Tony Ball Possible Candidate for WR Coach

His name along with Dugans is coming up also. We are going for a homerun hire it would seem. Whether it be Burden, Dugans or Ball all three bring a different aspect. Here is Balls Bio from Georgia and 247 the names that really pop out are AJ Green and Knowshon Moreno.

He also was VT WR coach from 1998 - 2005

I would like this hire also and although he is older than the other two candidates, even though we have been having a youth movement in the coaching staff the last couple of years he may have the loyalty that Frank Beamer is looking for in his final years.

I personally don't remember him from his time at Virginia Tech, but of course I was young and followed the game and not the ins and outs as much--So I don't really know a lot about this guy, but isn't it a red flag that someone who has been around for close to 30 years has never graduated from a positions coach to even get a chance to fail at a higher position?

Nah. Lots of great coaches have never gone beyond that level. Charley Wiles is about to enter his 20th season as our d-line coach.

ah, good point! Just from looking at the three names he is the one I am the least excited about.

By that rationale, you wouldn't want to hire Bud as your DC because he's never graduated from DC to HC.

Not true. Bud started as a OLB coach, moved to all I/O LB coach, and worked his way up to DC. This guy has taken lateral positions throughout his career. Also if a DC position opens Bud's name is usually one of the first two to pop up; this guy was never even on anyone's radar, granted it's for a position not as glamorous...not to mention if Bud was willing to start out at a smaller school he would have been gone years ago.

he would have been

I am not used to this being used correctly (I'm used to seeing something like 'would of been') so it actually kind of tripped me up when I read it...smh

Onward and upward

English, it'll get after ya.

Tony Ball had some "history" before he left VT the first time. I can't see him being the one . But in the year 2015 and it being VT...who knows ! At the most , the coach won't be here past 2016 or 17 . Short term position as I see it.

Was Ball not retained when Shottenheimer was brought in to replace Bobo?

He's still down here.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Still, this could be a reason why Ball is considering jumping ship. My question would be why Bobo didn't take Ball with him?

Well, its Colorado. The word on Ball was that when he left VT, he was looking for a more diverse community to live in. So that in itself might rule out Colorado. I believe Ball is from east Tennessee too, so he's a southerner.

But I don't think Ball is really a candidate at VT. He apparently loves UGA and the fans greatly respect him. If he's been retained by Shottenheimer, then there is no reason for him to make this move. I think "people have been hearing his name" either while dreaming or in the period where it wasn't clear if Shottenheimer would keep him. Appears he will be retained so he's not a likely candidate at VT.

Apparently he's a legitimate candidate as there is supposedly some tension between him and the new staff. Seems unlikely, but still a possibility.

Well, when there's a Schottenheimer on staff, you pretty much know which way things are headed.

That 2004-2005 WR corps may have been the best ever at Tech, so he would have that going for him

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Also coached the Flash. He's had a hands in shaping some memorable Hokie receivers.

I liked Coach Ball. I had him at the VT camp for 2 years when I was in high school - solid guy and could connect very well with a 15 year old athlete (back then at least.)

From what I remember, he was a main recruiter of DHall as well.

Stinespring was Hall's recruiter.

Having seen AJ Green in H.S. when I lived in Summerville, I can say I don't think it mattered who his WR coach was at the college level.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

I may be in the minority here but I would prefer Dugans or Burden over Ball.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

If you're in the minority, I'm right there with you.

Having said that, I'd still be quite happy with Ball coming home. Like I said elsewhere, the names getting thrown around have me very excited.

Why put Ball last...He left Tech to go to UGA and has been retained the whole time. That should say a lot. Also, I've heard UGA fans say that he is the best position coach on staff. I am excited about all of them.

I don't think you're in the minority here...

Colorado is as diverse as it gets. Probably didn't want to leave the south and all his recruiting contacts. I think any of these 3 guys would be great additions to the staff.
