I have noticed this season that the voice of Lane stadium is different than I remember for the past 20 years. Did I miss an article or forum topic to discuss this change before the season started? I hope our original PA announcer didn't pass away or anything.

It changed a while back. Maybe a couple years ago. I saw things implying the other guy was forced out.
someone around here has either a badge or a sig that reads #BringBackMcChain and I agree with this sentiment
By gawd, that's GoKart's entrance music.
*This fits better here.
Bill McChain is an NRV treasure!!!! His voice may be nasally but his voice was the voice of Lane Stadium and there was no reason to change that. Thank God it lives on in the old videos into perpetuity.
THERE HE IS
He was forced out. Was/is a local radio guy in Roanoke
Anybody know why that would've been the case?
Probably the nasally voice
Crazy that he's had the same voice forever and has been calling VT games since the 90's with no issues. Then suddenly in 2019, the voice is too nasally. Sounds like someone had nothing better to do in the AD and starting looking for problems to fix where there were none.
His daughter did a post on it somewhere and it was actually kind of sad how they handled it. IIRC it happened when we made the coaching change and we could have been more gracious in how we broke the news to Mr. McChain
Yeah the previous guy left I think after 2018. He now does Salem Red Sox games if you want to go and hear that familiar voice sometime. I was at a Sox game back last spring and heard his voice and was like whoa that sounds familiar.
That's a damn shame I haven't been to Lane since 2017.... to me it will NEVER sound the same without him. He was the voice of Lane Stadium.
Being in Lane for 4/7 games this year, I can't really remember even hearing the PA announcer. The old guy was there every single play. Even watching old highlights on YouTube you can hear that unique voice ring thru.
It didn't help for me that the one game I went to in Lane this year was the Richmond game, where the sound system crapped out for most of the first half.
God, that game was glorious. We were able to just watch football without all the extra hooting and hollering, my wife and I loved it!
We're only 34 so I guess this means we've reached peak "get off my lawn" age.
Not sure about the announcer, but I HATE some of the crap on the scoreboard. The dude walking through the stands with the whammy game needs to turn his screaming down a couple of notches. The dumb go kart thing they keep pulling with 0 correlation to anything other than whoever they decided "wins" that week. Playing pump up clips at the WRONG time.
I get that the scoreboard is there to help with the atmosphere, but whoever they've got running it is a moron.
Playing "Shout" at the beginning of the 4th quarter at the Pitt game.
You guys remember the guy that would paint himself like a Spartan. And worse, his girlfirend that did too.
Bruh, ain't gonna be no bad-mouthing of Phil up in here.
Fuck you dude, Phil is awesome
Don't know him personally but it's the VT equivalent of the UVA guys that dress up as Thomas Jefferson.
I forgot we were founded by Spartans
I mean, VT's biggest claim to CFB fame is one high profile loss.
I hate you. I mean, you're not wrong. ...and that's why I hate you.
not to be masochistic, but just one?
Yeah, I visited Lane after years and was shocked at the crap that was going on through the jumbotron. It felt like I was in middle school.
The gameday experience in general has sharply declined since 2016-ish. Hell, the school as a whole has declined since 2016-ish but that's a conversation for another day.
It all started with that dumbass logo.
My wife said LOLUVA was going to change out the crossed Sabres for two twisting wet noodles.
I was most annoyed by him misprouncing Jamon Gordon and Xavier Adibi's first names.
Sort of feel like that's worse than anything Fuente has done the last 6 years....
How did they say it? I am dying to know
"Jay-men" Gorden and "Ex-avier" Adibi.
I was really hoping Adibi's name wasn't pronounced "Javier" or something egregious.
well they did say tie-rod taylor for years
I honestly didn't know we were mispronouncing it until he was in Cleveland. I think I get it right like 80% of the time since then.
It is Tie-rod

I definitely liked the old guy better
I went to the Pitt game this year, too much sheninagans on the video board with all the dancing and videos, I'd rather them go to the Marching Virginians playing some traditional Hokie Music.
