Lies, Damn Lies, and the Offseason

The offseason is a time when we buy tickets on the hype train. But before we do, let's look at a few 2023 roster additions and ground ourselves in reality.

[Mark Umansky]

Both the best and worst part of the offseason is the lies we tell ourselves.

Of course, we may not actually be lying in the moment. And we may fully and heartfully believe them as we breathlessly tell an uninterested bartender about the hope you feel about a college football team when there's still a new year's snow on the ground.

But they often do turn out to be lies. Or mistruths. Little comforts we recite to wash away the grime of a three-win season. But at the end of the day, we could at least comfortably call them things we tell ourselves to make sure the glass starts half full.

There's no better time to talk ourselves into a redshirt freshman who no one's actually seen play yet (hellooooo Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw!) or a transfer who will certainly shake their bad habits when they don the orange and maroon (sigh...hey Grant).

But I'm here to help you not get your feelings hurt this offseason. It's not even February yet, and we're already getting ourselves excited about things that aren't even remotely guaranteed to happen.

That's why I'm here. To look at this hype and help sort fact from fiction. To help temper expectations coming off a three-win season.

I'm here...

...to tame the offseason discourse. The hero nobody needs and absolutely zero fans asked for.

The Quarterback

What we're telling ourselves:

No one was thrilled with the Grant Wells experience in 2022.The Old Dominion game was maybe the worst way for a turnover prone player to begin his Power Five career. Wells not only kept throwing picks, but also seemed to not trust his eyes for the rest of the year, which contributed heavily to him leading one of the worst offensive attacks in college football.

Naturally, most of the fanbase wanted to move on the moment the season ended, and hoped Pry and the staff would be able to find someone...anyone in the transfer portal.
