So if we get Pritchard today, who else are we still looking at? Houston and Ellies?

I'm hoping for Ellies and Gary, though I haven't heard anything on the Gary front in quite some time.

Gotta get Gary on campus. Then we'll see

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

7/21!

If we get Houston, we need another RB as well. He's a complementary piece. A good one.

Is Houston still a realistic option? That guy seems like he's trending to Michigan or some other new fling.

What's up with Zonovan Knight? Looks like he's taking tours of all the other Carolina schools since deciding Duke wasn't a fit for him. Any word on his Hokie interest?

JP

I don't believe there is much to speak of. I think the hope is that if NCSU lands him that we have a better shot at flipping Griffin.

Can I get a rundown on remaining targets?

If I had to guess I would say we have 3 slots remaining
Pritchard
Gary/Griffin/Another RB
Ellies or another DT

We need a good running back!

Proud Hokie since 2004.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Class is almost full, let's get Pritchard today, then finish up with Gary and Ellies. If Mike S flips get Battle or Davis. Hopefully there will be a little more attrition than expected and we have a spot late to pick up a late bloomer. On to c/o 2020!

No offense to Pritchard, but this doesn't seem like the smartest move for us to accept his commitment (if he picks us). From a numbers standpoint, we need another DL (Ellies, please), at least one RB (I'd be pleased with Houston or Gary), and we can't leave ourselves without a move to make late...

I know there are some that think we need another OL. And Pritchard would project on the interior, which we haven't addressed this cycle. But I'm okay with us standing pat re the OL for now if it frees up a spot for someone bigger and better later (at any position of need).

Again, I mean no disrespect to Pritchard; I actually like his tape a lot. Aggressive, good blocker, good feet, and plays with a little chip to him. (If he's 290, I'm the Queen of Sheba.) There's just nothing that would indicate that he's a priority recruit for us and hasn't been on any shopping lists I've seen thrown around for the remainder of the class. IMO this would be a head-scratcher if he was a take at this point in the cycle. Just my $0.02.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

And Pritchard would project on the interior, which we haven't addressed this cycle.

Aren't both Hudson and Hanson projected as interior lineman?

Also fans have complained about OL recruiting for as long as I can remember, saying we should be taking 3-5 per class no matter what. here we are in good position to land 3 OL targets and now it's time to queue up the complaints that we're taking too many lineman.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Weren't Harris and Darrisaw interior guys from last cycle? And I think Brown from the previous?

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Harris and Brown are interior guys but Darrisaw and Hudson are projected at RT.

I think we'll have some attrition. There are a couple r-So and r-Jr guys that probably won't crack the two deep this year. Haven't seen Pritchard's tape, but after 2012-2015 I want as many big uglies as we can get within reason.

If the posted info is accurate, Gary has an OV scheduled for Sep 8 at SC.

So what other OL do we take? No guarantees there will be anyone else or that we can flip him later. If the coaches take his commitment it means they value their eval over this 3* status. Either they think they can make him a better player or they see things other people aren't seeing. We still have room Ellies and I dont know if we end up with a RB this cycle just based on where we are at with that. so that gives you your one spot for a late bloomer.

Disagree with you here. I'm of the opinion that we need to take 8-9 OL across every two cycles. I also don't feel comfortable going into 2019 with one scholarship center (where I think Pritchard projects) on the roster in Hoyt.

FWIW I also really really like Pritchard at center (assuming he can snap). The best prospect we've taken at that spot in as long as I can remember. His potential drops off significantly if we look at him as a guard prospect though.

Is the expectation that Hoyt will start at Center this year? Or Chung?

From what I have seen/heard it should be chung.

I like Pritchard and if we don't take him there is no guarantee he won't go to someone else . I would stand pat on RB unless we can get a sure thing we have 6 on scholarship . The coaches know a lot more than you guys and have seen most of the incoming guys and can adjust what they think we need where . I would take a DT but only if we think he is better than the two we have already or as good . I don't know the numbers but assuming we are near the limit I would hold 1 or 2 for late comers .

Pritchard is a Hokie.

I like Pritchards film, always chugging those feet!

No one has mentioned Zonovan Knight since he decommited from Duke. I thought his film was outstanding, I hope we can get him on campus.

Sean

I'll be extremely surprised if he doesn't commit to NC State

I have seen us be the first to offer a bunch of guys recently. The coaches are really working on building long relationships with these players.

Before we get too cocky on this, remember they beat us (barely) on the trail last year both in total points and average. Also, even though our class is nearly wrapped up, it's still early in the cycle, especially for schools that aren't tight as we are on schollies...

Agreed. However the most important thing is not how 247 ranks our class. It's if the coaches got the players that they wanted. Looks like for the most part they did.

I personally couldn't give a crap what rivals says. If Fu is happy. It is good enough for me.

Happy Fu happy U.

Also agreed (assuming his evals are on point, which we really don't know yet), my point was we're really not in a position to be mocking UNC's recruiting especially since we compete for recruits. Those kids and their parents come in and read this stuff and it's not a good look to be "pointing and laughing" at a class with kids ranked a bit lower than some of ours. Could easily be the other way around and who knows which kids pan out and which ones do not.

One of their top recruits decided to play pro baseball so you take him out they drop to 30th national and their average player rating goes from 87.66 to 87.19 and we are now ahead of them in both

Not counting their 10 lowest ranked committs, their recruit ranking average is 0.8787 which is close to ours.

Took me awhile but now I get it bc they only have 11 commits

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

I don't know what you're talking about. They have a recruit named "Storm Duck". That seems like a pretty strong class to me.

EDIT: meant to reply to the above post bashing UNC's recruiting efforts.

Great they can trot him out in their next rainy game and proceed to throw the ball 40 times

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

They were probably after someone named "Duck Storm" after their previous performance in the rain, but turns out they got Storm Duck instead. Either way, rumors are saying that current players had a big part in getting him to commit, and regardless of whether or not it was the right guy, they all got A's for it.

Slightly off-topic but still recruiting news. loluva recruiting has been very confusing. They got a few good commitments this month yet they are still losing out in situations like this:

Maybe Bronco told him he wasn't sure if he could develop into an ACC caliber player.... or that he could look forward to playing the worst teams possible if he came to UVA....

It's a miracle anyone will come coach for him, much less play. How do you recruit with that clown undercutting you at every turn.

Kinda related: I saw UVA's QB coach and his family at LAX this past Tuesday. I was standing right beside of him wearing my Tech hat in a line for shuttles to the rental car places. I wanted to talk to him but with his little kids and wife with him I figured he had enough on his kids he didn't need my dumbass talking (pestering) him.

3. UVA, really? Football players that other P5 schools want don't really want to play football there. C'mon man.

Also VT fans, re Devyn Ford:

As I understood it, it wasn't that they took another RB, it was that they didn't say anything to him about it beforehand.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

I can't imagine Franklin wasn't aware of the possibility of him transferring to PSU before/during Devin's recruitment. Based on transfer rules the kid should have to sit out a year which puts him squarely in Devin's path for playing time. The situation seems to mirror OSUs recruitment of Devin and if true would buttress Franklin's status as a snake oil salesmen.

Don't worry if we all keep tweeting at Ford about how he'll never play at PSU we will be back on his good side in no time!

4* Small Forward out of Texas, looks like he'll be deciding tomorrow. 100% crystal balls are with Texas Tech right now, but we did get the last official visit from him. Would be a great start to the class of 2019.

#Sauces say he never showed up for his scheduled VT OV last weekend.....so i wouldn't get my hopes up.

Any word on Jamious Griffin (RB) that is currently committed to NCST? Hearing he's seriously considering us now. Insight to what kind of a prospect for us too would be great.

I like Jamious Griffin a lot! Watching his film reminds me of Ryan Williams.

Considering he's Jaylen Griffin's brother, I'd think we may have a good chance to flip him.

One thing I'm certain.. kid can pound the rock up the gut

If Griffin is back on campus at the end of the month for VTs big tecruiting weekend, then there's a great chance of flipping him

Saucy.

Who is our next major target for hat has an upcoming announcement date? What major prospects are still on the board and when are their respective decision dates?

I feel great about our 2019 Class at this point. If we can hold on to what we've got (I'm expecting one of the WR/ATH to flip; Sainristil looks most likely, possibly Bowick) and add 2-3 more game changers this fall. My questions is what 2020 prospects will be at the BBQ in a few weeks. Any chance we get a 2020 commit before the end of summer? If so, who are the most likely?

lol all of this is literally behind the 247 paywall at this very second. In summary, not too much to get excited about to finish summer

Lol well that's unfortunate; also I saw per his own twitter account, Zonovan Knight is announcing his decision July 9th at 4pm. Looks like NCSU so maybe we have a shot then at Griffin?

I have asked the question if the two are somehow linked, meaning if Knight commits, does that move Griffin to us, but no one knew. I like Griffin the most out of our RB options in 2019. Plays in some tough competition and is already Hilgart ready

Anybody heard anything this weekend? It's been a quiet weekend for recruiting news...

Pour some Beer on it

I think it was mentioned elsewhere that the rest of the summer will be pretty quiet.

We're in a dead period. No visits, no face-to-face contact between coaches and prospects.

ahhh, so this is the time of year where I examine every game on our schedule and convince myself we could be 12-0 if everything goes right...

Pour some Beer on it

if everything goes right...

that was short lived, eh?

After the Mook news (and Adonis) are we at 85 schollies? Would we/are we looking at any grad transfers? Is it too late for grad transfers this year?

I would imagine we would use those schollies toward the 2019 recruiting class, with maybe a walk-on or two getting a scholarship for this year as a reward.

Mook would have been a senior this year, so his scholarship allotment wouldn't have impacted next year's incoming players, right?

Bacon strips &
bacon strips &
bacon strips &
bacon strips

Mook was a senior so it won't affect scholarship numbers for any of the upcoming classes.

I believe so. The only way his scholarship gets used is if we get a transfer or give it to a walk on.

Probably too late in the game for a transfer. Probably will go to Willis.

Yeah, but he can afford to pay his own way.

Beer bottle to my head, I'd say it goes to Willis too

Bud/Wiles 2020

Willis is a Junior, so it would tie up the schollie for 2 years

Scholarships are year to year in this case.
Much like last year, Nick Fullard was given a scholarship on the basketball team. His was given due to an opening for that particular year.

Thanks GM for reminding me to be clearer

I was not as high on Knight as it seems like a lot of people were...

I really like Gary and Griffin and hope we land one of them and then focus on Tyree and/or Baldwin next cycle.

At this point I would be willing to cut all of our RBs next year if it meant we got Tyree.

If anybody actually thinks we'll get Tyree I have a great timeshare to sell you

Even if we got him, he'd just get hurt in the first practice of the year (as is apparently effing tradition) and then we wouldn't have any RBs all season.

Both he and Griffen being behind Ricky Person (a legit bad ass). I am not buying it. I assume Griffen is much more malleable to flipping at this point.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Thinking recruits care about the depth chart is the same thing we see nail us with OSU, Penn State, FSU, and Clemson. Every one of these players thinks they have that special something to earn the starting spot even over other generational talents... until year 2 or 3 they don't play and transfer to a G5.

Recruit Prosim

Can't compare recruiting against OSU, Penn State, FSU, and Clemson to recruiting against NC State. Depth Chart should definitely be a sales pitch against NC State. Kids can see the difference between waiting for their time at a national powerhouse versus waiting for their time at a school that's lucky not to be in the bottom tier of the ACC. A lot easier watching from the sideline, knowing you'll be the lead back for a championship contender in a year or two.

Bud/Wiles 2020

Out of the potential RBs you listed, I'm least upset about Knight going to NCSt. Still upset, just least upset. Grab any of the other 3 and I'm perfectly happy.

But...but...I thought this is home?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

This is the real home, homie! All those other homes are just imitating, kinda like the matrix for homes, and think of Blacksburg/Lane as "the one."

Hope this is a good sign...

My money is on (an)OSU. But I would love to get him and would gladly lose my imaginary money that I use to bet with.

Don't think he's a take unless they miss on bigger targets

And now he has gone from no CBs to 2 CBs for (an)OSU...

I hate being right.

Apparently they really like him and he's a take for them (whereas Jowon Bridges supposedly was not) so that would be my guess.

Tweeting, retweeted, speaking with all anOSU fans and players, highly doubt we get this one, but we have been surprised.

It's good to watch the other hudl videos on this player's page as it reveals some other nuances to his game. I am no expert here but he has a decent o-line to run behind. He keeps moving his legs and fighting for every yard. He isn't shifty but has a nice stutter step and keeps moving. As far as speed, he isn't the fastest. Personally, I don't think he fits our scheme offensively. I didn't check out his MLB highlights.

His hudl profile lists him at 5'9", 180lbs, 4.66s 40yd, and 405 squat.

EDIT: I took a look at some Tahj Gary hudl vids to compare...all i can say is I hope Tahj picks us.

Let's Go

HOKIES

I'm no expert but he sounds kinda small...I'm also 5'9", 180 and I would explode if I got tackled by any college football player. Granted I'm sure he is more muscle than I am, but still

Morgan is 5'9" but doesn't mean that he isn't servicable to some other team. It's not uncommon to see RBs under 6'0".

We've had similar height (and shorter) RBs before. Best example, our very own Deshawn McClease is 5'9" and was 173lbs in high school. Take a look at this old McClease hudl video against another team (not a collection of highlights) and there's a huge difference in skillset vs Morgan.

McClease hudl vid

That's why when looking at hudl videos, I like to see the single game highlights. A couple things I noticed is Morgan is Jacoby Pickney's teammate and can deadlift 600lbs (very very impressive).

Let's Go

HOKIES

Thanks for the comparissons for frame of reference. I wasn't concerned about the height, just the weight listed with it.

If we take another receiver it better be Hazel. Sheffield is too similar to Robinson.

Yeah I think Hazel would be the only take left at WR and that might only work if another spot opens up.

If Ellies(sp?) is gone, don't we have another spot? Looking at the roster yesterday...i think we need to swing for the fences on another DB..

This is weird. I see wide receiver and think 'hmm I feel like were good at that position'

When did this happen?

The old VT was TE to OL or TE to QB. Maybe the next step is WR to DB and WR to RB

BOOM...

Is this a first for TKP?

Out of curiosity about the swimming and diving program, I've always wondered if in recruiting, performance and student life aspect how much does having the pool in Christiansburg rather than on campus make an impact? Being a student athlete is long and exhausting days, that's without the added component of having to travel a decent amount and the logistics of it everyday for these athletes.

Ex. for early morning workouts/practices or evening ones after your classes. I think I'd look at program differently as a recruit if I would have to essentially commute to football practices and perhaps to even a small degree make me wonder about their seriousness in the sport. Obviously having a quality coach can make up for alot, but does it affect perception at all and does not having it on campus about say something about our facilities compared to swimming at other universities.

I'd love VT to be elite at olympic sports.

Fugazy

Excellent point, but do they still use the War Memorial pool at all? Maybe they use it for practice? I honestly have no idea.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used."
- The BoD

I have friend from Greensboro whose daughter is a scholarship swimmer on the team. She had multiple ACC offers plus several others. Both love the VT experience, and she shut down her recruitment as soon as she visited. I can ask him next time I see him, but it certainly had no impact on her, whatever the case.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Please do. I could certainly see how it would suck to have to go all the way to C-burg for practice, but if they use War Memorial for practice and the C-burg facility for meets I would imagine it would be much less of an impact.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used."
- The BoD

They do some practices on campus, but most of them are in Christiansburg. Friend's daughter just returned to VT this week for training - more of that is at VT compared to the actual practices, so he was happy to talk about it. He really likes the new coach, and is excited to see Sergio pulling in some top international swimmers to rebuild the team. He was glad to see the former coach leave - felt some of his "motivational" stuff had not caught up to today's acceptable standards. Nothing illegal, just unpopular, and not necessarily with the girls well being a higher priority than winning - whatever that means. It was starting to have a negative impact on the team before Whit stepped in and made what he calls a great hire.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Thanks for that. I've heard great things about Sergio in the past as well. Love getting international Olympic sport athletes. I hope that one day as part of the athletic facility inprovements, they build and expand the Olympic sport facilities near the other fields. Particularly with Olympic facilities it can always be used for other sports especially if you have a quality S&C coach who knows how to integrate those skills with sport specific ones. It may be just something that I'd like, but I'd love Blacksburg/VT to become an unofficial Olympic sport training center that athletes just know about. In a similar and perhaps mid-Atlantic version of what Eugene/UofO has become that out in the west coast. With Sergio and the quality the wrestling program has become, I feel like the foundation is there if Whit chooses to. Blacksburg with its somewhat isolated location and surrounding nature actually works out really well for it.

Fugazy

A couple of my friends were being recruited by VT, pretty sure they only swim at Christiansburg for practice. Don't quote me on that though.

Well, that makes even less sense.

Grrrrr.....just get some RBs already.

Out of curiosity what would cause us to bail on him during the off-season? During the season I can see it since maybe a players tape doesn't look as good in their senior season, but seems odd for the off season and considering our glaring need.

Silent commit from someone else?
Did he do or say something that turned us off?

Just wild that he pretty much called that! It makes me think why did the kid even commit in the first place if it was known out there that he wasn't for real? So confused

The kids young and it's a big decision so I'll never be critical about the difficulty and range of emotions kids through in this process. But man, something like this doesn't change in 6 weeks. He may have felt pressured to pick a school before the start of his senior season and/or perhaps some interactions with Clemson and PSU pushed him to choose VT when it wasn't in his heart. Who knows.

Good luck to him, hope he ends up where he's supposed to be.

I guess we have another scholarship to give to a DT now. I actually felt Kelly was going to end up playing safety and was a best player available take (which is a good thing when talking about a blue-chip in my opinion) rather than a real position of need in the near future.

He's the one who didn't have VT in his top 8 before he committed, right?

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. I hate vodka and recruiting.

We should always be excited for new commits. But the reactions over decommits and kids who commit elsewhere is just crazy. They are kids, 17-19 yr olds trying to make a big decision. Maybe he decides to come back. Maybe not. Let him be.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

I think a message board is a fine place to vent frustrations from losing a commit. I haven't seen any comments on here that are a personal attack on the kid. I also went through his twitter and all the comments were, kind/positive. There was 1 guy who commented something along the lines "Cam never really committed, he used us when he got big timed by Psu and Clemson"

We were already his back up back up choice after the big dogs did want him. No surprise from me.

Does it seem like this smaller class size is putting extra pressure on the coaches to make sure they don't have any misses?

Such an appropriate response.

The top 10 recruits in VA for 2019 are pretty depressing now. VT only has the 9th. I think at one point we had like 3 of them committed?

VT has 3 of the top 15 (per 247), but PSU has 3 of the top 7 including the top 2....

Is PSU the new FSU? Why can't VT be the new FSU?

True. Still considering that awful considering I believe only the top 9 are consensus 4 star recruits.

Anybody want to compile a list of who will be at the BBQ this weekend?

I vividly remember all the "recruiting experts" on this site during the 2018 recruiting class telling everyone that 2019 was our year and that the coaches weren't focusing 2018 as much as 2019. We are going into year 3 of the new coaching staff and we can't seem to get traction with top recruits in our own state. Hell, even London got that honeymoon period of getting VA recruits to stay in-state and buy in at UVA. It really just sucks that Penn St has come out of nowhere and is snatching up these Virginia recruits. I'd be lying if I wasn't afraid of Maryland in the next couple of years with Steinspring and Beatty recruiting the 757. I'm not trying to be a Debbie downer but we need to start winning off the field before we'll be able to compete with the big dogs on the field.

Pour some Beer on it

Geography matters less and less every year.

Get guys who fit your system. We've done that.

I'm not going to let Cam'Ron Kelly change my perception of this class.

There are guys that fit our system at every caliber of skill and physicality. We just seem to be missing on the best ones. Sure we are still getting guys that will 'fit our system" but we need those first choices to come to VT to compete.

You're right, I was one of those that thought 2019 would be the year we saw a big jump in recruiting. At that point, my optimism was 90% due the confidence in VT snagging Devyn Ford early. a big difference between London and Fuente is that they are not relying only on big in state recruits to fill out their classes. London had the star power at the top, but the rest of his classes were garbage because he filled them out with fringe D1 players from the state of VA. Fuente gets some of his guys from VA (Devon, Tay, Rivers), but he isn't afraid to go across the country to get his guys either: NC (Dax), IL (QP), CO (Dalton Keene). Fuente has shown the ability to go to other states to get the guys he wants.

While I agree it's good Fuente is doing that, to some extent that's just how the recruiting game is played these days. Honestly, Beamer and co. didn't do a great job keeping up with the times towards the end. Fuente's approach is modern but it isn't novel.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that Fuente "isn't afraid to go across the country" with the examples you've given. NC is basically a stone-throw away, and Dalton was a family friend of one of the Coaches (Wiles?). I'd give you QP but he seems to be more the anomaly than the norm.

Of course Stinespring goes to Maryland. Good for him but good thing they aren't in the ACC anymore. He was a good recruiter and knows the tidewater area well. I met him once when he came to recruit at a local high school in va beach.

VT Football: It'll get after ya!

Proud Hokie since 2004.

I had a good time at school in Blacksburg and really liked the college town feel, but the Burg is a far cry from a small city like State College, which compares more to Athens, Ann Arbor, Tuscaloosa, and larger college towns. Even Charlottesville has more of a city vibe. I think Penn St has had a lot more investment in their town for a lot longer than Tech. Blacksburg is unique, I like it, but it's out of the way and I understand kids preferring to go to bigger towns or cities.

I'll caveat this with the fact that I've never been to State College, but I did have several roommates from Penn State who described it as extremely similar to Blacksburg. Also I looked up the populations and State College has 42k while Blacksburg has 45k. State College appears to be 2.5 hours from Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from Philadelphia, so not exactly close to a major city either. The other places you grouped as small cities have populations of 100-120k.

I could be missing something obvious but I'm curious why you feel State College is more of a small city while Blacksburg is only a college town.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

All I can say is it seemed noticeably bigger than Blacksburg, bigger buildings on campus and in the city. They are similar, I agree. Multiply downtown Blacksburg by five to ten times and that's what I think State College was like, maybe even more. And when 100,000+ people come to town for a game, there have to be enough places to stay and restaurants/bars to cater to them - that's about 60% more than the 65,000 at Tech games. They've been filling that stadium for 40 years or so, Tech has had 65k for almost twenty years.

I think that 42k population is the student population, and with graduate students that goes up to about 47k. Looking at their wiki it says there's over 100k living in the area, and that more than doubles to 235k for the region (two counties). There are a few pictures in google images that I think show what I'm talking about.

Also, I'd say that a big similarity is that they're both out of the way, you pass a lot of farmland getting to both towns. I don't know if Happy Valley has a river like the New River, and I don't know how close their mountains are. Blacksburg has a lot of great hiking and mountains, lakes, rivers, close by, and I don't know what PSU offers in that respect. If you can sell that to recruits, that's where Blacksburg might have an advantage. (Looks like PSU has some parks close by, too)

Was the 42k of State college with or without students? People like to throw around the 45k number for Blacksburg but that's including 26000 students.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

My dad was in the AF and worked as an ROTC instructor at PSU for a few years (he said it was his best assignment). He loved State College. I lived there when I was 2-4 years old so I don't remember anything about it.

My dad said that Blacksburg and State College have very similar feels. State College may be a little bit bigger, but they are very similar.

PSU is a blue blood. They went through a stretch of being average and the Sandusky thing was a terrible thing, but they have the financial backing and the facilities to do very well. It also seems like their coach is a salesman and can get the recruits. PSU is suddenly a sexy pick.

I think we'll get there, but we need to be attractive on the field. Unfortunately, I think we may see a drop in the win total this year with all of the youth on the team, but 2019 and 2020 could be really good years. Fuente just needs to keep getting guys that fit his system and then hopefully the big players will start coming when they see a dynamic offense on the field paired with Bud's defense.

State college feels bigger and more small city than bburg. Their history of success is also a huge sell, regardless of how you feel about them that blue and white uniform is one of most recognizable in cfb. Also, I think one of the major things that make them easy is their facilities and stadium. They sellout and fill that stadium to the brink every game every season. We have a serious problem of not even being able to sell out ours with nowhere near 100k fans. It's speaks volumes to see ours still significantly empty in certain parts even for big games and while you can maybe argue loudness/overall intimidation factor. Happy Valley visually is a more imposing stadium stadium because of its size and knowing that their are 100k ppl with you there. They aren't Alabama but do have national championships and the stadium and facilities that match OSU, Michigan and any SEC school. All these things combined are what make an easier sell to recruits and to some recruits some of these things really matter and make their decision much easier than you'd think if you pick the individual pieces of PSU apart.

Fugazy

I think the instantly recognizable uniform aspect is a real thing. Not going to start a debate on the new unis, but we've been bouncing around not great unis for a while now while the blue bloods stick to their tried-and-true with minor alterations here and there. I know many 'croots love flashy unis, but for a school that often struggles to sustain brand recognition, I don't think our uni game is helping much, just my two cents.

We have a serious problem of not even being able to sell out ours with nowhere near 100k fans.

Didn't we recently have the longest sell out streak in the entire country? I know every seat wasn't filled every game and the donors bought extra tickets to keep it going, but still VT continues to do better than at least 90% of NCAA steams at filling the stadium. Add in that fan attendance is down in essentially every sport and I'd consider even our current attendance a positive rather than a serious problem.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I should've been more specific, what meant was not the technical sell out where it's announced. I meant the actual sell out where seats are crammed and no visible sections empty. I've noticed that during some games on any network and no matter if it's enter sandman or during the game, certain parts of the stadium aren't even panned over to since they are empty/half full. We all know what I mean, idc if they announce a sell out on the loudspeaker, if I look up and there are gaping holes in the stadium it's not a sell out. If we want to compete with the big dogs/blue bloods, doing better than 90% of cfb isn't good enough, it's that 10% that we're hoping to compete with.

Fugazy

Leg... attendance just doesn't have the same feel to it, I don't care what the numbers say. Last season for a couple games I remember I thinking how pathetic it would look if they actually had expanded seating to 80k when they were weighing doing that some years back. For a school that played in its conference championship game the season prior, you just don't get the vibe that there's excitement building around VT football.

Numbers and the look of the stadium will be different as long as every student packs into the NEZ. I will concede that numbers in general and enthusiasm aren't where they need to be, but 9/10 times the places that look empty are the student seats in the the top of the SEZ and east stands because they move down with their friends.

No argument from me on this, and it's certainly worth pointing it out. And there's not really a good answer for it, bc you don't want to police it to the point that students don't have as much fun and thus stop going, but this isn't the only aspect of the gameday atmosphere that has noticeably declined over the last few years.

I agree the visitor and student sections are usually the ones that don't fill out but that still means that's something to improve upon. Again our blue blood counterparts don't typcially have this issue even with significantly higher capacities. I think we're in a time inVT football as a brand and event where we can be creative at how we do things and looking at seating included. Maybe moving the visitors section to other places and allow our fans to fill out the current location where the visitor seats are. Not saying we should or shouldn't, but other stadiums give better and worse locations than we do so there shouldn't be any apprehension to playing with the Top of the south end for away fans for example. Idk if it's always been this way, but when i was there 08-13, you'd look up at north end zone and it would be one of the first places to noticeably clear out when games were somewhat out of hand and/or against lower level competition at half time. I hated it so much, because students or supposed to be the most hardcore fans. But I also view that as students its not having the same level of commitment as now as an adult when I go, I paid money (tickets, hotel, transport, etc), spent time traveling and am gonna stay til the end no matter what. I'm always of the mindset that if a situation isn't where you'd like, then that's an opportunity for improvement and creativity. Pointing out excuses/small subset of things that are going well or saying this is how things have been done isn't the best way to make meaningful improvements in what you're looking to do. Especially if whatever the model you're aspiring to be doesn't have the same issue.

Fugazy

Many of the students will leave those NEZ seats and move to other places after halftime too. My daughter used to move and come sit with the family if there was seats available close to us.

Again our blue blood counterparts don't typcially have this issue even with significantly higher capacities

Tennessee, LSU and Florida have all seen attendance drops. As has Texas A&M, UCLA, FSU, ND, Oklahoma.

Also I found out that PSU among others is lowering the total capacity of their stadium with a proposed update.so attendance isn't a Tech only issue.

As for moving the visitors section Tech did that under the last reseating. Now it's just upper level seats in East.

“Stats are for losers.” -Mel Kiper Jr.

I hear ya. I think Lane gets loud for the big games, but it takes a big game for people to get pumped up. I was in school from 99-03 and visited a lot in the years following before I got married. People used to scream their faces off when we were on defense. I remember times my head hurt and thinking I was going to throw up from shouting so loud. I think that the current students (as a whole) hang their hats on that tradition but don't show the same intensity. Now it seems to be about getting your instagram post on the video board or holding a sign to spell out "this is home" in the stands. Has it become gimmicky at VT? Maybe a lot of stadiums are like this now, but the form of entertainment should be the product on the field and not social media and whatever else is going on on the video board.

In terms of attendance. For me, I'm married with two young kids. It is a lot more of an effort to go these days. I don't have as much time and money is going elsewhere. I'm going to the Miami game in the fall, but I'll be watching the rest on TV. The on the field product will certainly help increase attendance. Entertaining football and wins always helps.

Everyone repeat after me....Winning cures all......Winning cures all...

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

So that's why we were absolutely killing it on the trail from 2004-2010? Also why Franklin was able to pull strong classes at Vandy and why he's been able to pull elite classes after 7-5 seasons at PSU?

'Winning cures all' is a cop out. It helps, but there are staffs that recruit better than others. Everything doesn't just boil down to money and/or winning - there are other variables.

Fuente and his staff don't have a very strong track record when it comes to recruiting, and they're definitely learning on the job at the P5 level. Wiles and Bud were never great recruiters, and we're relying on them harder than we probably should be. Recognizing this is a weakness and trying to address them via staff hires (which is why the Lechtenberg and Nix hires worry me a bit), support staff, more innovative techniques through social media, alumni engagement, etc. are so important.

Generally speaking, the more you win, the better you recruit. The recruiting at VT has never been about snake-oil salesmen, it has been about building a winning tradition and a strong program.

The best recruiting at VT came after VT made it to the national title game. I think you could argue that VT's winning record has really helped in recruiting, while not winning high profile games hurt.

We're not going to agree. We won something like 88 games over an 8 year span, which (IIRC) was like top 3 or 4 in # of wins over that time. At best, our recruiting has been 20-25. We weren't even able to get an outlier class in the top 15 with all those wins.

Winning is a variable, but certainly not the only, maybe not even the top. Every thread about recruiting has someone say 'winning cures all' and that's just not the case.

If winning cured all then Boise State would have had a top 5 class every year in the late 2000's. Tennessee gets solid classes year in and year out and when's the last time they really competed on a national level? Its all about perception and the money coming into the program. Yes, winning helps, but its gonna take more than that to get where we wanna go.

Bud/Wiles 2020

Winning helps perception. I never said it "cured all". That's someone else's strawman.

If your argument depends on Boise State, I'm going to say that their results in every category (good or bad) are caused by having a blue field.

What's the perception of Tennessee? Not good, Bob.

Anyway, maybe either strategy could work, but VT didn't hire a salesman. VT hired a coach. Fuente's strategy is to build build a team that can win games, so get on board already.

Did Boise have top5 classes relative to other G5 schools?

We're not going to agree. We won something like 88 games over an 8 year span, which (IIRC) was like top 3 or 4 in # of wins over that time. At best, our recruiting has been 20-25. We weren't even able to get an outlier class in the top 15 with all those wins.

Winning is a variable, but certainly not the only, maybe not even the top. Every thread about recruiting has someone say 'winning cures all' and that's just not the case.

Did I say "winning cures all" or that it was the only factor? No. I said generally speaking, winning helps recruit.
I'm contrasting that with your "What works is having a good salesman."

Maybe they're both important, but the VT program has more relied on winning. You're also comparing VT with the top 15 who were also doing what? Winning. Sure, there are a few outliers, but what had they done in the past? Win. They had something to sell. You have to be able to make recruits believe in the future of your program, but a winning tradition helps with that. That winning tradition doesn't always have to be recent. It just has to support a narrative of future results.

Recruits also see the type of wins and the conference you're in. Quality does matter. 10-win seasons are great, but if the difference between programs is that one is losing to Michigan and Ohio State, and the other is winning one or two more games, but those wins are against UVa and Little Sisters of the East Carolina, the math might be a little skewed. You also have to win the top 10 OOC game, or the bowl game. If you consistently win 9 or 10 games, but lose the big ones, your narrative is not quite what you need.

Was VT producing top 10 or top 15 results? No. VT was producing top 25 results, and getting top 25 classes.

There are certainly outliers, but winning is something a good program can do in order to help with recruiting, and my contention is that it does help. I would also argue that it's not just that all-important average recruiting ranking, but "fit". Recruiting one superstar helps a lot with recruiting ranking, but I really like the recruiting classes VT has been getting lately, where almost every recruit is at least in the high three star range.

I feel like the recruiting classes that Fuente has been getting are excellent, and that we're going to see results on the field by next year. This year is a question mark, but it won't surprise me if there's a competitive team by the end of the season. While I'd like to see guys like Ford sign up, and missing him really did hurt, I'm still a believer in Fuente.

People used to scream their faces off when we were on defense.

Students still do this. I would ('13-'16) end up with splitting headaches nearly every game from a combination of noise and exhausting my vocal chords, and I certainly wasn't alone.

Now it seems to be about getting your instagram post on the video board or holding a sign to spell out "this is home" in the stands.

Please don't group all current students/millennials under this blanket statement. Getting a picture, sure, but if you're curating an instagram post while still at the game, someone around you would probably call you out for it. I think across CFB there are social media initiatives on video boards and other avenues because it brings an element of interactivity to the fan experience. In my time there, I felt that VT students are much less concerned with those campaigns, as they already feel involved in creating the environment, than your average fan.

Penn State's proximity to NY, NYC and NJ cannot be understated. When I visited with the fraternity back in 2008, the NYC accent was thick, clear, and almost every car we encountered in a nearby lot had NY plates. Parts of State College have an NYC feel to it. Visiting Niagara Falls a few weeks back, there were PSU logos, bumper stickers, flags all over. It adds to the aura of the school, brings the money, etc. And all within a 4 hr drive to Buffalo, Syracuse, and NYC.

We have Washington DC/NOVA, but compete with other schools, including PSU. PSU owns PA and NY.

Think about it, what other northern school do they compete with for student body? Syracuse and Rutgers? Maybe BC? I know growing up in MD, we could attend PSU with in state tuition. They are a big dog in their market with the college town to boot.

Lastly, I don't hate on PSU. Great school, and their spring game in 07 still brings a tear. My in laws are 20 mins from there. Losing recruits to them sucks, but it's hard to argue with them if they choose that route.

Yep. Draw a 200 mile radius around State College and see what major Metropolitan areas you catch. Probably Phila, Pitt, NYC, DC, Balt, Cleve, Buffalo. Blacksburg? Charlotte and DC.

I think DC is further than 200 miles away from Blacksburg.

269. giggity

Charlotte is 173 miles

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

For a school with a renowned engineering program, you'd think folks would know what "radius" means.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

State College
--> NYC 237 miles (4.5 hrs)
--> Cle 240 miles (4.5 hrs)
--> Baltimore 165 miles (3 hrs)
--> DC 208 miles (infinity hours with traffic)
--> Buffalo (like it matters bc no CFB player would go hang out there) 200 miles (4 hrs)

More importantly: We're not losing recruits to PSU because State College is 'only' 240 miles from Cleveland and only 200 miles from Buffalo.

The way I took the previous posts concerning these areas is not that recruits will go to PSU because they want to hang out at these locations on the weekend, but that PSU has large alumni bases in these areas due to geographic proximity. I have no idea if that's really true or not, but I can see the point. If you live in NYC and an Ivy or equivalent isn't in the cards, there aren't a ton of good options in the Northeast. PSU is one of the few. They also have an enrollment that's 3 times VT's, so I could see them being able to have strong alumni representation in that many metro areas.

THIS, I see more PSU gear around DC than I do VT.

Growing up in the 757 and living in Michigan there is a similar amount of visible fan support. Michigan has a little more support from casual fans like woo girls but they also have to split support with MSU which is a problem we don't really face.

Of the out of state fans how many are from Michigan? Kids grow up in Ohio, Michigan rooting for the top teams. Just like in Alabama, Louisiana and Georgia. Not so in VA.

There might be some truth to that. I didn't grow up a Tech fan and I think part of that has to do with how inaccessible the school feels being between 5 and 6 hours from the 757. Not being a fan, I wouldn't have been able to show you on a map of Virginia where Blacksburg is. But I could show you Ann Arbor, Columbus, Atlanta, Tallahassee, Miami, etc. A lot of kids in high school take trips to JMU, UVA and some of the other closer party schools. Yeah I have no idea how we ended up talking about Penn State's proximity to Buffalo. It seems reasonable that their proximity to major metro areas allows them to draw more fans to games but in my opinion the most significant factor is that Penn State had a 20 year head start when they hired Joe Paterno and focused significant resources on the football team.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

My point is both programs recruit fans and players regionally, but while the regions somewhat overlap, Penn State's region is a lot more populated.

FWIW, they appear to have 3 players from Western NY., which is 2 more than VT has from, say, South Carolina.

PSU is similar in size to the Burg. Game day atmosphere is no comparison. I was at the PSU vs Nebraska game and I can tell you without O&M glasses that VT vs Nebraska was 10x better from start to finish - tailgating to end of game.

Side note: Lane doesn't have the capacity that Happy Valley has but the crowd noise is crazy different. Speaks to the way both stadiums are engineered for fan experience.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Can't say I disagree with any that but I'm not sure what it has to do with my post.

You took the words right out of my mouth....

That could play a factor but I'd point to Rutgers as a counter point. Rutgers is in an even more populated region than Penn State but they didn't seriously invest in their football program and continued to be lower tier college football program. They only started taking the program seriously after having some success under Schiano but it's clear that they are vastly behind the rest of the Big 10.

By that same token, Penn State started seriously investing in their football program in the mid-60s. Virginia Tech didn't make a similar commitment until Beamer arrived in the late 80s. That's a 20+ year head start where Penn State had 2 national titles and 4 undefeated seasons.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

It's almost a matter of time when someone looks over our schedule and says something like this....

"If we are able to pull the upset against FSU, we probably win the next 3 games to go to 4-0.... If we are able to beat Notre Dame then WATCH OUT!!!!"

Yet, when asked what we are "watching out" for with 10 games to go, there answer(s) are few and far.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Sustaining momentum for the program has been a difficulty so far in my eyes, even with a single season when you factor in some WTF losses. 2018 was always going to be a developmental year, but last year had the potential to be special and instead was underwhelming. I just think of how much different things may have been if Evans, Ford, and Bucky could be convinced to hang around one more year. With them returning on offense and our defense last year, we are at least in the Orange Bowl, IMO.

Our highest moment in the Fuente era to me has still been our performance in the ACCCG against Clemson. We got a lot of praise coming out of that game as a major program on the rise. Instead of being able to ride that wave through 2017, we had a major rebuild on offense last year and now will face a similar problem on D with questions still lingering on O.

I know a lot is discussed about W/L records and how it really affects recruiting, but I can't help but think overall perception is shaped by it. I now see it as a real possibility that our W/L could go backwards over the first three years with similar results in recruiting rankings.

I hate to be "that guy", but this all really goes back to the end of the Beamer Era. There were no QBs on the roster when Fuente got here. There was some talent at WR, but no depth. There wasn't a game changing RB on the roster. To say the OL was abysmal might be putting it mildly.

The short of it is that things went downhill in a major way, especially from a talent and recruiting standpoint towards the end of what was a great era. The cupboards might not have been bare on the surface, but there was nothing upon which to build after graduations and early exits to the NFL.

Combine that with the negative things that have happened this offseason, and things seem much bleaker than they actually are in my opinion.

Is it football season yet?

Beamer was always about winning with VA talent. If you look at the state of North Carolina in the mid 2000s, the amount the high end talent heading South every year is remarkable. That was our hay day and while hindsight is always 20/20, it's disappointing to think we didn't make a real effort to draw that talent to Blacksburg.

We like to give the guy a hard time, but can you imagine where the program would be if Loeffler had not come along when he did? While the offense may not have taken off, at least he kept the talent level on life support at QB and WR.

Good point... I'm certainly not trying to give Beamer a hard time, just pointing out what actually happened. Heck, we wouldn't even be having this discussion if Beamer hadn't done such a great job!

Is it football season yet?

So is Sainristl gonna flip or something?

From what I picked up we have stopped recruiting Houston. Makes me think there's another RB that the coaches expect a commit from

Yes I think Houston wanted to commit and we declined. Think that ship has sailed.

I really hope it's a good back, Houston would've been a great complimentary back to any sort of big power back we pick up. I assume they said no before the Cam'Ron Kelly decommitment opened a slot. My old coach is a flint hill and they have great things to say and they've coached some quality players before.

WHAT DID I MISS?

1. PSU is a recruits dream because of its proximity to Buffalo

There are some good Hokies in Buffalo now so maybe that's the reason.

And there wasn't last season?

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

It didn't seem like Buffalo wanted the Hokies they had last year. I'm personally torn, I want them to do nothing this year, not a win. But there are a bunch of Hokies that I want to succeed so it's really hard for me. I'm not a fan of the organization for how they handled Tyrod last year. I used to be a fan of them because of Bruce.

I hope Tyrod takes the Browns to the playoffs this year, that would make two teams he has helped make the playoffs in 2 years. That would make the NFL fans take notice that he is a starting QB in the league.

I live here in Germany and the USO brought out Rex Ryan along with a bunch of football players for a tour group. Took my kid out to meet them and chatted with Rex about Tyrod. He loves him some Tyrod, just gushed about him being an even better person than football player and greatly underrated. I'm a fan of Rex Ryan now.

There are some good was a great Hokies in Buffalo, now then the screwed him over on the field, replaced him with a QB that tied the record for most INTs ever in a half and then sent him to Cleveland, so maybe that's the reason they can get bent.

FTFY

(also, good luck 3rd&Logan!)

They also have Tremaine, Teller, and Thomas. Its ridiculous how personally everyone here took the Tyrod situation.

Oh and they also had the greatest Hokie of all time.

I have never been there, so clearly they didn't have the greatest Hokie.

In case you did not notice, I hold myself in high regard.

just making a joke my man. I barely watch NFL

We took the Tyrod situation personally because it was absurd and wreeked of "old guard" and "old fashioned" views of football and the QB position, the NFL old guard's position on black quarterbacks remains, and we know this because we hear the same narratives about the white QB's and the black QB's every single draft. Tyrod was the first QB to have a winning record there since the 90's and took them to the playoffs and management was actively trying to get rid of him.

Yep...this is the only reason I'm watching the NFL this season...For Tyrod, Cam..and I'm starting to warm up to Lamar Jackson as well..

Don't forget Deshaun Watson. When healthy (big caveat), he is going to dominate.

You're right about that..but i dont want anything to go positive for Bob McNair..lol

I took it pretty personally as well, though my theory is it didn't have to do with race so much as the Bills were just too obsessed with the idea that a starting NFL quarterback has to come from good "draft stock".

Perfect example was the fact that it took them forever to accept TT as the starter over EJ Manuel. EJ wasn't even a particularly great college quarterback, but they still took him in the first round and it took him having a turnover fest in London for the Bills to accept that TT miiiiiight be the better option.

Big Tyrod Fan here...hoping he takes the browns to the Super Bowl..then goes to the Hall Of Fame as Joe Thomas predicted... :)

I took the Browns to the super bowl earlier today.

So now Houston tried to commit and we turned him down? I am trying to compile a list of recruits that we turned down:
Jordon Houston
Tank Land
Riley Simonds
Kyle Bilodeau
Anthony Harris
Ben Smiley
Hakeem Beamon

Please let me know if I am missing anyone.

Side Note: a class of those 7 players would be ahead of Louisville and Syracuse current class

Looks like we're pickin and choosing, are we a blue blood/big dawg now?

Fugazy

Anthony Harris

The RB last year that we tried to get but went to UT?

The basketball player

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

We turned him down? I thought he gave coaches an indication he was going to commit and then didn't and picked UT instead. The story about VT turning down a commitment from Anthony Harris was when the basketball wing shot around with the team and then Buzz turned him down.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Then there was Anthony Grant? Ended up committing to FSU when it was thought it was us and UT. Last year?

All stories are similar.

Yeah I'm all confused now and I definitely pulled in elements from Anthony Harris (football) and Anthony Grant and made it one story

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Actually you mixed in even more stories than that. Anthony Higgs is a Class of 2018 basketball recruit who reportedly tried to commit but ended up at Illinois. Anthony Harris is a Class of 2019 basketball recruit who is the #1 ranked player in VA and remains one of VT's top targets.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

live look at me trying to figure out what's going on with all the different Tony recruits in the last six months:

Did Beaver ever try and commit?

He committed to the Mountain Ears.

I cannot even anymore, he was supposed to be the consolation prize right?

- Mike Burnup

I never saw any indication that we were likely to be his choice.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I will say that I can see why playing for offense like Dana Holgerson's would be appealing to WR. They're pass happy, score a lot and often and that's probably a big sell. Plus the big 12 plays defense about half the time on a good day. If you're a good WR you probably love being told you'll be able to roast most of the DBs in your league.

Fugazy

WR is a position that I am not worried about. I have a feeling that Pinckney took the last WR spot. We already have Payoute, Robinson, and Bowick at WR. Add Tre Turner, Mitchell, Simmons, Ellis and we are looking pretty good at the position.

Pretty sure Payoute will be either a safety or corner and Bowick could possibly flip to Notre Dame. Also with thin depth at CB I wouldn't be surprised if Ellis possibly ended up there, but I hope not because I think he is a huge threat with the ball in his hands.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

I think Notre Dame pulled Bowick's offer

Fugazy

Consolation prize for what?

No more WRs.

Let's oversign RBs and DTs for a change.

Yeah I don't get the consolation prize comment either, but Fuente has made it clear that he likes having a lot of wide receivers on his team... I feel like another 4* WR wouldn't hurt. It makes sense in this day of spread offenses, all of those receivers can get legitimate playing time.

Sounds like Griffin and Gary are attending the BBQ this weekend. That's great news in my book.

We have big recruiting event planned this weekend. If I have learned 1 thing about Fuente it's that we should expect a commitment tonight.

Looks like Jarren McAllister (3-star PG, 2018) asked for and was released from his LOI. Interesting mainly since he's been committed forever!

I assume after speaking with Buzz they made this decision together (similar to the Langley twins) or was told he'd be buried in the depth chart for years including having to redshirt.

Wish the kid well. Looks like we have a ton of scholarships to offer now including those from Robinson, Hill, Outlaw and Clarke graduating and the potential for NAW and/or Nolley to leave early.

Fugazy

McAllister wasn't a key player, but going into the season with only 10 scholarship players is not good practice.

Wish we hadn't run Pig off, seemed like we did that to sign a player for this season. Now we've got plenty of room.

Add all these coaches leaving and its only natural to wonder if Buzzketball is a sustainable model

Evan Watkins put in a CB for us for high 3 star running back Keshawn King out of Florida (Oakleaf HS). Pretty good offer list: Arkansas, Louisville, Miami, Nebraska, Ole Miss, USCe. FWIW were listed as "warmer".

Apparently he committed - just saw the breaking news on 247. Welcome aboard Keshawn!

This is awesome. Kid has great film against top competition in FL. Welcome home, Keshawn!

Watkins and Matej Sis just CB'd Brandon Dorlus to the good guys. Anybody got a good read on him? I thought Ellies was #1 DL target and know he is leaning OSU but we need some physically ready DT's to plug and play for 2019.

I think 247 says Ellies isn't a take at either school and Dorlus is higher on our coaches board.

Dorlus is a raw but athletic 6'4" and 270lbs DT. He only recently really got into football having mainly played basketball.

Wait. Can he rebound?

/s

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Eleven Warriors has indicated that Ellies is technically a take for OSU, but that he's #4 on their list so he's on the back-burner for them. So he might not be a take now, but he could be in a month. Probably why he hasn't committed anywhere yet.

Might end up at WVU or Rutgers at the end of the day.

So Mike Sainristil got a 6th crystal ball to Michigan. I find it strange that he's gotten so many and over such a long period of time, instead of just some quick swing.

Hope he makes it BBurg, as I love his tape and potential. Just curious as to why that is and has he somehow been interacting with Michigan and given a silent soft verbal but perhaps isn't an immediate take so he's staying committed.

I can't recall is having someone get so many crystal balls so slowly and/or this many without atleast decommitting.

Fugazy

Pardon me in advance if this comes across too strong, but:
247 and their crystal balls are bullshit!

No they aren't. There are a lot of very well connected insiders that submit CBs and are super accurate. If they were bullshit then most players pages would show a bunch of predictions for one school then it would say they were a hard commit to another school.

It's well established that insiders switch Crystal Balls when a decision leaks or there is a substantial change in a recruitment. Cam'Ron Kelly is a great example. He didn't have a single crystal ball to Virginia Tech until word got out that he was going to commit to VT. Somehow- must be telekinetic abilities- all the insiders suddenly switch their CBs to Virginia Tech and they get credit for being "super accurate."

Fast forward one month, Kelly decommits and insiders will do the whole stupid song and dance again without any of their past predictions counting against their accuracy. So yeah, any situation where a prediction can be changed up until the last moment is going to look super accurate. If I was allowed to change my bet up until the last play of every football game, I'm pretty sure I'd be right about the outcome far more often than not too.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Yes word got out about it. I'm not sure how else you expect them to know where a kid is going to go? The reason we pay attention to them is because they are insiders with access to this information. People aren't putting in CBs for guys they haven't heard anything about because it doesn't make any sense to. They respond to the continual flow of information and the ever changing minds of high schoolers and then essentially share that information via a prediction.

This has been discussed before. CB's are not a definite forecast of what will happen a year from now, it's a forecast of what is currently happening with that particular recruit. It's just like when LA or BAG tell us they feel good or not so good about a guy. That is what they are currently hearing and when they share that information with us. CBs are the exact same thing and my point is that they are usually pretty accurate in showing how a recruit is feeling.

it's a forecast of what is currently happening with that particular recruit

Except when it's not and the recruit goes to Florida State.

Seriously though my point is that the Crystal Ball system is corrupted because everyone jumps ship once the decision gets out to preserve their accuracy, regardless of whether they have a direct source or knowledge of the situation. It doesn't demonstrate insider knowledge or prediction accuracy when Crystal Balls are mostly changed once the outcome is essentially guaranteed. Literally everyone on a message board could make an initial prediction for where a recruit will eventually commit based on their offers, location, and connections and then switch the prediction when the actual decision leaks. Get a few of the early guesses right and preserve your overall accuracy and suddenly you must be an insider too!

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I'm not denying that people just follow Wiltfong and other guys. But there are plenty of guys that are true insiders and have knowledge that very few other people have. That's why we don't care about the people who jump on a guy once the first few people put in a CB, but we look at those first few people. Maybe you hear all the same info that they do, but I do not and when I see Watkins, Matej, Bud Elliot, Wiltfong or any of those guys put in a CB, I pay attention to it because they are usually right based off of their true insider knowledge.

None of those you named have put in a Crystal Ball for Sainristil to Michigan. So is he going to Michigan or not? That was the genesis of this conversation, after all.

Regardless this is a tedious argument and I don't want to continue having it. I defended someone saying Crystal Balls are garbage because if the commitment isn't imminent, Crystal Balls are essentially a crap shoot. Even after a player commits, he can decommit and the system just resets without penalty. The system is rigged to produce high accuracy on predictions. That said, Crystal Balls can be a useful tool and some degree of insider knowledge is generally responsible for them all being changed prior to an announcement.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Has anyone peaked over at UGA recruiting class? They are absolutely crushing it. 16 recruits made up of five 5 stars, ten 4 stars and one 3 star. Imagine landing this kind of talent in just 1 year of recruiting.

Pour some Beer on it

They are for for sure winning it all wirhin the next 3 years. Just bonkers. Makes me feel like why are we even trying lol.

Which is why I feel some kind of way about expanding it to at least the top 16. Would give us at least Cinderella shot. Anybody could lose on any given night. I know that would affect classes and more. Also I think it would more games that much more interesting.

Hokie Love!

They've been killing it since last year, it's ridiculous.

They've been killing it for a long time, just finally have a coach that can do something with it and have now upped their recruiting game even more. If you look at 247 composite rankings since 2001 they have had a top ten class every year (few sprinkles of top five and top three) save two years......where they were a lowly 11 and a lowly 12. Should make everyone feel better about the talent richt is pulling in at Miami. He was a perennial underachiever for years at Georgia.

They always had a good coach..didn't you hear? Da U is bak

They have taken it to another level though. This is unprecedented recruiting success for them.

Totally agree. I said they upped their game, but their recruiting before was nothing to sneeze at. In richts last 8 full recruiting classes (2008-2015) they had an avg top 8 class, .90495 avg recruit, 82 four stars, and 18 five stars......a couple of those classes they had over 30 enrollees which they filled out with fluff And brought the avg recruit ranking down (ala a long snapper like us last year) and a couple conversly were small classes where they had tons of talent but the low number brought their overall ranking down. Long story short they have been killing it......and in richts last year recruiting that you combine with smart.....they had 3 five stars and 10 four stars. The way they have improved off of that is amazing and a testament to Kirby smart.

Right but all those guys were just really good fits for the program
