Marcus Davis Says Attitude and Leadership isn't the Same

These quotes from Davis are going to open a can of worms (via Mark Giannotto).

"Of course, we don't have the same players, but at the same time, we don't have the same attitude as we used to have," Davis said. "Even [former quarterback Tyrod Taylor] wasn't the most vocal person, but he'll let you know: 'Pick it up.'

"It's just like we don't have that or if somebody do try to do that, it's like egos get in the way or 'Why you coming at me like this?' Or 'why are you singling me out?' Instead of, 'Alright, I'm gonna pick it up.' It's not the same. I don't know what it is, but it has to change."

Many have theorized lack of leadership and accountability as reasons for struggles. It's obvious the character of this team is off, but no one can pinpoint why. This senior class doesn't have many contributing players, and that might have something to do with it too. Hopefully when it's their time, the juniors run a tight ship.

Well Jesus

He's gotta step up himself if no one else is...

Logan 3:16

Well the good Lord may show up and help out the Hokies on....oh wait, you were talking about Marcus.

It's a great day to be a Hokie!

This made me literally laugh out loud.

He's part of the problem

Laziest route runner, so many dropped passes. Definitely the biggest ego on the team. This team is just like when we had D.Hall, Ernest Wilford, Marcus Vick, and Kevin Jones. Huge egos, no one wants to be a leader, but they all want the glory. This team is too concerned with how quick they can get pictures of themselves up on Instagram or Facebook than actually playing a game. Sh*t, Dyrell posted a picture of himself saying "first catch of the night" against Miami i believe the morning after the game. How about he makes that TD catch and then very gentleman like, acts like he has been there. Logan not showing for the presser is a huge deal in my opinion. You are the leader of a D-1 football team, you suck it up and answer questions. There is your leadership problem right there.

Could Have....

When he arrived on campus he had the potential to be a first round pick. Had all the NFL physical traits. But he seemingly has squandered all the opportunuties to learn under Coles and Boykin and now maybe won't even get a tryout. From speaking to a staffer who is on the sidelines each game, there is no player taking on the leadership role and combined with the coaching staff not getting the team ready to play, it spells disaster and so, it is what it is, and we are seeing the results. I also believe we need Sabin/Miles type coaches to make 'em mean and hungry and we need senior leadership to bring it home. We have so lost the recruting battle lately and FSU/Clemson, etc are taking the ACC away from us and we are not making it hard to do so.

Th is does remind me of the '03 season. I wonder if someone will get Ernest Wilford'd on the head so they can tighten up.

Reminder, '03 never tightened up.

It just got worse and worse and worse.

Well, we lost to WVU (Wilford game) then beat Miami. Maybe that's the FSU game?

But next weeks BC game looks an awful lot like that Temple game we won 24-23 in OT when they missed a PAT. And .....gasp....uva beat us that year! (But, uva was pretty decent in '03, then beat WVU in the Charlotte Bowl and had Schaub at QB.)

God forbid our senior WR be the one to set the tone

Sorry Marcus, you're our best (healthy) WR this year, but I don't think anybody is going to be sad to see you leave Blacksburg.

come on now, dont be like that.

Thank you. Just four days ago it was wrong to hate our own players but now it seems this thread is encouraging it. I agree that he has been pretty bad this year and hasn't produced like anybody expected, but let's be honest, have any of our preseason "stars" performed as expected?

We're right to criticize him but to say he has the biggest ego on the team or we'll all be happy to see him leave Blacksburg is kind of harsh for someone that has helped our team succeed through the years. Remember the unc game in '10? Remember the 2 point conversion in the sugar bowl? Remember the uva game last year?

And maybe he does have a big ego but if you look at his words, he said that when people try to act as leaders, other players' egos get in the way. So who are we to say he has the biggest ego? We're not at practice, we're not in the locker room.

Believe me, I'm an advocate for criticism but let's be rational about it. Pretty much everybody has sucked this year, not just MD. But carry on fellas, I'm not telling you what not to do, just giving my opinion.

PS- I'm pretty sure his mom is a Key Player. I believe she has an account and has commented several times just how much she loves Hokie nation. I'd hate for her to read this stuff and think negatively of us.

For what it's worth a lot of players and their family and friends read the site. Specifically, I don't believe the poster you're talking about is Davis' mom, rather a close family friend (God mom maybe?) Either way, I've tweeted back and forth with her before and she seems like a nice lady and someone who loves Tech. Like anyone close to a player, it probably hurts when she reads negative comments. I don't think what BlameGlennon wrote was scathing criticism, rather his personal opinion, and I can't change that. However, he shouldn't speak for everyone.

When my I write about a player's or coach's performance above all else I try to tell the truth which is the most fair way to be critical--positive or negative.

I posted the quotes because there had been a lot of threads and comments here about leadership, and now someone on the team is finally questioning it and making it public. That's something to talk about, hence why it went into WaPo. Most of us don't know who the leaders, followers, or egomaniacs are because we aren't privileged to watch practice. Assuming Davis is one of them, isn't fair to him.

Davis has helped contribute to win games, but based on his measurable I thought he'd be a superstar by the time he left Blacksburg. I don't think he's played at that level. Personally, any receiver who consistently looks for a flag after a dropped ball and doesn't block downfield doesn't endear himself to me. I was an offensive linemen, we blocked hard then walked back to the huddle after. That's the type of play I relate to on the field. Do I still want him to succeed, go on to have an NFL career, and will I root for him? Absolutely.

The real question is why has someone so gifted struggled. He was an "athlete" coming into Tech and the program was supposed to turn him into a polished receiver.

I understand. I wasn't suggesting that you created the forum to hate on MD, at all. You said nothing negative about him. You posted his comments and spoke to the lack of leadership on the team.

He has been a disappointment this year and has been pretty bad at times, I'm not denying that at all. I actually agree with most of the negative comments that were said.

I wasn't trying to single out BlameGlennon either. I was just speaking more to the fact that I (and others) got called out a few days ago for being negative and "spewing hate" towards Michael Holmes, who has contributed nothing to our programs success, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. But then days later, there's a bunch of negative comments about someone who actually has contributed to our programs success (and failures as well, I know).

Like I said though, I'm not here to tell anybody what to say or think. I like reading all of the negative and positive insight everyone has to offer. Guess I was just defending myself.

If people are calling you out for being negative, that's a "you" issue, and it might have something to do with the overwhelming amount of your posts being negative (fire Beamer, etc...). You haven't been that over the top, and it's your opinion, but expect to criticized because it's extremely unpopular.

Also, there's tact, "ABSOLUTELY NOTHING". Holmes isn't the best tailback option, but if you're talking about being responsible, give him credit for running hard against Georgia Tech and in the second half against Cincinnati. He's a main reason why Tech came back in DC.

Sorry that I have a very hard time being positive when we suck, maybe that's just a me thing. And I stand by my Holmes statement - I never said he hasn't done anything right, I said he hasn't contributed to the success of our program. Running hard against gt and playing well in a loss isn't contributing to our programs success in my opinion. MD's two touchdowns in a unc win that kept us undefeated in acc play in 2010 (same year we won the ACC) and MD's monster game in a 38-0 blowout that locked up the coastal and has helped our recruiting efforts in VA #wyattTeller, is a contribution. Lastly, I don't think every comment I post should be judged by my previous negative comments, especially when I actually gave Beamer and co credit. Don't block me from the site Joe, I'll stop commenting though.

First it is impossible to post from my iPhone but this is my attempt. I think you are going a little overboard. I don't think that you are being policed in any way. I am pretty sure that joe said he didn't think that your comments were over the top. He's not going to block you. I am pretty sure he was just saying that if you make such comments you may receive replies that may call you out. Just keep posting however you like, but be prepared to defend yourself which you have done well so far. Go hokies!

It's a great day to be a Hokie!

All I'm saying is that...

Obviously this whole season has been a disappointment. Marcus Davis certainly isn't immune to that, but for him to open his mouth and (seemingly) complain about lack of leadership and poor attitude when HE is one of the main guys who should be providing said missing leadership is incredibly hypocritical. I don't buy the excuse that other guys get put off or defensive when someone tries to assume leadership. That just tells me nobody has really even attempted to assert leadership.

There's a reason guys like Danny Coale can be studs without a 6'5 240 lb frame, 4.3 speed and a 50" vertical. Marcus has all the measureables to be the best Hokie WR of all time, and obviously that hasn't been the case. I wish him well upon graduating, but I'm more looking forward to seeing what Knowles, Caleb, and Stanford can do when given this opportunity.

I will be rejoicing when he leaves the burg and i pray that it is after this dismal season.

First off, the fact that Davis was the one to make this quote is almost unbelievable in its lack of perspective or awareness.

Secondly, I think a major issue is complacency for the senior class sitting behind entrenched starters. Dyrell and Marcus specifically, though Dyrell dealt with some nasty injuries. When it was 3rd and MATTERS, Danny and Jarret and last year DJ were the go-to guys,

This makes me regret even

This season makes me regret even more every game of Tyrod Taylor's i didn't watch

"I never surprise myself"

Hell lets give Marcus some credit, maybe he's realized this is a problem, and also that he's a big contributor of it.

And as terrible as it is, its also going to be pretty hard to get a lot of the seniors very motivated for the rest of this year given the way this season has turned out, and with only 3 games left.

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson

This article makes me think, "Well no duh, now what can we do to get you guys back on track." We need that leader on the field, both off and def. we can get beat up and down the field all day everyday, but it sucks when you beat yourself the whole game. We've seen what this team can pull off when people step up and get that ship in the right wind. Hopefully, the right people step up in the right way to win, at least, the UVA game. They have plenty of talent, just gotta get everyone on the same page of the playbook.

Same 'ish different day

When is this "entitlement" mentality BS going to end. Everyone is expecting someone else to step up, someone else to be a leader. What ever happened to going out and just BEING that guy? Throw on your pads, suit up, and go knock some heads in. And for cryin out loud...lead by being a damn example, not with your mouth.

I miss the Danny Cole and Chris Shreve type of mentality that comes from a hard-nosed, just want to play, going to WORK for my position walk-on guy.

Keys were invented for 3rd downs.

Everyone complains about having star talent. then when they show as premadonnas like every other big boy program it's ludicrous to have at Tech. Yes, we used to have this mentality where we knew we were better than some silly rating and proved it on the field. Now, guys like Logan and Marcus who came out of HS highly touted are realizing potential doesnt automatically translate to success. The cart is already rolling downhill in a fiery blaze. Anything but an overhaul in coaching and putting young players who can contribute no matter seniority or PT will change this attitude. Grab your ankles folks, gonna be rough.

coaches and recruiting

This isnt specifically to you but more towards the premadonas. Oh i know the best players are usually premadonas, but we need those players if everyone wants to play in National Titles and be that next level program. And CFB has even said he doesnt like recruiting those egotistical players. But let me say this, do you think Alabama, LSU, Oregon, FSU, hell any top 10 team, have premadonas on their teams? HYFR (Hell yea f***ing right) they do! They probably think there shit smells like roses, they piss champagne, and think they are the prettiest thing walking the streets. The difference is Saban, Miles, Kelly...they dont put up with that shit. I just feel our coaches don't preach in the "hard-ass" mentality. I dont know, maybe im just talking out of my ass here and if you want to correct, go ahead.

When I heard about this last night on Tech Talk Live I couldn't believe it. He is absolutely delusional. Does he not see that his lazy Azz, and poor effort has led to a lot of our issues. He has no leadership abilities and honestly if he makes it into the league and can't perform with more heart and desire than he does in our crappy conference than he won't make the team at all. I would rather have a "Slow" (compared to Davis) receiver like Boykin who has tons of heart, leadership and consistency than Daavis ANYDAY!!!!

You may have all the gifts in the world but if you do things half assed all then it doesn't matter. Every game i get so pissed at him dropping passes or not catching the deep ball. I know that LT does overthrow him a bit but i bet if he truly gave his all we would have several more deep passes caught.

A new hope

I've only been to the GT game this season, and after that I felt that this was a special VT team with good things to follow. I convinced myself that pretty much any other VT team in the ACC era would've lost that game in OT. Then we beat an Austin Peay team in a manner that was ugly (the score should've more heavily favored us. Then Pitt happened, and the rest is history.

Sadly, VT hasn't played to their potential and there's plenty of blame to go around. The redshirted freshman starting next year need to come out hungry. The returning starters at every position need to step it up in 2013. The coaches need to make some difficult changes in their approach and roster.

Hokie until the day I die! Tech! Tech! V-P-I!

Very well said. I completely agree.

“I hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

MARCUS DAVIS is our worst offensive player. For those who don't like criticizing him, he's our least good offensive player.

His fumble, dropped pass down the sideline, and lack of effort on most other plays is truly disgusting to watch. His complaining about lack of pass interference flags and looking flabbergasted after he clearly fumbled is embarassing. It's bad when Jessie Palmer is observant enough to see and comment on this.

Some will point at his first 54-yard catch as being a big play. I will say that he bobbled that catch, and almost dropped that one too.

His ball security when he has the ball in his hands is so terrible.

His comments this week and his effort weekly are toxic to this team. He wants to talk about leadership and attitude, he should look no further than himself. Run hard on routes. Catch the damn ball. Tuck the ball into your chest instead of quacking it like a duck. Demonstrate attitude by making plays instead of whininig at the refs. Stop running your damn mouth about leadership and go be a leader.

I have been completely disgusted with Davis this year. I for one am not sad he is a senior in any way.

Many people, myself included, have given Beamer crap for the, "One block away" line, but it's the truth here. How many of these plays would have been big gains if Davis blocked his man?

Two minutes and one second of ATTITUDE AND LEADERSHIP

In some of those clips he looks like he's trying to make the tackle...I'd love to see this clip package against one from Coale or Boykin and see the difference...

How have the coaches not done anything about this by the 10th game of the season? Some of these could have been huge plays... Bench Davis and give Demitri the starting position.
