Go Hokies!

What sucks is that Virginia has held the belt once for three games.

#Let's Go - Hokies

First I've seen of this.

This is amazing, one of the coolest things I've seen out of the college football community.

7 ACC Teams

Seven have held the belt including Duke and NC State! That VT has not held it is a crime! Beamer has the worst record in belt championships. 0-9. Three other coaches have 10 losses but they all have at least 15 wins and multiple reigns.

I am curious to know whether VT had any equivalent belt games prior to 1972.

#Let's Go - Hokies

Did I miss something?? It looks like we had it for 2 weeks starting on 11/10/2011??

6 year old threads will get after ya

Like holy resurrection Batman, I forgot I had even made this post.

In case you forgot

We now hold the College Football Belt Championship!!!!

Put this to the front!

#Let's Go - Hokies

What's the over/under on how long VT holds this belt?

This UNC game is worrisome, due to motivational factors, but on paper it should be an easy VT win. Can VT win out and keep the belt until next year?? Chances are pretty good, with Clemson the toughest potential game left this year.

One defense

of the belt!!

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Maybe

I'd like to see a unification of the belt with the crystal ball this year!

#Let's Go - Hokies

Virginia Tech has now held the belt for 17 consecutive days while defending it successfully twice.

lol #newhoos

Currently held by the 'eers

How far can they go with it?

#Let's Go - Hokies

Bump. First opportunity at the belt since 2011.

This is incredible.

@Fightin_Gobbler

Go Hokies

Go Falcons

Can someone put this into simpler terms. I don't have time at work to read that essay.

What's
Important
Now

Imagine the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers were presented a title belt for winning the championship. In September of 1972, UCLA beat Nebraska and "won" the "belt" from them. Michigan then beat UCLA a few weeks later and therefore took ownership of th belt. Moving through the years this belt has been on the line in every game that the belt holder played in. Tracing this history to present day, Clemson are the "Belt Holders". We can win it this weekend.

Thank you!

....i.....i still don't get this...what's going on?

Its like wrestling. You can only win the belt by beating the current belt holder.

They arbitrarily assigned the 1971 Nebraska team as the initial belt holder, and then moved it around as each belt holder lost.

@Fightin_Gobbler

Go Hokies

Go Falcons

Yea I think after requests they actually went back to Princeton-Rutgers and tracked it forward...and found out the title belt still ends up with the same current champion.

Yep:

But where do we start? Who would be the first Belt holder? Some wanted to go back to the first college football games between Princeton & Rutgers while others felt we should start with the 1936 Minnesota Golden Gophers since they were the first team to be named National Champions by the Associated Press. The decision was finally made to give the first Belt to the best college football team within our lifetime. Most of us were born in the early 1960's so there was really only one choice -- the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers...

...After receiving some feedback from our readers, we have checked the championship lineage if we had started The Belt with the 1936 Minnesota Golden Gophers as well as the first documented game between Princeton & Rutgers. The lineage confirmed what we expected in that the current champion is still the same. The Princeton/Rutgers lineage flowed directly to the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers as the Alabama Crimson Tide brought The Belt to the 1971 Orange Bowl. If we had started with the 1936 Minnesota Golden Gophers, the 2 lines converged on October 31, 1942. When Alabama traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to meet the Georgia Bulldogs, the Crimson Tide were the champions of the Princeton/Rutgers lineage while the Bulldogs held the Minnesota Belt. With Georgia's 21-10 victory, they became the unified, undisputed champion.

To be the man, you got to beat the man......

"Don't go to, go through"

It's a hypothetical belt initially awarded to Nebraska in 1972. They thought it was a good starting point since they are/were considered the greatest team of all time. From then on, whoever beats the belt holder gets the belt. We last held the belt in 2011. We can now win it back.

There's also the Champions of Life Belt

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I prefer Reddit's since that will converge with the CFB Belt eventually. More about moral victories!

Any version will eventually converge.

But there's something about declaring yourself champion, and then promptly losing.

Yeah but if you do it by results ATS there's a chance they can diverge. By your method they converge and will always remain that way.

This isn't the right method though. The Champions of Life belt is held by the team that loses but covers the spread. Thus achieving a moral victory.

Georgia Tech currently holds the belt after losing to Tennessee in their opener but covering the spread.

Somebody did the math, and although the guys who originally conceived the college football belt started it with '72 Nebraska, a belt starting with Princeton/Rutgers in 1869 would have found its way to the. '72 Huskers. So you can trace the belt all the way back to the first game ever played if you want.

I think

that we should bring them back.

Goddamnit

You beat me by like 10 minutes.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

while we're at it, can we go to a purely text based format where each comment only shows the title and you have a separate page to read the rest?

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Just wanted to point out that Mike O'Cain (every Hokies' favorite QB coach/offensive coordinator) held the belt as head coach at NC State in 1999 and went 3-1 while holding it.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

We have another opportunity at the Belt, as long as Miami does not lose this weekend!

Speaking of which, is that game on a 6 day hold?

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I'd say that game has a chance at being the Gameday site but Alabama-LSU is also that day so LOLNOPE!

And Bedlam. And NCSU-Clemson. And Iowa State-WV. And Stanford-Wazzou. And PSU-MSU.

That weekend is going to be incredible

Rip his freaking head off!
