That play by play has me pumped. I'm putting on my Ultimate Warrior armbands now. Gonna go body slam the wife, brb
We finally won a tiebreaker Fam! That was the most hype finish I have seen in a very long time!
Don't know what happened and how they scored it because the announcers were surprised and the refs didn't offer an explanation but the takedown with seconds to go was awesome.
2 points were scored from the takedown at 1.5 seconds. The ref then started the hand swipes... It takes 2 complete handswipes to score 2 backpoints which is what was recorded.
From my perspective, the second hand swipe was completed after the clock hit 0.0, so I think NCSU would have won that challenge but they had already used their one for the dual do the call stood.
He accidentally lifted red for 2 first, so he then fixed it to 2 green and then did his swipes. If they reviewed they would have counted from when Camacho was in danger, not when the ref started his swipes.
In essence the ref started his count for back points late so the final was legit.
You're correct I think he put that in effect when he rose the wrong arm
Yep he goes to raise his hand for the takedown with 2.2 seconds left put he messes up which hand so he probably had a one count going in his mind
Hadn't thought of that but I see it on the replay now. Glad the good guys benefited either way!
NC State deserves it either way for throwing a brick asking for locked hands
I honestly wish I understood more about the sport and how it's scored cuz that shit was LIT FAM!
Most exciting match collegiate wrestling match I have ever watched live. We rock! Go Hokies!
Time to drink (a few more)!!!!
Ummm...can someone explain to me what happen? I don't know the first thing about wrestling.
But fuck yeah, Go Hokies.
NC State was up by 3 team points, 16-13, going in to the final match of the dual. Latona won in the final seconds of the match 7-4 which is a regular decision worth 3 team points, creating a tie at 16. Virginia Tech and NC State tied on the first two tiebreakers. Virginia Tech won on the third tiebreaker, total match points scored, by one point 49-48 because Latona won by 3.
Latona scoring near fall points in the last 2 seconds of the match won the entire dual which snapped NC State's longest dual win streak in the country.
So latona needed a takedown to win the match (the announcer had the total points wrong it actually was 50-48 in favour of tech so latona only needed a takedown to win us the match cause it would have gone to the last tiebreaker. First takedown of the dual which was Tech) which latona got the 2 plus 2 for nearfall which is. If both of the opponents shoulders are 45 degrees to the mat while you're in control the ref will count etiher a 2 set of nearfall or a set of 4. In this case since there was only 2 seconds left in the match latona got 2 swipes
Actually ACCN gave Myers a invisible point in his match he won 13-5 instead of 14-5 like they showed so yeah that 2 NF was critical
Macho since we moved the party over here hit the people with another link to the SERTCπ

SmackedThePackFAM!
Due to the key play I've started following wrestling...I'm not gonna lie I still haven't learned all of the scoring and rules (but I'm getting there)....but my god I haven't been more pumped after a tech win since probably the unc tech overtime game. I'm going to keep watching and following these guys and learning on the fly because of this key play group. Hopefully more are out there like me but damn at the end of the match I wanted to do a keg stand and high five every bastard at the party! Turns out I was at my house with a confused wife and two small children...but believe me the spirit inside of me was there...let's go!!!!
Never too young to learn the art of a keg stand!
Wrestling fam and props to espn app for remote watching. What a nail biter.
Got to talk to wrestling team in airport last year; very impressive group of Hokies.
Go Hokies!
/starts learning everything he can about wrestling
Sweet! But I wonder about something.
1) So Tech was 8 and NCSU was 3.
2) We beat them head-to-head and now have a better record.
Curious to see if the people who rank the wrestling teams put us ahead of NCST or they do like the clowns ranking basketball did and keep UVa ahead of us. Not that it really matters as you just need to get into the tournament and win there, but it was still absurd. Just curious if the same will happen here. Guessing no, but ...
My prediction is etiher. 3#VT 4#NCSU or 3#NCSU 4#VT
Like many, I do not follow wresting or understand a lot of the rules and set up. But with Tech having been a really solid top 10 team for so long, would we be considered a "blue blood" in wresting? Know there are a few ultra elite teams like Alabama, Clemson and OSU in football that almost always win, but would you consider VT to be just a step below like maybe Oklahoma or Georgia in football? Maybe not as we have never been #1. Just wondering.
I consider being top 4 blue blood range in wrestling so in football terms they be playoff teams. 5-8 I consider being on the cusp of blue blood so basically a New Year six team
Thank you. Great analogy to explain it to a simpleton like me :-).
NPπ€
The blue bloods are really PSU, aOSU, Iowa and Ok State.
It's hard to be a blue blood with out a championship. Gonzaga isn't a blue blood basketball school and they've been great for 20 years.
Ohio state is a relatively new phenomenon and not really a blue blood. Oklahoma, Iowa State, and Minnesota are more successful programs.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I_Wrestling_Championships
Those three certainly aren't blue bloods right now either. I would put it as Penn State, Iowa, and Oklahoma State. Everyone else is just in the hunt.
A blue blood doesn't mean good right now
It's probably going to look something similar to this. My guess is 1) Iowa 2) Michigan 3) Okie State 4) Penn State 5) Mizzou/VT 6) whoever isn't 5 7) NC State
Wrestling rankings don't have the big moves like football. They consider how you might fare in a tournament as well as duels.
the team rankings seem to be aggregate ranks of the individuals at each weight class, and NCST has wrestlers ranked in the top 25 at their weight class in almost every class. The Hokies do as well, but not quite as many classes.
The impression I get is that the Hokies have more wrestlers capable of winning championships, but NCST has more wrestlers expected to score points in a tournament.
Virginia Tech is higher ranked as a tournament team because it has a few guys that are expected to go deep. It is worth significantly more points to get wins on the championship side of the bracket. That means that being ranked #20 isn't expected to earn many tournament points because they will face a highly ranked guy early. Intermat has team rankings for both tournament and duals.
VT is #6 in both Dual and Tournament ranks, NCST is #4 and #5 respectively
Our HWT staying in after dislocating his elbow (I think) in the first period and limiting his loss kept us in this match. That was scary hearing him yelling in pain for a minute.
Him and our unranked wrestlers did well to give us the chance to win. I see us doing better than NC State in the tournaments this year. As a team they are not great at scoring points from neutral. Maybe two of their wrestlers take any meaningful shots from neutral.
What a way to get the win. It's great how wrestling is climbing its way to to being a headlining sport at VT.
Like me and macho been saying. If y'all want this team to be at the top. consider donating to the SERTC
This so much as we need to keep growing and have as much support staff as possible. The staff has been really well put together after Dresser left I was afraid the success might follow him but Roby has done a fantastic job of bringing in big time world stage guys to SERTC and that influences many recruits as some are really wanting to get Olympic success in Freestyle and Frayer, Green, Waltz, and company bring that aspect to the program.
