My 2019 Season Challenge: only comment with Star Wars memes. (completed as of Nov. 29)

2 questions. Any news on Xavier Kelley, DT from Clemson? How do we feel about our chances with Naquon Brown? Haven't heard much on either of these guys. Thought I'd get my question in before the gif parade

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

Brown is on campus.

No idea how likely but we need to land some blue chip DEs again.

Say Wat, son? Landyn soon before he goes elsewhere!

Probably need to take 2-3, but I would be okay with just two if they are quality like Watson. We really made that room look a lot more promising with the late additions of Beadles, Bryant, and Wooten.

I thought we were still mad at Bill for what he said about our facilities.

So I spent a few seconds trying to figure out how to pronounce Oudna and thinking that must be part of his name.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I was thinking it is OU DNA all combined.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Choose my reply!

  • can't wait for your meltdown about how our coaches can't close on recruits if he picks NCSU or Pitt
  • class of 16 recruits is still relatively tiny
  • we wouldn't have the 68th ranked recruiting class if he comes to us
  • he hasn't signed yet

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Since it's more than 16, that one is out

3 enrollees (Bailey, Lee, Clements), 11 NLIs (Bryant, Wooten, Saunders, Beadles, Hampton, Rudolph, Jenkins, Brunson, Strong, Moore, Pene), and 1 commit (Wright) makes 15 total right now. Battle would be 16.

Didn't he not even visit us?...

pretty sure he cancelled his trip here to go on an OV to Pitt this past weekend

Gobble Till You Wobble

did he cancel the OV or did we cancel the OV?

It takes two to tango.. er to schedule an OV.

sometimes the question is the answer

We had an in home. It didn't go well.

Go on....

I haven't heard any specifics about it, but for whatever reason we moved on after the in-home, and the word is similar from NC State.

That sounds more like lack of interest on our part (as well as NC State's) rather than his - did I read that right? And it's not a miss if we move on.

LoL, he's not coming here.

Curious. Why would he show VT in his final three if his in home went so poorly? Why not just put out your top 2?

Looks more impressive to include a big time football school in his top 3.

Obvious answer.

Something appeared to happen after his visit to NC State where both VT and NC State backed off on Battle. Not sure what happened.

He's 1000% going to Pitt. He didn't visit VT

Yup, I did a 6 year stint for a BA

Also, wonder what Des Evans is thinking since he fell for that hucksters pitch.

Yep, Pierson prioleau was pretty good speaker. I asked what his favorite play was from his playing days and he said intercepting the potentially game tying 2 point conversion against Miami in 97. Was laughingly disappointed at getting run down by da U's rb. Was also clear about the transfer portal: they will do such a good job educating the players about pros and cons from here on out that anyone in the portal likely will not be coming back, because they already know they want to leave for sure.

sounds like one of the cons of entering the portal is "we won't hold your spot" /ducks

Makes sense when you think about what Fuente said about it being a failure on their part to educate them, just wish Fu coulda worded it better so we didn't this whole shit going on now

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Honestly if you listen to his whole answer and not just read the headline, that made some stretch assumptions, then his answer was fine. He said it was his fault for HH and Mclease last year for not educating them enough. Said that won't happen again. Said each one moving forward is a case-by-case basis.

I do feel that overall he needs to work on his coach speak and addressing situations for the fans. I feel this one is much ado about nothing.

But I thought we liked Mike Young for lack of coach speak?

I do know what you mean though, ever time I hear Fuente quotes taken out of context all I can think is, "did I write that for him? A head football coach shouldn't sound like me."

I lost the flyer for the Tidewater area talk. Does anyone have that info?

I'm just here to sling some legs

Man I am going to stay off recruiting threads for awhile since its the dreaded offseason, but I really hope this 2021 class will be top 20-25. In order to get there based off this year's stats, we need about 8 four/five stars combined along with a .88 avg recruit rank. There is more upper level talent in VA and NC than last year combined with the TX2VT connection and we should hopefully get to that mark with the 26-28 schollys that will be available.

Ryan Smith should just set up a weekly visit to Princess Anne to get Grimes here. I would give me a 3 year contract if he was able to land us our first composite 5 star since Super Bowl Champ Kendall Fuller.

I agree that's what we need, but I will sincerely be surprised if we land more than 5 blue chips. We have DD and need to keep him. Naquon Brown seems like we have a solid chance. There's 0% chance we get Grimes or Henderson. Tristan Leigh is probably a 50:50 between us and UVA. I'm sure there be some late bloomers and some more out of state kids, but I don't see it improving tremendously

Looks like a couple of offers to rbs today. Do you think that has anything to do with Campbell potentially cooling off? Or would you say this is business as usual?

i don't have any connections to the program or anything, just share what i see on twitter about reported offers. I have no clue about Campbell's recruitment other than that he seemed very interested in us at one point and has since been getting a ton of big boy offers, but i wouldn't draw a straight line between his recruitment and us offering anyone in the 2022 class (like Omarion Hampton here)

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I missed the class initially. Thanks, appreciate your levelheaded response

Is there a way to track offers? Seems like our offer number is insane right now.

I doubt VT's number of offers is an outlier.

Everybody offers everybody now. Even though they get treated like it here, 80% or more of VT offers aren't news. Like so much of college athletics now, their basic purpose is to just keep up with the Joneses - and keep the VT name out there in the twitter-verse.

There was a thread on /r/cfb the other day about this that I can't find. I believe Tech was listed at 6th, while Nebraska was far and away the school sending out the most offers for 2021.

Edit:

Class of 2019:

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

They release numbers every year and Frost has lead every year. I'm surprised we were 6th, but reading this thread it really made me feel like we are offering more than in the past which if I remember correctly was in the middle of the pack ( which is still tons of offers)

Just wondering if high offer #s is a good strategy? Any data on this?

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

I don't think it matters much from the numbers I've seen, but havent done in depth analysis. But for 2019 Southern Miss offered more DEs than Stanford made offers in general. Kentucky, Tennesse and Ole Miss were top ten in offers but I wouldnt say they are doing that well compared to the rest of their conference. UVA offered 100 more than VT yet we had a worse year (Still beat them) and a better class.

I think there are a lot of mind games coaches play in recruiting that dont really ever pan out, like making an offer an elusive thing, which if no one has an offer then no one is coming to your school. (Schools like Stanford can be a bit more selective though). But if you give out an offer to everyone then you are going to have to tell kids no and that's not a great thing on a large scale. And these kids talk to each other. So I'd rather be in the middle especially with a small recruiting staff since there is only so much time you can review film and such.

One really important thing to remember:

According to John Iezzi in his recent podcast interview, any offer to a VA kid is a committable offer.

So my take on the increased number of offers, especially since a bunch of them are going to TX, OK, Midwest kids, is that most aren't likely committable offers. It's probably a strategy to show these kids that the coaches like what the see, and then if an OV is scheduled coaches can determine who is actually interested in the program. My guess is that if some of these kids camp with the coaching staff, or actually come to Blacksburg, those offers probably turn to committable offers.

I think part of it is that life is a little stressful and work is pretty slow, so I started scrolling twitter as a distraction and figured embedding the offers would help. It's not that there weren't offers going out before, I don't think we were really tracking them here in the recruiting threads like we are now. And it's a time of year where offers are most likely the only noteworthy tidbits.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

We are not really 6th since it is so far out. You cant tell if we are just getting on kids early hoping to lock them in and then others come in later (explaining why 2019 we were so far down the list).

Danny is always open
23 can't read

This is why I dismiss "Number of P5 offers as indicator of recruiting effectiveness/quality". You think all 440 of Tennessee's offers are real/committable? LOL. How about 200 plus VT offers.. real? all of them? Yeah, nope not under any circumstance.

We have a meager 171, You're looking at football super power Duke's 200+ offers. They are beating us by 55, deja vu all over again...

but then why complain if a recruit has none? not every P5 offer might be commitable (e.g. see CJ Beasley), but I highly doubt there are players bringing in 15+ P5 offers and all of them are noncommittable

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

We need to meet in the middle, sure. You think Cole Beck's offer list was all real? I don't and this list lends credence to that. VT has 25 spots at most for 2021 and has over 250 offers out. a whole bunch of them are not commitable.

Maybe they were, maybe they weren't --- you know just as well as I do where he was or wasn't a take. Do you think there's any value in looking at a recruit's offer list?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I think that going on 3 years into the program not having taken a snap in a game has me skeptical. He was a late take for VT anyway. There is value looking at a recruit like Devon Hunter's offer list- sure. I'm guessing his Bama and Clemson offers were commitable since he was one of the highest rated safeties in the country. I'm guessing Kendall Fuller's Clemson offer was real, yes. It's not that hard to figure out.

I think that going on 3 years into the program not having taken a snap in a game has me skeptical.

It seems that you're letting hindsight cloud the assessment of Beck ahead of signing day in December 2017 -- just because he hasn't taken a snap in two years doesn't mean his offers from Pitt, BC, UNC, Louisville, and UVA weren't committable. Maybe i agree with you that he was never SEC material and wouldn't have been a take a Miss St and that's an outlier -- but his lack of snaps in two seasons at VT doesn't inform anything about those programs' opinions of him as a take two years ago.

But using Beck as an example, the majority of his offers were lower FBS or FCS -- your ODU, Liberty, Richmond, Marshall, JMU, ECU, App St, Bowling Green types. I think his offer list shows that he was viewed as a developmental prospect at the P5 level, but probably would have been a contributor at G5 or FCS level. Doesn't mean everyone else didn't view him as a take.

I also think of someone like Landyn Watson from the 2021 class. Evidently he got "processed" by LSU and isn't a take there. But that doesn't actually tell us anything about whether or not his offers from PSU, Ok St, Michigan, Ole Miss, ND, etc are or aren't committable. And if we're able to land him, we should be excited about that -- similar to how we were excited about Devon Hunter and Kendall Fuller (and Dax, for instance), and to why we were disappointed when Devyn Ford and KJ Henry didn't come.

Even so, it's useful to me to see us extend offers to players who have drawn interest from other programs. It helps me be more confident of our evals and our recruiting as opposed to signing players who are "diamonds in the rough" that need to seriously develop to justify having been takes. Because recruiting one particular player doesn't happen in a vacuum, looking at recruits comparatively and relative to other programs
are both important.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I would imagine the coaching staff has a list of their preferred players, and a list of in case, players, and a list of oh god we didn't land anybody we wanted players.

One argument is you can't land the players you don't offer. Also, these coaches have to cast a large enough net to guarantee a full class, but small enough to not overstretch resources.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I kind of agree with this and I kind of don't. Your right, the number of offers isn't relevant. However I think it demonstrates that the effort is being made by VT to cast a wider net. The offer isn't the whole story. Can you get the kid on campus? That's the key. If they can get more kids on campus for officials, they have more opportunities to fill those 25 spots with quality up and down the recruiting class.

I think it'd also be interesting to see how many offers go out per expected open spots? That is a bit of a guessing game obviously with transfers, medical retirements, leaving early for the Draft, etc. but I'd say each program has a decent idea. Say Tech is looking at a class in the mid 20's, that's about 10 offers per open spot right now. Seems fair.

What is fair (or unfair) about 10 offers per spot?

Maybe 40 or 50 of the 250 (and counting) offers are in real-ville. The rest are either non-committable offers, pie-in-the-sky nothing-to-lose offers, or keeping up with the Jones' offers just to keep VT's name out there in the twitter-world.

I get the impression that most of these are actually committable offers, in the sense that we'd accept a commitment up until that position's slots are full. So there is also first-commit, first-scholarship type situation. And I agree that some are only contingent or 'wait-list' type offers.

Say we're taking 3 RB. We send out 20 offers. Obviously we can't take 20 RB in one class, but I think only a few of those, say 5, would be contingent or "backup" offers that only become committable late in the cycle if we don't get someone higher on the board and/or if the contingent offeree shows sufficient development over their senior season.

The other 15 offers are all commitable when issued, in the sense that we'd take a commitment from any of those 15 players. Of course some are totally unrealistic and are like you say, just to get our name out there. so we're working with a dozen or so "legit" offers. Also as commits come or players develop over the summer/senior season, the landscape and our board can change. Say the first two commits come in pretty early and they are a little down our board, like #11 and #14. We accept but then reframe that 3rd RB spot for the remaining prospects on the top of our board only, going around and letting each player know their updated status.. board positions #1-8 all get told, this spot is still open for you. The others get told numbers are getting tight we are still interested but we may not have room for you. Then we continue recruiting all of them, especially the ones that reciprocate interest.

So you (and apparently 13 others...) actually think it's all first come, first served with 250 offers out there? So if the least talented of those 20 RBs says today "hell yeah, I'm in for a full scholly to Virginia Tech" that he's good to go? Or even the 11th best?

Good luck with that.

Official visits - which represent a real investment by both parties but particularly VT - are a FAR better barometer of the caliber of and real interest by potential recruits in VT and VT's interest in potential recruits. The rest of this is largely nonsense.

So you actually think it's all first come, first served

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I get the impression that most of these are actually committable offers, in the sense that we'd accept a commitment up until that position's slots are full. So there is also first-commit, first-scholarship type situation. And I agree that some are only contingent or 'wait-list' type offers.

edit: take the smug condescension elsewhere. you keep editing your comment and somehow keep managing to get even further away from how any reasonable person would read Orion's comment regarding "first come first serve" based on, you know, what was actually commented.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I'm not sure your argument even works. There's over 100 D1 schools. There's a top 25 ranking of the FBS schools. If each of them takes 1 RB in a year, that's 25. If we offer the top 20 RBs in a year and the least talented hops on board, I'm not sure that's a bad thing. The question is how good is the 20th RB? Even if it's not the top 20 we offer, he may still be pretty darn good.

And it's not necessarily first-come, first-served. Here's a great article about a "committable offer."
Link

And not sure official visits are the best indicator. Dematrius Davis has visited Tech twice unofficially and is considered a hard commit. He has not visited officially. Do you know if everybody visits officially before they sign? If not, how many/what percent of them do? If you don't know, your statement about it being a FAR better barometer is nothing more than conjecture. On the other hand, do you know how many how many athletes take official visits that do NOT sign? I've heard some of them like the treatment on official visits and take all 5 just to do it even if they have their decision already made.

Edit: I'm guessing our 20th RB probably is NOT that great, but the number 11 one might be pretty good. Was just trying to demonstrate scale in that first paragraph.

I'm going to be honest, this reads a bit like clinging for some moral superiority over other teams in something that really doesn't matter at all. We are selective with our spots like every other team in the country, and we don't let just anyone commit on a first come first serve basis.

The guys are tiered, there is a big board, and we don't let the 20th RB commit until we are sure we won't hit on guys before him.

Your statement:

I'm going to be honest, this reads a bit like clinging for some moral superiority .... The guys are tiered, there is a big board, and we don't let the 20th RB commit until we are sure we won't hit on guys before him.

Orion's statement:

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Son of a bitch...I knew someone was going to do this so I'll be more specific.

We don't have 15 RB's that are takes today. That isn't how it works.

The whole thing reads like something that makes us slightly more "honorable" in the way we are offering kids. Building a recruiting class is a complicated numbers game, and it's naive to think we would have 15/20 takes at a position on a first come first serve basis. If we offer 20 RB's, the 15th guy on our board does not have the green light today. That isn't how it works for us, and it isn't how it works for anyone.

These offers aren't even "official" offers until like August 1st or something like that.

I think it largely depends on how many players we are expecting to take at a position. If we are taking 3, I dont think it would be unreasonable to accept a commit that is say 7th on our board, but taking the 7th makes the other two slots more selective. It would be bad planning to only assume you are going to take the top of your board first considering the blue chip guys are likely to be some of the last to commit (not always but often).

Then there is the unexpected good fortune that can happen where we do get serious interest from the superior recruits. That is when the early commit may see the writing on the wall and reopen recruitment on his own or we give a slight nudge.

"I am probably too rational to be here"

Well, neither of us have insight into what is going on with how VT recruits. What we do KNOW is that VT has often accepted a lower ranked recruit's commitment early.

For instance, for 2021, VT has accepted the commitment of Jalen Hoyle, the 12th best safety out of 17 on VT's "offers" list, according to 247's rankings data. So, it's not that inconceivable that the hypothetical 15th guy out of 20 on VT's board has the green light early. (Side note: VT's board may have Jalen much higher, but he's not the only example of 3-star that VT has taken early with a dozen or so players with offers ranked higher).

Based on the fact VT does in fact take lower recruits early, I think Orion probably has some basic assumptions right. The players are tiered. In the hypothetical list of 20 recruits and 3 open spots, let's assume there are 4 tiers.

The top tier consists of players that are probably mostly reaches for VT, we'll recruit them hard and they'll always have a commitable offer regardless of who has already committed, but realistically, VT will have a hard time getting any one of them. They'll recruit them hard and hopefully, it will work out that at least one signs.

The 2nd tier consists of players that VT has a real good shot at getting, but they'll have to battle schools like UNC/Miami/UTenn. These players will have always have a commitable offer until all 3 spots are filled. Once filled, their offer is no longer commitable.

The 3rd tier consists of players that VT probably should land, but they'll have to battle the likes of Pitt/BC/UK to get. If a player in this tier expresses a bona fide interest to commit early, that player will have an option for a commitable offer early, and VT will extend a commitable offer. Once one of the players in this tier commits, the rest of the tier will not be extended a commitable offer until later in the recruiting season, and only if the likelihood of getting players in the top two tiers has become low. An early commitment at this level allows VT to focus on the first two tiers to fill those last two open slots.

The 4th tier consists of players that VT would consider developmental prospects that VT should be able to pick up without much competition. The players do not have a commitable offer early, and would not get one until late in the recruiting season and much of the first 3 tiers have committed elsewhere.

Of course, decommitments are always on the table so even if VT would need to keep tabs on all 4 tiers through out the process, no matter who is committed.

TL;DR:
There are 4 tiers:
1st tier = always commitable
2nd tier = commitable until all slots filled
3rd tier = option of early commitment; commitable when things don't work out with top 2 tiers
4th tier = no option of early commitment; commitable when things don't work out with top 3 tiers

Is this reality? I obviously don't know, I'm not privy to any insider info. But the reality is that VT does take lower tier players early, and thus some of these lower tier players must have at least an option to get a commitable offer.

It's worth noting that the article is only discussing the 247 service ratings and not the composite. For instance, Brandon Campbell was re-rated from 90 to 87, but his overall composite score is still 0.8968, while Dematrius Davis went from a 92 to 93 grade by 247 and his composite went from 0.9438 to 0.9492. The article makes a big deal about Campbell dropping from a 4* to a 3*, but the other services either haven't updated to reflect that yet or don't see it the same way

edit: 247 dropped Jack Hollifield from 92 to 87 simply because they decided to label him ILB instead of ATH

What changed? I've only found a fake account was a cause for change... I don't understand how you go from 226 to 11 nationally. If that's the case seems like the system was really broke, or is now.

BC's ego is going to take a hit. He was twitter proud to be a 247 top player.

Best "87" rated RB I've ever seen.

It has to be a sign. 85-87 is Techs sweet spot it seems.

BC committed to the good guys, confirmed.

fwiw with Henderson, the composite went from #101 to #27 which is a little more understandable. 247 as a service bumped him from a 90 to a 97 after his junior season, and that put them more in line with the other services.

I don't understand how you go from 226 to 11 nationally.

Watch his tape and you'll understand.

That's no joke. He is a legit stud. I did watch his tape and find myself thinking, him dropping the ball the second he crossed the goal line the way he does would probably cause Fu to implode if he played for us.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time worrying about it.

No can do bro. I have a sickness. I believe....I believe that.....I believe that we will........I believe that we will recruit again. I can't help it. I grew up in Blacksburg. I sold cokes at the games. I have been to a million games. I love VT. I want, more than anything, to be able to recruit like a great team. I acknowledge what the reality is, but I am ready to be hurt again, and again. I can't help it. Its a disease. It must be. #go hookies, #go VTU #/s #whateverittakes

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

Wiggles like RMF34, Runs like D. Wilson - he looks legit awesome. Truly wish he'd commit to us!

Edit: Not to go too over the top with the hyperbole here, but actually more like Kevin jones running style than Ry Will or D. Wil.

Henderson is the best RB to come out of the state in a while. Better than Ford, Slade, and Tyree in my opinion. We probably are going to get big timed here, but man he is an instant game changer.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Yeah you could even include Derrick Green and Laborn in there as well. Hopefully we can make up some ground because he would change our program similar to the level Ryan Williams, and David Wilson each did.

We need someone good to commit

it's always good news when someone commits to the hokies

So Diethorn has a good post, so maybe some good news happening.

Good chance it's referencing Landyn Watson and Latrelle Neville announcing they're taking an OV the same weekend as DD in June.

EDIT: Amari Huggins-Bruce coming that weekend as well. Gonna be a big one.

Gonna be a big one

Add another North Shore offer to the list

Is North Shore a private school that ends up consolidating talent or are all the refineries down there pumping something in the water that makes North Shore some breeding ground for talent?

Sheesh... All these Texas recruits. Fuente and co. are probably setting things up so that when the next Big 12 opening comes up Fuente can take his staff and all the players with him. /S

Seriously though... It's quite refreshing to see Fuente and co. learning to be comfortable with who they are all while expanding the footprint of VT. I'm excited that he's reaching out to big time recruits in the heart of Big 12 country!

Is it basketball season yet?

Nothing is set in stone until the ink has dried, but it's hard not to be optimistic about our momentum in TX for 2021. With the end of the last cycle and our momentum with DD it is starting to feel like a realistic possibility.

yea, the optimism has be felt with DD on board. That's an elite get and it seems he has the making of a leader and an influencer. I'm guessing VT's next class will be good, and it'll be because of the TX2VT movement with DD leading the way.

Also, it's worth noting that type of character makes for a great Quarterback. Looking forward to his days behind center.
