The Hokies play Wake Forest at Wake Forest tonight at 9PM. The game is on ACCN. Wake is 8-7 overall, 1-4 ACC; 4-2 home overall, 0-2 home ACC. 4 of their 7 losses are to ranked teams and a fifth team is receiving votes. Two of their ACC losses are to ranked teams; their one ACC win was a close win at Pittsburgh.
Wake is an older and taller team than the Hokies. Most of the time, the two tallest players on the court will be playing for Wake. And if Nolley is not on the floor, the four tallest player on the court could be Demon Deacons. It would really be helpful tonight if Ojiako could play significant minutes.
Wake shoots 44% overall and 39% from 3. About 25% of their shots are from beyond the arc; they make about 6 threes per game. In spite of their height, they are only outrebounding their opponents by 0.4 rebounds per game.
They play a lot of players; 10 players are averaging over 10 minutes per game. Wake is near the top of the league in FT's per game averaging 17 made and 22 attempted per game. They have made more FT's than we have attempted. Will be an interesting match up between the team that commits very few fouls per game and the team that shoots the most foul shots per game. If we can keep from fouling and keep them off the line, that would have a big impact on their offense, 17 of the 70 pts/game are from FTs. They are also a team that commits a lot of fouls. Four players average 3 or more fouls per game; and they have had four players foul out of an ACC game. They average 10 assists and 17 TO per game.
Stats for the stats guys:
Looking at the records might lead you to believe this will be an easy win; but this is an away game against an ACC team. Wake was the only team picked to finish below the Hokies this year; but this is a game to be very cautious about. Wake has played a much tougher schedule than the Hokies and have more experience and more height than the Hokies. It will be interesting to see what kind of defense CMY brings out for this game. Wake has a 7 footer inside and has a couple of guys who can make 3s. Childress is their primary threat from 3; but everyone on the team except Massoud has scored from 3. As CMY says, if we shoot well from 3, we win. We should be the quicker team. Hopefully, we can keep Wake off balance on defense. If Nolley has another good game and at least one other player shoots well, this should be a win. If Nolley is not shart, someone else (Radford?, Cone?) is going to have to step up in a big way.
