Recently I was reading Meet the Bagman (https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2014/4/10/5594348/college-foot...) with my fiance, at the end of the article the bagman calls to the bartender:
"Hey, man," he calls to the bartender.
"If I told you right now the [team] would win the SEC this fall and go to the Playoff, but only if you gave me 10 grand, would you do it?"
"Shit, man ... will you take a check?," the bartender asks. "But if you could really do that, I'd probably get the cash together in a day or two."
This lead her to ask me a slightly altered question, how much would you be willing to pay if it guaranteed that your Hokies would win a National Championship in football in the next 5 years? 2k, 5k, 7k, 10k? I wanted to pose this to the TKP community, I am very curious what the responses would be.

I'm just gonna enjoy Hokie football for what it is and what potential it has to be something better in the future. College football is a fucked up mess sometimes, I get it, but let's just hope for the best recruits we can get and coaches good enough to develop them into good players, then let's go to games on Saturdays and yell LET'S GO, HOKIES! to the tops of our fuckin lungs...
If that results in a Natty one day, then great that'd be fuckin incredible, but if not then okay.
I think I read somewhere that a playoff appearance nets you something like an additional $10-20m in net revenue on a given year, when you factor in broadcast share, bowl payout, merchandising bump, and additional ad revenue opportunities.
So... if you're asking the cost to guarantee a natty? High. Very high, and you'd still turn a profit.

I suppose if you were talking about a bagman, the real price would be your soul, and it really wouldn't guarantee a national championship.
If you're taking about donating to the Hokie Club, that's something that you can feel good about, even if it doesn't guarantee a national championship.
Lets also be honest, the NCAA's condemnation of someone's funneling money or benefits isnt exactly something that should weigh heavily on anyone's soul.
Isn't that the point? It's not about the actual punishment, its about being willing to compromise your ethics for wins.
