The interwebs so far just have people saying they saw him leaving getting helped out of McComas, not putting any weight on his right leg. No way to tell who actually saw him though. Not to sound accusing, but what proof do you have he tore his ACL?

RIP Stick It In

Student

Just as a student who was in the gym at the time. It looked and seemed as an ACL tear. Of course I'm hoping it's not, but at the time that was what it seemed like to me.

fair enough

If it's serious, we should hear something tomorrow I guess. Hopefully it's just a sprain or something, I don't want him missing any practice time if possible. He improved so much as a cornerback last year, I want him to really be able to refine his game in the offseason.

RIP Stick It In

Especially after what he said in the presser. This whole time he's been talking about the work he's been putting in and how he is ready for #Bama. Such a sad thing to happen. Of course, I hope it's nothing serious and he will be ready to go. It just looked really bad in McComas today

Maybe you shouldn't say

"Exum tore his ACL" if you don't know that's true.

Maybe say something like "Hey I was playing basketball and it looked like Exum hurt his knee". You know. Something factually accurate.

Stories

People are going to put up here what they see or hear. Just because it isn't confirmed on the tech website or whatever "news" source you trust, doesn't mean it isn't accurate. Yes it could have been worded differently but at least he was trying to update everyone on what he and his friends saw.

I'm glad we agree it should have been worded differently

considering that was my entire point.

I hope it's not that serious. Like you said, he's been putting in so much work that it would really be a shame if he didn't get to play in that game. Hopefully he gets better, everyone will be rooting for him.

Rip his freaking head off!

say it ain't so

any updates?

My bad guys

I was pretty drunk when I posted that. Should have said it could possibly be a torn ACL. Somebody said an ankle, but I was with my friend who has torn his in the past and he said that was what or seemed like. He's no doctor by any means though. Sorry to make that such a blunt and unconfirmed post. But I still haven't really heard anything else since.

Thanks for letting us know.

Still waiting for confirmation.

Need that guy to play his nuts off this year. No injuries!

The only things i've seen on twitter is...

@BobbyShoe83: Rumor swirling that Antone Exum was hurt last night playing pickup basketball. Was being helped out of gym putting no weight on 1 leg #Hokies

@metthejet: Just saw Antone Exum getting helped out of Mccomas putting no weight on his right ankle #vtfootball #beatbama #notgood

Frank should ban pickup basketball games during the offseason. Its just a great way to hurt yourself. If they hurt themselves in practice or during weightlifting that's one thing. But during a meaningless basketball game on campus its just dumb. Especially if you're an important part of the team like Exum is.

Agreed. NCAA athletes should only participate in supervised athletic events while on-campus.

Hope Exum is alright.

Lets put them in a room with no corners and padding too haha. This is still college remember. Life happens.

More like shit happens. :(

Very unfortunate thing to happen a great Hokie.

very unfortunate

that this happened. Youre right about it being college. All the players ball at Mccomas. Even the break before the bowl game they were balling at the gym. LT, Davis, Fuller, Knowles, Exum, Scales, Holmes. Sometimes we forget that theyre in college and do other things besides football. Very unfortunate.

The thing about basketball, though, is the very nature of the playing surface. My sports medicine buddy always believed football and soccer players accustomed to running on turf were more likely to hurt themselves on a hard court (and vice versa). That's why I say the coaches and trainers need to preach caution to their players.

True

You think this is the point where coaches/Beamer preach caution harder than before? Or do they ban other sports altogether (not sure they could even do that)?

If they were allowed to do that and did ban other sports all together a lot of recruits wouldn't even consider coming here. It's just a part of being a college kid, hopefully he can work hard and get himself back out there at some point next year.

Rip his freaking head off!

Pick up games in McComas

Got dunked on a few years ago by Marcus Davis. It was awesome.

Sorry, but this is just a perfect moment for a Mean Girls reference.

Rip his freaking head off!

saw this on twitter

kendall fuller (@KENyoufeelmee) tweeted at 0:24 PM on Sun, Jan 27, 2013: I want it, but hopefully not like that i want to earn it and work for it

Don't know if this pertains to Tone or not. Maybe just a coincidence. Hopefully.

silence

from everyone so far. ruh-roh.

Yea

The fact that he hasn't tweeted about it worries me, because he's pretty active with his twitter.

Kendall Fuller - future Thorpe winner
(STOP CRYING ABOUT DOWNVOTES)

very decent chance

Very decent chance that there will be two true freshmen starting at cornerback going into the Bama game if Kyle moves to nickle

I think this sums up how I feel right now....

It was a catch

Ok im starting to get scared, i hope Kendall is as good as they say he is.

VT football just tweeted he tore his R ACL and lateral meniscus. 6-9 months

It was a catch

Damn. Hopefully the recovery is closer to 6-months but we're going to need someone else to step up.

Beat uva. That is all.

Even worst case (9 months), he still gets to play his senior year. It'd put him back sometime in October (so maybe for ACC play?). So there's still that. I guess it could be worse...

It was a catch

Get well soon, Antone

Ok this day officially fucking sucks for me sports wise! I am a DIE HARD CELTICS fan 1st Rondo goes down with the knee now Exum... AAAAAAHHHHHHH! WHATS NEXT!

Same here

Rough day. Certainly puts a damper on beating the Heat

On the Contrary

I loved how they were competitive and pulled out the W with great defensive effort.... Time for JET to step up along with Lee and Barbosa.

We're all rooting for you Antone. Great player who has the drive to succeed. I hope he comes back.

Rip his freaking head off!

Wish a good recovery

I had an ACL reconstructive surgery back in 2007, its not fun, hopefully Exum will bounce back like Adrian Peterson did.

This also reminds me of the time I saw Darren Evans slowly walking across the street on crutches, I felt so bad.

Finally, Basketball is a great game for getting in good shape, and I'm glad players are spending their time playing basketball rather than other things, but after this and USC's Robert Woods having ankle surgery from a Basketball injury, I think if I was a coach I'd tell players to stay away.

Exum is my Hero

I like everything about this kid. He has awesome character, and is just a classy, trash talking, joker that makes the game that much more fun. And what he did in Orlando, and an out spoken faith in God. He is just so likable. I really hope to see him on the field next year. Rooting for you Antone, I know that you will put in the extra effort to get back on the field, and when you do, you will gain your rightful place and show these incoming freshmen whats up.

Rivals began doing their comparisons..

Rivals began doing their comparisons of the top ten prospects to their mirror image NFL stars. Kendall was compared to Morris Claiborne. With Exum out until who knows when, I hope Kendall shows off some of these "Claiborne-esque" skills come August.

Before his injury, Exum would work out at 3 a.m. just getting ready for Bama. I'm sure many of you saw his two tweets yesterday where he said "I'm going to come back stronger than ever." Also, it's been said that the recovery will take 6-9 months. Well ever since the national championship, Antone has been absolutely hype about playing Bama. You know that if there is the possibility he can be back in July, or possibly sooner, Tone's gonna make it happen. Missing out on spring practices will definitely hurt, but I'm sure he will be ready to play when August comes. Yes, this injury is a setback, but I can guarantee you this: ANTONE EXUM WILL PLAY AGAINST ALABAMA ON AUGUST 31ST AND HE WILL BE 100%. Mark my words.

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.

I would love for that to happen to, but it takes a full year to completely recover from a torn ACL. Even when you come back from it after 6-9 months it's very hard to be back to your previous form in less than a full year. I know that everyone is going to think of Adrian Peterson, but that guy is a once in a generation type of player who has a body that just naturally comes back from things quicker (kinda like Terrell Owens). It's not a knock on Tone because he might be the hardest worker on the team. I definitely hope he comes back, but don't expect it because even if you expect him to be full strength by the middle of the year you might be disappointed.

Rip his freaking head off!

You're right. Tone is the hardest working player on the team. And even if he isn't 100% by Bama, you know he will be giving everything he has. You have made a good point, though.

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.

I hope he isn't playing if he isn't fully healed. Last thing he needs is to re-aggravate it and blow his chances of playing at all this season. Plus he has an NFL future to look forward to. He needs to be smart, and not come back till he's ready.

It was a catch

He'll be fully healed just in time for the National Championship!!! #BEATBAMA2dot0

Ill gladly take him at 90% ability because I know he'll give 110% effort. (As long as it doesn't jeopardize his knee)

Complete or Partial

Anyone know whether it was complete or partial? I know that it takes a full year to get anywhere near 100% with a complete tear.

It doesn't take a full year to recover from an ACL

I completely tore my ACL and was back to playing sports 6 months later. Like most of you, I was worried that if I went too hard, I'd reaggrivate the injury and retear the ligament. The guy in charge of my rehab told me that after the 4 month mark, the replaced ligament is just as strong as the original. It's a matter of restrengthening the knee, and getting comfortable with it (being able to trust your own knee)

People that say it takes up to a year to recover are simply incorrect. It may take a year for the knee to feel the exact same as it was prior to surgery, however at about the 6 month mark, you can do just about anything without reinjuring the knee. The hardest part of the process is getting comfortable again. If Antone is able to make it back in time for pre-season practice, he will get comfortable with it really quickly.

Thanks

Having never personally torn my ACL, it's nice to get some insight from someone who has.

It was a catch

A lot of it depends on your health before the injury. As stated, it doesn't take the full term for it to heal. What takes the most time is getting the strength back to where it was before since you lose so much muscle. Having the confidence to make cuts can be a struggle too. Every person is different though. Some go through a year of rehab and then make one cut after that year and tear it again while others are back out there in 6 months. There's no silver bullet to this one, but I hope that Tone can get back out there soon.

Plus, just as we saw with Brady, there are a lot of complications that can come with ACL surgery. Even if you go to James Andrews (most Orthopedic Surgeons have no clue how he became so famous) there is a possibility of some complications. I said above that it takes a full year to get back to where you were before. That includes rebuilding the muscle and having the confidence in your knee to make the cuts you were making before.

Rip his freaking head off!

I also tore my ACL, MCL and meniscus

I couldnt agree more it takes longer to get your confidence back in the knee than it does to get the strength back in the knee. It took a full year before I had complete confidence in my own knee but was back playing sports in 8 months.

Win one for the Beamer...

Appreciate the feedback

My sister tore her ACL and it was about a year later when she could use her knee with complete confidence as if nothing happened. So I agree with your statement. I am incouraged about what you said around the 4 month mark. I am sure Exum will have the want to to overcome this situation faster.

There are two kids at my school who tore their ACLs almost within the same timeframe. Both of their problems after 6 months weren't the strength in their knee. It was the confidence they had in it. Tone will probably be fine after 6 months and he should have all of August's scrimmages to get his confidence up.

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.
