Hokie Hoops Statistical Notes: Volume 14

After much delay, the 14th edition of the CMYBall Statistical Notes is in the books. After, seemingly, a month since I last updated the Hokies have finished their next four game stretch of Pitt, Miami Florida State, Louisville,Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest. I was kind of thinking we would have gone 2-2 with the loss to Florida State/Louisville and Pitt (because it happens), so while the opponents were different, the expected results remained the same. Without further ado: Data

Scoring
As a team, the Hokies put up 295 points over this foursome, much closer to their average four game window than the previous set. Aluma led all scorers with 91, followed by Mutts (57), Alleyne (35), and Cattoor (30). Recently off of suspension G/F Radford was next on the list with 26, followed by Fr phenom Bamisile (21).

Rebounding
In the worst four game outing of the season, the Hokies failed to break 120 rebounds over the set, managing just 117 boards. Double-double machine Aluma led the way with 38, followed by Mutts (25) and Bede (10).

Assists
Think about how bad that GT game was for the ATO perspective. Got it? Even with that game, this was by far the best ATO margin for a four game window of the season; with a ridiculous 1.92:1 team ATO. Bede is proving just how good he is as a floor general during this tetralogy. He led the team with 17 assists and a 5.67:1 ATO margin. Only 1 Hokie who averaged more than 1 minute a half averaged an ATO of less than 1:1 and that was Mutts, who finished 10:11. Three Hokie post players, combining for 123 minutes of play didn't commit a turnover.

Experience/Depth
As with last edition, five Hokies surpassed 100 minutes played. Aluma led all with 129, followed by Mutts and Alleyne (127, each), Bede (113) and Cattoor (109). The only other Hokie to accrue more than 60 minutes was Radford (64) who missed two games due to suspension.

Next Four Two
This is it for HHSN for the 2020-21 season, as with so many variables in play it's impossible to name everybody who will finish our schedule. As a result, I will just focus on what I can guarantee.

To say I want a win in our next game is a massive understatement. I've been following Hokie Basketball since my dad got a job at Tech in 1992. Tech was already on a 3 game losing streak to Louisville at that time. We still haven't won. This is probably going to be the deciding game on whether or not we get the double bye. Hell, after tonight's results, this could determine if we win the ACC regular season, outright. The Cardinals do have some questionable losses to Clemson and Miami, but they are riding a winning streak against us, going back to when I was in Kindergarten.

Ending the regular season, CMYBall rides on down to Raleigh to face an NC State team that I haven't figured out if they're good, bad, or just dangerous enough to mess with everybody. A week ago, I was sure this was a cakewalk. Then they sweep a three game road trip, culminating in a takedown of UVA.

Prediction
The Hokies and the Cardinals allow the same scoring defensively, but the Hokies average 3 ppg more. NC State score 2 ppg more, but the Hokies allow 4 ppg fewer. In my heart, The Hokies win out, securing, not only the double-bye, but thanks to shenanigans win the damn conference. In my head, the Hokies go 1-1 with the loss to Louisville. In my O&M whatthefuckery glasses, we beat Louisville, lose to NC State, and in some weird Tobacco Road fuckery, we wind up 5th

In any event, this season has been one hell of a wild ride, and I do not envy anybody we play in the ACC tournament or March Madness.
