"Logan Thomas Decision Looms"

Not a bad article, pretty much sums up a lot. Calms my nerves (a little), I don't know much about David Teel, I'm sure some of you do.

Logan

With every QB that decides to stay in school Logan's draft stock rises...

What pick do you think McCarron's GF is going to be? I think Saban's daughter is giving her some stiff competition and his Mom seems to have all the tangibles you'd want in a top 5 pick.

#ALLMAROONEVERYTHING

Heh

Brent Musburger wants to give her some stiff competition.

If we had to conduct a poll

What percentage of the fan base would want Logan to actually come back? The vitriol has just been over the top as far as I'm concerned, but I wonder how many people would take Logan declaring as good news.

No pressure, no diamonds.

it would take away any probability of beating alabama

logan thomas can be a great qb. we all saw 2011. that actually happened. it can happen again and even get better with the right coaching. i'm confident of that.

he'll never be put up there with mv1 or tt because of this past year. but he can absolutely leave redeemed and universally loved by the hokienation like bryan randall if he can get back to the level that we've seen him play at in the past. then he can go to the nfl. and i'll cheer him on every time he sees the field.

the people who bang on logan to me are the worst type of fair weather fans. he had a bad year. he absolutely can have one for the ages next year. to me, him coming back might have more influence on our success next year than who's calling plays.

Couldn't Agree More

He has so much potential, just needs the coaching to match it.

Agreed. I can't stand people that bash Logan for one bad season. He looked so good in the spring. Something happened between spring and the season that screwed him up and it wasn't Whitfield.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

@VT_Warthog

He showed so much regression last year. I agree that the coaching was awful, but so many of those decisions he made left you scratching your head. I don't care about the stats because as a team our stats were bad last year, but the thing that was the most frustrating to watch was his decision making. Is it something we can fix? Sure, but it seemed like not having a running back to rely on like David Wilson screwed up his mind and made him think that he had to make more plays than he really did. I think he can be good in a play-action offense that really simplifies the reads (the best college example is what Bill O'Brien has done at Penn State, he made Matt McGloin look like a good quarterback), but in this spread offense that we tried to run I don't think his decision making is good enough to be productive.

Rip his freaking head off!

Maybe he just developed a need for....

Logan definitely was worse this year than he was last year. So what was different this year than last year?

We have no running backs. The defenses were gearing up for Logan and making sure that he wasn't the one to beat them. We had no running game to keep defenses from blitzing like crazy, or dropping everyone back in coverage. It also didn't help that our O-Line was/is awful.

Why do you think Tyrod was so awesome for us? Because he could get out of the bad situations his O-Line put him in and he had good backs and receivers to help him out too.

I wouldn't blame Logan for leaving, I mean if he truly feels that next year can only hurt his draft stock, then he should go. But I hope we get the right personell in to help him and make him stay. We need all the help we can get.

Just to clear it up

I definitely want Logan back next year. If he can return to anywhere near his 2011 form, we should be able to legitimately compete for the ACC title. The people that clamor for Logan to turn pro are the same people that think we could put my dog at OC and win 10 games. While OCainspring has been collectively horrible, this next hire is extremely important. We can't put any joker at OC and expect to compete in a major conference. We also need a big-time QB, and Logan has proven that he CAN be one. The next OC will go a long way to determining whether he WILL be one in 2013.

No pressure, no diamonds.

Well to be fair, your dog could probably pick random plays with no real plan as well as O'Cainspring can.

Rip his freaking head off!

Touche'

Can't argue with that.

No pressure, no diamonds.

I want Logan back no doubt and I think if he goes pro( and is told he is a first round pick) it just continues the unspoken conspiracy theory that someone, somewhere hates VT and doesn't want us to win!

as much promise as leal has you do not want his first start to be against alabama. i understand that people were frustrated with logan this year, but weve seen how good he can be. logan gives us the best chance to win. we need him bad next year. if he goes pro i wish him the best but i really really hope he stays

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

Unless the guy in your picture plays quarterback for us I don't know if it matters who we have next year against Bama.

He also split time...

at QB at his own high school during the last half of this year. Granted, it was with another D1 recruit, and Carliss was coming back from injury, but I have recently tempered my expectations of him and am hoping he proves me wrong. He's very, very athletic and can make plays, it's just his ability to consistently throw at the needed level that worries me. Sound familiar?

Virginia Tech 42, #11 Miami 24 - Da U, still not back

From what I have seen, his mechanics need a lot of work

Bucky doesn't get good extension either.

I wouldn't be shocked if he new OC brought in one of his own QB recruits this year. I dont love any of the QBs we have after LT.

Even Tyrod and Ru wouldn't be able to do much unless we have a good O-Line... Which remains to be seen.

Two epic goatees. Two epic coaches. Tip of the Spear and The Lunchpail. GRIMES&FOSTER.

Did you even watch our team when they were here?

They both did a bunch without us having a good O-Line. Granted, it wasn't quite as terrible as it was this year, but they were able to make plays. Tyrod was always a huge threat to run, and his speed would make the D-lines stay home in containment more, whereas defenses don't have to worry quite as much about Logan's speed. That is the main difference between the two.

Did you watch our team when they were here? Yeah, they made some AMAZING plays and I don't take anything away from them. But I also remember Boise State eating our O-Line's lunch for the majority of that game in 2010, Tyrod getting sacked multiple times, being constantly on the run for his life, and Ru averaging well under his normal production. There were several other games like that too.

Two epic goatees. Two epic coaches. Tip of the Spear and The Lunchpail. GRIMES&FOSTER.

There were a few games like that, but not many.

Our O-Line then was terrible, but against most defenses we were still moderately successful, partially because the opposing defenses had to game plan around Tyrod's feet a bit more than Logan's. And then there's the fact that Logan Thomas doesn't seem to be able to throw an accurate pass consistently, meaning more defenses feel a bit safer stacking the box now since we rarely complete anything over the top. Our O-Line now isn't really all that much worse that it was in 2007-2010, it's just that they are able to be more exploited because of our current personnel.

Tyrod Taylor spent a good amount of time running for his life, but that was something he was good at. Most of the time he could get out of the pocket and buy himself enough time to throw a decent pass, or take off down the sideline for 20 yards. Logan, when he gets under pressure, he either throws up a poorly advised pass, runs up the gut for 5-10 yards if there's an opening, or gets sacked if there isn't.

+1

Okay, yeah. I agree with you there. Historically, I don't think we've done too well with pocket passers. While Logan isn't necessarily a "pure" pocket passer, he can definitely NOT be described as a "scrambler."

Two epic goatees. Two epic coaches. Tip of the Spear and The Lunchpail. GRIMES&FOSTER.

That's mostly accurate.

The last successful pure pocket passer we had was Jim Druckenmiller. Quick rundown since then:

Al Clark was a scrambler.

Nick Sorenson was a pocket passer, but not necessarily very successful, as was Dave Meyer, and neither started a whole lot.

MV7.

Grant Noel. Most notable for almost taking the 2001 Miami Hurricanes to OT. If only Wilford had caught that ball...

Randall, scrambler.

MV5, scrambler.

Sean Glennon. Right.

Tyrod Taylor.

Logan Thomas.

RE: Wilford's drop

That play earned him the nickname at my house (for which he later atoned) Ernest "Iron Hands" Wilford.

That was my first ever VT game that I went to. I was in the East Stands and I can still remember the crowd going wild because from our angle we couldn't see that he dropped it.

I just got goosebumps remembering that moment.

In somewhat related news...

Clemson's Hopkins is leaving for the league. They're not on the schedule next year until (possibly) Charlotte, so it doesn't concern us too much. But it is Clemson and it is ACC related. Kinda wish he woulda took Boyd and Watkins with him.

Its all gonna depend on the coaching changes

If we can hire somebody that has a history of getting quarterbacks ready for the NFL he will probably stay, but if not he's gone. He's not ready for the league now, but he would learn a lot more from an NFL QB coach than from our incompetent offensive staff. Either way, I will support him. Say what you want to say about him, but he gave it his all every game this past season

#TouchdownTech

Anyone who says that they wouldn't care if Logan left for the NFL should step back and take a look at what that would leave us. It would leave us with a quarterback who has not started ONE game his entire career at Tech starting against the Alabama Crimson Tide, reigning national champions. Logan, on the other hand, has played in many big games (big conference games) and one BCS bowl game (it was a fucking catch) that we should have won. With a good QB coach this off-season, Logan could give the Alabama defense fits. He can only get better.

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.

Yeah okay

Unless throwing the ball at the ground somehow pisses off the Alabama defense, I don't think Logan will give them fits.

Something obviously happened over the offseason that screwed him up. If the coaches don't fix it, that's their fault, and we all know how bad of a coach O'cain is.

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.

The thing that I've always hated about our use of him is that we act like he's Cam Newton and run all of these QB runs. He isn't a great runner, he just doesn't have any moves other than run the guy over. What he does have is a huge arm with no accuracy, that's what they should be working on in the offseason, not these read-option plays.

Rip his freaking head off!

Bye Logan

All indication is that he is a goner.

He has his degree. Weak QB draft class this year since most of the QB's decided to stay in school resulting in a stronger class next year. Learn a new offense and play Bama to open the season for zero dollars... learn a new offense with NFL coaches for lots of dollars? Stay in Blacksburg and risk injury because you are still being used as the focal point of our run game and never get drafted? Or, let a team pick you up in the second round with hopes you are a serviceable QB or at worst a second string TE.

We don't have Clemson or FSU on the schedule next year so it's not like there is a "revenge game" he can look forward to against his buddies E.J. or Tajh. He won his last game (ugly). No proven studs to throw to or hand the ball off to returning. And let's face it, he had one great season and one turd season, but he will be drafted this year because he is 6'6 with a strong arm. Every bubble and struggling NFL team is looking for the next Colin Kaepernick or Russell Wilson to save the day. The 2011 edition of LT3 fits that mold.

Between the rumors I have heard and pure common sense I don't see him staying.

I kind of hope he stays because he has experience playing in big games and frankly, I trust him more than 190 pound freshman or Leal with the football. Hopefully he loves Blacksburg, Old Hickory Burgers, the Coaches (new and old) and all the insane fans that have been refreshing their computers every three minutes this past week enough to come back.

I don't disagree with your points, but there are no tangible indications that he is a goner. Quite the contrary; there are no true indications either way (his Twitter has gone dark) and most "sources" & media believe he is sticking around. No one really knows.

Yes, he has plenty of reasons to leave, but also plenty of reasons to stay.

@PhillyHokie007

I honestly believe that his decision will have a lot to do with the conversations he has had with Scot Loeffler. If he feels there is a decent chance for him to be one of the elite QB's in next year's draft, then it would definitely be worth holding out for the pay of a higher draft pick, and looking at Loeffler's pedigree as a QB coach I would say that is a possibility.

It also depends on the results of his draft packet. For all we know, they could have projected him for the 4th or 5th round (or worse). I highly doubt that he would be picked up in the second round, I would expect his ceiling is somewhere in the 3rd.

I also don't understand why the strength of the QB class in the draft really has that much to do with anything. Obviously these teams are doing their homework too, so if there aren't any good QB's remaining they will fill one of their other holes and wait until next year.

I get your points and don't disagree

but... just to show how crazy NFL front offices can be... Christian Ponder (with numerous throwing elbow injuries and a half decent college career) was drafted early in the first round. Granted he has worked out to be a serviceable QB for the vikes I never would have thought he would have been a first round pick. Thomas could definitely go in the second round. Glennon and Barkely will likely go before him but if he has a strong combine and a team falls in love with his size and arm strength he could easily go much earlier than what his paperwork states.

Yes and no. Naturally one of a prospective draftpick's goals is to be drafted as high as possible (especially to justify leaving early). But for a young quarterback coming off an unsuccessful year, he could land in an untenable situation that could do more harm than good. If he goes to a terrible team that needs/wants him to start early or right away and the flaws in his game aren't corrected in time, it could devastate him mentally and put him in a hole he cannot climb out of. It's easy to say, "Oh well he'll get NFL-reps with NFL coaches," but there are so many variables at play that it is never a given path to success. The dude needs work just to get back to his 2011 form against ACC competition; that would be a heck of a leap - though possible - to get him to a place where he can succeed against NFL competition.

If it truly is his perceived potential and God-given physical attributes, than they will more than likely still be around a year from now; a year in which he can attempt to correct his mechanics and improve his QB skills, to go along with being 6'-6"/260. That's just my two-cents.

@PhillyHokie007

Don't forget Bob Whitfield

If Whitfield (?) tells LT that Loeffler will help him, he'll stay. If he doesn't, he'll go.

You mean George Whitfield, they guy who "ruined" Logan Thomas' throwing motion in 3 days, so bad that our staff couldn't fix it in NINE MONTHS?

I hope he didn't believe a word of that claim...

Yeah, I knew I had his name wrong.

but it was clear from tweets that LT holds Whitfield in high regard.

I wouldn't be surprised if he plays a large part in deciding whether or not LT goes pro. Hell, Whitfield may have been consulted on the OC/QB coach search...

The buck stops with the offensive coaches on that one. Everyone knows this.

50/50

Knowing this guys attitude though I feel like he will want to come back and TRY end his career on a high note. I think his papers came back saying he would be a late 2nd to 3rd pick so he wanted to know what Beamer planned for OC this year. Looking at who Beamer has gone after I think he made the right choice for OC in Loeffler. Not only will he be able to help LT3 prepare more for the NFL but his philosophy fits the type of talent we bring into Blacksburg. Still though I have the feeling Logan is going. Even with what I mentioned above about him wanting to come back the notion that he will be brought into a team and paid millions to learn at the next level is to much to pass up now that he has his degree. Hope I am wrong.

VTMidge-Andrew Shields

It's George Whitfield and I agree .. I have to think that Logan trusts him and has some influence .. With the new rules concerning rookies with the last NFL CBA, there is a lot less risk on teams taking a "chance" on someone like Logan with his possible upside in the 1st round. Max of 4 year contracts, less salary, less guaranteed money. There is a lot more incentive for them to take HIM early (like I said, less risk). That being said, they're businessmen and not stupid. Based on most pundits, there are probably 5 (or so) QBs that will be taken before Logan in the draft. That's definitely not 1st round material and possibly not 2nd round material. I have no clue as to whether he'll stay or not.

Here are two data points for LT.

Ceiling projections:
2014 Draft -- 8th pick overall, Ryan Tannehill comp. $7.6M guaranteed, $400K base salary.

2013 Draft -- 2nd round pick, Brock Osweiler comp. $1.0M guaranteed, $400K base salary.

So, if you think you can improve from a current status of 2nd round pick to top 10, you come back.

Moderate projections:
2014 Draft -- 2nd round pick, Osweiler, see above.

2013 Draft -- 4th round pick, Kirk Cousins comp. $500K guaranteed, $400K base salary.

This is where it gets tricky, that $900K you could get this year for being a 4th round pick is money you will never get back. Basically, you get schooled in the NFL for a $900K signing bonus, approximately equal to what a 2nd round pick gets if you wait a year.

Injury Factor

Another thing I think about is the injury risk. He has survived two seasons of being hammered without injury. He will be the focal point of our offense again next year and a simple QB dive that results in an early season ending injury and he will be aimlessly applying for jobs everyday like the of his graduating class.

NFL Draft Bible and SB Nation

are reporting (and I use that word carefully) that Logan will declare for the draft. I really don't trust either site, but its speculative news and it should be passed along.

I think he stays. I know several people that WANT him to declare for the draft, just so he gets out of our hair. But I think we're much better off if he comes back. Leal, Hodges, whoever we're gonna put back there if LT leaves is going to be thrown to the fire. Granted, Tyrod was in a similar situation against Bama in '09. It was the first time he had the whole game to himself at quarterback. Who knows? Maybe if he leaves, one of those guys steps up and becomes the next Tyrod Taylor.
