In Justin Fuente's first season as head coach, Virginia Tech broke its fair share of offensive records. Still, there were bumps in the road throughout the season. The running game never gained any measure of consistency, due partially to substandard blocking from the skill position players. The passing game put up big numbers, but at the same time it was a collection of mismatched parts. Fuente and Brad Cornelsen's air attack heavily features screens, short passes, and back shoulder throws where receivers are expected to generate yards after the catch. Jerod Evans' accuracy limited the efficiency of Bucky Hodges, Isaiah Ford, and Cam Phillips on intermediate routes. Tech's passing game became very reliant on Hodges and Ford's ability to win 50/50 balls, while Phillips alone produced the yards after catch on short throws — a staple of Fuente's offenses at Memphis.
