September should get kicked off in style, let's hope the boys show up on Friday night, if they do expect some news shortly after

Any breadcrumbs on this one?

Mansoor Delane just got rated as a 4* by ESPN and got a significant composite bump on 247.

D'Andre Martin also just got rated (mid .84s on composite) but an 87 overall by 247.

Class is now up to 18th nationally from 20th, and 14th overall by 247 scores.

The VT bump. ESPN finally figuring out that we know how to spot DBs. Or maybe committing to VT as a CB shows that you are a good decision maker.

Maybe if we keep winning, they will keep bumping our recruiting rankings. That's how this while momentum thing works right?

Anyone who is more plugged into recruiting or is at least on Twitter that can share how the recruits we had on campus (or even watching at home) reacted to the game/entrance/atmosphere? I know one game doesn't win a recruit but given how we as fans felt about the game/outcome/atmosphere I would like to see how they came away feeling about it

We have made impressions.

I was for sure expecting a Texas commit last week, but didn't pull the trigger. Yet.

Paul Davis out of GA was very happy with his visit. 4⭐ WR.

I know he moved from North Carolina but I love the idea of a four star guy from Hillsville, VA.

Doesn't matter what side of the ball he plays on, I think he's got the potential to be a big time difference maker.

As somebody who was not four star, but a guy from Hillsville, I really want this guy.

Has to be better than the last guy we got. We had a walk on in the early 2000s who quit because he thought he should be starting at RB because he was the BMOC in Hillsville.

Hearing some chatter that could directly effect recruiting. Hearing Ryan Smith and Penn State may be looking at each other, really would be a bummer to lose one of our better recruiters so early on

Go for it

That would suck coaching wise as well! Has done a pretty good job with the DBs!

He also stepped in as DC when JHam missed his first game and did a great job on short notice in his 20's. His future as a coach is super bright.

Everyone panic donate to Hokie Club!

Fuck Penn State.

This would hurt deeply. Ryan Smith has been our key guy in recovering and building relationships in Richmond and NoVA.

He's top 2 on my list of coaches I don't want us to lose. I say we give him a raise.

If we could keep him with a raise, the contract should already be done, I'm not sure if it's all about money, will be finding out more within the next few days. Biggest thing is players can't let this be a distraction one way or the other we gotta be ready to play Saturday.

Go for it

He's very low paid compared to Fu's buddies on the offensive staff. I don't care if we lose those guys, but I don't want to lose Smitty.

Don't want to lose VIce but I agree we need to keep Ryan Smith.

Since it's a state job (someone can correct me on this), I believe it's up for renewal at the end of the fiscal year. So, I don't think we can negotiate the contract until then. Maybe?

Also, I'm not sure Penn St will have their current coaches there in a few months time. Franklin will be linked to some big time openings at the end of the year. He already had to put out the "I'm not talking to anyone" statement yesterday over USC opening.

Here's to it being Ryan's agent leveraging him for a well deserved raise to stay at VT!

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

Get that man a raise immediately.

Smitty just sneaking in to get the other Cam back in the boat!

Pay the man!

why is this even coming up right now? does penn st even have an opening at the moment?

That was my question. Do position coaches normally move during the season to other schools?

Jack Bauer fears no one. Except Xavier Adibi.

Agreed. PSU has their staff in place and I doubt he takes an off the field role. Hopefully Franklin is gone to USC soon and it becomes a non-issue.

Unless he gets recruited to USC

I wouldn't be thrilled, but him going to USC instead of PSU would be much better considering the recruiting footprints

Agreed. It would be a bit of a surprise if he left for the west coast. He is doing well at VT, knows the area, has NFL caliber DBs here to coach and is recruiting well. He would be starting all over out west knowing non of the high schools. He isn't paid much here but he is only in his 2nd year on the field with us. I expect him to get a raise.

And to add to what you said, he would have to be paid quite a bit more to be able to have the same standard of living in LA that he does in SW Virginia. Not everyone takes things like that into account. Some just see $170,000 vs. $150,000 (I'm just making the numbers up) and assume $170,000 is more when it really isn't.

There's a decent chance Franklin ends up at USC at the end of the year.

So, is retaining assistants more on Fu or Whit? Cause with the way he has stepped up with recruiting, plus stepping up to the DC role for a game last year whoever needs to be do something needs to be doing everything they can to keep him home

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

If FU wanted to really change his status and relationship with the fan base, he might consider giving back $1M of his annual salary going forward to be used to increase the staff and coaches salaries. I bet THAT would solidify some coaches (and fans) for the future.

that would look absolutely terrible to any future head coaching prospects and high level assistants

I think it depends on timing. If he did that at the onset of covid he would have been all over the news as some type of hero. Doing it now is a little late, yea

It wouldn't be unheard of. Tony Bennet did it in 2019

In 2019, University of Virginia men's basketball coach Tony Bennett led the Cavaliers to their first appearance in the Final Four in 35 years and on to win their first NCAA Championship title in program history.

But when UVA President Jim Ryan and Athletic Director Carla Williams tried to offer Bennett a raise after the win, he rejected it.

"President Ryan and Carla were very gracious in what they offered to me as a potential contract, but I have a very good contract," said Bennett, in an article published on UVA's website on Sept. 15. "I have more than enough, and if there are ways that this can help out the athletic department, the other programs and coaches, by not tying up so much [in men's basketball], that's my desire."

"I have more than I need," he said. "I'm blessed beyond what I deserve."

The coach also donated $500,000 toward a career-training initiative for current and former UVA men's basketball players. Rejecting additional compensation "just does not happen in our industry," said Williams.

Makes it a bit harder to dislike the dude. He genuinely seems like a good human being.

declining a raise on a new contract is different than having to personally subsidize the wages of the staff

Certainly an apples to oranges situation, but the idea is the same. The head coach make a sacrifice for what hopefully turns into long term success for the program.

I hate it when UVA has guys that are hard to hate.

Yeah my best friend in grad school for a while actually did his undergrad at UVa. They are not all Zima-swilling, liver pate-eating types.

How dare you bust up stereotypes?! /s

You're right, some of them can't even handle Zimas and don't touch meat.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Just read that we lost Tyler Nickel, saw 19 comments in the football recruiting thread and in true VT-I'm-ready-to-get-hurt-again fashion, I see it's all about potentially losing a bright spot on the coaching staff.

At least we're 2-0 right now. Go Hokies, please kick the pants off WVU.

Appears it may just be smoke hopefully to get a well deserved raise, definitely nothing concrete yet which I would have to believe on our side is a good thing. Don't see Franklin at USC though, unless they strike out on the rest of their top 3-5. Most of his recruiting ties are east coast and DMV. Now on to WVU!! Let's get a W and keep the train rollin

Go for it

I could see franklin chasing the shiny object, though

If I was a coach, and someone dangled southern california in front of my face, along with 5 bills, see ya would be my response to Ped state

Oh I definitely think he would accept the job, but I just don't know if he would be a great hire for what USC wants there. To be a great hire for USC they need a big name that can draw in the fans which while he's a great recruiter I'm just not sure Franklin is the guy that would excite the casuals or boosters in SoCal but if they miss on other big names they may not have a better option.

Go for it

He can recruit and his teams play well. That is better than USC has had since Pete Carroll.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

USC expects to be on par with the top 5 teams year in and year out, whether that's a fair expectation or not, they certainly have many things that could appeal to recruits, and they also have the mentioned history with Carroll, they look at the NIL as their shot in the arm to up their team to the next level, whether that takes place will be seen but they're gonna definitely take a shot at a big name or big time proven coach first whether they can land one is the unknown

Go for it

I can tell you that my UCLA friends would be ecstatic if SC hired Franklin. Their fanbase would openly revolt.

Maybe it's just me but it's a pretty shitty thing to do in the middle of the season if the smoke is coming from his camp.
