He was insanely loyal to his staff. I imagine he was asked to change DC's and maybe didn't want to. Also stated that he wanted to retire young as he has millions from coaching. Lastly, they had been in touch with Anthony Poindexter about possibly being a DC, would they go with him as HC?

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

If I'm Brent Pry my pitch is "you can come earn meaningful experience with me as a DC at VT and wait for the right HC job to open up, or you can go to UVA and I will get you fired within 3 years and there will be no opening in my staff for a loser"

Free Hugh

I think this makes the most sense, you have to imagine there were convos about changes to the D staff after it being purely putrid this year. Sounds like they gave Bronco the hard play and he decided to bounce.

Otherwise, to make this decision on your own so late, and with the Tweet from the RB coach implying this was a surprise would be a real Richard Move by Bronco, specifically to his coaches who are now left scrambling.

Now that all the coaching shuffling is finished LOLUVA decides to join the party... I can't laugh hard/loud enough.

uva - the taint of the ACC

drink up!

Not surprised. Most UVa fans I've talked to are legit scared of VT getting big time with Pry. That hire got their attention.

Look for them to also hire someone with VA ties/recruiting experience to counter VT.

I don't think they have the money they're willing to throw at football like we did. I was reading Le Sabre reactions and multiple ppl were saying things along the line of "if we won more, we'd donate more"..... real forward thinking there.

Oh no, they will likely hire a big reach or someone underwhelming in the end. But no doubt VT and Pry raised some eyebrows up there. Especially also after a VT team with an interim coach came and beat them on their own field with their hero Armstrong at QB. I think the horrible defense was the last straw there.

Bronco was their best coach that didn't coach in the 80s, he did a great job getting UVA some what respectable compared to the London years. So I am not sure what winning more means.

On the flip side, UVAs coaches made more than VTs so they did invest in their program better than VT in 1 aspect. But recruiting, facilities, etc. all add up. So who knows if they want to spend money on a juice bar.

Did he really?

Other than 1 really good season (which pretty much everybody in Coastal can claim in the last 7-8 years), has he really made that much progress in 6 years? Is Uva's football identity any clearer now than 6 years ago? If Armstrong leaves, how much less of a mess will that program be than in 2016?

I guess he was 1-5 vs VT so he's got that going for him...which is nice.

1-5 is the best record for a UVA coach against Tech for UVA in the last 20 years!

Armstrong is GONE and taking the money.

I think you're forgetting how bad UVA was when Bronco got there. He moved UVA from bottom 5 of P5 to mediocre.

Twitter me

Mostly on the backs of two outstandingly successful college QBs.

Both 3-star QBs (.87 & .86). Either Bronco out-scouted everyone to find these guys, or out-developed them. Either way, Bronco found 2 'outstandingly successful college QBs' to take UVA from garbage to mediocre.

Both 3-star QBs (.87 & .86). Either Bronco out-scouted everyone to find these guys, or out-developed them. Either way, Bronco found 2 'outstandingly successful college QBs' to take UVA from garbage to mediocre.

Let's face it, guys like that don't come around every day. It may be that Bronco has a good eye for talent, but Armstrong has a stellar arm (and a good mind for the game), and Perkins was a great ad-libber. In fact they were both great at making something out of nothing.

But he just had two of those, and it was mostly raw talent that was effective at the college level. I don't think it was because Bronco was a QB Whisperer. If anything, he put some good receivers out there and let them go.

To me Perkins is similar to Jerod Evans. Every once in awhile you strike gold in the portal.

Yeah. Bronco lucked out on that one.

I'm not forgetting at all. The question was "is UVa in that much better shape than when he took over"? I would say "no". It's better, but six years later is still in the bottom 25% of the P5 as a program on the whole and headed down, not up.

I know he's claims it's all personal reflection, blah, blah, but I think ultimately Bronco leaving UVa, not retiring, is him getting off a sinking ship while his rep is still somewhat intact because people always get suckered into thinking lots of passing yards equals quality.

Mike London had one season >.500. Bronco went .500 or better in every (regular) season, except his first. UVA is no longer penciled in to finish last in the Coastal each preseason. I'd call that an improvement.

I think ultimately Bronco leaving UVa, not retiring, is him getting off a sinking ship while his rep is still somewhat intact

It's possible that UVA has improved, but Bronco wants out before the ship sink. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Twitter me

I think Bronco can see the writing on the wall, just like we all can.

Their recruiting is slipping, now that the shine is off of Bronco, and UVa would likely take a pretty big step back next year, even if he stayed.

If Bronco had stayed and Armstrong left, they might beat out a truly putrid mess of a Duke program for the cellar next year, but that's it.

So again, is UVa really in much better shape than when he took it over?

Bronco in the cellar?

Don't try to make us sympathize with Bronco.

They made it to a bowl game 4 of the last 5 seasons (would be 5 out of 5 if not for covid), an ACC championship appearance and an NY6 bowl. How much more winning do they need to pony up?

They only care about national championships. So they will never care about football.

With 41 42 bowls, that's not a high bar.

Also, with the ACC sharing bowl revenues, it's not like you get to keep the money.

They had one really nice season when all of the stars aligned. Welcome to the Coastal.

Other than that, he's never gotten the team beyond mediocre and there is little reason to see that improving.

As college athletics changes (transfer portal, NIL, etc), a lot of coaches are going to lose interest (and other coaches will excel). Roy Williams left UNC because he didn't want to deal with it. Gary Paterson was pushed out because he couldn't. The 'earn your number' BS doesn't play anymore.

Anyways, hope UVA makes another mediocre hire.

Twitter me

Yeah.

Carla Williams is pretty well thought of overall and they're a very successful Basketball/Olympic sports school, plenty of money, and good facilities (or at least funds to dedicate to them).

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Shhhh. I wasn't gonna say it, but that suck big time

Marshall to UVA is a vertical move, but not that far vertical. If Huff wants a top 25 job, he's better off building Marshall up (where its easier to win than UVA).

I'm more concerned about Chadwell going to UVA. Reddit said Chadwell missed out on a lot of P5 jobs because he wants to take his whole staff with him. UVA might allow that. If Chadwell goes to UVA, they could easily become competent.

That would be a nightmare. Really don't want to see that every year.

To be the man you gotta beat the man!

Why is the ACC coastal division such a magnet for the triple option? It's absolutely ridiculous

Talking about the ACC in general - there's a lot of nerd schools (Duke, GT, Wake, UVA, maybe Syracuse) that want to be relevant in football, but don't want to make the investment to be great. The triple option is a great equalizer.

I don't think it's that big of a deal for UVA. Just like how VT wasn't competing with USC, LSU, etc for coaches, UVA isn't looking at the same coaches as anyone else with an opening. Maybe Duke? Do you really think there was any candidate available to UVA 2 months ago who is no longer available?

ive given and sat in on some tech interviews for uva grads. oof, really gotta wonder what their cs dept is teaching those kids.

I been here since day 0.

my step-brother went to a small, private, liberal arts school in MD and has literally no dog in this fight - he's told me that he has interviewed and hired both Hokies and Wahoos throughout his career and in EVERY SINGLE case the Hokies outperformed the Wahoos. He was consistently disappointed with the Wahoos - stating that on paper they looked good but their attitudes were crap. He said he'd hire Hokies over Hoos every day from now on - anecdotal evidence but evidence nonetheless

Onward and upward

It comes down to philsophy. From an academic perspective (and I've been told this at multiple institutions), VT CS is seen as being very difficult, very math heavy. Not git levels, but up there. We load our students down with heavy math and a lot of super technical 3XXX-4XXX coursework, not a lot of fluff (well, outside of maybe HCI). Over there they don't do this, they approach STEM like liberal arts: they do senior thesis and whatnot. This is nice and all but its not super tech heavy, and undergraduate thesis neither really break any new ground, nor give a strong research framework. Theres a reason why the running joke is "the limit of computer science, as gpa approaches 0, is bit"

Now, to take off my academia cap and give a story:

I sat in on an interview with a recent grad and he was saying he had extensive linux experience. We asked a simple question: "you are placed in front of a linux box and the only thing you have access to is a terminal. you know nothing about this machine beforehand. how would you go about figuring out what it is used for?"

response: "terminal? is that a command line?"

Well, when they refuse to words like freshman, sophomore, or campus, what do you expect?

I always liked that VT's college of business made all its students take public speaking and a Microsoft Office lab, regardless of major (this was in the late '90s, I assume it's till true) It seems like common sense that those are skills you need in pretty much any job, but I can't believe how many professionals I meet who don't have them.

Tidewater Community College (Cedar Road University) made me take public speaking for my associates degree. I took a test to avoid the Office class (I see its usefulness, I just didn't want to waste my and their time). Early 2000's

I just assumed everywhere did that kind of thing.

As of the late 00's - early 10s, they no longer required us to take a Microsoft Office lab, but they still required public speaking for any business track. That has probably been the single most useful course for so many of us that were really uncomfortable in public settings

1) Dead serious I hope his life and family are doing well. A sudden change like this suggests there *might* be a personal situation simmering out of sight. Despite my soul-hardened hated for all things LOLUVA I'll never root against someone who might have to go through hard things. Apart.

2) JC just straight up broke that man's soul. Sorry not sorry.

I got the sense that it's something personal as well, based on his comments in his interview.

Not health related, thankfully.

uva - the taint of the ACC

With a picture of a broken paver.

This needs to go plaid.

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

So today VT gets a new coach and announces the 2nd biggest football budget in the ACC. Bronco goes to his boss and asks "Where's that football building you said you were gonna build? Where's that budget increase I was expecting?" So Bronco gets the run-around about how's there's no money, but he should probably find another D coordinator to work for peanuts. At this point Bronco is tired of admin excuses and goes and drafts his resignation letter.

UVa doesn't want to be good at football, and I think Bronco walked out on their lack of support.

"When you're green, you're growing. When you're ripe, you rot." -Ray Kroc

And this is probably closer to the truth than you know

uva - the taint of the ACC

If you follow financial news, there's been an enormous wave of resignations as people reevaluate what they want from life during the COvID disruption. I think it's entirely possible (maybe even likely) that an extremely rich dude in late middle age might just say "fuck it I'm moving to the beach" instead of dealing with the stress of football coaching. If I was CFB coach rich id be typing this from the beach instead of my cube

The thing is *most* of those coaches that get to the HC at a P5 program level are wired very competitively and would not be happy at the beach like you (or a lot of people).

The longer I think about this...

And pavers everywhere rejoiced.

Does this mean no more "hard things together"?

uva - the taint of the ACC

Sounds like he quit because UVa didn't want to commit to what it takes financially to keep up and he said fuck it and peaced out

I'm from NC and I've only ever heard one man speak this idiom and his initials are JR. Please tell me you do not recognize that or this world just got super small.

Pretty common phrase...

It may be, but I'm not joking when I have only heard one person in my entire life use it. I am glad it is more common than I am aware.

I was a little surprised to see Fuente come out ahead, as I thought Bronco might have pulled away more the last couple of years. But Bronco also started with a 2-10 season.

Surprised people would think this. But then again, it's a message board, so...not surprised.

Interesting -- according to Jerry Ratcliffe, Mendenhall offered Poindexter the DC job at UVA on Wednesday.

Seems strange given that Mendenhall must have been thinking of stepping down before then.

maybe UVA admin wouldn't approve the salary that Poindexter was requesting, so Mendenhall got frustrated with the lack of resources and resigned?

Or maybe Poindexter declined and that was the last straw for Mendenhall?

Poindexter - do you want to be the DC at PSU, VT or LOL?

Poindexter probably said the only job he would consider at LOL is HC, and Carla said "I can make that happen" in front of Bronco.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

"He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest "For he's with you clear to the end "And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test "If the guy in the glass is your friend.

"You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum, "And think youยนre a wonderful guy, "But the man in the glass says youยนre only a bum, "If you canยนt look him straight in the eye.

"You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years "And get pats on the back as you pass "But your final reward will be heartache and tears "If you've cheated the man in the glass."

Tennessee a couple years ago was also amazeballs.

We need a 30 for 30 on that dumpster fire.

uva's current search is what...1 or 2 more rejections away from entering that territory?

UVA isn't even close to entering Tennessee Territory - think about that search:

  • The entire fanbase thought they were getting an NFL HoF coach
  • Instead, they were about to get Greg Schiano, but after it was leaked, the fanbase rebelled forcing the AD to reneg his offer
  • The AD flew across the country, made an offer to another coach, was fired on the plane ride home, but didn't find out until he landed.
  • Said AD was replaced by the university's former football coach, who hired a Saban assissant, who eventually got ousted for minor NCAA violations

Additionally, we would later discovered that (1) the first AD (john Curry) was conspiring (for lack of a better term) with the media to positively portray the greg schiano hire and (2) The second AD (phil fulmer) staged a coup to take this guys spot.

This was some straight Game of Thrones shit. UVA folks aren't savage enough to do something this entertaining. UVA is just an undesirable job. Not much else to it.

What a savings

Ah yes, a bidding war with, checks notes, Duke?

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

not just a bidding war with Duke. But with Clemson OC as well. The fact that UVA and Duke are in a bidding war for Head Coach and Clemson is in the same war for Offensive Coordinator is hysterical

Onward and upward

Honestly Duke might be the better job if you want to use it as a steppingstone. String together a few 6-7 win seasons plus one 8 or 9 win season and you set yourself up nicely to make a jump. UVA you probably need multiple 9-10 win seasons to do it. Rightly or wrongly the perception is that you should be able win more at UVA.

you can win 7-8 games with uva if you have a decent set up, and multiple 8 win seasons there would make any coach look good

winning 6 games at duke is way harder imo

Sounds like Dabo doesn't want to lose his OC by entering the bidding war.

Probably for the same reasons they didn't get Poindexter. If they can't get an alumnus who's in their freaking sports hall of fame, why would anyone else who's worth a damn take that job. They are setting their next coach up for failure right off the bat.

I couldn't be happier.

With how everything is going with UVA's coach search, it makes me respect and appreciate Whit even more for being able to not have leaks and to get his guy. I hope loluva continues to fumble this process!

It would be oddly fitting if they ended up with a coach who went to West Virginia. I wonder how the academic elite would handle that one.

The confusion of VT and UVA outside the state of Virginia is in fact very very strong. So there's a strong possibility that this scenario is plausible. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

To be fair, when you consider the "workouts" Bronco came up with, the playland at Chic-Fil-A would've worked just fine.

Maybe Bronco's strange workouts weren't done by choice but by necessity to compensate for the shit facilities.

The workouts were too on-brand for Bronco and UVA to blame the facilities.

Curves was the next best option when they failed to locate and showcase the sledge hammer and backyard paving tiles. Bronco must've taken back to the 'ranch'.

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

Time to start BowenUp on offense.

Everyone is in agreement that TE was going to Charlottesville to accept the position and then something happened in the final negotiations right? Coaches don't just take university owned planes from their current college to their possible new college with their families for an interview.

To be fair, this is loluva we are talking about. Nothing they do is normal, so they were just doing loluva things.

Yeah I refuse to believe this. You whiff on an alum and someone that was clearly wanted by fans. Then whiff on Elliot who by all accounts wanted the UVA job. Now you're telling me they can pull the Broyles award winner? I'm smelling a strikeout.

And donors have shown they won't pony up unless they're excited about the coaching hire. Poindexter probably would have done it. Let's see who they manage to hire.

If true, good news for us.

I don't think this is a great hire. Fairly young, unproven coach whose offensive philosophy (which isn't terribly complex) relies heavily on elite players making plays.

Additionally, what does his network look like? What kind of staff will he be able to put together?

I would have been more impressed (disappointed really) if they had hired Mike Houston.

Is coronavirus over yet?

He is going to be an issue, young talented black coach. Depending on what resources and hiring he gets to do I see them being better than under Bronco.

Shouldn't be an issue.

Luckily, VT will be better with Pry.

Guess that $10M they just committed to football facilities last night was Elliott's prerequisite....

It's looking like a done deal.

Multiple sources now joining in.

That makes them tailor made to be the ACC's annual sacrificial lamb to travel to El Paso each December.

Meh. That offense looked exposed as hell this year. When they don't have Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence running it, they struggled against teams they had absolutely no business struggling against, given the talent gap.

The biggest thing to come out of all this is that Clemson looks to be completely torpedoed right now. In the past week, Dabo has lost his boss, his OC, and his DC. Oof.

This is my school
This is home

Makes ya wonder if there's any fire to the smoke of Dabo to Vegas I think I read over on TSL. No sauces just another message board comment.

Four former players in that game in Vegas including Renfrow who seemed to be a favorite of his. I'd be interested if that just a detour on a recruiting trip and if not how long he was in Vegas? With both coordinators out the door one would think he would be making sure all his recruits were still on board. If he isn't doing that, that would add some smoke to the fire.

Bruce Feldman mentioned that the National Football Foundation CFB Hall of Fame awards dinner was in Vegas on the 7th. I believe C.J. Spiller was enshrined this year, so I imagine Dabo went.

No shit. In a manner of a week Clemson got stripped for parts after suffering their worst year in probably half a decade. We'll definitely see how good of a HC Dabo really is after this. It's been brutal (and a little delicious) to watch. The only downside is that Clemson has been propping up the ACC for the past few years.

ESPN has the headline that UVA hired Tony Elliott and when you click the link it reads:

They do that because they don't have video content yet that fits the exact context of the article.

I'm sure they'll update it is as soon as they have something better.

In all seriousness though what do we think of Elliot at UVa? I think the idea that we're somehow jealous is ridiculous. But it can be said he's a bigger name than the last few hires UVa has had in their coaching doom loop.

Also, wasn't Elliot rumored to be the guy Whit was looking at last year? Obviously it didn't happen, which makes me think there's a good reason Whit didn't end up going that direction if its true.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I dont actually think he is a bigger name. Mike London won a championship in Virginia and recruited like it.

Bronco was a huge surprise and a huge get out of the blue. He had a long history at winning. At the time I thought getting Bronco was a huge commitment to football, then he had people crawling down a hill ... not the last time I will be wrong.

If Elliott was the guy and then wasn't ... why go to UVA? It's a step down from VT. Just seems odd. Anyways, he has really only been at Clemson, things work differently there that lots of programs. It will be interested in seeing his approach. I really didn't like watching their offense under Lawrence. It seemed when things got bad they just started running Lawrence. And sure that could be a wrinkle, but it happened way to often. So I think who he brings in as OC and DC matter a lot. Where as for Pry I think he has the ability to bring Marve along until he is ready. I am not sure Elliott has that luxury. Also DCs are typically on the field, OCs aren't. Soi think In game help is easier on the defensive side.

I find it odd to see UVA go for a coordinator this time just like us. Last time they got a HC from a smaller school, just like us. Both times VT announced the coaching change first.

The biggest hurdle for Elliot IMO is that he simply doesn't have the network that a guy like Pry has. Who is Elliot going to hire? What will that staff look like? How much P-5 experience will he be able to bring with him?

Huge question marks IMO.

Is coronavirus over yet?

If Elliott was the guy and then wasn't ... why go to UVA? It's a step down from VT

I get the sense Elliot's perspective is he just wanted a HC position and took the best job he was ultimately offered. Which whether there was truth to last year's rumors or not, ultimately he didn't get the VT job. UVa was simply the best job offer he did end up with.

edit: just want to say to your last point: they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery :)

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I can't say it is a bad hire but it seems like a blind date rather than a natural fit. His offenses dominated the ACC when he had NFL early round picks at QB, RB, and WR so it's hard to say how much was scheme and how much was incredible talent especially when the ACC has sucked around them for years.

He could be Chip Kelly of the east or Fuente of Lane North. So your answer is .... only time will tell

I can't say it is a bad hire but it seems like a blind date rather than a natural fit.

Really well put. I'm concerned about the hire, but it could definitely fail.

Twitter me

In all seriousness the only thing that matters is how well he can recruit at UVa, not scheme, not background, not any of the other noise. VT is gonna do what VT is gonna do structurally and they will do what UVa does structurally. The only thing that will make a difference is whether or not UVa is taking recruits that VT needs/wants. Everything else is just adaptation.

If you think he will be able to recruit well and take players from VT then you should be worried. If not, you shouldn't be worried. It's both necessary and fun to beat UVa but they aren't VT's real competition. Beating UVa is like getting through jump school on your way to earning your long tab... necessary but not overly challenging and not the end goal.

I knew an old VT AD that thought a good LOL UVA football program was good for VT as well. Everyone benefits. Never mentioned specifics.

...with spirits true and faithful...

This is my concern, especially on offense. Hopefully, I'm wrong.
