It's that time of year again...With the Chili Bowl Nationals kicking off today and wrapping up Saturday night. IMSA with the Roar before the 24 the weekend of 1/22 and the Rolex 24 the following weekend. NASCAR setting up shop at Daytona in February, things are going to get going in a hurry.

No news, but I did see this posted this morning, and... oof what a good pic

In slight news I saw that Ferrari and McLaren are going to be using a pullrod front suspension with the 2022 car, which is something they both used about 6-8 years ago, leading some to suspect they might be onto something regarding ground effects and how it impacts airflow with the new model.

Yea pullrod front seems to be something that any time there is major regulation change, gets kicked around by the engineers. Maybe with the new aero balance, the teams will get it to work. All teams will eventually converge on the best solution, just a matter of who nails it first!

In terms of schedule, F1 pre-season testing begins 23 Feb in Barcelona. Expect full looks at each team's new cars early Feb. Much to look forward to in 2022!

With the first 2022 race scheduled for 20 March, that would project a Netflix release date on 9 March 2022.

However, given the following:

  • All three above Netflix DTS release dates (2019-2021) were Fridays
  • 9 March 2022 occurs on a Wednesday
  • Two of the three above deltas were shorter than 11 days

...my expert prognostication for the release of Netflix's Drive to Survive, Season 4, will be on Friday, 11 March.

I just don't understand what they are doing with that race. That track is small to the point of being a joke. Even if it's not a wreckfest, it's just going to be who can effectively idle their car the fastest for a few hours.

Let's not be too harsh yet. You may be right and the race be a stinker. But, and a big BUT it is, a quarter to a third mile track around a football field is no joke. BOWMAN GRAY STADIUM!!! Too watch the modifieds turn laps sub 14 seconds around Winston-Salem States football field is a sight to behold. It is NASCAR's longest running weekly race track.

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

I'm excited for it and will definitely be watching. I applaud NASCAR for trying something different (like they did running the Daytona road course for the Clash last year). I just think they struggle to run more than 10% of this race under green...I hope I'm wrong and they put on a great show.

Also, it's January 15th and I'm sitting here drinking bourbon and watching racing...it's a good day!

Some reddit sleuths zoomed in on Zak's phone and basically confirmed pull rod front suspension.

Also, that's one sexy sounding Merc engine.

I feel like the next few years the Merc engine is going to dominate. Rb/Honda moved up their 22 engine to 21. Merc did not, and with the engine freeze starting before Race #1 this year (albeit reliability/safety upgrades allowed), I think Merc has set up well for a few years more dominance.

E10 fuel introduction this year is said to reduce HP. Mercedes and Petronas have hinted at regaining that loss back. Not to mention, reliability updates identified in 21 that should be fixed in 22 version, and any other upgrades they have made for 22 that will sure to be in before the freeze begins (increased turbo volume, better cooling, etc.)

*Edit* Looks like Honda is now backtracking and staying on to 2025. Things getting interesting!

I never in a million years thought I'd be excited to see a F1 car unveiling...yet here I am clicking on links trying to get my fix.

We've got a big one this weekend

Michelin Pilot Sport Challenge series runs Friday at 1:35pm too.

Interesting how there are several different body styles participating in this race. Look at just the front row. You have a Porsche with classical Porsche stylings on the outside, a Corvette with something similar to the current Corvette front ends in the middle, and a Cadillac with deep aero channels flanking the driver's seat, similar to the Acura behind it.

IMSA's multi-class racing is great. With all these cars on track at the same time, they're not necessarily competing with everyone else on track but you get races within the race for each class. It's evolving slightly this year with GTLM going away and having GTD Pro and GTD (Am). Next year the DPi class will be replaced with LMH/LMDh that has common spec/rules with WEC.

This race is an absolute bucket list experience for anyone interested in motorsports. It's phenomenal. The fan access at IMSA events is IMO the most access you will get at a sporting event, even when just a GA ticket. This race is a bit more controlled but a GA ticket will get you access to the grandstands and infield and there are shuttles to take you between. If anyone is near Daytona this weekend, I highly recommend swinging by and checking this out.

honestly as a huge lego enthusiast I'm a little underwhelmed. I think the price point is a little high for the #of pieces, I don't think it looks as good as the other lego vehicles

At the $180 price point that comes out to $0.125 per piece which is in keeping with the range and just slightly higher than the average of $0.11 per piece. I think it doesn't look too bad...there's only so much they can do with the pieces they have without making a bunch of custom pieces for the set.

Haas released a few days ago...

This is a great deep dive in to some technical stuff from a former Mercedes aero engineer...

All with a grain of salt though, as Haas has confirmed this is a render from a model that was early in the design phase of the car, but some good insight into what direction they (and Ferrari) may go.

I'm trying to figure this out and haven't found it online. The track is asphalt but was it poured in there or did it get built in sections and can be assembled and disassembled? I'm fascinated.

Yeah, I did see that he acknowledged that he had spoken briefly to a couple of other teams before signing. Definitely sounds like his heart was always with McLaren though.

Fully believe that Merc had Lando targeted as the Lewis replacement, and now they probably have to look to Plan B

That said, if McLaren can't provide a car capable of challenging for a WDC by 2025, all bets are off on where he goes next.

One thing is for sure, Lando is the McLaren #1 driver going forward. Love Danny Ric but with Lando in the fold that long, they'd be stupid to not develop this next gen car to maximize Lando's potential, even if that's at the expense of the other driver.

Agreed. Danny Ric is a character and hopefully he's able to gel with the McLaren '22 car, but what he delivered for McLaren in '21 vs how much they're paying him doesn't match up.

All that said...I'll be rooting for McLaren this year, specifically Lando.

Reveals continue today with the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant 2022 car. (at a certain point, the names get comically long with the sponsors)

As opposed to the Haas and Red Bull reveals, this is the actual car that that AM is running this year.

Much more square and boxy compared to the Haas reveal (at least Haas went with a render based on early concept of their interpretation compared to RB which just slapped a livery on the FOM show car). LOVE the addition of the "louvres" (gills). Much more cooling focused than Haas concept. Overall a sharp looking car.

High ride height may mean trying to capitalize on directing air flow under the front wing and into the underbody, rather than over the front wing. Trade off between downforce in the center of car vs front wing? Might affect steering?

Will be interesting to see how this compares to McLaren and Mercedes (same PU's). We know the AM went with pushrod front and McLaren is pointing toward pullrod. With this AM car and pushrod, it seems to make sense that the ride height is higher, as springs are mounted at the top. If McLaren do indeed have pullrod, expect the front wing to be quite a bit lower and possibly different angle, as the springs are mounted at the bottom of the chassis.

There's no real suspension performance difference between the two, but pushrod is a bit lighter, but higher center of gravity. While pullrod is heavier, but lower center of gravity. It's all about how they may package the aero around this and where they direct airflow where the difference will be.

Will be interesting to see the direction Merc heads based on this.

Williams is going back to the pre-Martini navy blue, taking the pink accent from Aston Martin while they're at it. (though, not the only one, as Alpine is now partnered with BWT, which will bring the pink there as well)

Not a whole lot to say about the Alfa, difficult to discern thanks to the camo livery on the track shakedown. But, got the same gills as AM...

The Williams actually looks quite nice on track. Very Indycar front...

The closer we get to the beginning of the season the more excited I'm getting. I kinda came into '21 not knowing what to expect after watching DTS but with an almost full season under my belt and the new designs, I'm really looking forward to the '22 season and seeing how things shake out. I'm really hoping that Haas, Williams, and Alfa Romeo can close the gap on the mid-field so that there's less of a disparity between it and the backmarkers.

I'm right there with you from an experience standpoint, finishing S3 right before Monaco. I'd really like to see the midfield close up the gap to the front runners as well. I think the new financial regulations were supposed to help that, but there probably always be FRBs.

The finance regs help a bit, but with the exceptions made for driver and top 3 exec salaries, marketing (I think) budget, it really doesn't do as much to narrow things down when Mercedes/RB/etc. are hitting the limit and then exceeding it with the exceptions vs. Haas and Williams being under the limit including EVERYTHING.

You'll always have the front runners, the mid-field, and the back markers. I would just prefer to see less of a spread between them all.

Guenther getting pulled out of the press conference was a good call. He would have gotten beat up with questions he wouldn't have been able to give answers on.

It was always bullshit that F1 allowed HAAS to race the Russian flag as their livery when their rules outright forbid state sponsorship and nationalism. F1 and HAAS deserve all the criticism they are going to receive coming out of this.

You joke but that's exactly where my mind went when I read about this earlier today.

The US based F1 team being run by Russia, outside of all the jokes that creates, is actually really bad for F1 because it alienates the US base from their own team. If you could bring in Andretti to buy/run it and have it be a legitimate US based team with all that entails, it very well could end up being the best case for all parties involved.

It was to get around the Russian flag ban by CAS (same reason Russia competed under "ROC" at the Olympics).

As a true slap in the face, Haas denied it vehemently, and just stated it was being (American) patriotic with a red-white-and-blue livery. This was obviously BS, especially because they added a pinstripe to ensure it was visually white-blue-red (Russian flag) instead of just blue-red on white.

A lot of people were truly pissed off, including me. I've hoped for the downfall of Haas ever since.

Maybe Uralkali will get pissed off and pull their driver in retaliation. #WeCanOnlyDream

Not a rumor, but not an advisor. Putin held a summit with oligarchs to discuss crypto regulations in the same room where the security council voted to go into Ukraine. Putin went on a bit of a tangent about being forced to invade Ukraine. The oligarchs seemed very unhappy about being thereโ€”I know I wouldn't want to be on TV with Putin at the momentโ€”so their presence most likely wasn't optional.

Mazepin did privately meet with Putin two weeks ago to discuss business.

Great race day out here in SoCal... beautiful weather and views. Enjoyed our grandstand experience as well... good people all around. We drove the ModelX to the track (to the chagrin of my wife) which was super fun. It was nice to crank the tunes and not worry about the battery draining out. Chucking the football after the race and enjoying local IPAs while the traffic thinned out is our favorite race day tradition. Too bad my TRD boys had a rough day and of course Larson somehow won the race. The guy is so good...

On another note, Lego sold out of the McLaren F1 almost instantly. How rude!

Russian Grand Prix permanently canceled and will not be rescheduled (at least for now). Noteworthy, because they were set to movefrom Sochi to Igora Drive in Saint Petersberg in 2023.

Also, lots of rumors swirling this morning that Mazespin is out. Probably inevitable after he was banned from Silverstone, but it is still very much up in the air. According to reports, sounds like Enzo Fittipaldi will be replacing him this season, with a formal announcement to be made once they can finalize details with the Brazilian.

Other juicy rumors this morning that, Haas might have been looking for a way to sever ties anyway, as it sounds like Mazespin's dad (who is also a noted Putin advisor) had threatened to pull Uralkali funding from Haas over the season because he was convinced the team was giving Mick Schumacher better equipment than his son.

Actually cancelling the Russian GP and all future races is big news. It makes sense now that the initial response was to satisfy all of the questions and give the lawyers enough time to actually ensure that they could cancel without any issues.

I saw the rumors about Mazepin this morning and Sky seconded it with the Independent now the 3rd source that I've seen. Not going to shed a tear because it's not like he was a particularly good or well liked driver, but a rough break for sure. I'm interested in whether the Brazilian will have a seat for the full season or just until they can find someone else.

Fittipaldi is not at all a good driver. I can only imagine he's a placeholder until the conclusion of the bidding war amongst ultra-rich dads of shitty F2 drivers.

HAAS makes it official. Uralkali and Mazepin are permanently out.

Been to Phoenix once and we drove out there while they were in the middle of construction of the new grandstand layout. TV doesn't do that backdrop justice, absolutely gorgeous. Dying to get back out for a race.

Yep. I haven't been since the new layout. Newman was still racing the 39 so had to be close to 10 years ago I'd guess for me. Told my wife we need to go again yesterday. I eventually want to hit every track.

Based on what's been coming out since the announcement, that looks like the case (except they'll put actual lights on the car).

Terribly curious what engine package they'll use. If it's a Hendrick Chevy, surely they're working pretty close with Corvette on something. If they run a normal Cup engine it'll kick the bucket not even 1/3 thru the event lol

I am so pumped for tomorrow. 11am start of the F1 season which, admittedly, I haven't kept up much with, but am excited to see them get out there and let it all hang. All leading into the Cup boys taking on the new Atlanta layout (which, if you're not deep in to Nascar is excusable to not know what's happening there). For those who didn't watch the trucks and Xfinity dudes today, it's a faux superspeedway now. They repaved for the first time since the mid to late 90s when they reconfigured the track (not diving into the book this late for exact dates). In doing so, they cut the racing surface by about +-20ft, increased the banking in the turns 4-5 degrees to 29 degrees, and are running the superspeedway engine package. They're stacking it up. Superficially? Maybe. But that place was on life support. They've slapped their proverbial wiener on the table....after today, and a sellout crowd coming tomorrow, I expect fireworks.

Has Mercedes engine dominance come to an end with all the Merc supplied teams struggling? Have Merc led themselves down a dead end design path with their vertical side pods. Will Ferrari be able to fight down the stretch against RB. Will RB walk away with it all this year as their race pace advantage suggests? Is Haas truly in the mix to fight in the midfield? Will bottas lead alfa from backmarkers to contenders? What happened to McLaren?!?!

Absolutely fantastic racing between LeClerc and Verstappen in laps 15-20. Kudos to the designers of the new F1 car. This is what I'm sure they were hoping for.

Gotta think this was the absolute worst case scenario for RB this weekend. 3/4 of the RB powered cars had engine failures. Engines simply don't look capable of performing at peak levels for the full length of a GP. Could be a banner year for Ferrari power (looking at you Haas).

I would root for the Russians before I would root for Virginia.

Looks like the Merc engine is hot garbage as well, as 5 of the bottom 6, outside of the RedBull DNFs were using Merc engines, and by far the most notable of that bunch being the McLaren who surprisingly look to have the worst car in the field this year by a solid 3 seconds a lap

Williams is the worst. McLaren gambled with harder compounds than Williams and still split them, while also having the 12th and 16th fastest laps (Williams having 18th and 20th). Aston Martin might also be in contention for second-worst, depending on how well Seb can get the car to perform.

What a weird season this is going to be...

I dunno, Lando looked visibly shaken with just how awful the MCL36 was to drive in the postrace. Outright said it was frustrating to struggle with the car all weekend and the moment he had a lap he was happy with, he looked up to see his was 3 seconds off the pace. Just absolutely brutal for a team that was battling with Ferrari 3 months ago.

At a certain point, I wonder if the absolute mess that the Merc engine is this year is going to push them to moving forward with the rumored partnership with Audi/Porsche. They're never going to win by using a Merc engine when Merc is a constructor themselves, and they've had a good run with Porsche in the past. Who knows.

Speaking of Merc... I know Lewis was on the podium yesterday, but boy they are way off the pace. If RB can get just a little more reliability in their engines, Merc is a midfield team this year. The fact that all other Merc supplied cars were at the back likely shows there isn't much more room for improvement from the Silver Arrows. Who knows, but definitely an eye opening weekend, in the wrong ways for them, that's for sure.

RB stated that their issues were related to fuel pump problems. That doesn't sound like a difficult fix for them.

You do have to wonder if it is just the engine issues or if some of it is really all on McLaren. Remember, they were horrible for a couple years with the Honda Engine, blamed it all on Honda and switched to Renault, then RB changes to Honda from Renault and they start crushing it, and McLaren was still crap. They did have a great year last year, but have not really been consistent at all.

Even in IndyCar, which should theoretically be much easier to put together a car given their resources, they are still known as the hardest car to drive on the grid.

Merc will get the engine issues figured out, they did still finish 3-4 after both RB cars DNF'd so its not they they have fallen down to midfield or something.

It is nice to see Ferrarri do well in the first race, and 3 way constructers title plus maybe a 3rd title contender with Leclerec joining Lewis and Max in the fight this year will be amazing.

500 miles is a lot of miles. I'm about of the opinion that outside of Dega, Daytona, and the 600, and Southern 500, no race should be more than 400 miles at this point.

Just got back from the race and I was super pleased. Great tailgating weekend, got to talk to Chase for a second, and got my first sunburn of the year from being dumb. Wouldn't changed a thing.

I'm not sure how everyone remembers Atlanta, but I thought this one was way better than the old track where it was follow the leader on many of the races or a random pit strategy won it.

On a side note, something has to change with the blown tires.

That was an exclusively non-Hendrick Chevrolet problem. My guess is a bit of rear end setup magic that pushed the envelope just a little too far

Yeah much better than the old setup, where if whoever got the jump on the restart would sail off into 1 and be unreachable by the exit of 2. Only thing I would change is the distance. Idk how it felt in the stands, but holy smokes it felt like a 10hr race at the house lol 3hrs before the end of stage 2. Just thankful it wasn't a boring 4.5hr race.

It felt like the longest race I've ever been to and I've done the Coke 600 and Southern 500. But it was great weather and many more fans than I can remember in the past 5 or so years.

What a mess with the Saudi GP and yesterday's attack. Can't say that I'm surprised that there were certain threats by SA to keep the race going. I'll be interested to see what happens once the teams leave SA and aren't muzzled anymore.

As for the race...Hamilton out in Q1??? Looks like Ferrari still has a rocket and Red Bull isn't too far behind. I'm really hoping that KMag has another great race and that Norris can get into the points.

Damn I hope Mick is ok. The feed showed no replays and stayed far away from his car. 170+ mph sideways into a wall. Drivers said it last year too, this is not a safe track

I'm really interested to see what's said once everyone from the teams is out of Saudi Arabia. It sounds like everyone is biting their tongues for now.

Again, it seems like the design intent for the new F1 car is proving out, as there was some GREAT racing in the Saudi Arabian GP this weekend. The racing between Verstappen and LeClerc over the last several laps was amazing, as were several other battles over the course of the race (Alonzo/Ocon stood out to me).

I feel bad for Checo, though, with the ill-timed pit before the caution. What Latifi giveth, Latifi taketh away as well.

The SKY announcers have been all over it and they're right. Lead drivers actually have to work at holding their lead this year, as they can't just park it and let dirty air hold challengers at bay. The racing itself has been great.

Unfortunately the SKY production team keeps dicking the dog. The stupid replays this weekend in the middle of some awesome battles was maddening. You had the battle up front but they didn't show shit about the battle between Ocon and Norris for 6th.

I don't think that's the SKY production team. That's the F1 feed. They've commented on that on-air, that they wish the F1 feed would go back to the live action.

IIRC, F1 produces and directs the on-track video feed, and the broadcasters (SKY) put their own commentary on top. The exception being Monaco, who have their own director (the reason for the notably awful coverage every year at that race).

Agreed. Great race between Max & LeClerc yesterday, but at the expense of Checo. Poor guy got hit by the curse and couldn't break it. I was really surprised by the back-to-back issues with Danny Ric, Alonso, & Bottas. 3 different teams and 3 different powerplants all crapped out in roughly the same lap.

We'll see if Williams changes, but it would appear that whereas Haas has managed to produce a pretty good midfield car, Williams is still a backmarker.

Really seems like RB have the most power, Ferrari the most complete package, and Merc still...figuring it out?

I'm hopeful that Merc will be able to turn it around by Imola to get competitive and push the Scuderia and RB teams. Seems the porpoising is the major hurdle (which is now believed to be more of a suspension issue rather than purely aerodynamic). Having to run much higher than top teams, which is preventing them from unlocking any real performance. New floor supposedly next week in Australia, maybe that will help, with another major upgrade once the European run starts. It is fun watching them struggle a little bit.

Also, the Fernando/Ocon battle was great to see, although kind of screwed the team as it allowed those behind to catch up and eventually pass.

I'm honestly not convinced that Merc is going to be able to figure it out, because their power unit looks to be complete garbage. There's a reason that the bulk of the bottom of the grid in qualifying is Merc right now, despite the wide variety of chassis designs those teams have. The engine is just crap, and it has to be worrying that they are just so far behind everyone else. The silver arrows might be able to establish themselves as the best of the midfield, but I'm really doubtful that they'll be able to challenge either Ferrari or RedBull this year. The gap is just so large right now.

Agreed, but I'll reserve judgment until we get 1/4 of the way through the season. I think it's pretty damning on the Merc PU that the bottom 3 teams are all using it and obviously can't match the pace.

I wonder at what point the F1 market in America becomes overly saturated. We now have Austin, Miami and Las Vegas. Austin still sold out this year, even with Miami. Miami sold out, even with tickets starting at $1,800/ea. Will be interesting to see how this works longer term. I'm sure Austin is glad to have their 4-year contract wrapped up.

As someone who works with a bunch of F1 addicts they want more circuits in the US as its so hard to get tickets to the limited events with the sheer numbers of people going now a days.

Something like 400,000 people for Austin last year and Miami sold out in minutes. And Vegas could legitimately blow those numbers away given they'll be racing down the strip.

And, given the size of the US you could argue we still need at least one more race before you even consider market saturation. You could include Indy and still not overlap any of the current tracks, to be honest.

The prices for US GPs are so high, it would legitimately be cheaper in some cases to fly to Montreal or some of the European countries for a race. Then you get the added bonus of a nice vacation added on as well.

Yea, it's unfortunate. I'd pay that much money to go see the Hokies pay in the National Championship or the Giants in the Super Bowl (hahahahahahaha...*sob*) but not for an F1 race.

As to your second point, I really hope that F1 doesn't start chasing the US viewership and cancelling races in other countries to load up the US. One thing I actually like about F1 is that it spans the globe and I'd hate to see that change (unless it's taking races away from the Middle East).

I think that F1 should focus more on increasing the viewership levels within the US and seeing about getting a US driver on the circuit. As nationalistic as this country can be, a team with a half-decent US driver would probably be flush with cash so long as they had a PR/merchandising dept. that could keep up.

Uhh yeah, I don't like the thought that they were threatening to remove Spa, Monza, or Suzuka from the rotation. If you ask me, I'd love for them to add Hockenheim back as well to go along with Imola.

At the same time, I wouldn't be terribly upset if Miami or Vegas takes the place of Monaco. Don't get me wrong, love the location, but the race itself sucks. If they could eventually move Miami to their original location (around the hotels and across the bridge to the cruise terminals) that location alone could be epic, and... I mean the Vegas strip, come on.

As an aside, the rumored track for Vegas looks like it could produce some great racing. Long straights ending with tight corners should produce a good race. And, I reiterate, its along the Vegas Strip at night.

Lots of smoke around a possible McLaren Racing purchase by Audi being announced as early as this week. Apparently, Audi has upped their bid to โ‚ฌ650million, up from โ‚ฌ400million. This would specifically be for the F1 team, but I would assume it would include all their properties, including their consumer division as well as Indy and Extreme series.

So McLaren is no more and turns into Audi? Or would it become a subsidiary of Audi which is itself a subsidiary of VW?

Thats a good question, and there are very little details out there right now. With that said, if this all happens, it would make sense that Audi would treat McLaren in the same way that they treat all their brands right now in that, it would be owned by Audi but allowed to effectively be their own entity in the marketplace, much like Porsche, Lambo, VW, Bugatti, Bentley, etc.

What would make this very interesting is that Porsche are rumored to have recently agreed to be the powertrain supplier of RedBull starting in 2026. Should that happen, and should Audi then purchase McLaren, does this mean that Audi would have 2 powertrains in F1, or would the Porsche brand then be applied to McLaren, who then becomes the works team for the Audi group, and then provides powertrains to RedBull.

I would imagine the deal would be similar to that of Williams, owned and operated by Audi but maintain the McLaren name. With how historic the McLaren name is in F1, I can't see them giving it up. But then again, $$$ talks. We'll see what happens if this real.

Man kind of two boring races this weekend, imo

After the rain delay the race got going pretty late and it seemed some drivers struggled with the new car. I was surprised Denny was so bad. Race got pretty lackluster and I fell asleep. Luckily woke up for overtime but wasn't overly excited this time around. Sounds like drivers had their hands full though.

That was a pretty awesome race yesterday. Looks like Leclerc is everything that Ferrari had hoped he would be now that they've got a good car for him although tough go for the team with Sainz having those issues at the start and then spinning off into the gravel so early.

Red Bull has got their hands full with that power unit. Max's 2 DNFs in 3 races are a bad look but as Christian said after the race, better to improve the reliability of a fast engine than try to make a dog of an engine faster. Even though there have been comebacks from this far back, they don't have long though to figure it out though before they're out of contention for both the WCC and the WDC if the Ferrari stays as dominant as it's been thus far.

I think Albon should have gotten DotD. 57 laps on a set of hards with no appreciable drop-off on pace is a pretty impressive feat.

This is turning into a pretty fun year so far, even if my relative experience is minimal. Tighter following and better racing all around.

I mean at this point, the WDC is down to Leclerc vs Max with Max now needing that Ferrari engine to completely melt down over the remainder of the season and the WCC is essentially Ferrari's to lose. I don't see the Merc engine making enough strides the rest of the way for either Merc or McLaren to really get into anything more than sorting out the best of the midfield this season, but it does look like things might be settled in enough that they aren't completely screwed when the component freeze hits like it appeared could be the case a few weeks ago.

It was good to see the double points by McLaren. They've made some big strides the last few weeks, which pretty much just means that Ric coming down with COVID during presesason testing really screwed them over for the first couple races.

You don't think the Merc has enough to get into striking distance of Red Bull? Their pace wasn't up to Ferrari but neither was Red Bull's and there's wasn't a huge gap between the Mercs and Max/Checo.

I'm definitely glad to see McLaren in double points but Norris is on the record as saying that Albert Park was perfect for the car and that they'd expect to see the same issues that they saw in Bahrain and Jeddah as they move back to Europe. Maybe that's some of the gamesmanship, but Norris is usually a pretty straight shooter.

Regarding Merc catching RB? Only if the RB power unit remains unreliable. If RB can get that figured out (and I strongly suspect they will, as it sounds like its all been related to the fuel lines rather than the engine itself) then I don't think Merc will catch them. I do not believe Merc can catch Ferrari this year, and think the only ones who could are RedBull.

As for McLaren, possibly. They definitely have a lot of braking issues, which isn't something that would have bothered them in Australia, but it did show the rest of the package is up to par. They have their work cut out, but I wouldn't bet against them figuring it out sometime soon.

Fair points. RB has 1 race over the course of 3.5 weeks to get things figured out so the chances are pretty good that they can have it sorted out by Catalunya. I'm interested to know whether or not Hamilton was told not to challenge Russell or couldn't catch him (it sounded like the former).

I'm hoping that McLaren can be best of the rest with Merc in 4th and it doesn't look like Alpine is that far off the pace for that either. Kinda surprised that Haas wasn't there after the success that KMag had in the first two races.

I like that Albon was able to pit and only dropped from 7th to 10th, so he was able to stay in the points. But why was he required to pit in the first place? That seems like a stupid rule, especially since he'd completed 57/58 laps on one set of tires, at a decent race pace.

The rule is there to force teams to be strategic in their race planning. Why the teams have to use two DIFFERENT kinds of tire is kinda silly to me.

That said, I think (based of my limited exposure to the sport) that it's unusual for a tire to last the entire race without experiencing a severe decrease in performance. Hell, based on Baku last year, some of the tires didn't even make it the entire predicted lifespan (Max & Lance having their tires explode). I think it just shows that Albon drove a pretty spectacular race to manage the tires that well and not encounter pace issues.

Technically, pit stops aren't mandatory. What's mandatory is using two tire compoundsโ€”unless it's wet (at which point you no longer have to pit).

After F1 banned refueling (for safety)โ€”at a time when tires were so good they could last through the entire raceโ€”Bernie saw a lot of the strategy go out the window and knew it would be bad for the sport, so they introduced the forced pit stop. By requiring two different compounds you A) effectively force the pit and B) introduce an extra element of strategy with potential compound mismatches between rivals. Watching someone on softs desperately trying to overtake someone on mediums before their tires die off is more interesting than everyone on hards in a race-long procession.

Talladega was awesome. Amazed at the speeds they were finally able to pull off. 182mph pole lap then hitting 197 in the final laps. I mean, he had a solid 15-20 seconds on Lando for 3rd and Lando had a solid 8 seconds on Russell for 4th. That's how much better the RedBull and Ferrari cars are when they're running. Even Lando was joking in the cool down room that Leclerc should have stayed out after the crash because he probably still would have been faster than the McLaren, and there might actually have been a little truth to that.

Crashed out in Australia by himself, crashed with Ricciardo at Imola, and I think crashed in at least 2 of those practices as well. Has been a rough month or so for him.

Had a couple people ask me my thoughts on Logano's move...love it. He's a super aggressive dude. This is a super aggressive but also super finesse track. He did exactly what he had to do to win, which is something he hasn't been close to doing all year. Don't like the guy, but love the move.

That wasn't a move, he just flat out wrecked him. Bump and run or getting someone lose is one thing; wrecking them is another. Cheap move when he probably could've passed the 24 cleanly, but that's Joey.

I too think he would have passed the 24 cleanly. It looked like he had the momentum. But maybe he didn't see it that way (wink, wink) and did a hard bump and run for the win. I have nothing against Byron, and I don't dislike Joey, but you're right, that's just Joey. A little driver controversy never hurt the sport. I wouldn't mind seeing a few more confrontations.

I don't hate the move, but Joey having done it before is what I think is getting folks riled up more. Either way the set up for retaliation is there and extra eyes were drawn to Nacsar. A net positive to me.

As stated on the clip above, my problem is that it wasn't some atrocious move Byron made running him up a bit. Hell I hope everyone has seen the Busch Craven finish there. Electric stuff.

It could've set up for a better finish if raced differently. And Joey always claims to be the victim. But makes for good entertainment and gets Nascar in the news.

Interesting race this weekend. The producers really pumped up the Miami scene, both around the track and with shots of the city. Great start with Verstappen getting ahead of Sainz at the first turn. We had some good strategy calls with the Virtual Safety Car: both Russell staying out until the VSC dropped and Perez pitting under the VSC before the Safety Car bunched up the race. Good explanation by Horner that Verstappen had just passed the pit line when the VSC came out, and luckily for him the two Ferraris stayed out too, I wasn't sure why anybody stayed out, so I'm glad they put him on camera. Interesting slow pit stop by Norris that put him back out right in the midst of the DRS train, which ultimately screwed him. Had two races for podium positions right up to the end, which was exciting as all get out, even though both trailers were juuust a bit underpowered at the end. And what was with the decision to have the podium on the other side of the stadium? Yeah, having it over the statue of Marino was nice, but not worth all the extra time to get them there.

Is it just me, or are we seeing a lot of DRS-train-type bunching up in the latter part of the midfield this year? Is this just a consequence of the new car design (good enough to get close but not good enough to pass), or is that just the last two tracks that are hard to pass on?

Oh, and FUCK YOU to the producers to have Hamilton and Tom Brady interview, and showing scenes of the 28-3 Super Bowl. STILL NOT OVER THAT!

Not gonna lie. That ended up being a better race than I thought it was going to be. The Safety Car definitely helped in getting the field bunched back up, but even before then there was a lot more passing and side by side racing in this one than most races in recent memory. That track is surprisingly competitive, it could be a surprise banger of a race every year if things continue like this going forward.

3 observations.

1 - the Merc engine is problematic. Even with Merc having basically everything possible going their way, they still finished significantly behind RB and Ferrari. And, lets be honest, with the PU freeze coming, they have their work cut out for them in terms of getting to a competitive position, because they're very much on the verge of putting themselves out of it for the next 5 years. And if that happens, I wouldn't be shocked if McLaren goes shopping again.

2 - Its 100% down to Red Bull vs Ferrari this year, and Ferrari needs to be careful because RB looks like they have it figured out. If they really do have the raw speed advantage we saw this weekend along with the lack of porpoising, they're going to be very tough to beat, especially with the high speed tracks coming.

3 - McLaren has an awful day. That slow pit stop for Lando pretty much ruined any chance he had at points, and then Gasley completely going full Stroll with his situational awareness took them out. And Ric still struggling with that team is very much not a good sign going forward. Massively disappointing result for them.

Some of the more expert analysis puts the Merc engine about 20 BHP down from the top two. Not the greatest position to be in for them and customers, however not completely insurmountable given that the ICE portion is frozen but they have a few weeks (2nd homologation deadline is Sept 1) to work on the electronics side. Unfortunately, all the other teams will be working on it too.

I think their Aero is what's hurting them more, though. We saw in Miami that there's flashes of this Merc being extremely competitive (FP1 and FP2), even with a power deficit. They brought some minor tweaks this week that kind of crawled them back to their original starting position, with a large floor upgrade planned in Barcelona.

Definitely a 2 horse (or a Horse and Bull) race for the championship this year, with Merc comfortably taking 3rd. RB bought some big updates a couple races ago that have propelled them a bit, the Scuderia has waited and will bring major upgrades at Barcelona as well. These next couple of races is really going show what the true competitive order of the grid will be, once all the teams have gotten their major upgrades in. The cost cap is going to come in to play soon I'm sure. One thing is for certain though, the straight line speed of the RB is not to be fucked with.

Definitely feel for the Papaya boys, got pretty unlucky in this one. Alpine quietly had a great day, albeit ALO getting the time penalty for messing up multiple people's races. And Albon dragging that Williams into the points!

Given how far that car has consistently been off the pace in every race this year, I'm not sure I can put much weight into what they did in FP1 and FP2. For all we know they could have been testing low fuel times on grippy tires trying to get those quick laps for possible sponsorship purposes (McLaren has been known to do that from time to time). Once its time for Sprint or Race, they aren't even close to the top, and it takes some luck for them to gap the midfield

It's a fair point, they've never been anywhere near that level of pace in ANY session thus far this season. It's possible they were running a higher engine mode than others at the time.

I think it's more that the tweaks have brought them back comfortably in 3rd. There was an interesting graphic on the average lap time gap to leader over the races thus far, and it was clear that Merc fell further behind after the first race while other teams improved. I think what they showed in Miami kind of leapfrogged them back to where they started and are maintaining that same gap we saw from the beginning, which is actually a pretty decent improvement. It shows that their correlation and models/simulations are on the right track, which could potentially bode well for the supposed floor upgrade being brought in Barcelona. The big question is will it be enough to as everyone else is bringing updates as well in the next few races.

Then again, this could all be track dependent. F1 has so many variables.

It was a surprisingly better race than I was expecting although I feel bad for Lando. Just a poor call to bring him in when there's a chance that he's going to end up in the middle of a battle and lose because his tires aren't up to temp.

As for the venue itself...not surprised by everything, after all, it is Miami. The post race interviewer was god awful and should never be allowed to interview again. It sounded like he was struggling to form the sentences or that he was getting them piped into his ear and couldn't understand them. So awkward. The police escort was stupid and the football helmets...I mean, the Dolphins haven't been relevant since the 70s/80s and the U has been a shell of itself for the last 2 decades.

Looking forward to Spain and seeing what upgrades Ferrari bring. The RB is fast, but a stock Ferrari vs. an upgrade RB is good racing, can't wait to see what happens when they've both been upgraded.

Albon in the Williams is having a great season thus far and really goes to show how bad Latifi really is. Be interested to see what happens with the driver lineup as the season goes on. Williams has said they don't need his money anymore, wonder who they'll get...?

Haas had a good showing and then some bad luck at the end set them back. Good to see them actually competitive this year vs. the mess that was last year.

Did you see the grid walk? Brundle mistaking Banchero for Mahomes was one of the most wonderfully awkward moments I've watched play out in real time. He's just so out of his element in the US that its hysterical to watch. And the kicker is that he's desperately trying to find a notable athlete not even realizing Dwayne Wade passed him 2 or 3 times in the minutes surrounding.

It was hilarious, and also a touch sad they threw him out there like that. If ESPN is paying as much as they are for Sky Sports broadcast, let some ESPN personalities do this. I did love the DJ Khaled moment. It was great.

Yesterday was the first time I've watched an F1 race. The pomp and circumstance was fun but I thought the race was boring until the yellow bunched up the field. Also, I didn't understand the rules. What was the DRS stuff?

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

No fault of your own but not a super exciting track to introduce you to F1.

DRS is the drag reduction system, a slot in the rear wing that opens at predetermined places on the track when a car is within 1 second of the car in front. The advantage is less drag, thus more speed, and it promotes overtaking. Because of the aerodynamics for the cars throwing out so much turbulent/dirty air, this is/was a way to promote and ensure closer racing.

F1 cars have grown in length and width significantly over the last decade, so they could always shrink them back down too... as some of the historic tracks from the early days of F1 are much too narrow for 2 wide racing throughout
