February..'96...the steak: ribeye, the whiskey:Lagavulin 16, the lady next to me: a bit**.....

I hate that this is the first comment but I love how good it is. Leg.

I mean...I dont really "like" the sentiment. I understand it.

but:

I love the execution.

I'm still figuring this out.

Ironic, since according to Fu, execution is the root of all our issues right now.

โ€œAlso, a microwave has never danced it's ass off to Jackie Wilson.โ€ - AssPocketFullOWhiskey

I know one of the big arguments to the play calling has been that the play was there, the players just didn't execute it. Looking at that in a game as it's playing is understandable, and is a valid point, but stepping back, we need to realize we've been saying that a LOT. And also realize that it's a coaches job to get the players to execute. So, regardless of whether it was play calling, execution, or a combination of both, our offense just put up 14 points against an FCS opponent. I like the win, especially given the point of how bad it would look if we lost, especially to recruits, but really?

Only saw the second half, but some of the recap on the broadcast made it sound like some of the decisions (subbing in QBs with no specific/obvious reason) seemed to contribute to a lack of consistency. so even beyond exectuion i'm not really sure why the coach is throwing a change up at his own team.

I'm still figuring this out.

Holy uninspired performance FAM!

(That's the nicest thing I can say right now. Good lord)

Fam!!! It all looks the same on the w/l column.

Fam, I listened to Laazer and mowed the lawn during the first half. The US is up 9-3 in the Ryder Cup. The Cardinals are going for 15 straight. Yeah there's problems with our football team but today is a good day.

Oof. I can't believe that we're still in the hunt for the Coastal.

Need to see some signs of life over the next two weeks before Notre Dame on offense. Not just words.

Hopefully we find our offense before we find the Coastal.

Perhaps Bye Week is the tune up game we've been waiting for!

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

I'm in pain, but FAM.

An ugly win is a good win. BUT, I don't think I've ever been as disappointed with a win. With the exception of Tre and Tayvion, the O was awful, again. BB missed several open receivers. It's going to be a stressful season.
Still, for this week, FAM!

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

And the defensive play

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

Agreed.

Not just today, but all season thus far.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Ehhh. I remember that Marcus Vick game against Temple that went to OT, and we won because they botched the extra point attempt. THAT was most disappointed I have ever been in a win.

I was at that missed extra point game against Temple. Was Vick there for that one? Thought it was later. But yeah, no matter who was there it was as close to a let-down win as you will get.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

actually it was Vick and Randall. This was the week after we lost on the road to Pitt against Larry Fitzgerald. The team was hungover and looked like they just wanted to sleepwalk to a W. This was also the last game we would win this season and go on to lose consecutive games against BC, UVA, and Cal (all of which were winnable).

The Maroon Swoon

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Thanks. I had forgotten Vick II was still there.

I think I was trying to forget a lot about that game and the rest of the season.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Is coronavirus over yet?

We won...so that's good.

BB missed quite a few big throws that would've given us great advantage early
The O-Line is not as good as I hoped
That fake punt was an idiotic call...you keep field position when you have the lead and your D is playing well.
Thankfully the coastal has no clear dominant team

I'm hoping the big takeaway is, BB needs to trust Tre in 50/50 balls (now determining if its 50/50 +/- might be a problem) but I really think he and Tay need to be the focal points of the offense if the running game is not going to be Herbet levels of gamebreaking (and missing the governor - sad face)

I'm still figuring this out.

Missing tre and others on wide open passes then throwing into triple coverage worries the hell out of me!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Agreed, my gripe with the coaches this week was the fake punt...I think a lot this game actually falls on the players not executing. If BB makes just a few of those off throws and the O-Line was competent we'd be all feeling different. That fake punt was so stupid though....

We Won! FAM

But defense had to keep us in a game against an FCS opponent. I wanted to see the second team in the third quarter because we were up multiple score, not because Fuente wanted to see what the backup would do with no prep on second and long inside the 10. Clue, it wasn't good.

We need to find an offense before ND and the rest of the conference comes calling.

BLECH!

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Fam - a win is a win, no matter how you are winning or what you are drinking.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Happy we won! Even happier that I went in a nice walk and didn't watch the game until the 4th quarter!

Win is a win, good for the players

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
โ€œI served in the United States Navy"

That was an awe inspiring performance. We truly play to the level of our opponents. 100 yds rushing is an impressive stat agsinst a fcs team.

318 yards total offense. 2 offensive TDs.

So bad

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

The saddest part is after watching the game, I am utterly shocked we eclipsed 300 TY.

does that include PR yardage?

I'm still figuring this out.

No, 318 total Offense (106rush/212 pass).

Additional 66 Punt Ret yds.

But here's a great (read:dismal) stat: Moore - 6 punts for 268 yds...we had 50 less punting yards than offensive yards.

I'm not an analytics expert, but that is the sign of a pathetic offensive output.

Haha thanks for the breakdown, I probably should have thrown the /s on there - was assuming based on the pedestrian play that it must have included the return yardage.

I'm still figuring this out.

But guys, they're the #21 ranked FCS school, so maybe that explains it...

S/

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

FAM! Not a great showing, but a win nonetheless. Defense played well enough to keep the second half quiet.

On to the bye week.

Reluctant.... FAM......

Although, there's always a silver lining, Justin Fuente has a new #1 Fan!!

bbgif"

Y'all, after digesting the game, it might be the last win of the season so we should enjoy it as much as possible.

.. sigh, fuck man.

That was my thought walking back to the car after the game. Ugly thought to be having walking away from a win.

No disrespect, but that's a bit dramatic. Our defense is still very good. There is clearly things to improve on offense, but saying we lose out is hyperbole. I still contend we win the coastal in spite of an offense that is very frustrating to watch. Some of that is the coastal, but some is the team.

Let's see how this ages..

Agreed, look around the coastal division and there is no dominant squad...the only one that may qualify we have a win over.

Pitt would like a word

Agreed that Pitt is likely the main contender (not a believer in Miami this year for a variety of reason, but I could be proven wrong).

That Pitt game will be huge is Hokies can win - would be an equivalent of a 2 game lead in coastal.

They did hang 69 (nice) points on an inferior team so...
(EDIT: referring to Miami)

I'm still figuring this out.

You mean the team that lost to Western Michigan last week? I get your point but my point is everyone in the coastal is beatable and I believe in our D and special teams. Our offense is not good, but we still can have a good season

This season feels a lotttt like the 2008 season to me

Gobble Till You Wobble

YUUUUUUP

I'm still figuring this out.

I would be thrilled with that

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I disagree - this team has far superior leadership and the defense is way better than 2018.

The offense clearly has issues, but has a chance to improve as the year goes along. Many many teams under Beamer won with this formula. This year isn't different.

I'm not saying we are playoff contenders, but there are some distinct differences with this team - see Smith's comments last week and the defense performance over 4 games.

I said 2008 not 2018. Those were 2 verryyyy different teams haha

Gobble Till You Wobble

My apologies - clearly I should have read more closely. And yes, agreed very different scenarios

Uhhhhh.... Forget it... he's rolling.

But under Beamer when we were getting wins and relying on our defense, we always seemed to have at the very least a solid RB. Not sure it's an apples to apples comparison.

I'm not purely comparing to all Beamer years, just 2008. Evan's didn't come on strong until the Maryland game and our defense was good but not elite. Today just felt a lot like the western Kentucky game that year.

Gobble Till You Wobble

The only reason you can make this comparison is because the offense is bad. The situation is entirely different. In 2008, we had a true Sophomore QB (albeit a blue chip in Tyrod) and a very young and unproven supporting cast around him. We currently have an offense of virtually all veteran players who have been in the system for 3-4 years. And the offense is putrid.

I definitely get that. I'm talking about just comparing one season. Not the state of the program moving forward.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

And the ND QB left the game with an injury that maybe serious. From Larry Brown Sports:

Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan suffered an apparent knee injury in his return to Wisconsin and had to leave Saturday's game.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

Bad news part 1: No one like injuries, so hoping he gets back
Bad news part 2: Backup looked REALLY good

How many times has that happened with ND. A decent to mediocre starter gets injured to be replaced by an electric game breaker. I think Book was the latest.

(This could absolutely be some sort of bias on my part and more of a why cant brian figure it out in practice sort of things)

EDIT: granted Mertz really put that game away for ND in the last quarter

I'm still figuring this out.

An update said the x-ray proved to be negative. And implied he would be available for future games.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

Fam? This was the worst possible outcome of the game.

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

Losing to Richmond would have been worse. They'd bring it up every time we played an FCS team like they do with JMU. That loss would linger long after Fuente is gone and would make us look bad to people who don't know dick about VT and just look at the box scores. Not to mention it wouldn't help VA recruits take us seriously. Some things are more important than hoping for a coaching change.

I would have rather lost to force whits hand. No one would remember an fcs loss with a lame duck coach as his last game.

Beamer lost to jmu when we were winning ten games a year. Completely different scenario

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

At this point, the writing is probably on the wall that he's gone after the season. We should not be struggling with FCS teams in Year 6. Period.

I will not donate to Virginia Tech Athletics as long as Justin Fuente is the head coach of VT Football. Enough is enough.

I would give him another year if Corny gets dropped.....

Warning- Filter lost.

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

Why?

Free Hugh

Sorry your response gave me a violent frustrated reaction based on my 3 year old's current approach to conversation.

not to put words in other peoples mouths but probably because even a casual observer can see that the players, that most people (and many posters here) have shown much love for, have very clearly shown their appreciation for Fu. Hes a family guy and yeah maybe he plays things close to the vest and isnt a good interview but he does want what is best for the team and the program?

I'm still figuring this out.

Counterpoint: His job isn't just to want what is best for the team and the program. If it was, there are probably a few hundred people on this board that would be qualified.

His job is to win football games, and he's been pretty bad at that the last few years.

His job is to win football games, and he's been pretty bad at that the last few years.

Counterpoint: If this is the measure then he has met that measure since he started as the head coach till now. Here is his W/L for his time at VT:
YEAR W-L
2016 10-4
2017 9-4
2018 6-7
2019 8-5
2020 5-6
2021 3-1
TOTAL 41-27

What you can say is that there has been no progress on the offensive side of the ball, the reason we hired him. Year 6 against an FCS team and nobody that is paid to talk about football was sure of what we were doing on offense.

As a fan, my measure is if Corn still has a job as OC at the end of the year then he needs to be fired. If he wises up and cans Corn then I'll give him another year. I don't think he is a terrible fit for VT but just has decided to hitch his job to his buddies in ability to elevate his skills to this level.

yeah. I'd say being under .500 in 2 of the last 4 years counts as "he's been pretty bad at that for the last few years". Extra points for managing to achieve this while playing in the weakest division and the weakest conference in the power 5.

And we'll be extremely lucky to end this season above 500. I mean, we just scored 14 offensive points against an FCS school at home. Our offensive problems have been obvious for years, Fuente has had his chance to make adjustments. At this point, we need to clean the slate.

Because even my 9 year old son is starting to call plays depending on situations and down/distance. We weren't able to watch today, but it sounds like I missed more of the same thing we've been griping about for the last 2+ years.

Warning- Filter lost.

I'm still just really annoyed we went out and hired "an offensive minded coach" to still see games like this . Props to the team winning this game .

Big meh. Airing it out provided some diversity in the passing game (with mixed results), but whats most frustrating was either the lack of desire or in-ability to to just run the ball on an fcs team. The re-shuffling on the O-line is no doubt a big part of that. Hopefully a bye week helps that unit find some consistency again.

I mean, if you told me at the beginning of the year we would be 3-1 after four games, I would take it.

But yeah, this is bad.

Well I am happy they won. Special teams did a nice job today. And the defense did a good job, especially on 3rd downs.

Nah, the game was done before 3.

Tre Turner had his best game as a Hokie. Hopefully this is a sign of him reaching his potential and a harbinger of good things to come.

However, Braxton's ability to consistently hit him (or any of our receivers) is a major concern. I've never seen a college QB look so impressive one play or one drive and so inept the next. Ryan Willis was also a little like that... may that is becoming our M.O.

I noticed on 3 plays, where BB3 completely missed open receivers. On the near interception to Turner, slot receiver was open on a deep out. There were 2 roll outs where he missed Kaleb Smith and Drake D cause his eyes were glued to Blackshear or Holston. He's not seeing the field.

I'd be interested to see Knox get a manageable drive, the play call on his INT was horeshit at that spot on the field.

Blumrick has been money in the red zone, and should have seen action against WVU. I like this wildcat package, and we will need it the next few weeks.
