2024 TV/Movie/Streaming Discussion Thread

I looked on the tracker, and didn't see anything since the 2023 TV/Movie Discussion thread, so I decided to create one for 2024.

Soo....what are you watching these days?

My original impetus for posting were these two new shows:

Shogun so far has been great. It's on cable on F/X, and streaming on Hulu, but since it's on cable, episodes are only available week-to-week. They're up through Episode 5 of 10 right now, and the first four have been fantastic. A few changes from the books, but nothing really major to this point. A favorite book of mine, so the Game of Thrones style budget and cinematic feel have been welcomed.

Haven't even seen this trailer yet (I'm at work), but I read a review on this, and it sounds interesting. Liu Cixin's Three Body Problem was a fantastic sci-fi read. One of the most difficult parts of the book, though, was that it was set in China, and the names made it harder for western audiences to follow, even with a Dramatis Personae in the front matter. (It really broke immersion having to refer back to that every so often.) The Netflix show is set in Oxford, so that difficulty has been removed. The story was so good, though, that I'm really looking forward to this, which is good, as it dropped today on Netflix. Check it out!

But since this is a new thread covering 2024, I gotta say that Dune 2 has me excited. Yes, I know, it's been out for a bit, but I have kids, so it's not easy to go watch a movie opening weekend. We're trying to work a rewatch of the first Dune movie in and take the kids (11 and 14) with us, so that might be fun. Hope to see it on the big screen soon!

All that said, what are you all watching?

If you need a gap to fill waiting for the next season of Slow Horses, check out The Gentlemen. Guy Ritchie, and it's Layer Cake if it were a series instead of a movie.

I 2nd this. Its pretty entertaining if you like Guy Ritchie's style.

I went into Poor Things with exactly zero knowledge of it. So, I guess I thought it was some simple, period piece or something.

Dunno what I was expecting, but...

If you play it, they will win.

I read a review that started with "what if you could have sex with Frankenstein..." and that was enough to know I could pass on that one.

NSFW for sure, but Emma Stone is 100% qualified.

Spectacular movie. I went in completely blind and nearly walked out during the very first scene. Happy I stuck around though, I absolutely loved it.

gonna lock this one up, use the existing thread that DFW posted above
