle of Cincy, so the local markets she frequents aren't great on selection. I'm glad to hear the selection is actually very good!

I moved to Missouri this winter, and while they have a few decent microbrews around, I've resorted to stocking up on one IPA out of St. Louis (Illumination). No more Great Lakes, FatHeads, Market Garden, Columbus, Rheingeist, Hoppin' Frog, Thirsty Dog, FFF, Elevator, Platform, etc... Boo.

I'm trying to warm up to lagers now.

Rheingeist has at least 1 hokie on staff. Good beer and cider there.

Boulevard (KC) and Perennial (STL) are two top-tier breweries in MO

Flying to Cincy this weekend for a family thing and checking a bag to bring back some Cincy goodies. Is there anything that's a must grab? I haven't been back in awhile so the only local I've had is Rhinegeist.

Madtree might have unseated Rhinegeist as the top dog in town and right now they have Shade out which is a slightly fruity slightly sour ale that I love drinking in the sun. Madtree almost always has Lift and Psychopathy out in cans everywhere. You will find Christian Moerline in cans everywhere, they are the oldest brewery in town and tend to stick to the styles with a few variations. Taft's (OTR and North Side) you will find as well, they won the GABF Gold for Gustav their Vienna Lager. Brink (west side) and Braxton (Covington, KY) have been putting out a lot of good beer lately, but I don't think you will find Brink in cans/bottles outside of the brewery. Urban Artifact (North Side), for my money, makes the best beers in Cincy, but they specialize in sours which is not everyone's fav, you can usually find their stuff around town, its worth a try. Weideman's (St. Bernard) also got restarted, so your parents/aunts/uncles can relieve their glory days, but I also don't think they have built up to selling cans. Listermann's in Norwood (by Xavier U) has bottles and cans for sale at the taproom, they are hit or miss as they like to push the boundaries of styles and don't always make a winner, but they are the homebrew shop and move a lot of volume, $4 pours on Sundays. The last place I like but don't get over to often enough is Nine Giant (Pleasant Ridge), they are supposed to be adding on an aging/souring room, I have never had a bad beer there, but haven't been in a couple months and I don't see their cans in local stores.

My sister-in-law works for a beer distributor in Ohio and she can get anything if the breweries are selling it here and have enough volume, but they move what stores order, so its slow to get it new stuff from smaller breweries which means you miss the seasonals.

Yay - more average craft beer for more people!

I think this is someone what similar to when ABInBev gobbles up a craft brewery - there is a lot of power in how ABInBev can position products within their distributors and retailers, and having two very large craft breweries do this is going to result in very similar power. Oskar Blues and Cigar City are another example - those beers are so easy to find now when 5 years ago, it was special to find Jai Alai in Virginia.

I don't see it as the same as and ABInBev takeover. ABInBev usually buys the craft up for one or two flagship beers, does away with the rest and begins the process of reducing cost by using their standardized supply of ingredients (usually to the detriment of the flavor profile of the beer) and widens the reach in order to commandeer shelf space. I don't think Sam Adams plays by the same model. Yes, the likely do some things differently than I think Jim Koch would prefer in order to stay in a price point between ABInBev and craft brews, but I don't believe Jim is buying up DFH to gut it. I am hoping to see some more unique stuff out of this merger rather than a dulling down of DFH to mass market it.

EDIT: I should clarify that when I say local I mean Cincy local. I only see a little bit of stuff from Warped Wing (Dayton), Great Lakes (Cleveland), and Jackie O's (Athens, OH). Hardly anything else from Ohio can find space with all of the Cincy stuff on shelves.

Having run Devils Backbone's Outpost in Lexington for 6 years before ABI purchased it, I can confirm that they DON'T change the recipes. Why would they? They certainly have enough clout that they can get the ingredients for cheaper than the brewery could originally, so I don't equate that to dumbing down the beer. In fact, with all their instrumentation, QA/QC practices, and superior processing equipment the beer will most likely be better than when they got it. Every brewery out there is fighting for better yields, better margins, etc. That doesn't mean that some consumer have to approve of their tactics, but saying they ruin the flavor of the beer is just a nonsensical argument not based in reality.

Maybe its a mental thing, but I used to think the DB Vienna Lager was a great beer and a very good example of the style. When I was in DC for a wedding last year I tried two different DB VLs on different days and locations (both on tap) and was sorely disappointed. I chalked it up to InBev likely tinkering with the ingredients as I had heard they do. I assumed they just subbed out one strain of hops for the InBev strains, switched malts to InBev's preferred, kept the same yeast and hope no one notices the difference.

Medium posted this article earlier this year about AB InBev's strategy that killed the craft beer buzz. There are a lot of valid points and observations in this article- worth the read.

In response to the edit: A lot of those beers aren't going to be found on shelves. They are limited run, smaller batches, that should be kept cold along the way and in the store. Most places won't reserve cooler shelf space for hyper-local small-batch brews. On top of that, the brewery is able to sell out fairly quickly with 4packs for sale on-premise which drives people into the tap rooms.

Yep. I believe it's in their blood... they just don't do it. We had a student intern at their research brewery and They love to play with spices, etc., but for some reason hop blending is not their thing for whatever reason.

Anyone been to Budapest? I'm going there Memorial Day weekend for a beer festival and looking for must-go spots when not festivaling.

I do a naturally fermented beer every year at 36 proof. I have at on draft regularly. We'll sell you 1 draft. then it's on a case by case basis.

As of 1 July a new law went into effect that allows advertising on happy hour advertising for alcoholic beverages in Virginia. In the past, you could advertise food but not alcohol prices.

I've seen a lot of new posts on FB regarding Happy hour pricing.

There's also a minimum food sales requirement, plus you have to sell food up until 30 minutes before you close. I should probably know all these rules better considering I just took the ABC server test.

TSL Stick It In Ale is decent. Basically a branding gimmick, but the profits are going toward TSL's Sports Journalism Scholarship, so the $50/case price is easier to handle.

Just had Honolulu (16.5%) at Aslin's new Alexandria location, enjoyed it a lot.

Sorry, just seeing this now. Stouts - Glamping, Pisghetti, How Now Brown Cow; a saison in wine barrels, dark lager, 4-5 ipas/dipas/tipa, sour ale and berliner mixed with fruit. Think that's it, cans sales start tomorrow at the Alexandria location

I just bought the How Now Brown Cow yesterday at their Herndon Location. That beer tastes exactly like chocolate and peanut butter. Most of those types of peanut butter chocolate beers I've had taste like a stout first and foremost and then have small hints of chocolate and peanut butter. This one is all chocolate and all peanut butter the entire time.

Picked up a two Imperial Stouts from Aslins barrel aged series. Both are 16.5% aged in bourbon barrels for 18 months. I am going to wait until this fall/winter to try them, but I heard they are pretty good and surprisingly smooth from people that have tried it already.

I had not heard of this, I will watch for it.

I agree. I think they were more saying that they implemented the two bottle max rule, but people still are collecting a lot of bottles through the use of family and friends with the sole purpose to sell the beer for a profit.

Well if Aslin wanted to do something about the resellers, they'd only offer these beers on draught (like Honolulu) and decline to do growler/crowler fills of them.

I feel like the retail price of $30 for 500ml is already pretty steep, but then you see people reselling them for $75-100 fairly often. I guess there's enough uber-stout fanatics who don't live near northern VA and are willing to pay a premium.

Also, if you're ever near their new location in Aslin, they offer "bottle service" which I guess is previous beers they have released that they have held on to age a little longer after bottling.

I'm curious if that is a list of places the distributor handles but, I know that Kroger handles it's SKU's from Cincinnati. They have not performed a shelf reset since this was available so, check before you commit to bringing a bunch somewhere.

I'm really curious if anyone has ever had Wadadli Lager?

We just got back from our honeymoon in Antigua and this is pretty much all I drank (to be fair, it's all they had at the resort). I really loved it as evidenced by drinking enough of it to fill a community swimming pool. To me, it was just really drinkable. I love beer, but I'm not educated in describing flavor profiles with the proper nomenclature, so I'll just say it was light, slightly sweet, and just the right amount of hoppiness.

However, I really want to get others' impressions and see if I was just loving it because it was different and the only beer they had.
