OT: Richmond Native, Former VT Target/ND LB suing Notre Dame

A lawsuit filed by former Irish linebacker Douglas Randolph, obtained by The Indianapolis Star, states that Notre Dame did not provide results of an MRI that Randolph underwent after experiencing "numbness in his upper extremities" stemming from a hit in a practice drill in September 2015. Randolph played the entire 2015 season and later was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. He also might have permanent nerve damage in his neck, according to the lawsuit.

If this is true, this is extremely fucked up, Randolph could have been paralyzed. For context, spinal stenosis is the reason why David Wilson retired from the NFL.

I cannot understand why anyone would want to play for Brian Kelly. If he was just an asshole, whatever. But he's much more than an asshole. He literally killed a kid.

I think he's referencing then kid that was filming practice on an extremely windy day from one of those scissor lifts and it fell over.

"I made the decision that we could have a productive and safe practice outdoors," Kelly said Saturday at his news conference after Notre Dame's 28-27 loss to Tulsa. "Productive because the conditions ... although windy, were not unlike many days that I had practiced at other universities, including here at Notre Dame.

"We have systems in place to make certain and that deal with issues of safety. Clearly in this instance, they failed. We are in the process of examining all of those systems ...

"I can't emphasize enough how important it is that when you talk about taking your football team outside, those [safety-related] items are at the forefront of every coach's [thinking] -- not just me, not just at Notre Dame -- everybody in the country thinks about the same things. That's probably one area where we're all grappling with right now."

Kelly says the winds were windy but "not unlike many days he had practiced" in the past. Contrary to others saying Sullivan was on a "rickety structure in a windstorm described by many as the strongest in the Midwest in 70 years"

Brian Kelly was clearly only worried about the safety of his team in windy conditions on the ground. Not the 20 year old camera man lifted 40 feet into the air with 60 mph gusts.

Interesting stuff.
Not a lawyer (and not all of the details are reported), but Randolph may have some difficulty with the case.
IF he had been hit, and paralyzed, then there would be damages resultant from his diagnosis; which he alleges they withheld.
I'm not saying they shouldn't have informed him, considered a 'no-play' status, but its hard to be awarded damages for 'risk' of injury.
Now, his lawyers may be able to get a reward if they show pain and suffering... I'll leave that to the legal minds here.

As an aside, this is the same diagnosis that ended Cooper Manning's football career (Peyton and Eli's older brother) and some others.

I'm assuming the "permanent nerve damage" is a major component of what damages he is claiming.

I agree however Randolph's family makes things a little more interesting. He comes from a family of doctors so I'd like to think he consulted them before making the decision to sue.

Brian Kelly was ultimately responsible for a videographer's death, this poor kids MRI, and a bunch of mediocre seasons - get him out of there already.
