Yup, my experience as well, but to be honest, I'm more likely to get a lettuce or hot dog commercial from the '50s right than to be able to remember all the words to TT, Highty Tighties or not. I know a lot of 'em though, and that'll have to do.

Really impressed with a lot of her answers. I think she has done a great job balancing gratitude and appreciation for Marquette and those players, respecting what has already been built at VT, and projecting to the future of what can be built.

We always talk about winning the press conference, and Coach Duffy certainly did that!
The classiness to thank Marquette, the classiness to acknowledge Kenny Brooks and what he built, to address the players who were staying, and then to make a point to shoutout Cayla and Liz that they are always welcome around the program.
I hope she has success, but I'm optimistic about the teams future and hope that she can keep it going!

I have to keep reminding myself that it's only women's college basketball and the kids have to do what they think is best for them. But I also take it personally when anyone considers Virginia Tech for any sport and any major and decides to go somewhere else. Have to take a deep breath and be a well adjusted adult.

I actually have no issues with the players. It sucks but I get it. I don't even have as much issue with Kenny about the job. It's the way he chose to do it and they way they continue to be doing it because you can't tell me that Hassett, Amoore and Strack announcing the same day the new coach was hired wasn't a news cycle hatchet job on the part of Brooks.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
regarding the players (Amore specifically, Strack to a lesser extent, not the signees) I have a different perspective. With Georgia following Kenny she's missing out on the opportunity to show she can win without him. She's going pro - that's a foregone conclusion, so she has the ability to focus on winning a title and not worry about draft stock. She's had 2 cracks at the NCAAT under Kenny and couldn't make it happen. What does she think is going to happen in another conference with a team under a rebuild? I the opportunity at Kentucky even on-par with what is left at Tech after Kenny raided the place? Or is this just about money?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
If Kenny gets all the pieces (Blue/Silva) and is able to add a couple more tough Forwards in the portal it's likely Kentucky is a better team talent wise than the Hokies next year barring Duffy pulling the two Marquette portal players in with her. Whether that talent comes together to win in the SEC is another question. He won't have to deal with two thirds of the top players at LSU and there are still rumors Staley may choose to retire and go into broadcasting if they win the championship this season. If that happens, Kenny's toughest competition is likely Texas next year. SCar would likely still be loaded but who knows with the portal if Staley leaves. SEC is very top heavy on the WBB side.
Edit: and if Kentucky's NIL money is so much better I would expect Kenny will be able to pull in top portal talent. Would not put it past him to try for the two Marquette players too.

My question is will Amoore actually include those new players in Kenny and her system? She has Strack in the Kitley role for the 2 man game. Who will she actually defer to other than Strack? She played too much hero ball at the end of the season without Kitley, even with Strack on the court. I feel like this was probably the worst career move for her (I could be completely wrong) and I just don't think she will see anymore success in March than she did at Tech.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
If Kenny has Silva and Strack on the court then they will use the High low plays you saw from Kitley and Strack. I do think Hassett will play very similar to how Traylor played for Hokies last year and Amoore integrated with Traylor pretty well. The piece that is Questionable is the Ekh/King role in the offense. Blue offers that but curious if Kenny will put her in as a freshman for significant minutes and Strack and Silva can both shoot the three which stretches defenses and could allow Amoore to get to the rim cleanly.

So my girlfriend and I were talking about HVL and the possibility of her landing at Kentucky which I don't think will happen because she wants to be a number one in an offense. I have no idea what duffy's style of play is but what if she picked up HVL? I know the thought is that Wenzel stayed because she wants to start right away, so this is what my reply to my girlfriend was " I think wenzel will start but likely not at point, run a three small two big line up with HVL at point, Wenzel and Eck at your wings, with a big and Micheaux". What are yall thoughts on a line up like that?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Assuming the existing roster comes back (which sounds like is likely at this point), without projecting transfers this is what I would expect:
1: Nelson/Suffren/Wenzel
2/3: Wenzel/Ekh/Baker
4: Baker/Micheaux/Hazelton
5: Micheaux/Hazelton
With 8 open scholarships (I bet we fill 6 and leave 2 open) I expect we look to add another wing or two, and add someone who is a true 5. I will be interested to see if Micheaux fits better as a 4 in Duffy's system than she did in Kenny's.
I see HZL as a volume shooter and below average distributor, so not really sure she would fit on our current projected roster heading into next year, either as a 1 or a 2.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Tech wasn't all that special after Kitley went out. If Brooks took the entire Tech roster over to Kentucky they still aren't going to be world beaters next season.
As crazy as it sounds, I think a lot of people are actually underestimating how integral Kitley was to Tech's status as an elite program. VT wasn't going to go to the Final 4 next season, under any scenario, not without Kitley. And Kentucky ain't going to the Final 4 next year either.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
And yes Kitley was a big single player but Kenny would now have three players in a frontcourt 6'4 or taller so won't be reliant on a big game from one. He will have four or five high volume scorers putting up points.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
But none of those players even approximates having the 3-time ACC Player of the year on your team. VT was going to take a step back next year, for a 100% certainty. I'm not saying we wouldn't have been good, but we weren't going to be top 10 good.
Elizabeth Kitley wasn't going to be walking through that door.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I don't think you're wrong Kitley was critical to the team... at the same time we were bringing in unprecedented size and talent into the roster so yeah maybe not a final four team next year but a higher floor and ceiling in the coming years.
All that said I'm pumped to see what Duffy can do the cabinet isn't bare and she's got some time to fill a few holes.

I don't think it matters what personnel KB has, his finesse style of play won't win him an SEC or NCAA title. Period. The officiating in WCBB is so atrocious that a physical team will almost always have an upper hand in most games, even one's where there is some talent discrepancy. He hasn't shown the ability to adjust in this way, so there's no reason to suggest he has the ability to do so.
I could be wrong, of course. But that is my take.

The officiating in WCBB is so atrocious that a physical team will almost always have an upper hand in most games
This is the craziest thing to me since I have been watching a lot more WCBB the last couple years, is how much they will let them just beat each other up. I have seen several no calls where it would be a flagrant foul in the men's game and it is just insane.

I like to read it as more a dig at Kenny, but I think there has to be a certain type of coach to succeed in Blacksburg. Outside of the limitations of the department, the school is isolated from major cities and resources, but I know when I stepped on campus, it did just feel right. The whole "This Is Home" thing can sound corny and can be hard to sell, but for some people it really is true. I think you need a coach that can understand that, can trust the environment around them, and find the players that also feel that way in order to mesh and be successful as a whole. Sure you could plop Mulkey in and bring in star players, but do you think they'd stay and have consistent success? Maybe. But I really think the environment and who Duffy is is a reason why we haven't seen the mass exodus (at least the way I expected).

Good core to build from
Also mentioned some are in class (Baker perhaps?). That core is young (minus Ekh and Micheaux) but pretty talented.

I know/knew about 80% of the chorus before reading DFW's post below with ALL the words
PS-Who knew there was a SECOND actual verse? It's never (to my recollection) played at games- just the first verse and chorus.

Every HT and at least 95% of non-band Corps alumni and cadets do
To be fair, I never learned the words to Tech Triumph. Never needed to, I just know how to play trumpet.
