The season kicked off a bit predictably as Notre Dame obliterated Navy in the early game from Ireland.
Nothing as compelling filling up the PM, but at least the games are close for the most part. (I almost wrote "watchable", but I can't find the USC game on YouTube TV with their sports upgrade package).
Jason Brown, who got beat out for our QB1 by Grant Wells last season is absolutely going off in the Jackson State/ SC State game.
Thought I'd start a thread just to get in the practice of it.
Sort of buried in yesterday's Prysser was news that long time starting tight end Nick Gallo will miss the first week and perhaps longer of the season. What changes will that bring to the Hokies offense?
#Hokies coach Brent Pry announces on the Triumph NIL livestream that Grant Wells will start at quarterback in the Sept. 2 season opener against ODU.Notes Bob Schick will start at right guard with Xavier Chaplin (LT), Braelin Moore (LG), Kaden Moore (C), Parker Clements (RT).— Damien Sordelett (@DamienSordelett) August 23, 2023
Normally this time of year, I am looking to preview the Hokies season opener opponent. Unfortunately, the Old Dominion team that will visit Lane Stadium in a couple of weeks is so radically different from last season, it will be a bit of a mystery for how the Monarchs will look Labor Day weekend.
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — One person has been killed and another injured in an apparent explosion that leveled a home overnight in Mooresville, just off Lake Norman, according to Director of Fire Services and Emergency Management for Iredell Kent Greene.
Authorities confirm with Queen City News that both victims were male. Their identities are being withheld at this time, pending family notification.
The injured person, who was seen exiting the property as the first emergency crews arrived at the scene, was transported to Atrium Health CMC with non-life-threatening injuries, Greene said.
The deceased person was recovered as crews were searching the debris.
My thoughts:
The B12 beat us to the punch on the most practical expansion candidates. Adding only 2 Western schools to the ACC is ridiculous. I see only one chance that ACC expansion could work, ASSUMING it would force a new TV contract:

Texas-A&M-NIL-shutdown-by-IRS
The decision to shut down the 12th Man+ Fund came after the IRS released a memo on June 9, which told NIL collectives their function doesn't fit within the confines of tax-exempt status. The 12th Man+ Fund attempted to reward donors with athletic department points and tax benefits in exchange for donations to provide NIL compensation to athletes.
Quick roster note: VMI LB transfer Stone Snyder is no longer with the team, the #Hokies confirm. He wasn't at media day or practice Tuesday, termed "unavailable" at the time. He arrived in Blacksburg as a walk-on after being a three-time FCS All-American with the Keydets.— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 10, 2023
Maybe even more important: The university would arrive at a reduced rate. Employing a rich donor base and a healthy desire to advance to the Power Four level, the university is open to forgoing conference distribution pay for its first several years in a new league. SMU officials held similar conversations with Pac-12 administrators.
That is a very interesting wrinkle that makes it a more tenable situation for current league members.
I noted Clements discussing using more simplistic zone schemes. Some of the Instagram footage from last week showed zone blocking drills, and I noticed the emphasis Ron Crook had on contact points, angles, and maintaining leg drive. On a rep with Kaden Moore, Moore kept his feet moving at contact (with very vocal encouragement from Coach Crook) and had to adjust to the movement of the defender to stay engaged.
I am trying it again. I just so happen to have the afternoon off and VT football blessed us with a live streamed Pry and Friends press conference scheduled for 12:45pm. VT football has completed 2 of their 5 scheduled "mini-camps" and should be getting a better idea of how the depth chart is shaping up for this Fall.
