A proper VT/WVU Vent thread

I don't feel like scrolling thru all the comments in a "Fire Fuente" thread from a year ago so here's a new thread for everyone to complain.

I'll start:

It's hard to have a successful offense when we never throw the ball down field unless we're left with no other choice and also we run options but our QB never keeps the ball. Three games in, wins and a loss now, its a trend in all of them

I think there's a whole lot more going on behind the scenes. On the TSP podcast following that press conference both Will and Chris stated that their source inside the Athletic Department, one that consistently feeds them very accurate information, told them Fu was gone and that's what the press conference was about.

They thought that Whit was caught in an awful position, one that wouldn't allow him to actually do his job. I still have faith in Whit, especially after listening to that podcast. The sentiment among larger donors (I know a couple) is that there is a problem that is bigger than the Athletic Department.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I remember that podcast and heard it's more than just Babcock but the way he trashed us (the message board fans) in that presser really pissed me off and rubbed me the wrong way.

If Whit can't do his job, why have faith in him? Honest question

The better question is, why have faith in the larger organization - in the person/people over him?

Is coronavirus over yet?

someone here on TKP said the same thing from their source

I think Sands is a problem

I'd suggest some coffee and a nap. This is a terrible take.

I might not appreciate the long leash Fuente seems to have, but I'm generally a big fan of Whit as the AD, especially with regard to the basketball program.

Coffee and a nap?? Bit of an oxymoron am I right bud lmao.

I read (don't remember where) that drinking a cup of coffee RIGHT before a nap actually helps you feel great upon waking up for said nap.

Vanilla play calling is predictable . Not stretching the field . Coach needs to take over play calling period.

Its insane how we played so horribly yet somehow still had a chance. 0-3 with 1st and goal inside the 5 and lose by 6

Danny is always open

Can I vent about our kicker? If we have confidence in him then we kick the 42 yarder early. Top that with him not missing a chip shot and it's a tie ball game! We took our kickers for granted the last few years

I definitely took our place kickers for granted with anything inside 40 yds. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

That miss right before the half was just a killer. I mean the way the rest of the game goes, we win with a chip shot FG at the end as we would have been able to kick earlier in the 4th if we were down by only 10. Even if you cannot say that the game would have unfolded the same way (which is correct) it was still such a momentum killer to come up with nothing on that last drive.

Hopefully he pulls it together going forward. Sure he is pretty let down.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

One thing I was wondering was whether he could have taken a delay of game to center out the kick. Can you reset the hash after a penalty?

It was such a short kick from the right hash that maybe be was not used to the angle.

So, I'm ready to move on from this Fuente experiment

I think the majority of hokie nation was ready last year. Most of those not in favor (I will put myself in this group) were mostly concerned with timing and funding.

I don't understand why we don't let Braxton pull on the read or attack the middle of the field in the passing game. In this game specifically we should have been rolling to the left side of the field to avoid the WVU DE who mauled us all game. Our offense becomes incredibly easy to defend when all we do is run or pass to the sidelines.

The few times this game we attacked the middle of the field we had tremendous success. It would open up the whole offense.

I have to assume they just don't trust Burmeister not to turn the ball over, and on read plays they don't want him to get hit. If that's the case, just stop calling reads.

he is playing hurt. watch his mannerisms between plays. the arm swing the hesitancy. theres no true backup cant lose him.

I'm still figuring this out.

Was doing the arm swing before UNC. Have been noticing that

"That's it guys. Let's get out of here. That cold drink's waitin' on us, let's go." - Mike Young after win no. 300.

theres no true backup cant lose him.

Scared money don't make money

He is TINY. I'm frustrated about both things too, but dude is small. Not like, "oh, look at his stats, he's 5'2 and 105 lbs" obvious kind of small. Most of the views we get during a game are from above, which makes it hard to discern size. During the 2nd game there was a view from the field in-between plays and BBs head doesn't come up to the O-line's shoulders. He's also relatively thin. He simply cannot see the middle of the field, period.

I can't say enough how proud I am of the players for never giving up. They really did leave it all out there (even though they did look uninspired for the entire first half). The way they fought back does speak volumes about something...

But I'm ready for this staff to go. I know we aren't Bama, Clemson, OSU, etc., but we have very littel pride right now and even less identity. I just want to see us establish some sort of identity that the fans can fall in love with again.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Our identity is predictable play calling on offense.

But I'm ready for this staff to go. I know we aren't Bama, Clemson, OSU, etc., but we have very littel pride right now and even less identity. I just want to see us establish some sort of identity that the fans can fall in love with again.

Outside of Clemson, the ACC is trash. It's just begging for another team to rise up.Even in our down period over the last 5 to 8 years, no one has really stepped up yet consistently. But someone will eventually and the longer we keep our current situation, the less likely that team will be us.

UNC has. It doesn't matter that we beat them this year, the coastal is there's for the foreseeable future

totally with you, I think WVU played 4 quarters. We played 2.5 (roughly)

ultimately that is a broad coaching issue.

I'm still figuring this out.

Our identity is, and always has been playing up or down to our competition, and thus excelling at mediocrity. Goes back to 1995.

^^^This, this and this. Was at tech before the bowl streak started left finally got out in 95. Man speaks the truth.

We need to figure this out as a program. Or else mediocrity leads to permanent mediocrity.

I'm afraid we're already there.

OC play calling hands down lost this game. We need a reckoning. If Fuente can't evaluate his staff, we need a new evaluator.

Um the defense gave up 14 points on 5 plays on the first two drives of the game. We get one stop there and we win.

The playcalling sucked at some critical points of the game, but our D should have never given up 27 points in the first place, especially on long drives like they had.

Ok, and what if we called a good offensive game that utilized our playmakers instead of the garbage that was just called. Or what if we capitalized on any number of plays within the 10 yard line that produced zero points.

Offensive play calling has been terrible, for years now... way more of a problem than two busted plays. We're those bad? Yes. But it's not the problem that keeps rearing it's ugly head.

What play maker didn't we utilize - I am asking seriously?

We threw to Tay, We threw to Trey, we threw a bunch to Caleb Smith who had a good game. Blackshear and Holston both had TDs. What other playmakers do we have?

We definitely need a "play" maker, bc right now, we only have seven plays.

#MakeTheMove . . . "Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

Guess you really love reverse sweeps to Tre instead of passing him the ball huh?

Trey was targeted several times, it wasn't just jet sweeps. He caught 2 passes and was overthrown at least 3 more times (was covered well on those.)

We watched a very different game I guess. I'm glad you are content with that play calling, you seem to be alone on that take though.

I never said I was content with the playcalling. I just don't think a 6 point loss on the road is reason for everyone to jump off a cliff.

Because we had the ball inside the 10 3 times and got 0 points. The offense isn't taking this team anywhere unless we find another star like Herbert to just run the ball.

(add if applicable) /s

Tre doesn't run clean routes and overall OC does not use many crossing routes. Kaleb was battling to get open for BB today and did a great job. He always blocks very well and is our best overall WR IMO. BB gets sacked because nobody is open...time to get young WRs on the field more often

I'm not sure crossing routes would have worked today, given WVU was playing zone. Our WR should have been finding the soft spots in the zone, which they didn't do.

Bb holds on to the ball too long I would point out. His release is slow and he can't see the field well.

"I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising..." - KP

This is one of those futile arguments where we try to parse many peoples reactions to different things happening in real time*. yes WVU hit big in the first quarter but I think it was pretty evident that things regressed to the mean going forward

*the first big hit was purely a great play call. it was a screen draw and the safety and LB both bit on the screen (which would have been snuffed or pick6'd) but they ran it with basically no one home.

I'm still figuring this out.

Much respect for Braxton, but he won't avoid injury much longer at this rate. Watching our offense must be discouraging for highly rated QB recruits. That's a big problem

He was stretching his right arm out a bunch before plays today. I'm guessing it was related to the hit he took on his back shoulder last game that we thought was close to targeting

Oh did you see the arm dangling almost limp after a couple plays? Cannot remember exactly when, but was after a run where he was hit. Was the non-throwing one.

He's been doing that since the first series against UNC fwiw

Hes been doing the arm thing consistently between plays every game. Could be just routine at this point after recovery but after seeing the hits, and tentative play calling/execution i wouldnt be surprised if hes not 100%

I'm still figuring this out.

Hopefully he doesn't just do it before passing plays.

#MakeTheMove . . . "Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

Burmeister deserves a lot of credit for taking the hits that he did, and making the plays that he played, but he also had two big misses on wide open receivers in the end zone before the end of the game, as well. Those hurt.

Burmiester played his butt off, Holston, Blackshear too. Our Oline sucked today, they were terrible, they could have stayed in Blacksburg for as well as they played.

Defense was mixed, Dax had some great plays after as horrible 2nd play of the game. When Waller got that Int I assumed we would win it because how could we not. We should have won that game.

EDIT: Oh and the team didn't give up when they could have. That defense got hit in the mouth and then only allowed 3 points 2nd half.

And I'll add Cornelson just needs to go as well as as whoever the WR coach is too. Tiresome that QBs and WR just don't develop year over year.

We Are The Virginia Tech Hokies...And We Play Football!

For all Burmeister's limitations he's willing to get plastered to make a play.

No because if he was willing to get plastered he would keep every now and then to keep the defense honest on the options.

WVU ignored him.

I have a feeling that's by design because of the lack of depth behind him. IIRC he kept it last year when there were other QBs to step in for him if necessary.

So, I have mixed feelings. Obviously, if it's wide open like that he needs to keep the damn ball. However, my major criticism the Jerod year was you can't beat the snot out of your QB every play and expect them to make good decisions in the 4th quarter, much less the 10th game. That was literally our game plan for beating the triple option, make the QB keep and tackle him. Had we not beat the shit out of him, Jerod may have stayed a second year. So, I'm on board with reducing hits on the QB. I think that is a better, more sustainable game plan. The thing with that plan, though, is you need to have playmakers around the QB who can hit openings and justify the handoff.

Evans was NEVER staying a second year. He said so as much.

Yeah I was thinking about the defense getting gashed early but then the second half looked much, much better.

o-line held their own til 4th quarter. I think the issue is scheme and/or route running by WR does not avail open targets for BB. He had plenty of time on most possessions

You assumed we'd win? You must be new

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Cornelson needs to go and if Fuente won't do it then Whit needs to be the one to pull the trigger and then hold Fuente accountable. There's zero excuse for the offensive play calling last week and today. Weak, unimaginative, zero ability to take advantage of the weapons we have.

BB3 is not a good QB. Yes, he's fast and he's evasive. The problem is that he doesn't have a good arm, he can't see the entire field, and after 3 years as a college QB it doesn't seem like he's getting better at going through his progression.

JHam needs to run the LB and DBU ragged on Monday until they remember how to tackle. This is the shit we saw at the end of Foster's tenure.

If it's on BB that's on the coaching staff for not being able to identify a qb at this point .

Agreed 100%. 4* college QBs still need to be developed and it's obvious that this group can't do it.

Washington Post writer Patrick Stevens agrees with your assessment of the final drive in his College Football Winners and Losers:

Virginia Tech: Completing the ACC Coastal Division's early afternoon trifecta, the No. 15 Hokies were on the cusp of erasing a 20-point deficit on the road, getting a first-and-goal at the West Virginia 3 in the final two minutes.

Then came an unimaginative series that included a rush for no gain, a rush for a loss of a yard and then two incompletions to seal a 27-21 loss to the Mountaineers.

Hint: We were a loser

He said it in response to being asked if he would take over playcalling from Cornelson after a bad loss last year (two years ago?)

Really really proud of the players for fighting back and playing through their mistakes.

Obviously WVU got really conservative in the second half, but thought the defensive adjustments were good.

Burmeister is the definition of grit. He obviously has his short comings, but overall I thought he did well.

The red zone play calling is what cost the game. In a vacuum this doesn't warrant firing anyone, but it is just so frustrating seeing what is seemingly an obvious fix, but people too scared or hands tied to even begin to correct it.

Also is a really weird mix of emotions. Feels like a blowout that we fought back in to, and a win that was gifted to us, but we refused at the same time.

I'm just hopeful at this point that we have a new coach next year. I'm tired of this team coming out flat in big games, and I'm tired of an offensive coordinator who consistently can't identify the weaknesses of another team/refuses to attack the weaknesses of another team.

Sorry, but if our offensive coordinator isn't picking up on trends that an amateur analyst (no offense to French, but in this context I'm considering amateur as not currently working for a football program) can, than that's just embarrassing.

I'm sad

I'm apathetic. (This is better for me but not good for an athletic department that depends on fan donations.)

Is it me or do we have no speed on O? RBs slow, WRs slow... No one threatens the D because our QB is scared to run...

I watched the highlight reel of the last WVU-VT game played at FedEx and the first thing I noticed was just how crisp that offense looked compared to what we are seeing now. Sure, it was a highlight reel so it was all the best plays but I just don't get the same sense of having a cohesive offense any more.

edit to embed the tweet, source is OX_VT

Think you could make a highlight reel as good from this game.....
yikes we've gotten bad

Man, that was a fun team.

I forgot how much Settle and Tremaine stood out. They were men among boys out there.

We haven't had a QB like Evans since he left. QP or Hooker should've been able to show some sort of improvement with our coaches. Now it doesn't even feel like the coaches have trusted any of our QBs to throw the ball in the middle of the field except for that RPO with the TE or RB leaking up the seam.

Meanwhile QP tossed this beauty today

These coaches just instill the fear of turnovers in everyone to the point where everyone is scared to do anything until we are losing and have to hit a big play. They need to let these players play.

It's not just you, and it's damn depressing.

Is this really the best we can do? Is it??? Are we just getting handled on the recruiting trail the way we are on the football field? Fuckin A, man. Unplugging from VT recruiting was the best decision I ever made, because 8 months ago, the answer to these questions was yes. It appears that answer hasn't changed.

I think the offense just takes forever to develop.

The play calls are too much motion and fakes for their own good.

Everything develops slower and then leaves BB to have less time to make a decision.

The players are just not put in good positions to make plays.

It's really very similar to the stone spring offense with nobody trying to move the ball forward

Gobble Gobble!

I think this proved the good and the bad of Fuente...

A bad coach puts you in that position in the first half, a good coach gives you a chance to win it.

I honestly think Fuente can lead this team, but we absolutely need better playcalling and QB coaching. If that means firing Corny I'm okay with that. If that means Fu taking over one of the two jobs (playcaller, QB coach) then okay. Maybe bring back another Coach Kill type.

Proud of battling back, shouldn't have gotten there in the first place, need just a little more.

There is no valid excuse for Corny to have a job tomorrow. I don't think BB had one keeper on the read option. Ya know where a great place for him to have one of those keepers? Inside the 5.

But no, let's ram him up our offensive linemen assholes on a shotgun fourth down call.

I wish the journalists covering this team had the balls to flat out ask Fu why Corny is calling the plays and how its justified.

What confused me during all the option plays was why we didn't use Blumrick there? Defense knew we were running, why not give a real threat to keep like we did last week?

Glad I turned it off after WVU went up 14-0. Hopefully, I'll find a little solace in others sucking too.

Hearing rumors out of Morgantown that WVU is going to offer Corn the Defensive Coordinator position. The first coach to ever stop a P5 team from scoring a single point after 12 plays in the red zone.

Game played out exactly like I expected, lucky to even have a chance to win...or rather, we should have won!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

A few things that drive me crazy that some might disagree with.

1. We turned it over 3 times on downs while in field goal range and lost by 6. Usually, while unpopular, you should take the points.

2. We go no huddle and snap it with less than 5 seconds on the play clock the entire game. Make your mind up, either go quick or huddle. No need for the entire team to be standing waiting in one spot for 30 seconds every down.

3. If Burmeister is never going to keep it on the read option take it out of the playbook. It's too slow developing if there is no threat of the QB running it.

1. So true, it hurts
2. Scared footballing by the coaches
3. That is CornFu's "read no-option" play

#MakeTheMove . . . "Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

We turned it over on downs 3 times- with football where I come from, if you kick 3 field goals, you could win the game. Novel idea huh. We wasted a great performance by the d in the second half

No guarantee we make those FGs. As much as we were down early and how it felt like the d had no answer, I can't fault going for it.

I am with you in that I can't fault the decision. I can fault the plays called...

The one time they tried to kick a FG it was missed, so I don't think you can assume they'd be made. That miss was killer too given how the game played out. You can't assume everything turns out the same way, but down 10 they probably kick instead of going for it down 13, and if they're down 3 at the end they go into OT with momentum.

We turned it over 3 times on downs while in field goal range and lost by 6. Usually, while unpopular, you should take the points.

I'll argue against this every time. The data say the opposite:

  • On fourth-and-1, go for it any place on the field where that is possible, starting at your 9-yard line.
  • On fourth-and-2, go for it everywhere beyond your 28-yard line.
  • On fourth-and-3, go for it almost everywhere beyond your 40.
  • On fourth-and-4, go for it between your 45 and your opponent's 29.
  • On fourth-and-5, go for it between midfield and your opponent's 33.
  • On fourth-and-6, go for it between your opponent's 47 and your opponent's 35.
  • On fourth-and-7, go for it between your opponent's 44 and your opponent's 36.
  • On fourth-and-8, go for it between your opponent's 41 and your opponent's 37.
  • On fourth-and-9, the only place I recommend going for it is around your opponent's 38.

Not to mention the fact that I don't think our kicker is the best...

Maybe these odds assume you have better than a 2% chance of making it.

In all honesty I tried to open the link and it said I need a subscription. However, I've seen several studies on this and, while all of them are assumptive, they say different things. I've always thought on the road you always take the points unless you are at the 1. Too much momentum for the crowd if your stuffed. And even if u make it you aren't guaranteed a TD.

Re #2. I was thinking about that last year, but it's been something I've focused on this year. I wonder WTF is going on. I think it's one of two things, neither of which is a good indication for the coaches:
1) Corny takes forever to figure out what play to call (nothing flows/nothing natural);
2) it is similar to Buds "check with me" defense where they call in the play and the players aren't trusted to audible on their own based on the defense shown, they have to check back to the sideline and wait for the adjustments to come in.

I will buck trend and send praises. Robinson and Blackshear looked like they wanted to win. BB wanted to but damn let the ball go or be a real run threat, the in between is killer.

Bad: most everything. Tre not getting open wont ever change at this point. Linemen need to get more push we cant throw. D-line is not for real. UNC was just really horrible.

Bottom line with the play calling is you have to take the handcuffs off BB. If you run a read, let him read. He left 5 touchdowns on the field where he could have walked in. There is no sense begging for more passing plays if BB isnt going to let it go.

Those refs sucked ass.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I don't think the staff is restricting BB. I think BB is afraid to pull the trigger. He started to look better in the second half. The Holston TD in the second half, he looked to at least 2 options before checking down.

I think he also developed some confidence in Caleb Smith as the game went on too. Hope to see more improvement next week.

He hit the ground with a loud thud!

Make fun of VT Football. Talk tons of shit. Say publicly how soft and weak we are. Say we are pussies and (unlike the WVa fans) we don't deserve to be able to marry out sister/cousin ... Say it all.

Now Fu, put it all up on the bulletin board. Of all the things that have annoyed me during Fu's tenure, one of the most infuriating is the team constantly coming out flat with no fire. Get the fire going! I want to see the team angry and hungry and to dominate the Spiders next game. Does not need to be 60-0, but just make it clear before halftime that the game is over.

Here's a crazy damn idea....

Afraid for BB to keep on the Zone Read for fear of getting hurt??

When inside scoring position, put Blumrick in the damned game!!!

Even after watching BB leave points on the field multiple times, this didn't occur to us???

Our offensive coaches have zero feel for what is happening on the field and they are strategic duncecaps.

Heck, should've tried running Hoffman at the end, fridge style!

Corny didn't play Blumrick because he thinks he hasn't mastered our 6 play playbook.

The most surprising thing was that on the last drive there wasn't a single end zone fade. I don't know if that counts as progress or not given what they called instead, but I had the tweet screaming about a dumbass fade pass typed and ready to go.

They were gonna run it at end of Half but WVU timeout interrupted it.

No other team has ever gifted us a victory today since Arkansas in the Belk Bowl. This time, we didn't finish.

I'm most upset about the strip sack. Run the ball, take the 3, then take the 3 after the Waller pick. Tie game, take our chances in OT.

Still got the season ahead of us. Our team showed heart--I'd say grit if we won, but we didn't. That's one big positive takeaway from today. Our locker room isn't as sour as past seasons. Dax said after the game, locker room has to stay together.

Oh, and this game needed Blumrick. That's on Corny. Keep #10 honest on WVU honest.

100%...put him in the game on any of those possessions inside the 10 and tell him to keep on the Zone Read and we get a completely undeserved win.

But that would actually require intelligence from our coaching staff.

I'm tired of this, really really tired of this

I forgot what this thread is about but fuck the offense. Fuck Fuente

VTMidge

Just checked. Still upset with how the offensive staff is not pulling their weight, and failing to setup their players for success.

This one hurts way more than ever losing to uva.

Sorry if this has already been said, but the most inexcusable failing today was coming away with *nothing* after Blackshear took that kickoff back 78 yards.

That could've been the game right there.

"... I think he played his nuts off. And you can quote me on that shit."

Need to flip the direction here and look at some positives.
1) the Hokies fought back and damn near pulled it off
2) lost a one score game in a hostile environment
3) legitimately we were 1 play from winning
4) Beamer's teams always (except for 99) had a clunker like this. In fact, MOST teams do every year

Regroup and knock richmond's head off

If this was truly year one I might let the offensive wo's pass but its year 6 and the same shit on the plate we've been served since jerod went pro. They cant develop a QB to a be a game breaker and their RB recruiting has been torrid. Lack of the ability to effectively run the ball on the road is a recipe for failure. Defensive staff should be pleased they kept us in the game so long but I would be a bit hacked that the offense couldnt hold up its end of the bargain again.

French please expose Corn in the film review this week

You need a film review? I am drinking 6 hours later and don't need film to say fuck Corny.

VTMidge

Oh I know I just assume he'll have some extra technical knowledge that will really expose how bad the last few series were

God dammit this game should be UVA level hate. They clearly wanted it more. Beyond fireable offense imo

That's kind of my take from this. Everyone on their side had this game circled and wanted to play it. A fair number of folks on our side didn't care/didn't want to play this game. And it seemed like those attitudes were reflected on the field for at least the first quarter. And we got fucked by it. Idc who it is, you play to win the game, and you stomp the gas pedal from kickoff to game over. This cutesy shit needs to stop.

Warning- Filter lost.

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

If Fuente were to cut ties with Corny or take over the offense I would still like to see how things play out this year. One of my biggest concerns was the recruiting. I'm hats a deal breaker when coupled with all the other issues. But it looks like that is turning around. Outside of Corny and Fuentes strange personality with being sociable and open, the Jham hire looks solid and a top 20 class for 2022 so far has me guardedly optimistic.

Overheard as Duke assistant coaches took elevator down from press box: “Guys, they stopped the run with a three-man front.” - David Teel Tweet 2018

I agree.

It's moving more slowly than I'd like, but it seems to me the right direction.

Agree with your thoughts. What gets me is this. It's FOOTBALL, when you need a few yards, you take a few yards! Line up and move them! Size and power are essentially even, so the question is this, "who has the will to win?" That's what I'm not seeing in this offense. I admit being emotional at this point.

...with spirits true and faithful...

Why our passing sucked for most the game: WVU played a Cover 2 D for most the game from what I could tell. Man to man converge was 7-10 yards off the line. The safety intention wasn't to cover deep, as they didn't respect it or acknowledge it even existed. They, along with the soft man to man, created a very small playing field in which created a "shooting fish in a barrel" box about 12+ yards deep and covered side line to side line. They gave us no room to execute a continuing drive like game plan. Add in, their 3 man pass rush penetration/blitzing and we had our anemic looking offense. If we ran the ball, the DB's and LB's were all close enough to the LOS box to bull rush our RB. Great defensive scheme if an O is going to sit their and not their mid to long range passes.

And...Cornphuck should have introduced the down field passing game in the 2nd quarter as an adjustment and not wait until we were down so much we had no other choice. Made us a one dimensional team either way.

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
"(David Teel) turned to The Athletic's Andy Bitter — we were standing right behind the end zone — and said, "If Burmeister pulls it here [on the read option], he'll walk in."
Maybe we should hire Teel to be our OC. Of course, he put in print what thousands were thinking.

This is the kind of crap that kills me.

Why can bystanders figure this out but not our Offensive Staff?

So either:
A) BB is being strongly encouraged to give on the zone-read to avoid extra hits
Or
B) he is 3+ yrs into the program and can't yet execute the ZR well

Either way, it's complete coaching failure.

On the surface option A makes sense. But, if the Defense knows that 90% of the time they can ignore the QB, the zone-read becomes hugely less effective. It's literally how the entire scheme works. Number two, you have a 6'5" 230+ lb #2 QB on the bench that would be a wonderful option to run the ZR, particularly inside the 10 yard line....yet you play him against MTSU and not WVU?

If option B is true, it says that our OC and QB coach is an utter dolt that can't even teach the basic concepts of his own offense. Sadly, at this point, I still think option B is in play.

I mean we suck at developing QBs. Not a single player we've had come in at that position had noticeably improved their game year over year, and most end up transferring because of their lack of development. And I don't mean this as a slight against the players.

I will not donate to Virginia Tech Athletics as long as Justin Fuente is the head coach of VT Football. Enough is enough.

The hc and oc aren't improving so I guess it shouldn't be expected the qb will either.

I know it wasn't against great competition, but QP threw an absolutely beautiful rainbow deep ball for a TD yesterday. Also Hooker came in and sparked Tennessee's offense against Pitt and had a big day yesterday as well as starter. Very poor reflection on this staff.

I honestly dont think BB is being given a choice to actually read it. I truly believe that its all smoke and its always going to be a handoff because our coaches down want to run BB even in game winning moments. Corny out wits himself again and not for the first time.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

There might be something to that.

But if that's the case, why run the option? Would that be called the LIMITED OPTION? Doesn't seem to maximize our own possibilities.

I honestly really wonder...and I say this as an avid fire corny Fuente camp supporter... trying to play devils advocate, do the coaches see/know something we don't? Hear me out here, but there has to be a reason they are doing this. The question really is what do they know or think think they know that we aren't being told that leads them to make these poop decisions?
Idk I'm so depressed about this. My wife asked me last month if I wanted to buy season tickets...I said no...
8 years ago I would have sold my left arm for season tickets. Now all I can think is, I don't have to drive 4 hours to be disappointed if I watch from my couch. How can we as fans be expected to give to a program that gives us heartburn to watch. It's embarrassing to go to reddit threads and see Bama and ohio state fans say things like "watched that game and 3 trips to 1st and goal with no points is a fireable offense here". Even casual observers are going wtf... I thought VT was a football school...
I guess I'm gonna have to wait till the program crashes and burns and they rebuild from scratch and then maybe I can start supporting it again.

If this were a one or two year deal...maybe? But it's been way too long to be a long con.

Serious question: Should a team that gets blown up running a jet sweep into the boundary on 3rd down from the 5 lose the right to have GRIT on their helmets?

Less serious question: Since coaches don't wear helmets, can we get Fu and Corn hats with whatever the opposite of GRIT is? (I'm really not sure what the opposite is/should be on their hat...COTTON BALL? YAWN? ROOKIE MODE? NATURE VALLEY GRANOLA BAR? DOWN COMFORTER?)

I think the opposite of grit is silk.

🔥⛲

No, no, no. Silk is actually strong. Wet toilet paper is what you're looking for.

yeah, I guess - when I think of grit, I think of sandpaper which is rough and abrasive. The opposite, to me, is something soft and gentle - therefore, silk. I don't think either describe any attributes of our football team TBH.

My vote is for Fu to wear one of those "I'm With Stupid" shirts while corny rocks a "MORON" hat.

It just sucks, man.

Every good thing the defense has done this year did not happen in that first half. Players who haven't made costly mistakes this year made costly mistakes.

The offense, namely the passing game, is just painful to watch. The receivers struggle to get open, but when they do, the quarterback is late to find them too offense. Everything about it is gimmicky and doesn't represent that of an FBS passing game whatsoever.

The season is clearly not over. We won against arguably the best team in the Coastal, and in a division that is consistently wide open, that's big. I just don't know if we have the horses to do it.

On top of all of that, I of course have to deal with the WVU fans whose team just won their biggest game since probably the Orange Bowl against Clemson. They'll probably stumble to 4-8 or 5-7, but they are just happy to have the Black Diamond Trophy.

I selfishly don't want us to fire Fuente for that very reason. If we engage in full reset mode, there is no way we get the trophy back next year. But for crying out loud, we can't throw the ball well enough to win as many football games as we should. I'm not even mad about the playcalling. Every fanbase in America hates its team's playcalling. The bottom line is, if you have receivers who can't get open, a quarterback who isn't seeing the field properly, and an offensive line that struggles in pass blocking, you will never pass the ball well. 2/3 of these things can be remedied by making an easy decision in replacing Cornelsen and Williams. I'm a little hesitant to part ways with Vice because I believe he is a good evaluator of talent and I like the mentality of the offensive line, but the guy needs to get in touch with some offensive line coaches and figure out what he needs to do improve our pass blocking.

I really, really, really hope that UNC game wasn't just another seemingly big win that meant nothing. 2003 Miami, 2014 Ohio State, 2018 Florida State (yes, I know that team was terrible, but at the time it was a big time win). UNC was a great look for the program between the crowd and the guys flying around and the win, but it means nothing if we 7-5 or 6-6 and miss the ACC Championship.

Smooth out the rough spots against Richmond, get people healthy during the bye, and try to jumpstart the team before we enter conference play. Do not roll over.

I didn't want to create a new thread but after his great game against UNC, Amare Barno had zero tackles against MTSU and WVU. Are there stats for how many snaps he played? Is there an injury that I'm unaware of that could explain this disappearance?

No other teams want Corn, which validates the observed ineptitude. Saban has been through - how many? - 6 or 7 OCs in 14 years or whatever it was. Hell, even Mike Young already lost a prized assistant coach. And then look who he brought in! The point is that if you are doing it right re. hiring competent staff you are going to have positive turnover. i.e. people leaving for bigger programs, more money, and/or promotion. Lather, rinse, repeat.

If you are not doing it right, and CJF is decidedly not, then you get stuck with a turd that NOBODY else wants. Keep the turd too long and you either a) tank your career, or b) bring your own program down so much that even if you do fire the turd then you cannot attract an upgrade. I fear we are at b), regardless of how many games are won the rest of this year.

Good point...I hadn't thought about this. If he was a good OC he would have gone somewhere else... or at least had interest from other places (Ala bud foster)

didn't CJF (perhaps JHam? Someone?) say that Corny showed plenty of loyalty to the program and didn't leave when he had a chance?

I believe that was Fuente. JHam said the same of Fuente in an interview this summer. Another poster mentioned that Corn had a job offer at the end of 2018 that he turned down. No clue what team offered though
