Like his father, John, Bill would always get into coaching football. John Teerlinck coached for more than 30 years in both college football and professional football. He coached for 25 seasons in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with Denver and Indianapolis.
When asked about his coaching interest, Bill responded: "My dad being my hero, I got no other option, that's all I know and that's all I ever wanted to do."
The son began his coaching career at Illinois State as the Defensive Line coach from 2005-2006. Bill Teerlinck then moved on to work with the Indianapolis Colts. He was a defensive assistant for five seasons. He worked with the defensive line that featured Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, both made the Pro Bowl four-times and three-times respectively.
