"TNT" is aweome! That has to become a thing for the D-Line now.

Yeah, but what is #LPG?
There are just under 4 liters per gallon
There are 4 players on the defensive line, sometimes less
We need a player who can be as good as the last DL to wear #4
It all makes sense now

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Assuming the NCAA allows him to come in and immediately play, he may be the single most important player to our 2020 success. We are in good shape at almost every position but need play makers at DE!

He's a grad transfer so he's immediately eligible wherever he goes.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Assuming the NCAA allows him to come in and immediately play

have you learned nothing from our dealings with the NCAA? He'll pick Tech, earn a starting spot, and take up all the first team reps only for the NCAA to announce that he had questionable show-and-tell scores on his kindergarten transcript and will have to sit the season out.

This would be a huge pick up... my understanding was OSU and UNC were initial front runners to land him but somehow couldn't make the numbers work, even though the numbers always work

You have to rememeber math is really hard for UNC

Really like this guy, he's a TD machine in his tape. His coach is Beau Davidson's brother.

6'7"! At some point is there such a thing as too tall for the OL? When does it become a leverage problem or a QB can't see a damn thing problem? I would think a 6'2" 300 lb DT would have an easy time getting under a 6'7" OT's pads and moving him around.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

6-7 normally won't be playing inside. You use that frame to hold the edge.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

He is going to be enormous if he takes the nutrition and lifting seriously at the next level. As a person that is 6'7 258 is no where near to what he could build in muscle/mass while staying light on his feet.

Current Hokie OT Luke Tenuta is 6'7". 2020 signee Parker Clements is 6'7". NFL HOF OT Jonathan Ogden is 6'9".

it's uncommon because people that size are uncommon.

I remember when Joe Jacoby was considered a giant at 300 lbs.

I'm guessing 6'7" is just the new 6'4".

This guy looks like an 80s teen movie villain/bully. Complete with the perfect name. Only better name for that role is Brody.

That said, I want that personality on the OL or DL.

He's absolutely worn roller blades and jumped over a work truck while making fun of the new kid.

Slightly off topic, but Scott Loeffler was on the same JetBlue flight as I was from Ft. Myers to Boston last night. I guess Bowling Green doesn't have a private plane for recruiting.

Interesting, did you get a chance to strike up conversation

No, I honestly wasn't 100% sure of who he was, as he apparently did not have any Bowling Green gear on. It was one of those "waaaait, I recognize that guy, where have I seen him before?" things. Only later did I look up his picture, and knew that was actually him.

last night

I assume it was 3:30 AM, Loeffler hadn't slept for days and eyes were the color of beets.

Actually, he looked as bright-eyed, carefree, and smiling as I'd ever seen him. Maybe that helped throw me off for a bit. Plus, we landed at 8:30.

Maybe coaching at that level suits him. You generally don't see D1 football coaches fly into Boston to recruit. This is not exactly a hotbed of high school talent up here, unless you're talking hockey or lacrosse.

...so he is a cokehead...I hear your code

Just received an offer from Lecht.

Plays QB at a Richmond Co, believe VT offered as either an athlete or running back. UNC offered as a DB. His dad played at UNC. Not a surprise he committed once UNC offered.

Any time the "insiders" hype up a "big weekend" there is basically a 10% chance anything actually happens

If we land Roche and get him enrolled early, that would be absolutely enormous. I'm hoping that's what it is.

My expectations are conditioned to be so low I'm not even upset. It's mostly just numb when we miss on guys.

Can't get upset about the sun rising in the east.

Guessing the big news was that Roche came to VT for a visit.

I know, was just curious if we found out what it was

On another note, have we ever done this uniform combo before? I actually really like the all white with the metallic orange helmet. ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Without doing any research i would guess we lost a game against ECU with that combo and are too embarrassed to wear it again. Or might just be because many including myself unofficially consider maroon to be more of our primary color and orange our secondary/ highlight color sans orange effect or whiteout.

Hokie Club member since 2017

We can't go tossing colors where we lost games we shouldn't have.

Would rule out way too many combinations.

I don't disagree but I think there's a bit of superstition creep sometimes in sports like when the Nats only wore their home alternate blues in the world series

Hokie Club member since 2017

I personally believe that the harder you work, the luckier you get.

We wore maroon pants for that monstrosity of a game.

I'm pretty sure Orange/White/White hasn't been worn by us since the orange bowl against Stanford.

Chrome Orange/White/White has not been done yet.

Chrome Orange with white face mask hasn't been done with any uniform combo yet.

Hokies made the top-15 for TreVeyon Henderson -- interesting note that he didn't list a position for us?? very highly rated player from VA, big boy offer list. Interesting to note that Zohn had been listed as lead recruiter and we still made the top-15 after he was let go

Not sure what just happened. Had a bunch of schools pulled up and my iPad crashed and I lost them all. Will put together another post after yard work today. But schools that pop out are Clemson, UNC, soon to be LOLUVA, Oregon, Oklahoma State, FSU among others. This doesn't include the obvious LSU, BAMA, Texas, Texas AM, anOSU.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I've just seen Bama's which has the nice movie theatre stadium style seating. I know a ton of schools have nice Team Meeting rooms, i just hadn't seen any position meeting rooms that really made me go "oh shit"

Gobble Till You Wobble

Edit: Add Clemson to that list. Only issue with those seats is i know half of our asses would have been knocked out during 6am film study with those chairs haha

Gobble Till You Wobble

My 2 cents on a meeting room- don't show the recruits our meeting room if it is not high end. Highlight our other assets. Hell, I a guy is only coming here for the meeting room, I don't think he is a DOG we need anyway. Damn, are young men interested in women? Meeting rooms, what the hell?

I understand needing new facilities, but not everything has to be the Ritz. We certainly are not going to see that much of an improvement in recruits playing directional schools, liberty and rhode island, Young men that are the best want to play the best. We are not in that conversation , and it will be a while before we get there. Hell, we can beat Clemson to get out of our conference , and so the ritz is not warranted.
I still plan to donate, buy season tickets and also to increase our donation this year. we all certainly need to help, but we are not ALABAMA.

Yeah, I kinda don't get meeting rooms. Maybe one nice room for the entire team, but if I was a recruit, I'd care most about the gym, practice facilities, stadium, and locker room. I wouldn't care if the meeting rooms were "pretty" it's effing football, make it look industrial, like you're going to freaking WORK.

Having said that, I think we should put a mural of the Hokie Bird choking the shit out of the Clemson tiger in some or all of our meeting spaces.

Here's Clemson's RB room
EDIT: and ours circa 2015?

Let's Go

HOKIES

If we are already doing the makeover, if tiered seating and some movie theater chairs w/ a cup holder make the difference I don't see that costing too much more in the grand scheme of the bottom line.

By the renderings we already have prior RB greats on the wall, I assume we already have a projector. Look I get it, it's a stupid meeting room, but if this is what the best has then just fall in line.

I count 14 seats in the Clemson RB room. That's a lot of dudes not getting touches. Their transfer portal must be awfully busy.

Must be a culture issue

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

The 2 running back rooms differentiate those who came to play football from those who came to play skool. Clearly the Hokies look like they are playing skool.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

*UNC has left the chat

Can't leave the chat if you never entered it

There was a lot of chatter about how invested the staff was into the 2021 class as a way of explaining away the underwhelming results for the 2020 class. Allegedly, they were focused on putting time and resources into 2021 when 2020 appeared to not be developing as expected.

What remains to be seen is how much coaching changes (basically Wiles, maybe Zohn) will change that narrative. But it would be awfully frustrating if the staff underachieves again in 2021 because of these changes. Most big time programs don't seem to need to give coaches a year or two to figure it out when it comes to recruiting - I hope that's the case for Tech this time around. We've seen what happens when multiple subpar classes come in back to back - we get the end of Frank's tenure.

I honestly don't get this. I wish Burden and Wiles the best of course, but to think they would have some legit swing in how 2021 recruiting stacks up is borderline ridiculous. Neither had landed big recruits and again are solid coaches, but I don't see a few small position coach changes (welcome to college football) being material here.

Wiles' list of recruits out of Florida over the years is pretty long and pretty distinguished. I think he'll be missed; it's just a matter of how much.

Focused entirely on the potential negative without the flip side of what was missed with Wiles which is documented misses on big time d-line recruits time after time. Charlie is a good coach, but history means zero - current success does in this business.

I disagree - it was time to change and the recruit talent trend was clearly down on the d-line (especially end) and It wasn't like Charlie didn't have some wins. He just didn't have enough of the right ones and more of his wins weren't in recent years. Our D line success was capped with that narrative unless changes were made.

Who exactly is focused on the negative here?

That Wiles and Burden will be missed from a recruiting standpoint - that statement says there is a foregone conclusion that we are taking a step backwards. I'm simply stating I disagree and don't think they will be missed at all - from a current recruiting standpoint. I'm not saying they are terrible or bad coaches - not at all. I'm simply saying I think as the current situation presents I think there is significantly more upside/positive without them than with them.

Missing the irony, I see.

"Documented misses...time after time" (who doesn't? And his primary recruiting responsibility was Florida, not DL)

"History means zero" (so which is it? He hadn't landed big recruits or he had but it means nothing?)

"Recruit trend talent was clearly down on the DL (especially end)" (Even though the highest rated recruit for 2020 was a DE?)

No, no negativity there...

I was simply disagreeing with your comment that Wiles didn't land big recruits because it's factually incorrect. Wiles was the 22nd ranked recruiter in the ACC by 247 for the '19 class. Just among the contributors on the 2019 roster recruited by Wiles:

Hendon Hooker
Keyshawn King
James Mitchell
Alan Tisdale
Dashawn Crawford
Dalton Keene

It's okay to think the "grass is greener" and have wishful thinking optimism. But don't confuse them for facts in order to justify them.

Wiles was a solid recruiter. Period. And he will likely be a solid recruiter at NC St - and the relationships he established (particularly in Florida) will move from VT to NC St to some degree (and probably not insignificantly).

I didn't comment on Burden, however he was a solid recruiter as well. But his recruiting relationships aren't as deep or distant, so the impact of his loss may not be particularly consequential.

classic example of the high-floor recruiter that you know vs the potentially higher ceiling of the guy you don't know yet.

It's stupid to say at this point that we definitely won't miss Wiles from a recruiting standpoint because he was limiting us, but it's equally stupid to say that we'll definitely miss Wiles from a recruiting standpoint because he was irreplaceable.

We just don't know.

Exactly....and isn't much different from what I said initially.

"Wiles' list of recruits out of Florida over the years is pretty long and pretty distinguished. I think he'll be missed; it's just a matter of how much."

big misconception regarding position coaches being primarily accountable for recruiting their position groups, but there's definitely a little bit of crossover there. or there ought to be, at least.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

There is definitely some crossover. But they recruit not just individual players in their geographical responsibility. They build relationships with programs, coaches, administrators, etc in the area.

VPISU making a comeback is one of the most beautiful things. Thank you Twitter for elongating messages

Since I didn't see last year - have recruits been tweeting "blessed to receive an offer from VT" last year and the years prior? Do we know if they do that for all P5 offers? DD seems to actually be excited about Tech. Does it seem like there's a more positive Tech vibe from recruits?

It's pretty commonplace for recruits to say that exact/similar line for every offer/big offer they receive.

Yes, Yes, DD is "actually excited" because he is comitted at this time and not just receiving an offer, there is at least a more positive Tech vibe coming out of Texas.

"Actually excited" may not have been the best wording. I guess the guys like him and Alec Bryant who seem to be trying to recruit other guys and get VT stuff out there seem more "excited" about building something here to me.

No worries. There's always at least a few that really try to push with recruiting other guys each year.

I haven't combed through the roster thoroughly (I'm sure some of you have), but what are your major positions of need for the 2021 class?

My big priorities

DT - we have the young, solid DT's to survive the next two years for sure. However, this class will be a key litmus test on how well we can recruit the taller, bigger DT's we've been hearing about. Landing a Tyleik Williams could be huge.

CB - we haven't been recruiting a lot of pure corners, and we could lose both starting corners after next season, plus Brion Murray, though I only expect Farley to leave early.

DE - don't need a ton after landing Bryant, Wooten, and Beadles late, but we are in on some real dudes early. Another chance to prove we are serious about upgrading DL recruiting.

LB - logjams dissipate quickly with college turnover, we saw this with our deep 2016 DT group turn to dust by 2018.

OL - every other year is generally a key OL year. But should take a few in each class anyway.

QB - Dematrius pls. but really, i'd rather have one too many QBs than one too few, and we didn't take any in 2020 (rip ham oink we hardly knew ye) because of him

RB - I would like to see a high-impact recruit come in. We reshaped the room with the 2020 class, but there is limited eligibility remaining for Lee, Herbert, and Blackshear moving forward, and Herbert will be gone by the time any 2021 recruits hit campus.

TE - I know we just took Pene in 2020 but h's entirely an unknown developmental project at this point. I know Gallo + Mitchell profiles as a strong group, but it can turn over pretty quickly and I don't think we have that "next sure thing" after Gallo. Deiullis only played in four games in 2019.

DT - strong agree here for 2021.

LB - strong agree here. please please please don't make us have to start over with true freshmen after Dax and Ashby

Edit: strong agree on CB/DB as well

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

RB- Need an impact guy King and Gary will be in their third year but its always good to have options considering the RB room this year is so grad transfer heavy we will need one or two but I'd like to see a impact guy to go along with DD at QB

OL- Always need one or two per class could hopefully get a gem or two

DT- Desperately need depth in the interior and with new DL coaches who want bigger bodies we dont have those so big need to me

CB- Risky to not go for talented CBs with Farley and Watts both eligible to leave next year another big season by either and we would be without them for their last year. Havent heard alot about the guys behind them either.

LB- after the attrition this offseason could use one or two big hits in this cycle.

WR- Always add a good playmaking WR with every class dunno if we need to worry about the draft drawing anyone out next year but just in case.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Watts both eligible to leave next year

Guessing you meant Waller

Thanks honestly forgot the name there and remembered it was a W so went with the first one

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

OL- Always need one or two per class could hopefully get a gem or two

I would say always need 4-5 per class. For DL, you want to get a full two-deep every two years, to account for the ones that just don't pan out. I would think that would apply to the OL as well.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Pertaining to CBs- this is why we need to use every ounce of effort to land Tony Grimes. He will start immediately and especially if Farley and Waller improve even more than they already have....he will be able to see the work that Prieleou has put in to take them to the next level. Chatman and him know each other as well.

"Can't argue with that logic" - Rick Sanchez

I will be ecstatic and extremely surprised if we pull Grimes at this point. I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Not getting my hopes up....been there before. Just saying need to use that a point to him and the immediate impact he would make on the field.

My kid said Dabo was in Princess Anne to visit Grimes earlier this week.

I'm just here to sling some legs

add WR there, Chris. Would have been really nice to see Jalin Hyatt coming into the program -- just further underscores why us rationalizing recruits picking a different school based on perceived playing time or strength of the room isn't always a great excuse.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I imagine we will be taking 1-2 WR than we originally planned this cycle. I agree on Hyatt as well. He is a lightning fast playmaker, and would have likely been a major factor in our offense.

He's probably 15. I think he'll get bigger.

There was a corner from the 757 that was that big in 9th grade and he was about that big when he graduated too.

Shit, I stopped growing in 8th grade, at 6'1''. Went from being the tallest motherfucker in my grade to average height, lol

Damn. I have the same story (except 5'10" and I stopped in 7th grade). It totally ruined my shot at playing basketball in HS. I didnt have any guard skills.

No, at 6'1" in 8th grade, I was the big man.... but then at 6'1'' in 12th grade, i was pretty average height

No, what I meant was, 6'1" lwas average height in 12th grade at your school? 6'1" is pretty tall.

The average height for men has been tracked over the years and has been increasing. Looking at the broad average across the United States, the National Center for Health Statistics has reported that the average height for an adult male is 69.1 inches (175.4 centimeters), or roughly 5 feet 9 inches. This data was compiled as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted from 2007 to 2010.

Maybe in basketball terms lol. I highly doubt any high school in the country is averaging 6'1 for male height.

Yes, there are boys who don't get any bigger after 9th grade. The vast, vast majority do however.

But hey never miss an opportunity to note the glass is 2% empty...

HOLY SHIT

You, Melancholy Marc, getting on anyone for taking a negative point of view, is one of the most darkly ironically funny things I've ever read on this site.

This would be like if vtkey told someone to "stop defending Fuente", or if Alum07 admonished folks to "stop posting emotionally" during a game thread, or if dcwilson40 was like "it's not what you say, it's how you say it"...

Who are you?
And what have you done with marcb2???

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Do I have a thing? I don't think I have a thing. I mean, I have a thing...it's not like a HUGE thing by any means, but it's certainly serviceable. Hell, some would say it's a good ol thing.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I'm not gonna touch that...

If dcwilson40 were to say "it's not what you say, it's how you say it", then that comment would deserve to go plaid, IM(ns)HO.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

You'd be surprised how many positive posts I write.

But what I don't do is join the pollyanna parade.

I mean, literally for years I've been saying money, not coaches or wins or sexy offensive schemes, drives recruiting and VT's lack of financial resources was a steep hill to climb. And even if the face of evidence clearly supporting this, folks continued to deny it . Now folks are beginning to see the 800 pound gorilla in the room.

Was I being negative all of these years or just being realistic?

If you notice, I rarely complain about the stuff the usual keyboard warriors complain about. I may point out a player or coaches flaws as I see them, but I usually also note their strengths as well - and rarely resort to the hyperbolic negative so common here and say such and such coach should be fired or the team sucks or the sky is falling because some top 100 recruit picked somebody else over VT.

Most importantly I trust my eyes and knowledge and refuse to succumb to dumbed down media conventional wisdom and fan Schizophrenic bandwagon groupthink when I think it's wrong - be it negative or positive.

I don't post all that much and I definitely don't have time to read all the posts on this site but I've found myself coming across your posts from time to time and almost always agreeing with them. I haven't read them as negative; I actually find them very measured and realistic. I've thought about commenting on one of your posts in the past to mention this ... just never had, but this seems like as good a time as any to do so.

He probably does, too.

I'm guessing roster size makes it a lot easier to keep up with basketball families than football.

The vibe from this photo is Fuente having to do damage control to prevent further player attrition but who knows.

FFS. They don't have to post these photos. If they were really scrambling around to keep a specific player, do you really thing they'd post the pic of it? They're selling an image. Not everything needs to be doom and gloom.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Fuente told her he would rather "go to work" than post it himself.

Proud author of one plaid comment.

There are those who think Fuente deserves the benefit of the doubt going into the second straight year of double digit transfers and early exits. I just don't happen to be one of them.

It's a concern that Tech has the third most transfers of any P5 school, and doesn't exactly have the incoming recruiting help to fill those holes. It sets up for a third straight year of "well we are young". And it's a further indictment that your recruiting evaluations of those outgoing transfers were flawed.

This is what I believe is called a false comparison. You're comparing us to other schools based solely on transfers, as if all other things are equal. Are all other schools only graduating 5 seniors, only one of which was a starter (low attrition)? Do any other schools have low to non-existent draft entrees (low attrition)? Are all other schools returning 18 starters this year, 12 of which will return in 2021 (potentially very long path to starting/playing time)?

Then there's also the fact that some of these guys probably were recruiting misses that weren't ever going to see playing time. If that's the case, make that argument, which, considering how many stats last year's transfers out had, seems to be valid.

Well if he were looking solely at transfers without comparison then people would likely be disappointed that he came to such a conclusion in a vacuum.

At the end of the day, VT is a P-5 program with playoff aspirations, like many other P-5 school. So the comparisons are warranted in that regard. Couple that with the fact that Clemson was an extremely young team this year, as were a whole handful of other non playoff schools.

Simply put, you cannot grow into one of those programs (a playoff challenger) when the optics are always suspect (people can come to any conclusions they want to about what is going on, but the optics haven't been great regardless of your conclusion), when you are swinging and missing on an entire recruiting cycle (I do think there is a diamond or two in the rough), when you simply can't seem to keep players around (the narrative about them being buried on the depth chart are O&M glasses related IMO), and when you still haven't shown that you can manage a P-5 roster well (player development, the QB situation, the perpetual state of youth in the program, etc.)

Is it basketball season yet?

I agree with this - it's a more sound argument than "we have too many transfers."

Even though Clemson was young, did they have other attrition? Since we only had the 5 seniors and no anticipated draft enrollees, that would have given us a class of 5.

The other thing I'd point out is that at the end of 2017, we had guys who wanted to throw the Marshall game so they wouldn't "have" to go to a bowl game. Not sure how many there were, but count me as glad they apparently are gone - so if that's why we had high attrition last year, I'm okay with it. This year is a different story. I don't know what to make of it, but I'll be a lot more worried if it happens again next year.

I certainly agree with all of this. I just don't know how everyone (read recruits, HS coaches, parents) interpret the optics that have come out of the VT football program since Fuente arrived, specifically as it relates to all things related to roster management. I know first hand that there are a number of VHSL coaches who are are watching at arms length with a bit of skepticism.

Is it basketball season yet?

I totally get it. I talk a lot about the lens through which we look at things. Clearly some people on here look at it as mostly unproductive people leaving, so no big deal. Other people on here look at it as transfers out looks bad. And I forget sometimes that I have to remember that what the recruits see and perceive is very important.

I agree that a lot of our conclusions have heavy O&M bias. But honestly looking back on the players who have transferred out over the past 3 years, who do you/we think would have actually helped our team and had significant playing time or impact? Not counting Trevon Hill since he was kicked off the team. JJ? I would take HH over JJ 10 times out of 10. Savoy and Cunningham had quite literally been passed on the depth chart by Grimsley and Keene and then both of which have done absolutely nothing at their next destinations, Savoy had to switch positions multiple times and is now transferring again. Porcher had literally been passed by Crawford and the two freshmen DTs. Proctor and Glaze couldn't have been passed on the depth chart because they were never even on it to begin with. Caleb Steward would have never played a significant snap in his career. I personally liked McClease a lot but also think he is easily replaceable with these other RBs we have coming in. D'andre Plantin had literally been passed on the depth chart. Kearney was already behind on the depth chart from the get from from Ashby and Dax and knew he would never start unless there were injuries. Watts was terrible and literally got passed by Waller and I had heard he was already passed by Chatman in the spring too. The only possibilities I see of players who could have actually helped us were Cam Goode(unique situation leaving after one workout), Kumah and Hazelton. The latter two are both essentially the same player, really good at jump balls inside the 20 but do nothing else for you outside of that. I did like Kumah's blocking so hated losing that but much like Hazleton, when did he ever catch passes that weren't fades? I can literally only think of two catches in his career. The TD against Ok State in the bowl game and the catch and run TD against FSU.

I am entirely open to hearing opinions on the subject of whether or not these transfers are hurting us. But as far as I can tell, the truth is, most of them were not significant pieces of our team.

"These people are losing their minds" - Mike Patrick

Yup

I would agree with all of this, but its viewing things in a bit of a vacuum. What I think people are missing is that it takes more than "starters" or even "contributors" to make a program great. There has to be layered depth where quality players are on Special Teams, where quality players are constantly pushing the starters, where quality players can step in if there's an injury, and where quality "2's" are regularly going against the "1's" in practice. When there is regular turnover you are always young in one or all of those areas, and that is where VT finds itself - in a state of being perpetually young.

Is it basketball season yet?

Portal transfers were part of our depth. And we are now weaker, some of the portal players had some solid minutes, take ladler as one that made 2 overtime plays to win the UNC game. Many of these guys contributed, and I would like to know the coaches answer for their replacements.

You mention Savoy switching positions multiple times. And what other Hokie do we know of who bounced around positions before finally sticking at one and having a great redshirt senior year and going into the NFL? What about Justin Hamilton?

Just because a player isn't getting playing time right now, even as a junior, doesn't mean the coaches shouldn't be trying to keep them on the team and find a place where they work. No, there wasn't a portal when Beamer was the coach, but there were still grad transfers. And plenty of Hokies stuck it out until their redshirt junior or redshirt senior years before meaningfully contributing. Even plenty of guys stuck around and just wound up being high-quality backups. It's those kind of things that we're not getting if players keep transferring out in high numbers. Guys who might not be starting, or even playing right now, but who could put it all together and be meaningful contributors or even just locker room leaders their senior or redshirt senior years are more likely to help us win than continually trying to plug holes in the depth chart with freshmen.

Not every player who could be a great contributor will do that early in their careers. It is the job of the coaching staff to see that those guys stick around and develop into quality players, not to run them off and try to find a better 3-star recruit to stick in their place.

You're assuming that the coaching staff is running all of them off. There are players today who think they should be getting playing time or else they're going somewhere else. It's not just football players who think this way, but we have lots of interweb places where the info is on display.

Nope, VT is not a unicorn. Hate to break it to you. Yes, there are other schools with few upperclassmen, etc, etc, etc.

Which ones?

Get Angry, Bud!

IIRC, VT had the fewest seniors and the third most frosh on its roster in FBS last year. I don't see how it can get much younger than that.

Shockingly such a young team had five P5 games go down to the last minute, lost 3 of those 5 games in the last minute - yet had the opportunity late with lead to put 4 of the 5 away (including all 3 losses) but came up short both offensively and defensively.

Many fans drastically underestimate the value of mental and physical maturity (and also injuries). When the margin of error gets slimmer ever year for teams not named Alabama, Clemson, Ohio St and a few others, experience and physical maturity can mean +/- 1 or 2 wins (or more).

Don't be surprised if in two years, this team which couldn't put wins away late, suddenly is a team that just simply puts it foot on the gas in the fourth quarter.

Just doing a quick and dirty test of this theory with 2019 teams, using this chart from Phil Steele with experience points: https://philsteele.com/2019/07/03/2019-experience-chart-pg-29-of-2019-co...

Oregon: 3-2 in close games (12-2 overall; notably, they had a chance to bury Auburn but couldn't)
Texas St: 2-1 in close games (3-9 overall)
ULM: 3-3 in close games (5-7 overall
Hawaii: 4-1 in close games (10-5 overall)
Liberty: 3-1 in close games (8-5 overall)

The 5 least experienced teams:

UAB: 3-1 in close games (9-5 overall)
GT: 3-2 in close games (3-9 overall)
ODU: 1-3 in close games (1-11 overall)
Fresno St: 2-5 in close games (4-8 overall)
UMass: 1-0 in close games (1-11 overall)

I don't have the time to do a full deep dive into this. Generally performance in close games in the NFL is a function of luck and not necessarily a learned skill. It might be different in college. Michigan was 2-1 in one-score games last year and their experience score was similar to VT. Baylor was 5-2 in one-score games. The best way to win close games is to not be in close games in the first place, so things like the ref blowing the whistle and cancelling out a game-ending fumble don't happen.

If I had a little more time I'd look just at returning senior starters. ULM had 15 senior starters and went just .500 in one score games, but they also weren't that good.

Not all 1 score games are equal. I didn't include the Boston College game even though it was a one score game technically. VT gave that game away too but in a totally different way and VT was never really in position to take the lead after midway-ish of the 2nd quarter.

The real point is VT had the lead/or tied and the ball fairly late in the 4th quarter in 4 games (Miami, Notre Dame, UVa, Kentucky) and lost 3 of them - and damn near lost (or went to OT) in the 4th one.

The North Carolina game was two teams is similar straits - neither not really knowing yet how to put a game away - and either could have won it in regulation.

Last I heard we are still in a good spot with Brandon Campbell, but y'all need to prepare yourselves for the big dog parade. Florida and Alabama offered in the last two days. I doubt they will be the last.

Would love to get an early commitment but doesn't seem that's the way it's gonna be another long drawn out thing. Fuente needs to hit on one of these guys badly

I doubt hitting on them will work, and will likely get him in Sandusky-type trouble.

Now, he should definitely hit on the moms though.

I don't care for parades but I expect I would like dog parades.

?????

We have to get a guy like Campbell on board by the spring. If we don't land either him, Treveyon Henderson, or Malik Newton this next cycle I will have a hard time believing we will ever land an elite back. Sat with Treyveyon's HS coach yesterday, got calls from Ohio State and Michigan while we were talking. Kid is a top-50 recruit and would be an absolute coup to get him to Blacksburg.

Wasnt Saban in town as well this week?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yes. And Harbaugh was a month ago or so.

Do you live in Hopewell?

Newton is very underrated IMO. His performance on both sides in the state title game was eye opening. He's got vision and power as a back and made two crazy one handed grabs. 1 a TD reception and the other an interception on defense. Either of them could have been SC top 10 plays. "Virginia Tech University" ... *cringe*

There were about 5 of those posted. Oh well, they'll learn it's Virginia Tech, VPISU, VPI, or VT at some point

As long as its not VAAA tech made me want to punch the announcer through the TV every time.

I'm over the VTU reference and even Vah Tech.

During the basketball game, one of the commentators said "Hoks", that is a no no.

Oh, I LOATHE Vah-Tech.

With the late National Signing Day a week away now, what 2020 recruits do we still really have a shot at? I know DJ Lundy is essentially down to us and Georgia, but are there any other decisions we're waiting on?

Gobble Till You Wobble

Newly offered WR Dallan Wright from SC. Potentially CB Rashad Battle if we can get a visit this weekend.
Other than that it looks like Grad Transfer Obi Obialo is a top target to replace Hazelton and is visiting this week. Maybe bring Xavier Kelly from Clemson in if there is mutual interest.
Other than that looks like coaches are on to 2021.

Lundy is now taking an official to FSU. Before this news I think we were the backup option for him if UGA can't take him at the last minute, but now I think this puts us squarely in third. Tallahassee is close to where he lives in Georgia and proximity has been a key part of his recruitment. I would absolutely LOVE to add this kid, but it's looking like we need him to not be a take for either school at this point to land him.

Clemson just picked up 4 Top 120 kids the last 3 days for 2021. The rich get richer. We play in the same conference, we need to up our game to compete. It's unreal.

It's good for recruiting to play in the National Championship game.

We should try that

El. Psy. Kongroo.

We are. It's hard to get to that level. It's not like we're saying "mmmm nah it's ok. We don't want to compete :) ".

Yes ok great. How would you up our game? Pay for better coaches and facilities? What money do we have to do that? Get bag men for shady-characters to come play for us?

Pray, what would YOU do differently since all you do is B&M all day about us not being at Clemsons level?

Hazleton committed to Missouri? Anyone know why?

Brand new coach coming in and has no allegiance to last years' starters? Playing in the SEC? Best bag men? Who knows?

In his situation, you're looking to be the big fish in a small pond to showcase your skills for scouts. Hard to say that's Missouri consider who you have to play and that they just lost their grad transfer starting QB to the draft.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

definitely not sure what their depth chart looks like but i'd assume they sold him on a featured role since his receptions went from 51 to 31 with us last year. now obviously he missed 3 or 4 games but he wants to go somewhere he's more featured to elevate his draft stock i'd assume

If he doesn't improve blocking and catching a ball over the middle, I'm not sure that he'll be improving his draft status too much.

More exposure can be a double-edged sword.

And my gut tells me it won't be friendly to Hazelton.

probably for the locker room culture

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I'm assuming he is highly rated because his body can handles 30-40 more pounds at least. Bede weighs about the same or more than him.

I also don't think he is 6'2". I saw a pic of him next to some other recruits and he looked like a safety. He might be 6', 200lbs.

So apparently 247sports.com has our 2020 class ranked #70, which is the worst of all P5 schools. There are G5 schools with better classes. How do we feel about that generally? Especially with all our losses to the portal (last I checked, VT had worst net in portal of acc teams). Hard to get excited about 2020 at this point :(

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

I've made my opinion well known. The misleading excuse of "small" numbers is just that. We were never going to only take 5 kids to lineup with those "supposed" to leave. That was never the plan. This was always going to be around a 15 person class, so the argument that the coaches only had 5 spots to offer was horseshit all along. Also, top players are not intimidated by VT's young roster that just went 6-7 and 8-5- so the excuse that it's harder to sell playing time is garbage too. 2020 is unacceptable for VT if our intent is to compete in the ACC. It's simply not. Now, is it an anomaly? or are we struggling to sell the program and connect with the better players? And before people chime in with "a bunch of 4 stars in 18/19 classes", well some of them have already left. It's a big problem, IMO.

Out of curiosity - do you think that Foster's retirement announcement and us not choosing one until December (as well as late announcements on other defensive staff) affected our ability to secure commitments (and thus signees)?

I haven't paid as much attention to the recruits we tried to get and missed at, so wasn't sure if that has been a factor or not.

If we get a really good 2021 class, will you feel better about the coaches' abilities to recruit? Also, we have a LOT of new staff on board, with some of the ones who were let go apparently because of recruiting - do you feel the replacements were a positive step in addressing the poor recruiting?

Was Foster's retirement- that was announced just prior to the season (remember is takes YEARS to build relationships with recruits at VT) a difference between the 70th ranked class and a top 25 one? No, not at all, IMO. Foster was never a great recruiter anyway.

This was always going to be around a 15 person class

which would still be the smallest VT football recruiting class since 247 started keeping track and keep telling us how the size of the recruiting class doesn't or shouldn't affect the rank in any given year. if we were pulling in 25 players, our rank would be significantly higher than 70, and you'd be moaning about us having 24 players in the portal instead of 14

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

is 15 kids a small class compared to the full 25? Yep. Is 15 kids so tiny that it causes you to not recruit as well as G5 teams? nope

I think the problem with our staff and a small class is they basically treated it as a punt year. They just brought in what they could added some depth and said "Yeah, we recruited!" A small class should be a blessing to a coaching staff. It shouldn't be lets just go get what we can it should be a hyper focused on some big fish and upgrade at some positions with a sprinkle of the depth players in there.

Look at Clemson. in 2017 a 14 man class - ranked 16th. 2018 - 17 man class ranked 8th. As compared to us 14 man in 2020 - 70th.

Yep and Fuente even said "we were kinda slow on some guys"... If you want to be 7-5, cool. If you want to win the ACC one day, the 2020 class is not acceptable.

you keep saying "small class" is a misleading excuse, but really you just don't want to acknowledge that it definitely has a factor.

do you even have the slightest idea how recruiting rankings work? the number of recruits and the average rating both influence "ranking". We have a higher average recruiting rating than all of the G5 teams above us, and they're only head of us in the ranking because of numbers. do you really think ECU is "outrecruiting us" because they're taking 22 with a 0.8246 average? they have the 63rd ranked class and we have the 70th because for every two kids we're taking this year, they're taking three lower rated ones.

VT's current average is 0.8501 with a current class of 14, which is definitely not great! Compare Maryland's class that averages 0.8559 with 25 recruits. Where does it rank? a whopping 40 spots ahead of us at 30th. negligible difference in average recruit, much bigger class, much higher ranking.

If you want to argue that our "small class" should be more like TCU's (32nd overall, 15 takes, average recruit rating of 0.8853) then I agree but that's a different argument than the one you're making

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Just look at average rating per recruit. It's not good. Throw the numbers out. That's fine with me. Still not good. We did a poor job recruiting in 2020. There is no spin, no justification. Our highest rated player decommitted, and leaving our highest rated player in the 700's range overall. It's not good. Slice the data however you want. In 3 years, when we have huge holes in experience and leadership, everyone will crow "well the 2020 class , something something something excuse".

Our highest rated recruit is, and was, Alec Bryant, and he is #326 nationally.

Sorry I thought he was 2021

I'm not trying to argue this is a good class -- it's not. We failed to close on highly rated players at positions of need. Our average recruit rating is too low for a class of only 14-17. Maybe some will pop, the likelihood is that most won't.

But pretending like the class size doesn't affect our class ranking is stupid and claiming that G5 schools are out-recruiting us is also stupid (and alarmist).

Not to mention that the small class goes hand-in-hand with roster attrition, and you complain about that too.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

1. If your first sentence is true, then you are just trying to argue with me. I never said size wasn't ANY factor. I even clarified that we were never going to take only 5 guys. I said THAT was BS and an excuse. 2. Considering all factors, G5 teams did "out-recuit" us in 2020. Fact. VT - a P5 school typically recruiting in the low 20's-30's dropping 40 spots and hovering around G5 schools means they did a hell of a job, and we didn't by comparison. 3. I complain about ABNORMAL KEY roster attrition. That is a key difference. RS freshman 4 star WR, Starting WR, Best TE, Best RB leave? yeah, as a fan I complain about that.

RS freshman 4 star WR, Starting WR, Best TE, Best RB leave?

RB who has been here 5 years and nothing to gain by staying taking his shot at the NFL? TE who left for the NFL because it is a weak TE class this year? It is hard to complain about those since it is their bodies and chance at a career they are dealing with.
Honestly, the biggest concern out of all of that was Hazelton just because it seemed to come out of nowhere. Y

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

For the millionth time. If we don't need any of these guys that leave, we should be pretty damn good on the field.

I think it's pretty obvious we do need them. But they're not going to be here for a multitude of reasons.

Where did I say we didn't need them? You said you wanted to complain about those guys leaving and I proposed an argument as to why only 1 was worthy of complaining about. Wishing guys would have stayed than going to the NFL is different than complaining about the coaching staff and recruiting.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Don't change the tune on me now, DC!

the entire tone and tenor of your position on this recruiting class on these boards the last several weeks has been that our recruiting class is "not that small" and "might not be so small now"

Regarding "ABNORMAL KEY roster attrition", the comments haven't been "wow this is a lot of abnormal key roster attrition", they've been "our attrition rate is abnormally high" and "player retention issues at a much higher rate than most P5 teams" and "we can't build depth any more" and "VT doesn't have any more attrition than other schools /s"

we easily could have recruited in the 30s just by taking more players in the .85-.86 range. that would have forced more attrition. they go hand in hand. what this class needed was chris tyree and malcolm greene and jaelin hyatt and antwaun powell.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Average recruit ranking, per 247:

2017: 86.13
2018: 87.46
2019: 87.39
2020: 85.01

From 2017-19 they landed 7-8 VA kids. Last year, 1 kid. It's a problem of both quality and quantity. Maybe last year was a blip, or maybe Fuente became toxic to schools where VT used to recruit. We'll know more this year, but you can't hand-wave away concerns because it was a "small class".

i'm not hand-waving away anything. the argument that "small class is a misleading excuse" is bad because you can have a comparable average recruit rating and still have 30th ranked recruiting class -- like Maryland does. we'd just have more attrition to fit them in. (cue a different melt down)

if we were going to have a class this small (and the class is small), we needed to close on the highly rated targets we had

instead, the narrative is that somehow we're being "out-recruited by G5 teams" because we missed on our top targets and decided not to take two 3*s instead of the one 4* we really wanted and force twice as many people off the roster.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I agree, I would have thought that knowing we only had room for 14-16 recruits would mean that the coaching staff could have focused the same resources into a smaller pool of recruits and therefore put the full court press on some studly players. Looking at it now, its like they said "Eh, small class", and put an equivalent effort into it and got mediocre results.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

What it means is that you have to be more judicious about offering the Plan B (or even Plan C) guys, and that can cause those Plan B guys to look elsewhere while you're waiting on that Plan A that may never materialize. Now you're stuck with Plan C guys because you put the full court press on the Plan A guys that were planning to go out of state anyways.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Snipers like Urban Meyer, James Franklin, Dabo Swinney, Tim Brewster recruit their asses of every year. They don't look at numbers, they go get players they can win championships with. If you all think for one minute Fuente wouldn't have taken 4 and 5 star guys this year because of "numbers" you are mistaken. Cut kids if you have to-in order to win. If you want to hover around 7-5, sure get scared that you only have 5 seniors leaving and slow foot recruiting real talented difference makers - let me know how that works out. Go ahead and be cautious and see how your talent looks in 3 years. That's the difference. The snipers, the vultures recruit hard every year. We don't

Cut kids if you have to

Cue the complaints about number of guys in the transfer portal in 3, 2, ...

We've got a thread for that now!

LOL. If Fuente was bringing in kids like Dabo is bringing in, zero people would complain. Get it? We are hovering in the depths of the middle of the ACC, we are not recruiting well and guys like Keene, Hazelton, and Pickney are bolting. Look at the big picture as to why people might "complain" about attrition in the VT program. If we were bringing in a top 15 recruiting class, that's a different argument altogether.

But at the same time, you pitched a hissy fit when our staff walked CJ Beasley from his commitment in favor of bringing in transfers at RB. No disrespect to CJ Beasley, but he would have been our second lowest rated recruit and landed at Coastal Carolina.

and for the love of all things good and holy stop dragging dalton keene for making the decision to go pro as if it somehow reflects poorly on the state of our program

(light edit for grammar)

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Yeah, I'll back off that if Keene is taken in the first 5 rounds... until then. and I honestly don't remember anything beyond a sarcastic generic jab regarding Beasley? honestly don't remember ranting about him in particular.

Even if he's not taken in the first 5 rounds, that doesn't necessarily mean anything. If this is based on an analysis that he has a better shot at getting drafted this year than next, then that makes sense to pursue. 6th round this year would be better than not drafted next year (if that's what he thinks might happen next year).

In a vacuum, sure. Keene thinks he is ready for the NFL.. no biggie. My point is that the larger "attrition" issue at VT and Keene leaving only to be an UDFA is just one more data point.

you're assuming an outcome that hasn't happened yet

edit: lol i just noticed that further up the thread that your issue was "abnormal key attrition" and that here it's "the larger attrition issue"

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

you called us broke millennials and complained about the attrition from our horrible running game for several hours

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Probably did... but I don't remember discussing beasley in particular for any length of time.

I get DC's point... If we average around between three and four 4-star recruits per class, and 15ish 3-stars per class, and we lose between one and two 4-stars each off season and around five 3-star recruits, then the talent level on the roster isn't really improving; we're just replacing top 30 talent with top 30 talent.

Now, you could make the argument that the talent leaving was not a culture fit or scheme fit, and we're adding players of the same 'talent level' but better 'fit' - if that's the case, the follow up questions are (1) when will we start seeing the benefit of the better 'fit?' and (2) when will we start (consistently) recruiting above a top 30 level?

Twitter me

Sounds like they misidentified the Plan A guys or couldn't close on them. Having more offers available won't fix that problem.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

You are really just looking for ANY reason to be down on next year, aren't you? Yes, our 2020 class isn't ranked well, but are you expecting ANY of them to start? We have 18 returning starters, and I would guess the 4 others are coming from the 2 deep from last year. Plus we had transfers in. So not sure how the recruiting class really has ANYTHING to do with how Tech will actually perform on the field next year.

Best case scenario is the recruiting class actually turns out some talent and we pick up the rest we need through the transfer portal (which I'd argue that Tech's coaches have been pretty successful at). Worst case is that the class is a total dud and we don't do as well in 2022 because of it. In between is that we have a great 2021 class that makes up for this class being so bad and the coaches sort stuff out later.

We lost a ton of production on offense. Yes, Hooker will be better and play well. But his 3 best players on offense in terms of production just left. Teams will triple team Tre Turner if need be. Who is going to run the ball besides King? The kid from Kansas? OK. When we last saw our defense, they couldn't defend a QB counter at all. With a tougher schedule, my expectation is around 8 wins.

Turner will certainly draw the double until we make teams pay otherwise. Lots of production left the building.

That is very true - we lost a lot of production. My only point is that we shouldn't be expecting true freshman to be the ones to make up that production, so blaming anticipated poor (or at least not great) performance in 2020 on the 2020 recruiting class doesn't make sense. Your argument of lost production makes sense and is valid, that's just not the argument I was responding to.

Like all recruiting classes, any issues with the 2020 class won't really manifest until 2-3 years from now, never said otherwise.

You didn't - I wasn't arguing your points - I was arguing against VPIHokieME, who said:

So apparently 247sports.com has our 2020 class ranked #70, which is the worst of all P5 schools. There are G5 schools with better classes. How do we feel about that generally? Especially with all our losses to the portal (last I checked, VT had worst net in portal of acc teams). Hard to get excited about 2020 at this point :(

I added the underlining for clarity. Just saying we can't expect poor performance next year because the 2020 class wasn't good. If we expect it, it's for the reasons you mentioned (lost production on offense).

I'm down on next year, not because of the 2020 recruiting class, but because the evidence suggesting these coaches can't get it done just keeps mounting. This recruiting class is just another piece of evidence.

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

The issue isn't the size of the class but the average ranking of .85. That is concerning.

I'm sorry, but haven't we belabored these same points ad nauseam for several months over multiple threads?

Recruiting and Coaching are the two fundamental pillars of college football programs. Considering this is a website named after VT college football 3rd downs, there's going to be a lot of belaboring over it.

Hokie Club member since 2017

Do you have something better to do?

What can we possibly gain by addressing this again? It's not that complicated: the coaching staff (read: Fuente, as he's the one in charge) fucked up pretty badly a couple of years ago. And in large organizations it takes a while for those mistakes to manifest in results, but eventually they did, with a dismal 2018 and beginning of 2019. If we could afford to do it, he'd likely have been fired already, but we can't so we gave him a chance to turn it around. And to some extent, they have, at least relative to where we were.

Fuente got what very few coaches in this business get, a second chance, and he seems to be attempting to make the most of it. Belaboring the mistakes of the past is kind of unnecessary and frankly exhausting. Issues were addressed, course corrections were made, it's either going to work or it's not. If it does, no one will remember a few missteps on the way to building a quality program. If it doesn't, the dude's gonna get fired and we'll carry on. But continuing to nitpick a result that was written years ago is beyond useless.

Anybody got any info as to why he's getting Pitt predictions? From what I see on 247 he hasn't visited there?

Battle is not coming for an OV this weekend. I don't really know what is happening here, but I don't also think it's a failure on the coaching staff's part. Also went dark on NC State after his official. Right now he appears to not be a take for either school, hence the crystal balls for Pitt.

Seeing the coaching staff scrambling to hand out 2020 offers to unranked recruits now, in light of the predictable attrition of guys like Patterson, Grimsley and Steward, is damning to me. It seems like a mismanagement of scholarships to have "such a small class" when big-time attrition was expected, and Tech once again leads the conference in transfer portal entries for the second year. Maybe I should take this to the 2020 bitching thread, but it still sticks in my craw.

Yeah too bad that's not a thing but if you look at some states it appears to be that way. For example, I was randomly looking at 247 south carolina rankings and University of South Carolina has 8 out of the top 11 SC players for 2020

I wonder if it might actually help with some VA kids and getting them on board early. If you want to play, and not be necessarily super far from home (I know there are other options at all corners of the state), you need to jump on the boat to claim your spot.

I know it will have somewhat of the opposite effect as well with people being unsatisfied of us bringing in outsiders, but the counter to that is we have to get the best talent to try and win. We wanted you (or your kids) and we've missed, so we're spreading our reach far and wide to make sure we're going to get kids that want to be at VT. Maybe it'll make a coach or two look at VT in a different light.

getting those '22 offers out. I like that. Hopefully learned from "slow rolling"

Staff is hitting Texas hard

This sounds rather Galen Scott-ish.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

On the most recent TSL podcast, they talked about recruiting kids that fit the culture of the team and how they thought we should model ourselves after a school like Wisconsin..now I have zero idea what the culture of this VT team is supposed to be but I wonder if this whole push to TX is because Fuente isn't satisfied with where the culture is now and is more comfortable with that area of the country and thinks the recruits from there fit his vision better.

....Or maybe they just saw an opportunity since there's a metric assload of football players in TX idk

metric assload

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

I have 4 mainframes banded together to get this thread to load faster. Still takes an hour.

Oof, I was just looking at OX_VT's twitter and the graphics he's putting up are sickening. Losing momentum in recruiting is a an impossible quicksand to escape. Hopefully with our early success in 2021 it'll be MUCH better.

does anyone happen to have a list of visitors this weekend? Landyn Watson is coming, Naquan Brown replied to it suggesting he might be joining as well.

EDIT: deleted the first tweet, didn't realize when you embed a reply it keeps the original with it

Somebody upped their recruiting game.

Love the graphic but...Souts? Does nobody spell check these things?

Lol. Aw man

Hell yea! Take that Limestone College!

Required Qualifications: "Experience working in a Division I "Power 5" football program."

Novel idea.

So the new DC wouldn't be a competitive applicant for this job, then.

My phone lost 16% of its battery trying to load this page...

I think all the GIFs and Twitter embeds are murder on phones.

It's not just phones. My laptop loads most things pretty fast, but is on the struggle bus loading the recruiting thread.

Me too. Literally the only thing my computer struggles with is this website with large threads. I absolutely refuse to access the website when on data. I wish there was a way to defeat images/gifs in user settings.

Hear, hear! I've said this a number of times. Turning them off individually is a PITA and AFAIK only works on one device.

Anyone else want to vote to make these threads weekly?

Hang on, one more day.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

All of yall complaining about your computer loading. I've owned a Macbook of some sort for almost 15 years now and I haven't had a single issue loading a TKP page... ever.

#justsayin

Is it basketball season yet?

Hey now, I've sacrificed beer, a football, and some old game tickets to the gods of loading speeds and this still takes my iPad Pro and my laptop longer to load this page than the average time to decide to run a jet sweep.

My phone actually loads this thread faster than either my work computer or laptop.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.
