2016 wide receiver Phillip Patterson verbally committed to Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon. The Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) product picked the Hokies over offers from Duke, PSU, ODU, UNC and Wake Forest. The 6-2, 180 pound prospect is rated as a 3-star recruit by the 247Sports Composite.

"Coach White told me about the offer, and I was just so excited, I didn't expect it at all," Patterson told The Key Play after he received his Tech offer in February. "It's a blessing. I definitely like the Hokies."
The versatile Patterson was originally offered as a defensive back, but he is now slotted as a wideout.
Patterson made his first visit to Virginia Tech last weekend and left impressed. WR coach Zohn Burden, who recruited Patterson when he was an assistant at ODU, ran point on Patterson's unofficial trip.
"It's been amazing," Patterson told The Key Play during his visit. "It's been everything I expected and even a little bit more."

Comments
Big kid (will add 20lbs without losing speed) who is excellent at high pointing the ball against tight coverage.
If French likee, me likee.
Also seems willing to block.
Great get. Welcome to Hokie Nation, Phillip!
Alright, welcome to the Orange & Maroon, Phillip!
This is easily Tom Cruise's best acting performance
He does his own stunts, so there's that.
Whatever it is, it's enough to get me to see Mission Impossible movies.
I'm seeing MI:5 this afternoon
Edit:
best Mission Impossible of the series, yet. I highly recommend seeing it
I miss that series. Would make fanboy comment about series finale, but would be spoiler for those enjoying it now.
Saw it yesterday, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
2016 wide receiver class is looking more and more impressive.
Our WR class sucks about as much as bacon, pie, or a Guinness milkshake.
Hint: all of those things definitely do not suck.
*EDIT* I'm really, really happy with the direction this subthread went. And for anyone who doubts, blend 3 1/2 scoops of choclate ice cream with a can of Guinness, then come back and let me know how much better your day just got.
wouldn't putting Guinness into a blender drive out all the nitrogen air that makes Guinness so delicious. I'll drink Guinness floats all day, everyday, until I die of a combination of diabetic coma, acute liver failure, and myocardial infarction, but I'm skeptical of Guinness milkshakes.
Have you ever tried a Milk Stout? Left Hand Brewing Nitro Milk Stout, is similar to Guinness but not as bitter at the end. I love that stuff, due to my previous job I had to taste many of beers, wines, liquors and cigars. That is how I found about this beer, try it you will like it very very much.
I haven't tried that one (at least that I can remember). I am a huge fan of the Milk stout from Belching Beaver in San Diego. And the Peanut Butter Milk Stout is amazing. Combination of PB milk stout and ice cream = best dessert ever.
I will definitely look for them next time out, thanks for the heads up
Lazy Magnolia brewing makes a sweet potato cream stout. I'm gonna say that again, Sweet Potato Cream Stout.
Left Hand's Nitro Milk Stout is one of my favorites. I'll actually drink it over Guinness most of the time.
This previous job of yours....you had to leave because you were offered millions of dollars and couldn't refuse???.....cause it sounds like a pretty great one.
I want that job!
I don't know how it has gone unsaid yet, but do they need more people at your previous job? I actually love trying many beers, wines, liquors, and cigars.
It's not the same since I have left. I am actually working on opening up my own store, but it would only be cigars for right now.
At the same time I am working on producing a large Cigar & Beer festival for next Sept. or Oct. I will likely need some people. So if your interested in driving up to Atlantic City, of course the workers will definitely get the opportunity to sample the beer and a nice stash of cigars.
Very nice. If we haven't moved by then I will have to take you up on that. I had some friends "serve" beer at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver for a few years. Suspiciously they only last for 2 hrs before they could no longer speak coherently and/or stand of their own free will
That is the best stout there IMO
It's almost always on tap at Rivermill. One of the easiest beer decisions of my life. $4.75 for a pint.
Also wanted to add, Red Robin has a Guinness milkshake on the menu.
Looks like raw route runner and very skinny, but does a great job a high pointing the ball and is a very good athlete. Great pickup.
Also, when's the last time we got a kid from Bayside? Have we ever?
Yes sir!!
Where is the running back in this class?
Took two last year and have a roster full already. Is it really a must have?
Very unlikely we take one this year.
I still think that Reggie Floyd is a natural running back, but the coaches seem to like him at safety. As others have said, we probably don't take any this year and try to pick someone up next year.
Khalan Laborn?
One can hope, but he's a big time national recruit and an Ocean Lakes/Thoroughbreds guy. Not a guy that we've traditionally gotten, but a better chance than in years past.
he's a '17 recruit
Personally way more concerned with picking up 2-3 more good OL recruits this cycle. We could go ohfer at tailback this year and not be terrible trouble. Mike Arnold's failure to qualify, on the other hand, has me concerned.
Me likey.
It's been a good week in summer recruiting.
Wow, Bayside kids never come to VT. I noticed UVA didn't offer, if bayside kids stay in state they usually go to the bad guys. Glad to get him, hopefully Burden can start a relationship with them for Tech.
Indian River where Beckett came from hasn't had a VT kid since Ore. I think it's a good trend.
We Bak!
UVA didn't offer? fuckem, they can suck on my ample Hokie tits
Tino Ells who?
Is there a line?
I was drunk while posting this but yes, there is a line and you're first.
Haha I've been doing it for 18 years as well!
From what I'm seeing on ESPN, Rivals, and 247, it looks like UVA did offer. Unless you guys have more information than I do to see that this is inaccurate.
Dude, another tall receiver catching touchdowns over UVA pussy corners? Yes sir!
I thinking we will definitely deny their pussy corners!!!
catching touchdowns over UVA pussy corners, is how pussy touchdowns are created
As a Bayside HS alum, this really makes me happy. Glad to see we finally landed a Marlin.
As someone who isn't, I'm glad we finally landed a Marlin, also.
PSU & ODU...
I guess those satellite camps are paying off already.
Was really upset when Moorehead left, but Burden has been very impressive so far.
Yes Burden has really impressed me so far.
As a side note, Patterson was a Virginia Thoroughbred guy. Still gonna be hard to land those types of guys, but the UVA pipeline there certainly seems to be shutting off and we at least seem to have a better chance with those kids.
With the bunk they have put on the field lately, if that doesnt shut off the pipeline, nothing will. Who would wanna go there right now
Legs to the last 4 posts
Wrong film, but reminds me of this:
"Bad dates."

lol @ the guys in the commitment video yelling "YEZZER"
Hold on now!

I followed VB recruiting a long time. Somebody slap me.
This is not getting the recognition it needs. Not only did we get a good player here, but this is a serious breakthrough similar to JC Coleman. Our guys are doing some good things on the trail. This is definitely one of those shot of tequila, throw down the hat deals for me.
Excellent, excellent, excellent!
There's been some staff turnover at Bayside recently, and it looks like there might be more. Can't hurt.
My experience is that the issue is, (when there is "an issue") is that it is more grass roots than the coaching staff. Parents, "concerned citizens" (often parents of players gone or players yet to come up) form the bulk of the crowd that is paying attention at the games, and they socialize, gossip, make opinions, start rumors, form hierarchies, and go with the flow. And when that flow goes against a particular school, it is hard to shut it off, and it persists for years.
I have been in the stands for over a hundred HS games in VB, and socialized with parents from kids at most of the schools there, at games, practices, award ceremonies, etc.
Everybody loves to talk, get riled up, and come to consensus - true or not - about the football world.
Bayside, obviously, was anti-VT. For a loooong time. As was Oscar Smith. You have to be in the stands, be on the practice fields, be among the adults that are influencing the decisions, to get a feel for what I am saying. Having a guy like this, seemingly humbled and excited about a VT offer, saying it was all he thought and then some at VT...this, to me, is nothing short of astounding. This is a big, big day. And some people at VT deserve big ass pats on the back.
No doubt, it's huge, for all of the reasons you mentioned. Still, when coaching staffs (not to mention the Thoroughbreds) are so openly anti-VT, it's much easier for those thoughts to spread. Hopefully this is the turning of the tide, similar to JC's commitment a few years ago.
Can someone explain to me what a Thoroughbred is in this context?
http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2013/february/27/va-thoroughbreds
I agree this is how it gets started. It is unfortunate because these people really dont have a clue. They are probably just mad about somebody who couldnt play dead that didnt get an offer somewhere down the line. VT hasnt done anything unfair to any students from these schools and UVa hasnt done anything special for them either. If you are anti-VT you wont fit in anyway. More than likely you dont have what it takes to be successful and work hard to do it.
No "The University of Virginia Tech" I like him
I am so excited about Patterson joining Hokie Nation. To all those who are griping about the world ending with Tino: get onboard. Denmark, Kumah, Patterson. Holloway and Snelson, let's get it. I'm so excited about out WR class. Let's go!
Snelson committed to Minnesota earlier today. Guess he doesn't mind the cold.
Wow...that's random. Forgot to mention Deablo as well. This is shaping up to be a fine wr class so far. We need to be working on getting Holloway onboard big time now.
Finally....I was getting worried that this thread was going to go on without a true bayside gif.
Cam Phillips and Ford were 3 stars weren't they? Just saying, those worked out pretty well.
Ford was a solid 4* by both ESPN and 247 and Cam Phillips was a 4* by 247 and Rivals. So they were a half-step above Patterson according to the recruiting services. That being said, this is a great and important get.
Ah, wasn't sure. Thanks for the correction.
As was Mark Irick and Thomas Smith.
I love the tangents our blogs go to. :-)
As others have mentioned, this is a HUGE get. Aside the fact that Patterson looks to be a damn good reciever, we haven't had a kid from Bayside in over 10 years. Meanwhile UVA has got 5 since 2010.
