Friend of mine in Georgia is calling this a GREAT pickup. Already a legend in Rome. They wanted him after Fields left but would only offer PWO. Doesn't have the flashy tools that camps grade off of, but he put up huge numbers against elite competition. There's a decently high ceiling here, and at the very least it's a guy who can provide depth
So is he a successor to QP2 or a contender to start after a redshirt year?
I'd say anyone is a contender to start next year given our circumstance
QP is going to start. That's why everyone is jumping ship right now.
Do you have sauces or is that conjecture? There are explanations for why HH and JJ left that don't include QP starting. I hope you're right, I just wouldn't be so certain.

Yeah I'll throw my hat in the ring. QP isn't starting next year unless something happens to RW or there is a dramatic change in his accuracy. I talk to "people that would know" about this topic often and I'm told it's Willis next year.
Of course that could change but my sources are, uh, players on the team haha
I don't have any #sauces but that is what my gut is telling me:
Scenario 1: open competition. 4 QBs, anyone can win means likely all 4 return or maybe HH transfers
Scenario 2: JJ is the known starter: RW stays because what else is he going to do. HH may leave but could stay to battle next season
Scenario 3: RW is named starter, JJ feels slighted and transfers but HH stays
Scenario 4: QP is named starter, JJ leaves knowing he is done, HH leaves knowing has similar eligibility to QP and will always be competing without getting starting reps
The fact that QP and RW are the only remaining QBs leads me to believe QP has been given the green light pending good spring workouts and fall camp. RW has no where to go so he has to stay along for the ride.
I think it's a little more complex than that. I believe Willis could grad transfer and compete for the starting job somewhere but he is down to his last year, seems to have a lot of confidence in himself, and likely feels pretty good about his chances to win the starting job. So my assessment would be:
Scenario 5: open competition. 4 QBs, anyone can win but RW and JJ seemingly have a slight advantage due to experience. JJ doesn't want to risk it as he believes he is guaranteed to see the field elsewhere. Behind them, QP seemingly has a slight advantage over HH given their playing time last season. HH realizes he almost certainly has less than a 25% chance to be the starter and wants to increase his odds elsewhere rather than likely be buried on the depth chart for at least another year (and at best a 50/50 chance he's not buried there for the rest of his career).
It's certainly possible and I won't discount any theory or opinion as we may never know. I just think JJ and HH would be risking an awful lot to start over in a new system as opposed to competing to reduce that "slight" advantage. And I mean they are risking a lot from the stand point that nothing (hypothetically) has been decided within the program. The fact that HH and JJ both put in their transfer requests around the same time would lead me to believe there was a meeting and things were made clear for them.
I was just surprised that HH would transfer and have to sit for a year as opposed to spending another year as a backup at Tech. He could have worked on his throwing motion, graduated and then been able to move to another program right away.
I'd speculate that he felt he had essentially no chance at being our starting QB this season and would rather start learning the system at his new school to increase his chances at being a starter in 2020. It seems like a pretty reasonable decision to me.

I've been rewatching FNL the TV show recently. He has a great QB name hope he plays as good.
Great pickup. Big time winner. Definitely knows the game and reads. Sleeper who provides depth at the position and should flourish under Fuente. I bet he grows some too judging by the size of his dad and frame

In all seriousness, there's no downside to this. Kid is a proven winner, proven leader. Has consistently played against - and generally, beaten - high quality competition as a four-year starter. Looks like a tough kid. Has a little bit of Daniel Jones in him (minus the overall size and big arm) - seems comfortable running the ball and laying a lick. Throws a very accurate ball. Would get a lot more zip on the ball if he actually kept his back foot on the ground to push off. Has some very basic technique flaws that need addressing, but you can't argue his accuracy and handle on his offensive system.
He seems like he'd be custom-built for JMU as a 'highly productive but undersized/athletically limited' pro-style QB. And yet, he chose VT, where no one expects him to provide much aside from depth - which tells me he's betting on himself. That kind of confidence can only push the guys in front of him.
Would be great to be able to redshirt him and see where a year in Hilgartsville takes him.
I can see him ending up in the 6-3, 210-215 neighborhood. Good size IMO

I'm fairly certain this kid isn't going to win a Heisman or anything like that, but it seems like he could be the type of kid to be a Baker Mayfield. Underrecruited but has good size, a great skill set for a quarterback, and a proven winner. Let him hit the weight room with Hilgart and the film room with Fuente, and this kid could become very good.

I think there is something there with this kid. It's all in how he develops I guess like the rest of them, but on the surface seems like a pretty good pickup.
Worried about the lack of offers to the big dogs, but if Georgia/LSU had interest late but no space, then that's certainly a good sign.
Prototype "game manager". What I like best in his highlights is how well he sees the field, probably better than some of the guys on the roster last year. But his passes have a lot of hang time...which is why his offer list up to now is what it is.
I like the comment earlier in the thread "which tells me he's betting on himself". I think that's accurate and I like that as well. Confident leaders do that sort of thing.

I don't know if I would put him in the game mananger box yet. He doesn't have the measurables to get the big ratings, which I get.
However, I would contend accuracy, intelligence and instincts (pocket awareness, anticipation, vision in chaos etc.) are the most important QB qualities. If you have decent athleticism and arm strength you can be really good to great while relying on those strengths.
Due to the timing of this offer and the lack of Power 5 offers this will be criticized. I get that and can see the criticism.
On the other hand, the opportunistic timing here due to Jackson/Hooker leaving could be a good thing. QB's who are projects can be hard and have a high bust rate in spite of the measurables. This kid has run a similar offense on a highly talented team in GA. He has great command of an offense and is highly competent with checks and changes on the field.
He will have to put in work in the weight room and the film room, but sometimes QB's with his qualities are better to take a chance on than a guy who has the measurables. Accuracy and Qb instincts are more important in my book, but time will tell
Strongly agree about accuracy, intelligence, and instincts. I'll forever hate Miami, but always respected Ken Dorsey. He's a good example of how much a QB with those traits can accomplish with some talent around him.
Totally agree on accuracy, intelligence, and instincts. Peyton Manning is one of the best qbs of all time and only had decent arm strength and zero speed and athleticism. But all his throws were on time and on target.
I understand your point but Peyton's speed and athleticism for an NFL player was low but he ran a 4.8 40 at the combine, it's not like he wouldn't own most people at a game of basketball or some other sport. Peyton never ran becuase why would you? Look what happened to Luck. Peyton is more important not getting hit.

A lot of JMU fans like to play on the fact that the FCS is technically Division 1, so they claim a lot of "D1 National Championships". Although that misses the obvious truth that FCS is clearly a lower subdivision.

A lot of folks have bad mouthed Sean Glennon, but I think it was primarily that he lacked the scrambling ability / flashiness of Tyrod Taylor and the Vick brothers that preceded him. Despite that shortcoming, he did win a lot of games for the HOKIES.
As much as I admired and respect Coach Beamer, I always thought that he should have allowed Glennon to replace Tyrod Taylor at the end of the bowl game against Tennessee for the victory formation(s) so that he could end his career on the field.
It would be difficult for him to end his career on the field against Tennessee when he exhausted his eligibility in the 2008 season.
You are right.. I was going off of memory; it was actually the 2009 Orange Bowl and Tech was playing Brian Kelly's Cincinnati Bearcats. Glennon was left standing on the sidelines while Tech was leading 20 to 7 while Tyrod was taking a knee during the last seconds of the game.
Tyrod was clearly the future, but I though Glennon deserved to take the field for the last few plays. Then again, I was not the coach and there might have been other things going on to which I have no insight.

I think that Georgia bowl game is also seared in our brains.... but we won an ACC title with him and I believe he was the MVP of the ACCCG against Matt Ryan.
Yeah we lost a game where we gave up 200 yards of offense, like 2ypc, and 9/21 passing because in the 2nd half we went Interception, interception, fumble, interception on four consecutive drives. One of Georgia's drives started at our 1 after an interception lol.

I personally didn't like him because he was a giant douche in college (although I've heard he's matured now).
My opinion about my own athletic skills greatly changed one day when I went to McComas to play some pick-up bball and found my self on a team with Glennon and Royal. I knew Royal was a phenomenal athlete (his jog was faster then my sprint), but what I wasn't expecting was how athletic Glennon was. Much faster and far more agile then I would have ever imagined. Gave me a whole new respect about how big and fast those defensive linemen are.
Yeah, and the Glennon/Tyrod years were the ones where OL seemed to be short for "Olé".
Yeah, I felt for Glennon as QB those years as the line couldn't even give him 1.5 seconds on a lot of plays.
It wasn't what Glennon lacked. It was that Glennon's tenure coincided with Curt Newsome's.
This sort of situation makes it even more paramount for the staff to win a 2020 stud RB. I think this year is the year although I still feel King will be a star provided he stays healthy.
This kid has the measurables, arm and accuracy and was playing, and beating, top level talent in GA. For four years. Help me understand why this kid wasn't rated higher and had only two D1 offers from us and Rutgers. After watching his film I don't think he should be considered a backup option.
Finally have gotten around to watching Knox's tape. Kid is a winner and makes plays through the air and with his feet. He may need to add a few pounds for longevity and may not be the Justin Fields that UGA or LSU is looking for, but think he could be a great fit in our offense down the road. Like most I am really surprised he didn't have more P5 offers, with a 21/0 TD/INT ratio and 11 rushing TD's for one of the best teams in arguably the best football state.
I would say this is a significant win considering the time in the recruiting cycle and the sudden need for QB's this late.
