Suck it, James Franklin

Does this make us a big dog now?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

....excluding Clemson.

Gotta put that caveat out there.

The Dude Abides

I was at that game. I'm marrying into a Penn State family and in their defense, I would NOT want to have to play App State. Their QB and WR1 were electric all game long. Still no excuse for it being as close as it was, but wow, my hat off to the Mountaineers. You could hear a pin drop among 105,000 people after they went up 38-31.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

That is an insane jump for us. I think it is a little too much for us but damn I will take it.

Doesn't matter. Gotta beat everyone to take it all home. I'll take the high number early.

Embrace success.

I mean who would you put ahead of us after watching that game? There will be overreaction on both sides, to say FSU doesn't have talent isn't right. To say we don't? I think I watched a game where we put out more athleticism and raw talent than I have seen in a while.

@hokie_rd

WVU is an interesting discussion. Glad we are ahead of Mich St and Penn State though.

Yes. In an athletic contest VT prevailed. The bigger of the two words "lethal simplicity" turned out to be simplicity. Without any means of confusing our defense FSU needed to be faster and more physical and at that the top of the ACC that's a tall order.

We have a good three week stretch coming up that should allow the players to grow into the role of a #12 team. I think a ranking like this will build confidence and with the youth we have, confidence goes a long way.

Flip side, our young team wont really be facing much adversity over the next three games. Like....none. These teams are terrible. Hopefully they take everything seriously and act as if we are playing top competition.

Yeah, this may scare me more than if we had Duke, GT and Pitt for the next 3 games.

I think that I trust BudFu to not let a #12 ranking go to the kids heads, but this team is SO young and none of the current players were on teams that had this kind of success in the past. Keeping Frosh & Sophs focused isn't easy, especially when social media is telling them how great they are.

Don't give up on your dreams.

We've got a big time matchup on the horizon if both parties take care of business over the next four weeks.

Just bought my tickets today.

(add if applicable) /s

I bought 6 tickets last night thinking if we won, they would sky rocket.... if both teams are undefeated on 10/6, it should be a mad house.

"Nooooooooooo!"
~What happened?
"James Franklin to Virginia Tech...."
~Fuck me......*sigh*
"Oh my God.... They're gonna take all our recruits... like WTF bro...."
~*squints eyes in disbelief*

I actually thought they would too, I've been looking at particular ones on stubhub, the price was $30 less per ticket this morning which was strange...then I got absolutely destroyed by stubhub fees (20% of my total cost)

(add if applicable) /s

Nothing like accepting $1100 in tickets to hit "Buy Now" and see about $200 in additional fees....

How many tickets was that for?

EDIT: Sigh... I am not on the top of my game today. But for my own defense, I didn't sleep a whole lot last night for some reason or another.

Shh nobody tell HE, see if HE can figure it out on his or her own.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I think this is great example of why the high profile opening game is good. We were the only game in town that night, and put on a good show. If we did our work on Saturday, and it was a nooner with no one watching, we don't rise as high.

Great work getting VT on the big stage, and even better work to take advantage of it.

Others receiving votes:Utah 71, Oklahoma St. 62, Boston College 31, Texas A&M 29, Northwestern 28, Maryland 12, Mississippi 11, NC State 9, Florida St. 8, Memphis 6, Houston 6, Washington St. 6, Iowa St. 4, Kansas St. 3, Iowa 3, Hawaii 3, BYU 3, Fresno St. 1, Arkansas St. 1.

I mean come on, maybe they are better than they played last night, but how can you honestly come away from watching that offense get completely embarrassed like that and still think FSU is one of the 25 best teams in the country?

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

According to Taggart, all they have to do is block better. Only thing holding them back from a National Championship. /s

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Their play calling leaves a lot to be desired. He told his running back to run a read option play in a critical situation. That's just dumb. You don't take the ball out of your QBs hands there.

For all the talk in the offseason about "lethal simplicity" that was a pretty complicated play. That phrase might have been more for the defense but still.

I think we played lights out on defense but it's hard to deny how much FSU got in their own way. I remember yelling after that play "Really?! You burned a time out to come out with that ?"

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Someone had to give them a break since Bud would not.

The correct terminology is 'give them a pass'

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I choose to think that FSU is actually a really good football team and last night simply shows how good we are. Like chanting overrated at ranked teams we are beating, I say we give ourselves the credit instead of running down the competition.

can someone host this gif for future TKPing? It's a video in twitters format

Praise god for this

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I'm not culturally current, so this may be an actual dance that has a name that I don't (want to) know, but it looks like a pretty good representation of a strutting Tom to me.

I like it!

VT was so well prepared for the game they even took time to choreograph a flash mob during practice!

A lot can happen between now and 10/6, but it's always fun to speculate. Gameday in Blacksburg on 10/6 if both teams stay unbeaten?

Other games to consider (that stood out to me as possible Gameday locations):

Nebraska @ Wisconsin
Texas vs Oklahoma
FSU @ Miami (LOL kinda kidding, but Gameday has made weirder decisions)
Auburn @ Mississippi State (could be a great game with high stakes)
LSU @ Florida

I think we've got a pretty good shot.

Heck yeah -- thanks for sharing the tweet! Difficult not to look forward to this game already. So excited about this team's potential after what we saw last night.

You beat me to it. In fact, before this game, ESPN's FPI Matchup Predictor had Duke favored. We're now at 53.5%, but it's going to be a very very tough game.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Exactly. The only game we can win this week is this week's game.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

I know 1 and 0 is the mantra, but, for this week only, having beaten FSU on Monday and beating W&M on Saturday wouldn't that be 2 and 0 for the week.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

ESPN loves to highlight ND road games. I think the ABC 8PM game is all but a guarantee and gameday would be as well if both teams are undefeated.

Tied with Sept 25th, 2017 AP Poll (#12 prior to Clemson game) for highest ranking since 2012.

FAM!

The old Hokie fan version of myself cringes when we get ranked too high. That's the old me, that was an old regime. We control our own fate. We are in prime position. Let's go 1-0 this week and continue to climb, but I'm on this HYPE TRAIN all the way to January!

Go Hokies

Ranked #12!!

Let's Go

HOKIES

That's what a big time win vs a big time program on national tv will do. Listened a bit earlier to Brenden Hill's podcast with Brandon Flowers D Hall and Eddie Royal, and the guys just gushed about how that looked like the VT of old, playing with great speed, intensity, discipline, and attitude. This team is playing with an edge and has more athletes than we have had in a while.

I want to see this team continue to play with that angry edge this week. Want to see us drop the hammer and not let up. Also want to see us rotate in our depth on O and D. Can you imagine how much this experienced depth will help us going into ND and down the stretch in conference play. Look out, the schedule is set up well and this team could catch fire if we treat each week as a one game season.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I've been doing a lot of upvoting before getting even halfway through the comment since about 11:00 last night.

Loved the podcast, loved hearing how the former players were engaging with the young kids. "Give him a little chicken wing..." quote had me dying laughing. The part I hated, was our offense comparison to Georgia Tech 🤮

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

If we win out and play well and ND does the same thing we are almost guaranteed a #10 VT vs #6-7 ND game in week 6

LSU @ Auburn week 4
OSU @ PSU week 5
Stanford @ ND week 5
Wisc @ Iowa week 5 (could be an upset)

We deserve this. I wouldn't have had a problem if they'd put us at 14 behind Penn State and WVU, but we were more impressive than every team behind us in this ranking.

It's been a while since I've rooted against higher ranked teams from other conferences because I want to jump them. Normally I don't care if we're 20th or 18th or 16th. But now I want top 10 again. It's been too long.

Auburn plays LSU week 3 and ND plays Stanford week 5. If things shake right we should be top 10 vs a fringe top 5 ND. Would be another big time game.

(Granted, none of that matters unless we take care of our business first).

Big time $EC bias with South Carolina and Florida coming in. Also not at all sure why Miss St is in the top 20. If these guys at ESPN could rank the whole conference without getting called out they'd do it

Mississippi St finished last year ranked #19, going 9-4. This is the most talented team they've had since the 50s or something and their new head coach is a pretty smart offensive mind and he brought in a good defensive coordinator. I don't think it's ridiculous that they jumped in. I do agree about USCe and UF though.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Agreed. USCjr looked pretty good against Coastal Carolina. I'll say that again. USCjr looked good against COASTAL CAROLINA. By that logic UVa might as well be ranked too.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Well, they play UGA this weekend, so I would say they'll get pile-driven back to earth.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Yeah this, it's not a stretch to think that Miss St has the coaching to take a step

Florida and USC were on the verge and swamped bad teams, they will get the benefit of the doubt early in the year but who cares. If you think Miss St is bad you just weren't paying attention last season. They went 9-4 in by far the toughest division in the country and they played Georgia as their cross division game. 3 of their 4 losses were to Georgia, Alabama, and Auburn. They finished the year by beating Louisville without their entire coaching staff.

AP poll has nothing to do with ESPN. It's a compilation of dozens of individual journalists whose ballots are made public

.... I just realized that "jumps to #12" in the post title is a sandman pun 🤔 well done skutt

VB born, class of '14

Uh....... yeah. Mmmmmhm.

About time somebody count on to that!

Too high, but the exposure is welcome. Let's prove we deserve it when ND comes to town.
